Mail will not retrieve/import archived mbox files.  Thoughts?  Help?

I've done a clean install of my wife's iMac (PowerPC iMac G5, 1.6 GHz with 1GB ram) on OSX 10.5.8. Prior to the clean install, I archived her Mail as per Apple on an external LaCie drive.
Upon installing and reorienting everything, I booted up Mail, and attempted to import the archived mail or .mbox files. Each time Mail quit cold showing a window which offered to Relaunch, Ignore, or Report to Apple.
I followed a few of the Apple tips, such as launching Mail from the Applications folder, and cleaning up third party plug ins (none here this time), same thing happened. Just as a test, I tried to import the archived .mbox with Thunderbird, no dice.
In fact, even if I try to copy the /mbox or Inbox folder to the desktop, it just hangs, showing a small window "estimating time to copy". . . .
I am able to open the table of contents folder in TextEdit, and there shows 24.2MB of data when I "Get Info" on the .mbox icon.
Any thoughts? How can I open these files, extract tham and do it better next time? Could it be an issue of an older machine dealing with newer software and choking?
FYI, when I did this on my MacPro, everything went 100%.

After rebooting and trying Migration Assistant nothing is working.
When I try and import the mbox files that I exported before I reinstalled OS X, I locate the files and click ok. The "import" dialog tells me that no valid mbox files were found. Any ideas please?

The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

  • Mail will not finish importing

I have had a problem with my mail for a few days. When I import my emails I get some them but then the email will not finish importing and I get an error message. I know there are more emails to be imported because I also get my mail on my Blackberry. And when I get them thru my broadband home page it all comes thru there. My mail just sits there and spins forever and errors out. HELP PLEASE!

Not sure what you mean. You appear to be calling “importing” what is actually downloading or retrieving mail from the server. Importing usually refers to bringing into Mail mailboxes that were stored somewhere else, by means of File > Import Mailboxes.
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Also, what error message do you get? This is essential information that should always be provided. We aren’t in front of your computer to see what happens...
As a first step, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.

  • Mail.app fail to import a mbox file

    Hi,
I have a problem with the importation of a xxxx.mbox file, downloaded for archiving from a gmail account (before deleting it) and following the online instruction as explained there http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14911.
The mbox file seems coherent, as it weights 640,9 Mo for 4300 emails.
The infos about this file indicates that the type is "Microsoft Outlook mailbox", but neither data importations as a common mbox file nor a Apple mail mbox file succeed, as both had the result of an Importation file appearing in Mail with a file named after the mbox file in it, but no email at all.
Beside, Mail does succeed in importing .mbox exported from itself.
I must also mention that Mail frequently refuses to quit, and requires the use of Activity Monitor to be shuted down.
Thanks anyone very much in advance for any expertise,
    J.

    Thanks for the suggestion,
but looking at ~/Library/Mail/V2/mailboxes, the mailbox corresponding in the file /importation even shows no data files, just a info.splist.
It appears that Mail is not capable to import correctly the .mbox file of interest, as Mail not seems to work a lot importing it.
In conclusion, either the .mbox file is corrupted and if so, not exploitable (thanks gmail), or my Mail.app has a problem importing it. But in that last case, it is just strange that I don't get any error message.

  • Mail will not retrieve

After some 15 months of using mail without problems, now when I try to collect mail, my activity viewer indicates that mail is going through all the motions of picking up mail and indicates that there is no mail available. If I go into mail2web I can pick up mail without problems. I have changed none of my mailserver settings and discussed this problem with my server techies who say it is a mac problem. I have tried rebooting but it makes no difference. Can anyone help please

    You’re welcome.
I have no problem connecting to the internet via an external modem.
Glad to know. I didn’t say nor meant otherwise. Does the network interface used to connect to Internet appear at the top of the list in System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations or not?
the mails show in the gear action window as not downloaded but ready for download.
Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server. What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings for this account?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message not downloaded yet (i.e. the message that Mail appears to be choking on).
You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them — and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.
There is something, however, that you may want to try after removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded, but before removing messages that haven’t been downloaded yet.
For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the account folder to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting that file causes Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Occasionally MAIL will not retrieve my Gmail

If I do not get any mail for a day on my mac mini, I log into Gmail on their server. The mail is there. This happens maybe once every week or two. I am not changing any settings on either Gmail or my SnowLeopard mail. I tried clicking on "Get Mail" and I can't force it to retrieve the mail. I tried using mail connection doctor and it said "connection and login to server succeeded".

It is a POP account. Actually it is working now. All I changed was a setting in gmail that asked wither you wanted to keep the message on the gmail server after downloading or not. For some strange reason it did not want to delete the old messages from its server, strange.
    Thanks Bob

  • Mail will not import mbox files!

    Hi there,
I just reinstalled OS X Tiger to take care of a FCS issue. I'm working at bringing my computer back to where it was before and I backed up the mbox files for mail as well as the plist preferences file. Well, reinserting the plist preferences file was brilliant as my mail accounts are now all set up again, HOWEVER, Mail won't let me import the mbox files and considering that I need the stuff that's in them, I feel stuck, anyone have any solutions??

After rebooting and trying Migration Assistant nothing is working.

    Hi NeoCK,
According to your description, you can access your report successfully, but it fail to send e-mail subscription. Right?
In this scenario, since you can access the report successfully, so this user has permission on report server. Please go to E-mail setting in your Reporting Services Configuration Manager, check if the current user has permission on that SMTP server.
If this is still not working, please recreate the subscription and try again.

  • HT2500 Using Mail in System X 5.8 It will not accept attachments (photos, pdf files)

Using Mail in System X 5.8 It will not accept attachments (photos, pdf files) to send. It was working just fine and after some period of non-use it just stopped accepting attachments to send. The system is all up to date. And, I have the same problem on two different Imacs.

I had exactly the same problem as arthur1234. I followed his own suggested fix in his post of 10/12/2012 at 9:31 AM.
His fix worked perfectly. Attachments are now being sent and received as they have been for the last 10 years or so.

  • Trying to import older .mbox files into Apple mail

I have been trying to import older .mbox files back into Apple mail over an hour.
No matter what I use in the import window, nothing seems to work.
If it imports it sends it to the mail downloads folder but nothing from that point on.
I can read text in TextEdit but it's all running together.
    OS X v10.6.8 Snow Leopard

I noticed on the left side way down past my last mail box folder ( long list) for the import .mbox files.
    Seems they were hidden !

  • Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened

Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened... the blue dot will NOT go away, no matter how many times I open the e-mail.
It's a simple pop account. I AM able to mark messages read with the message menu item (mark as read.) I also have nothing synced with it, no iPhone, no IMAP accounts, no .mac account, nothing.
But this is a real pain to have to do manually, when it used to happen automatically upon clicking the e-mail, it opening in a window to read, and then closing it.
All was working fine up until the 10.5.7 update. I hoped the 10.5.8 update would fix the problem, but no change. Everything else is working perfectly (I do the permissions repair/disk verify procedure before and after each update.)
Can't seem to find anyone else with this problem in here either, through search or just going through hundreds of messages.

    Okay, then lets try this:
    1. Select all your messages in the Inbox; then use the contextual menu or the Message > Mark menu to mark them all as Read.
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
    4. Restart Mail, wait for the index to rebuild and retrieve any new email you might have, and see if the problem contineus. Hopefully it will not.

You may be able to download and install the update from here: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
If I upgrade to Yosemite will I be forced to go to the new Photos program
No. After upgrading (and of course make a back up first) you will need to update iPhoto to v9.6.1 (you won't be able to do this prior to upgrading). Here's how:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Photos is v1 of a new app, as yes it's not as mature as iPhoto. It uses a different technology for working with external editors. That requires Adobe to write an extension to let it hook into the new app. Not done yet, neither has anyone else.
Going forward: iPhoto will run on OS 10.10., but there is no guarantee for subsequent versions of the OS. You might want to factor that into your anger term thinking.
