Mail won't connect to gmail... asking for password.

Hello all
I bought a Mac for my Dad (retired) and I no Mac experience (both new to Mac). I thought would be a good platform to start him on. So I set up the mail with him using Gmail. It work fine for a few days, then he allows some else to the Mac but he deleted the Gmail PW from the mail preferences so they cant read his email.
We re-enter the PW in the mail preferences and tried to get his mail. Now constantly looks the PW and does not connect gmail. I gone into gmail using safari and checked if the PW is good.. it is. Delete his acc in mail and did an automatic create acc for mail. It goes though all the steps, but when you do a "get mail" it ask for the PW (I enter the PW) and doesn't connect..It requests the PW word again. I double check all the sever setting etc.. still no joy...
Please Help ..I don't want him to lost faith with Mac... Thanks in advance

Make sure that the other information for Mail Preferences account data is correct (incoming and outgoing servers) and make sure that the password is not case sensitive.
Just out of curiosity how did your father delete his password. If he deleted or changed his password at gmail then re-entering the password on Mail preferences won't solve the situation because it is Gmail that is not allowing him access not the Mac. I'd try accessing Gmail from another computer and if he can't access it then it is obviously a problem with Gmail not his computer.

  • Apple Mail won't connect to Gmail

My Apple Mail 4.5 has been working fine up until a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know what happened, but now it won't connect to Gmail.  It says something like port 993 time out?  I've been searching online to find solutions, but none of them seems to work.  I can still log in thru webmail and I've already checked to see if my POP and IMAP are enabled in Gmail settings.  Please help Apple Geniuses.  Thanks.

  • Apple mail won't connect to Gmail server!

I am not sure exactly what has happened.  I have a year old MPB that is the glitchiest apple product I've had.  Mail slowly stopped connecting to the Gmail server and says my passwords are incorrect.  I have checked, rechecked, and even changed my passwords to ensure that the PW is not incorrect.  I have three gmail accounts and some of them worked up until today.  I cannot tell if this is a mac software issue or a gmail server issue.  I've been having some odd issues with my MBP so I would count that out as the culprit.  I double checked the files in Library/Preferences against an older backed up version and they seem to be intact.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mine stopped wotking on the 9th, under the mail app on the left hand side, if you have triangles with ! marks in them, perform a left click and start "Mail Connection Doctor" This may help pinpoing the issue.
Mine is failing at trying to connect on port 143.
This worked for me, go the accounts settings window and in each gmail account enter the following info
    Advanced Tab
    IMAP Path Prefix enter [Gmail]
If you then tick "Use SSL" this should make the port 993
Authentication shold be set to "password"
Then save these settings, finally email is received, hope this helps.
Let is know how you get on.

  • Email won't receive and keeps asking for password

Ever since a combination of circumstances last week, my email is mostly, randomly not sending or receiving on my MBP.  We changed to AT&T Uverse; and I ran the most recent update of Safari.  Now, despite having the correct password entered, my email program asks for my passwork over and over again and won't deliver my mail, although, for no particular reason, it does decide to work occasionally.  Is there some sort of known software compatibility issue?  That's what it feels like.  My thumbnails are also not always loading - again very random - I get the blue square with the question mark rather than the graphic.  TIming of this beginning is the same.

    Hi,
Can you confirm that you have an Officejet 8500a or Officejet 8500? On the 8500a model, you can set the networks proxy address and port setting from the front panel of the printer (setup>Webservices setup>proxy). If you are unsure what your proxy settings are you'll need to contact your network admin. If your network uses a proxy users name and password for all devices, you need to enter this information along with the proxy address and port in the printers embedded web server. Type the products IP address into an internet brownser window (printer must be connected to the same network as PC). Select the network tab, and than look for the proxy settings option. Enter in the information and click apply. Once the networks proxy information has been correctly inputed into the embedded web server, try printing again. If unsuccessfully, you might try reinstalling the printer software after uninstalling it. Hope this helps!

Trying to connect new wireless printer and it's asking for my password for my time capsule.  I don't remember that I had entered one initially, but maybe I did and just forgot.  Any way to retrieve a password for time capsule?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click on Edit in the small window
Click the Base Station menu at the uppermost top of the computer screen up where the Help, File, Window, etc menus appear
    Click Show Passwords

When you connect to the Guest network, you wouldn’t be asked for a password. The guest password would only be prompted once you open your internet browser.

  • Mail  on the Mac  -   does not ask for password

I realize this isn't exactly a Safari topic, but I don't see a category devoted to Mail problems.
I've just recently got a new cable provider and Mail is set up through them and it can send and receive mail ok.
My problem is that I would like to set a password so that only I can see my email. I have a user name and password but Mail never asks for my password when I click to open the Mail application.
What am I doing wrong ? Thanks for your help and if this question should have been placed under another category please let me know.

    Aloha!
Try this... From the Menu Bar in Mac Mail, click Mail/Preferences. Select the Accounts tab. Click the Account Information tab.
You will See: Incoming Mail Server/UserName/ and Password. If your password is stored there, just delete it. Close the Preferences window and click Save when asked to save changes.
Quit the Mail application, then re-launch it. Click the Get Mail tab top left side of the window. You should be prompted for your password ... type it in but if you are prompted to Save it in your Keychain, click No.
    Will that do the job?

  • Mail won't connect to iCloud, goes offline

Mail has been problematic. Once a day it will not download emails from the servers, and all accounts will go offline. A restart of Mail solves this, but why does it happen? Aslo, Mail won't connect with iCloud, with the password not being accepted both in Mail and in the System Preferences. However, the password does work with accessing iCloud via browser. How would I fix this?

Apparently NO ONE knows how to fix this problem.  I've scoured the posts on the Apple discussions and a lot of people have this problem, but no one can solve it.  And ANY suggestions are always the ones that we all know how to try anyway.  Never anything new.  No one can solve the problem and obviously Apple doesn't give a rat! They never help either.  I see a LOT of posts with a QUESTION, and no one answers them.

  • Not able to open mail from my mac, gmail repeatedly asking for password. but using same password able to open gmail on safari

not able to open mail from my mac, gmail repeatedly asking for password. but using same password able to open gmail on safari

okay well they got me to take out some .plist files to see if that would help it didn't. I'm not sure what ones that they deleted for my self maybe someone here would be abel to tell you what ones to take out but didn't work the one that came close to working was this going into keychain and deleting the account(s) then reading them again.
if you are to do this please back up first with Time Machine. You can do this with a usb drive.
Okay so go back to where you had internet accounts and make sure mail is shut. click the - on the account your having problems with then quit system preferences.
Okay so then press cmd and space bar at the same time then type 'keychain access' into the search then click on 'keychain access'
once it is open go to the top of the window and put your email address that you are having problems with.
once you have put in your full email, have a look at what comes up i deleted things in the kind colome with 'internet password' and anything with under name that had smtp.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com so it would look like this, map.gmail.com - internet password.
right click and delete them. make sure not to touch any other files that dont say them things on them.
Once you have done this quit keychain access and then restart the computer, once the computer is restarted go back to system preferences and internet accounts and re-add the account.
Hope this helps. if something is not clear just ask.

  • HT6114 my hot mail account will not let me access it keeps asking for password but won't authorise it?

my hotmail account will not open. keeps asking for password but will not accept the password when i enter it. its the correct passwrd?

    Hello Duncan,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Mail on your Mac.  I recommend the following steps for the issue you described:
If you entered the correct password in the password dialog in Mail, but continue to be asked for your password, try these solutions.
Open Keychain Access, then locate and delete the mail account password item.
Open Disk Utility, select the volume (for your hard disk or disks) in the list, click First Aid, then Verify Disk. After you’ve verified (and repaired, if necessary) the disk, try sending yourself a message.
