Mail Window Position Resets on Launch (argh)

this has been happening for years for me and i've never been able to find an answer. i was hoping that upgrading to leopard would fix the issue, but it hasn't...
whenever i "quit" mail, i have to make sure the message viewer window is front & focused; otherwise, when the next time i launch mail, the window resets to its default location & configuration; then i have to go back and set all my viewing preferences again (ie: window position & column views mostly).
does that make sense?

Did a clean install. That showed it who was boss!!! lol

  • How can I make Mail window positions sticky?

One of the few good things about Windows is application windows always open in the same place every time. Why can't we have this with Apple Mail...it occurs with many other inherent Apple applications.
When I open a new message window in Apple Mail I don't want it to be in a different position every time I open it...I want it in the same spot each time (and want that position to be decided by me...I'm the one using the application). Forcing a window to open in the same position is basic programming, so this must be something intentionally done. Is there any way to fix it?

    Hi
Mail is a document-based application (that is developer speak - never mind) that automatically stores the size and position of windows (at least it should).
BUT it differentiates between the type of windows you are using - example:
    - Mine is configured to show no preview pane (just the sidebar with accounts and folders and the message list on the right)
    - When I compose a message it opens in the exact same location where I had the last message composed and send (that is it stores size and position of the composition window)
    - When I read a message it opens in the exact same location where I read the last message.
The two window positions can be different...
If this does not work for you then I suggest a look at the pref file for Apple Mail.
It lives in /User/[short user name]/Library/Preferences/ by the name com.apple.mail.plist.
You should only modify this file when Mail is NOT RUNNING. If I open several mail message windows and toss them around size and position get stored immediately in that file.
Unfortunately there is no way to store size and position in that file permanently - you could lock the file but this is not a good idea for Mail will complain about missing rights and stop working.
    Cheers,
    Walter

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Can I set the position of the new mail window?

Each time I compose a new message, the new message window seems to appear at a different place, usually obscuring the main window. I would like to have it always appear to the side of the main window. Can I set this, perhaps in the property list?

Perhaps something is corrupt that is causing bad behavior for some users and so my comments are unhelpful, but here's some more data to add to this discussion: My Mail.app behaves as George Coghill described above, subsequent message windows open where the previous window was open.
For example- Close all Mail.app windows so that only the main "Message Viewer" window is open (basically, don't have any emails that you're in the middle of drafting open).  Open a new message, adjust the position as you wish, then close it.  When you open another new message, does it have the same position as the one you just adjusted?  It should.
However, for me, sometimes it would be off by a few pixels as Thomas A Reed described above.  I realized that this was because I had another compose window open in the background.  So as you troubleshoot, make sure no other compose windows are open, to remove one complication and help isolate the issue.
Side note: in cases where the original window's height fully extended across the display, the new window would be shifted over to the right only, but not down at all as some apps do (like Mac Word, annoyingly).  Another note: if you maximize the original window, subsequent windows also open maximized and unshifted.
A corollary to the paragraph immediately above is that if you open say 3 new windows, the second one will be shifted and the third one will be even more shifted.  Let's say you send all 3, and now open a new window, it has the position of the 3rd window.  Annoying.  Yes, it would be nice if it always opened new windows in the exact same position, but Apple likely won't do this since people will get confused and think they lost the window if it doesn't do the shifting.  I guess the take-away is draft one message at a time or maximize your composition windows, otherwise it's going to move :/
A band-aid solution: When a window isn't positioned how you like it, a quick/simple way to reposition it is with apps like Moom (my favorite), Cinch, Divvy, SizeUp, etc.  While I'm at it I should mention RightZoom, which makes the green zoom button behave like the Windows maximize button, and Cordless Dog Stay, which is great if you connect/disconnect your laptop to a screen causing the window positions to always get disturbed between displays.

  • Mail Not Remembering Window Position of Previous Session (again)

Everytime I relaunch Mail, I have to rearrange the viewer windows to the way that is most efficient to use them. Is there a way for Mail to remember window positions, and sort preferences for each viewer window?

Interestingly, Mail does seem to remember the window positions, in its com.apple.Mail.plist, but it isn't applying the remembered positions. I tried a few times, and on at least one try it got the positions correct. Could it be that if you quit, restart then quit and restart again it will have them right on the second restart?

  • Mail Not Remembering Window Position of Previous Session

Mail has started forgetting how its main window was sized when previously using the application.
When I open Mail, the window dimensions are like those for a small screen - not as previously sized.
Is this a known problem (could not find with discussion search) and is there a fix? Thanks!

  • How Do I Reset The Finder Windows Positions?

    Hi,
I would like to "reset my finder windows positions". Anyone knows how I can do that?
    Thanks.
    Ed

So I cannot edit the .DS_Store file?
You can try, as I do not know how good you are at working with binary files.  When I try to edit a .DS_Store on my system I see:
    ^@^@^@^ABud1^@^@p^@^@^@^H^@^@^@p^@^@^@^P^L^@^@h^K^@^@
lots and lots of ^@ with occasional other characters mixed in.
So what will it happen if I delete the .DS_Store file? Will my iMac's all Finder Windows be reseted?
The Finder will forget information about that Folder.  Where it is positioned on the screen, how the files in the folder are arranged, etc...
If you are concerned, create an experimental folder, put some junk files in the folder (stuff you can delete later).  Arrange things in the experimental folder, play with the size of the experimental folder.
Now delete the .DS_Store for that file.  See what happens in a safe experimental way.  If you like the results, apply the same to folders you want to reset.
"for each Folder", what do you mean?
If you want to reset more than 1 folder, you would repeat the .DS_Store for each folder that you are interested in resetting.

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • Reset window positions

I suspect that my father's iPhoto "adjustments" window has been moved so far out from the screen, that he can't find it when he clicks on the "adjustments" button in edit mode. When he clicks on "Effects" the window pops up, but he can't see that anything happens when he clicks on "Adjustments".
Is there a way to reset the window positions in any way? Or to move a window without having to actually click and drag it?

    goka
Try reset the display resolution: System Preferences -> Displays. This will often recover a missing window.
Or try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

  • Main Mail window missing

I can not recall having done any upgrdes or installs at the time of this occurence. When launching mail the main mail window of the app. does not apear. It is listed in the menu's but will not show up when selected. I backed up my messages and deleted all the mail and still nothing. Next I reinstalled the Mail app. package, nothing. Finally I did an arcive and install of 10.4, nothing. I have the same accounts on my PBG4 and there is nothing wrong with it, there were 2000 emails in the combined 3 accounts and I have gottent that down to 400 but nothing has changed. Any thoughts or directions?

The position and size of the window is stored in the preferences file. If there is something wrong with the values stored there, that would explain the problem you’re experiencing. Proceed as follows:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    7. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Help! My ipad mail window wont stay open to read mail?

ipad has been sending & recieving mail with no problems but suddenly is recieving mail but when mail window keeps shutting down & won't stay open??? Any ideas???

    It won't be a virus
Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Delete button in main Mail window doesn't seem to work with update to 10.5.

Hi, I just upgraded to OSX 10.5.8 and now the delete button in the main mail window does not seem to be working. The other buttons work, and if you hit the delete key that works. The delete button at the top of a message window also seems to continue to work. This is strange behavior. I will try to reboot again to see if that helps.

I am seeing the same issue. Very annoying. Tried resetting the toolbar too - did not work. Any help Apple?

  • External displays - browser window position when disconnected display

I'm using a laptop, connecting one or two external displays, - one using the HDMI port, second using an USB "dock station" (Toshiba standalone). Second screen normally to the right, third screen (usb) above the laptop screen.
Often when I have disconnected the USB external display, my Firefox browser window are still "on the third display" - position as if this display was still active.
Even if I quit Firefox and restarts ( or even restarts windows ) the same position window is retained. The only way to fix it (when the USB connected display is not available), is to change the window position of the second (HDMI) display to cover the area of the USB one, then move Firefox window to my main laptop display, and then reposition the second screen back to the normal.
Normally, I expect applications to automatically reposition the windows to the available display(s) under the conditions that an extra display is removed. However, this seems not to happen with Firefox. It's inconvinient, but possible to fix with the second screen available, but I'm lost when I am not able to connect an external display ...
Is there any solution to this? Is it possible to change (reset) window positions directly in RegEdit ??

    Dear varkgirl:
Thank you very much for your help and valuable suggestion.
I've tried your suggestion but ran into some problems. The links I am trying to open in another window are actually PDF files that the viewer can download from my website.
Since I was having problems I decided to try something else. After publishing the website to my desktop I then opened the pages where the links are in Dreamweaver. The layout view is great and displayed the image just the way it appears on the browser's window. I first selected the "link button" to the file and then in the inspector windows (bottom of the page) I chose under target the "_blank" option. This tells the software that the linked page or file is to be opened in a new blank browser window. I then saved the page (re-saved it over the existing file) to incorporate the changes. After this I proceeded to navigate through the website and everything works great.
Thank you for your help and suggestions. I just thought I would post this here in case it may be of help to you as well as others.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain
