Mail windows cannot close

Hi,
Since a recent upgrade (Mail is now at Version 4.2 (1078)), I often get situations where I cannot close openned email windows. I tried the following without success:
* use the red "close" botton
* use the menu File-> close
* quit Mail (the openned window comes back when I launch)
* force quit (same)
The only way I tought of for killing these annoying email windows is to send it to myself... not very productive.
I got that on both my desktop and laptop after a recent upgrade.
Any one else got that?

I'm not quite sure I understand correctly -
when I start Mail, I have the main Mail "window" open; it shows the mailboxes in the left column, the list of email messages within the mailbox selected are in the top part of the window and, if I click on one, the message opens in the lower part of the window. That window will always be open while you have Mail open. I don't have a separate "email window" open unless I am typing a new message and that disappears as soon as I've sent the message. So I'm not sure why you would have several email windows open? Can you elaborate on exactly what they are or what might have caused it?
I never use the close (either button or File menu) because it seems somewhat pointless - I am either actively using Mail or I quit Mail when I'm done. Using Mac OS, you must use quit; using "close" will keep the application running (albeit in the background) until the Mac is shut down.
And, whatever window(s) were open when you quit (or closed) the application, the very same window(s) will open when you next start the application. That is a feature for your convenience, so you can get right back to where you left off. Try quitting (file - quit or command-q) Mail with only the main window open - you should get only that window when you next open it.

I cannot close my mail on mac air. There is a message appearing "the Message Design" How do I resolve the problem?.

FYI - clicking the red dot will not Quit an application that can have more than one window open. Mail is such an app. So are Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. The convention for quitting Macintosh Applications is either command-Q on the keyboard or, if you're a mouser - File->Quit. On the other hand System Preferences, Calculator, DiskUtility and Face time are examples of single window Apps where "closing the window" Quitis the program.
The confusion is more common among WinDUHows to Macintosh converts.

When I click on a link in an email all Mail windows close and the link opens in Safari. How do I make it not close the Mail windows?

    Hi,
Does it fix your problem when you log on to another computer? 2 Weeks ago I had exactly the same problem. Helpdesk said it had something to do with my profile. They asked me to first log off from the computer the error occurred, then they told me to log off from the computer which was working fine. Apparantly, the helpdesk did something to my profile next (reset or initialize?). When I logged on to the computer which was causing the problem, the problem was solved....
Sorry I cannot give you any concrete info on what the helpdesk did... But that's what did it for me...
Hope your problem is solved soon!

  • Mail window does not close anymore

When I press the red dot or type CMD-W, the mail window does not close anymore. It just stays open, everything else works as usual. Any ideas, how to close the window again?
    TIA

Look at the bottom frame of the Mail window; it may display a small dot thingie in the middle of its bar, something like this -
If so, try clicking on that dot and dragging upward.
If that works, you should have both panes present again. You can adjust the size of the window as a whole by dragging the bottom-right corner (where the hash marks are).

After opening my yahoo mail window, I keep getting a very short and narrow dialogue box with the words "log into Xmarks" I cannot ... when it pops up, always upper left of my laptop screen and I try to get into my yahoo mail web page, I get a DING sound and cannot enter it ... everything is frozen. I have to hit CNTRL + ALT + ESC to get rid of it - and then reload my Firefox browser to get back to my yahoo e-mail page ... fortunately for me, Firefox re-stores a previous session ... How can I get rid of this intrusive thing, and what is it? Thanks in advance ... Ted Beaudoin, Welland, ON, Canada

    Hey jeroenb16613921,
Please specify exactly when you get this white popup screen. While opening a PDF or launching Acrobat by double-clicking on the Acrobat icon.
If it comes when opening a PDF, then where is this PDF actually stored?
Let me know more on the same so that I can analyze the issue.

I downloaded the latest iTunes software update and it properly installed.  But,  I cannot close the update window showing it was completed and the blue completion bar is full but cannot cancel or close it either.  Any ideas on how to clear that out and close the window.  Tried to quit on both the big window and the software update title in the menu bar.  No luck.

Tried that by shutting down via the power button only as the normal shutdown was nixed by the open window issue.  It did not help.  Found a very similar question in the discussions and it recommended "Force Quit".  That worked and the update works normal and the window is gone.  Thanks!

    Quit Mail, Trash this file...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

mail opens in new window, must close window to get to next msg, unable to arrow down to next msg, help?

from my son, in mail version 4.5,
In the "classic layout", at the bottom of your email list, there should be a thin gray bar with a little gray dot in the center.  Hover over that spot until the cursor turns into the "bar arrow" and drag it upward.  You messages should appear below like the second screenshot.  Alternatively, if you are using the newer version of Mac Mail, you could change your Preferences> Viewing to the "new layout".

  • Mail will not stop loading, twirling rainbow icon will not stop, cannot close mail application then.

Just downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and on my Mac Book Pro (mid 2009).  When I select the mail application this problem occurs: the rainbow icon that twirls will not stop, and then I cannot close the mail program at all.  No clue what to do next, thanks for the help or ideas. Click on the apple in the top left corner of the computer. If it doesn't let you, open another application such as finder, and then click it, then go down the force quit, then click mail and then press force quit.

  • On a Mac, how do I close tabs or windows where dialogs have popped up trying to download malware and you cannot close them?

On a Mac, how do I close tabs or windows where dialogs have popped up trying to download malware and you cannot close them? I think it's Ctrl+F4 on a PC. I would like to close just these tabs or windows instead of having to quit the whole firefox program.

The equivalent of Control+F4 is Command+W, I have not tried it but you may still get the alert boxes when closing a tab using this method.
The AlertCheck add-on can be used to block the infinite loops such as this - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/alertcheck - This functionality is built into Firefox 4.
An alternative method in Firefox 3.6.* is to temporarily turn off JavaScript. Open the Firefox preferences window, go to the Content panel and de-select the setting "Enable JavaScript" then click OK. You will then be able to close the tab, and can then re-enable JavaScript.

  • Cannot resize new mail window in yosemite

Ever since I installed Yosemite, the new mail window pops up way too wide. I can make it shorter or taller but not narrower. Periodically, someone will post a fix and that generally works once or twice but then that does not work either. I have deleted large signatures, deleted multiple accounts, rebuilt mailboxes and restarted more times than I can name. This is truly irritating and needs to be fixed. I know I am not the only one with this problem because I have seen others post about it. I am working on a brand new macbook pro 13" with all the bells and whistles so it is not the hardware. Help please!

    Hi Adrian,
there is no need for cut and paste the signatures for every e-Mail. Just follow the described procedure. Remove your Signatures under Mail/Settings/Signatures. After this you will be able again to adjust your New Message or Reply-Window in width. After you have adjusted your New Message - Window, restart the Mail-App and write your Signatures back under Mail/Settings/Signatures. Now anything should work perfect. You can adjust any Windows in Mail, as it should be. If your Signature is to big, you can copy them into a file from the Textedit-App, change the Text over Format/Make Plain Text (with this step you remove hidden formats), then  change the text back over Format/Make Rich text and copy in the last step this Text back to your Signatures under Mail/Settings/Signatures. Close your settings, restart Mail. This procedure takes you only minutes. After this, it works for sure.
Sorry for my bad English, but I hope you will understand what I intend to tell you.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program and tried various other things based on the MANY other complaints with this same issue and nothing is working. How can this problem be corrected?

    Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
Are you upgrading from a previous version of Photoshop elements or is this your first?
Are you trying to load the organizer or the editor or do both fail?
