Mail wiped my mailbox

Hello you all,
What happened is that yesterday I deleted a rule from my Mail preferences (the rule being that all messages from **@phototakers.com should be colored in grey), when I closed the preferences Mail asked me if I wanted to apply the rule to all the emails, I clicked yes and then Mail started to delete all the emails from my .mac account... I try to check in the trash to see if they ended there but it was as empty as my inbox.
Is there a way I could get my mailbox account restored to what it was at the beggining of the week or something? Since it is IMAP, doesn't Apple have some backups or some kind of similar things?
I know I should backup things regularly, but yeah, how was I to know that deleting a rule would also delete all my emails?
I really hope something can be done as this is quite important for me (receipts from products etc and also sentimental value).
Thank you all,
Cheers.
Scott.

Hello Scott.
when I closed the preferences Mail asked me if
I wanted to apply the rule to all the emails
That's not what Mail asked. Actually, there is no way that rule would be applied to any messages after having been deleted. What Mail asked is this:
Apply rules
Do you want to apply your rules to messages in open mailboxes?
I clicked yes and then Mail started to delete
all the emails from my .mac account
What probably happened is that Mail applied the other rules to those messages. Whatever happened to them is what your rules say should happen to them. Maybe your mail wasn't deleted, but just routed to other mailboxes?
I know I should backup things regularly
You certainly should, but a backup would only allow you to restore data stored locally on your disk, not anything stored on the server. That said, it probably would have made it possible to recover your messages from the cached copies Mail keeps locally.
how was I to know that deleting a rule
would also delete all my emails?
It didn't. The other rules did (if that's what they did), and only because you told Mail to apply them to those messages.

    When I try to open my mail (not IMail) a new message screen comes up on my iPad  (version 8.1.3 (12B466), and I cannot cancel it; it prevents me from getting to the mail in that mailbox.

    Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

    Hello,
    Trying to set up my work-mailboxes in the Mail-app. I have my personal email ([email protected]) but also several other mails (for example: [email protected] och [email protected]) that is used by more people than me. Permissions to these are controlled via the AD-account (AD\myname).
    I manage to set up my personal mail ([email protected]) without any problems, but when it comes to adding the other mailboxes, mail just won't do it.
    I get an error message "An error accoured trying to set up the Mail-account. An unknown error occurred"
    Does anyone have any idéas on how to set up Mail with several mailboxes controlled by the same AD-accound?

    I tried to add a new POP account c@mydomain and got a failed message

    Please, post the exact error message you get when trying to do that. To get the error message in English, go to System Preferences > International, move English to the top of the list and restart Mail.

    Use Mail Scripts. Its Add Addresses function will collect all the addresses from all selected messages and allow you to select the ones you want to add and allow you to create groups as you go.

    I converted my mail boxes from POP to imap for the purpose of syncing all my devices. I backed up my mail boxes and further more perfomed a timemachine backup.
    Upon restoring ther mailboxes, either by manually copying them to the mailboxes folder, and restoring a timemachine backup, both pocesses result in the above problem.
    Please recomend a solution.

  • Mail present in Mailbox, not showing in Smart Mailbox

    OK, this is a bit complicated to explain, but let's try.
    To archive old emails, I use to create a Smart Mailbox with criteria, for example, all emails (received or sent) from 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2001.
    Then I drag them in a separate mailbox, which I can archive.
    As a check, I show on the mail browser the "mailbox" column.
    And many mails are reported as "blank" in the Mailbox column.
    Worse, when I try to open them, they appear blank, too. No headers, no contents.
    But if I do a Spotlight search on the title shown in the browser, I can find the .emlx file, and open it with Text Wrangler. Text Wrangler then give me the path of the file ... which is in the adequate mailbox !! And if I open the file through the result window of Spotlight, Mail decently opens the message ...
    Rebuilding the mailboxes doesn't help.
    It happens with "small" years (+/- 2000 messages) as well as with "big" years (10,000 messages and above).
    Is there a way to rebuild a complete index of Mail ?
    Thanks in advance

    Claude,
    It would appear that you do need to force reindexing. Since forcing reindexing involves more than those On My Mac mailboxes, the issue of what type of accounts you use remains relevant?
    To force Mail to reindex, you quit Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library/Mail and locate the Envelope Index file (hopefully you only find one file with similar name). Drag out, or delete the Envelope Index file from the Mail folder, and then relaunch Mail, which will announce that it is ready to import mailboxes, but really will only set about to index all mailboxes.
    Again, if you have anything other than POP accounts, please report that, and if you understand what you are supposed to do with the account folder for non-POP accounts?

  • Why there are duplicate mail accounts in Mailbox?

    Somehow the mail accounts in Mailbox of my iPhone 5 have been duplicated, so whenever there is a new E-mail, the unread E-mail number is doubled. This is what shows in the Mailbox.
    As shown above, the Yahoo! mail and Gmail are duplicated, and I could not remove them with Edit. Anyone knows why this happens, and how I should remove the dplicate mail accounts here?

    I have the same problem with my iPhone 4.  The duplicate also appears on my MacBookPro.  Have not found the solution yet.

  • How do I force smart mailbox to only show me mail from one mailbox while also showing multiple senders?

    How do I force smart mailbox to only show me mail from one mailbox while also showing multiple senders?

    It would help to post what you've tried. It does, indeed, appear that -h is the switch, and the man includes several examples, so if you've followed the examples and it's not working then that hints that you should pass it back to Apple.
    You also don't say how you're implementing your change. Are you invoking slapd manually, or are you editing /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist ?
    You should be doing the latter, and I'd expect to see something like this:
    <array>
      <string>/usr/libexec/slapd</string>
      <string>-d</string>
      <string>0</string>
      <string>-h</string>
      <string>ldap://x.x.x.20/ ldap://127.0.0.1/ ldapi://%2Fvar%2Frun%2Fldapi</string>
    </array>
    (note the inclusion of ldap://127.0.0.1/ as an entry - you'll need to run on localhost as well the .20 address since all the local services will look to localhost)
    You might also need an ldaps URL if you're using SSL but let's walk before we try to run

  • All e-mails in my mailboxes have been deleted.  All the mailboxes are still there but the content in them...GONE.  I tried the time machine

    All e-mails in my mailboxes have disappeared.  The mailboxes are still there, but no content.  I think my behaviors were set to delete them after a month (i since tuned it off).  I tried to go to time machine and it has never been "on".  Can someone please help me retrieve ALL my e-mails that were in my mailboxes? Thank yoU!

    It depends on your Mail Preferences Accounts Mailbox Behaviour settings.  If your settings for the Comcast mail account are somethikng like this you would find them in your Mail Trash folder and then you would simply move them back to the correct folders.  If you had not activated the Trash option for deleted messages and they are also no longer on the Comcast server, then they are probably erased from your system.  Using the Trash option gives you some breathing room in case you accidentally or mistakenly delete messages.
    Look in your Mail folder in a Finder window.  Click on Home, open the Library folder and then open the Mail folder.  Would be nice if there’s something there to recover but I don’t think so.

    My iPhone 4S shows I have over 6 GB of memory used for mail yet the mailboxes are more or less empty.  Where is the memory going and how can I reduce it?

    I found a post with this solution that worked for me - .Do a backup, then download ibackupbot. It lets you look into the contents of that backup. Look in system files>mediadomain>library>sms>attachments. I found a ton of huge files related to long deleted texts. ibackupbot let me delete all that old crap. I then restored the phone with that now modifec backup and Bingo! freed up 9 GB. No problems.
    But note, if you are not technically inclined you probaly don't want to be digging around and deleting back up files. You delete the wrong thing and you could jack up your phone badly. Be careful.

    Interesting db mail issue. If i click send test mail from sql mgmt studio, it works fine, but when i execute a SP to send a mail, it fails. One thing I noticed is that the "LastModified" column in the mail log shows the domain account when a test
    mail was sent from mgmt studio, but show "sa" when the SP was used to send mail.
    This is from SQL 2012, did not see this in sql 2008, looks like 2008 always used the service account.  any ideas ?
    Get this error:

    Thanks.
    Ranga

    Hi Ranga,
    I also use SQL Server 2012. I send a test email through SQL Server Management and the last modified By “sa”.
    If you used stored procedure to send a test email. Please use the command below:
    EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail
    @profile_name = 'Adventure Works Administrator',
    @recipients = '[email protected]',
    @body = 'The stored procedure finished successfully.',
    @subject = 'Automated Success Message' ;
    I can both send test email through SQL Server Management Studio and SP. Make sure you have the right profile. Since you could send test mail via SQL Server Management Studio, please try again to send it via SP.
    Thanks.

    Was able to successfully solve the export problem by below command by adding the contentfilter parameter all -like this gave me all mails sent to this user and received to this user perfectly.
    New-MailboxExportRequest -Mailbox "journalmailbox" -ContentFilter {all -like '[email protected]'} -FilePath "\\server\mailbox.pst"

  • Duplicate Mail in 2 mailboxes.

    Setting up my new Macbook Pro. I have a Gmail account and set up an IMAP mailbox to accept mail. But I get the same mail in my Inbox in Mail. So I get the same mail in 2 mailboxes. I tried to delete the Gmail mailbox but it would not let me. Is the problem IMAP? I thought on my old MacBook, Gmail was a POP account. Any ideas?

    Maybe you have both POP and IMAP enabled at once. Log into your Google Mail account, Settings, then cast a cold eye on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
