Mail won't attach files

Since installing Mountain Lion (10.8), I am unable to attach files in Mac Mail by clicking on the attach paperclip icon or by selecting File - "Attach to email"  or File - Share - "as email"; when in the document. If I drag and drop the file into the e-mail, it works. Anyone have a fix?

I just started having this same problem this morning after upgrading, however, I was able to find a temporary solution.
- Open up a new message.
- Click the "clip" as you would attaching a file.
(Of course, you won't see the file being attached as this is the problem in the first place)
- Command-Q to force quit Mail
- Re-open the Mail
- You should be able to see the file you attached to the New Email you have created.
Although this does not provide a permanent fix to this issue, at least you can continue and finish whatever you are doing for now.

  • Mail doesn't attach files through dragging and dropping the files!

    Help please,
Mail doesn't attach files through dragging and dropping the files on OS X ML, it crashes for a while !!

Open Disk Utility and Repair disk permissions on the First Aid tab.
Then, Restart and boot into Recovery Mode by holding down cmd-r on restart until you see a gray screen. When the Mac boots, you will be presented with some options. Choose Disk Utility and select your Hard drive volume (Macintosh HD is the default name). Then, on the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk (not permissions).
If that doesn't help, you could try installing the 10.8.2 combo updater from the Apple Downloads site:

  • OS X Mail fails to attach files

    HI,
I am experiencing a recent problem in my Mail app on my 2 month old MBP. When I attach files in the mail using the attach button, the file does not get attached; only the title bar blinks. When I try to drag and drop file(s) into the email, Mail attaches empty files with the correct file names. I am using IMAP email.
I have already tried the following:
    1. Repair permissions from Disk Utility.
    2. Disconnecting the Mail, and rebuilding it.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail freezes when attaching file

I suddenly can't attach files to mail that I'm sending. The mail program freezes and I have to force quit (it says "mail not responding" in force quit box). I can still send mail if there are no attachments. Anyone know what to do?

    Hi Lessa,
Could be many things, we should start with this for safety...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
If you still have the same problem...
    Quit Mail.
Then in your Home folder. open Library folder, open Caches folder in that, look for the Mail, and drag it to the Desktop.Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Move this folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail

  • I updated to pages 5.0.1 and now Mail won't attach pages files

How do I attach and send pages file via mail?

    I don't think it's that straightforward...
Pages now stores a document in a package (a folder that looks like a file). Mail clients will either allow you to attach the package, but read it as a folder and send the individual files within the package to the email server, breaking the structure, or they will attach only the folder itself (no contents).
For browser-based email clients, like gmail, they don't normally have permission to read the contents of a folder you select so can't upload them. So, they upload just an empty folder. This will affect browser-based mail services generally including Yahoo, etc.
So, in terms of a fix, this will need either security changes in browsers per se, OS X to convert the package to a file on the fly when it is read by certain apps, the format changed back to a single file or some such other approach.

  • Mail freezes while attaching file in Maverick

Problem: When I attempt to attach a file in Mail it freezes and is not reponsive. It requires me to force quit the program.
Background: I just upgraded to OS X Maverick yesterday (10-24). Prior to this upgrade I did not have this problem. Mail ran great! The specific file I was attempting to attach was a 3.5MB video (Apple Quicktime MP4) file. I also attempted to attached a 3k txt file and it also froze the program. This happens each and every time I try no matter which e-mail account I am on.
    Specs: Mac Pro Workstation, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Can anyone suggest a fix? Thank you.

jde, I found some advice on other threads.  I am posting this here in case it can help you or anyone else.
I disabled (unclicked) saving mail to the servers in the Mail Account preferences for all of my different accounts. I went into internet preferences (in system preferences) and made sure all account were enabled (you may have to approve the passwords being sent despite the security warning... the window said I would have to re-enter the passwords, but I did not have to do so). And then in Terminal I typed the following:
    defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList
In my case it said not found, but I deleted the "ColorQuoterColorList" part and it seemed to work. I hope this helps. Mail seems to be working for now, and even seems a bit snappier.
Regarding Safari, I found advice to go through and clear out various PlugIns from the User Library Internet PlugIns folder and the System Library Plugins folder. I cleared out the old plugins that seem barely to be used, and updated some of the others, and this has seemed to help. Safari is now responsive. I saved all Plugins to folders on my desktop just to be sure I was not dumping something I might want to use. (I assume you know how to get into your user Library... hold down the option key while you click on the "Go" menu in the finder to see it).

  • Mac Mail Freezes when attaching files

Ever since my upgrade to snow leopard, my mac mail does 2 things. 1, it keeps asking for my name and password, and I have already cleared out my keychain, re input all my information, and it keeps doing that. does it about once a day.
but my more detrimental problem is that my mail will freeze the entire freaking system if I try to attach a file! Used to, I didn't have this issue, and it's only doing it on my imac. I have snow leopard on my macbook and it works just fine when I attach a file. On top of that, it's doing it when I attach a mp3.
I am not sure what to try here. But it doesn't just freeze up mail, but the entire mac. I mean, I can't even do a Command Option Esc to close mail, because it locks up the entire freaking system. I don't know what to try here.

I would start by setting up another user account, set up mail.app with your info on that account and see what happens there. If everything works fine there, I would (in the normal account) export all messages etc in mail.app (and make sure you have backup), delete (or rather rename) all mail prefs etc and set the mail.app up again and then (when everything hopefully works) import all old messages.
Btw, I assume that you have repaired permissions on the disk and that "cleared out the keychain" also included doing a first aid repair for the keychain.

  • Mail leaves outgoing attachment files in use

I've found that if I send a file as an attachment in an email, I can't delete that file until I quit Mail. It looks like Mail just forgets to close the file handle when it's done sending it.
Has anyone else noticed this? Can it please be fixed in a future Mail release?

  • Apple Mail Crashes when attaching file

    Hi,
I have a strange issue with one of our new Macbook Air machines.
We're running 10.6.7 and we've got an imap email account congifured.
What we are find is that when we arre trying to attach a file (going the normal way via the paperclip icon) when we nagigate to our afp server via the finder, whilst navigating through our folder structure mail deicdes to spinning wheel on us and doesn't recover.
I have repaired permissions and changed the setting within mail to no longer store drafts on the server. Just incase there was an issue with the draft.
Has anyone had this issue or know how to get around it?
    Thanks all

figured out my issue finally....and it was also the reason that my computer was running hot....i didnt have a certain folder permissions set to me with read and write....which ultimately messed with my keychain....this is a 2 min fix....  check out on this thread the post by james hunkins....

  • Trouble attaching files to e-mail

This just started happening and I'm not sure what I installed or did to cause it. In any browser - Safari, Firefox, Explorer - I can't attach a document. I'm using SBC Yahoo and their tech support said it was a problem with my computer.
When I choose a file to attach, it shows up, but when I click "attach", the browser tells me there was an error, no files are attached. I turned off my firewall but can't think of any other reason my files won't attach. I have no problems attaching files to my AOL mail but I don't always use AOL and sometimes need to use my SBC address.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm having the same problem with my verizon business webmail...Safari won't attach files...The old version of Firefox worked fine (Firefox 1.5 doesn't work at all, so now I'm without the ability to attach files altogether)...Need to find the fix for Safari...
