Mail Won't Display Messages

Recently, starting May 18th, my mail shows it is receiving messages, but they won't display.  I can see them coming into the server, but nothing displays.  For example, when I send a test email from my Gmail account to my hosted email account, I can see the message coming in under the "Mail Activity" screen (lower left), but then nothing comes up.
I'm hosting my websites and using my iMac as a mail server.
I've been working on this for days, and nothing has worked.  Just to recap:
I've "Rebuilt" every email box multiple times
I've deleted the "Envelope Index" file, and allowed mail to re-import everything
I've deleted all the security certificates from the system, except for the website security certificates, and issued new certificates
I've tried using Firefox Thunderbird for an email client, and I get the same problem
I've deleted all unnecessary emails
I can send email from outside accounts to my server, and it works just fine.  No errors, and I can see the message coming in just seconds later.
All email accounts connect and the "Connection Doctor" gives me green lights on everything.
This was a very sudden problem, and I did have 2 updates recently.  One for iTunes and one for the Thunderbolt controller.  Neither of which should have given me any mail issues.
So what would cause the messages to remain hidden?

The bottom line is, if your server is not properly setup for mail, it just won't work.  Obvious really, but the not so obvious is Apple syntax required for a proper server configuration.  Such as using "www.yourserver.com" as your FQDN.  Of course, this has never been an FQDN, "www" is a Microsoft sub-domain.
Hopefully, Apple will fix this in the future so it's not contrary to Internet industry standards.  Currently, this is very confusing and difficult to establish standards because the Apple environment doesn't see Internet domains the way they're established in the industry.

  • Mail won't display messages or close?

I bought this Macbook today (literally about 5 or six hours ago), brought it home, and used the migration assistant to bring my documents/preferences over to my new macbook from my old iBook G4, which was still running Tiger. Everything seems to be running alright, except that Mail is acting funny. I click on it and it opens, but the message viewer doesn't pop up. It doesn't come up until I go to Window > Message Viewer, and then it comes up as an empty inbox. I click the button to get mail and nothing happens. I checked the preferences and all my email account stuff is in there and correct. To top it off, when I try to quit, it refuses to - it just stays there until I force-quit it. I'm not really sure what to do and I didn't see any posts on Mail having this problem. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

This post under Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard > Mail and Address Book
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1830441&tstart=25
eventually handled my same situation. Mine was a new MB Pro which would not display the mail after a migration from an older iBook.
The entry further down in the post from the original writer is what did the trick for me.
    Good Luck

  • Apple Mail won't display messages in HTML

I'm using Apple Mail on my laptop to check email from an account other than iCloud and Gmail.  I also use my iPhone and iPad to check mail from this same account.  Sometimes, newsletters are appearing in Apple Mail in plain text format, and not in HTML format.  What's unusual is that these same messages appear in HTML format on both my iPhone and iPad, so I'm guessing it's not a problem with my mail server, but with the Apple Mail application.  Are there any settings in Apple Mail to ensure I view all messages in HTML format?
    Thanks!

    Emily -
My wife is having the same problem with her new MacBook Air. She never saw the problem on the old first-gen Air running Snow Leopard.
    Here's what's going on:
The messages that are having the problem are encoded as multipart/alternative. That is, they contain this in the received message:
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
              boundary="----=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993"
Downstream, you'll find that boundary string whenever a new "part" begins:
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
This begins the first part...the plain text part. On down the stream, you'll find the part header again:
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.=
    w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html>
That final <html> tag begins the bulk of the HTML code to render the graphical page. The block must end with a </html> tag to indicate the end of the block...but in this message the last line is:
    <td style=3D"color: #000000; text-decoration: none; font-size: 10px; font-f=
    amily: Arial,Helve
...and that's it. Obviously, the last word should have been "Helvetica" but ***the message was cut off***. I know this because if I open the message source window for the the same message in the gmail section (not the inbox section) the end of the message looks like this:
    </body>
    </html>
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993--
...which is what I'd expect in a multipart MIME encoded message.
The amount of data that's missing from the end appears to be about one network packet's worth. I suspect what's going on is that mail is erroneously discarding the final packet of some mail messages.
BTW, I've taken the computer to the Genius bar, and we took the time to create a new user account and a clean mailbox and duplicated the problem there in the store. The genius was unable to recommend a solution to the problem, and suggested that I perform a reinstall-in-place of the OS. Haven't done that yet, as I consider that pretty thin gruel from the perspective of fixing the problem.
In the meantime, I'm trying Sparrow mail as an alternative mail client. So far, I haven't seen the problem using Sparrow (nor, for that matter, on OSX Snow Leopard.)
Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'll post back in this forum if I come up with a solution. I'll follow the thread...if anybody has any ideas what might be going on please post.

  • Mac Mail won't send messages through some accounts

For many weeks I've had to use gmail because Mac mail won't let me go through either my business server or my personal website. I can send if I just use the browser so I know they are working. I've tried various addresses for my out going mail- nothing. I've gone into preferences and disabled those accounts, quit mail, then reenabled them again- still nothing.
My secretary is having the same problem on her Mac mini. Any suggestions?

I've encountered this issue too and I believe it may be an ISP issue. When I set up a new internet provider at my home I was at first unable to send business mail from home. Eventually I solved the problem by calling the ISP and they either made an adjustment or had me change some obscure setting on my computer or modem (it's been so long I can't remember exactly what it was). I still sometimes run into this problem when I take my laptop elsewhere. One way to check and see if this is the issue for you (if you have a laptop) is to take your computer to a coffee shop or some other place with wifi and see if you can send out mail using your business address from there. You also might want to check and see whether you are able to send mail to other addresses within your organization, or whether the inability to send email is across the board. I mention that because I seem to remember that I ran into an issue of some servers being unwilling to forward email that comes from outside to another address that is outside. So if you try to send an email from home, using your business address, to an address outside of your business, it may reject it, while accepting an address within the business.
Hope this helps and please bear in mind that I'm no expert at all.

  • Mail won't retrieve messages from ISP

Please tell me this is my ISP's problem, not my iMac's! I have 2 email accounts, one with my ISP and another with a spam-filtering service. As of yesterday, Mail no longer retrieves messages sent to my ISP email address, although it does retrieve from the other account. I know I have messages, because I can log in to webmail and read them there--but what a pain. My ISP, a small local outfit, seems overwhelmed, and I can't get through to support--so I'm guessing this is their problem.
If not, any suggestions! Many thanks!

Anything in the Deleted Messages box?
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

  • Mail won't retrieve messages any more.

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X Panther. My Mail application no longer retrieves my mail messages. I am having to run my web mail account, which is getting the messages but is obviously more of a pain to use. I can see one message in my status bar and activity report, and it also says that I have another "92 Messages" or whatever is coming, depending on how many I've opened and read in webmail.
The "receive" function seems stuck on the first message, then seems to time out, give up, and give me the "no mail" alert sound. Any suggestions?

Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server. Assuming this is a POP account, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message(s) not downloaded yet (i.e. the message(s) that Mail appears to be choking on).
You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them — and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.

  • Mail won't display HTML mails

I am having the problem that mail does not display HTML mails properly but shows them als plain text. Well, at least kind of. I went through all settings in Mail and Safari and whatever I might think of but no success.
Not even HTML mails from Apple are displayed correctly.
    Any idea what could wrong?

I find this kind of funny because I just turned off all HTML in Mail on purpose with a Terminal command.
Has anyone else been messing with your computer?
I don't have the Terminal commands to redo HTML here at the office , will have to wait until I get home, but if you trash the preferences for Mail that should fix it.
Quit Mail then go to user/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.mail.plist
Then restart Mail and see what happens.
There is another one with the same name in /Library/Preferences that you can trash as well if that doesn't work but it's most likely your user preference. If no one was messing with your computer probably just a corrupt preference because there is no way to turn HTML off in Mail other than through a Terminal command line that changes your user preference file. You can't have done it by accident.

  • Mail won't display the message content

I'm using Mail 3.0 in Leopard and using it to check three mail accounts: .Mac, Comcast, and GMail. My installation of Leopard is an upgrade from OS X 10.4.10. Everything has been working brilliantly until yesterday. Mail now shows there are new emails and displays the list of all messages but clicking on a message to read it's contents displays nothing. The preview window is blank. Double clicking the message shows a blank windows.
Between yesterday and today I did nothing that should have altered Mail's settings. Has this happened to anyone? Any ideas of what to do to resolve the problem? Could SpamSieve or GrowlMail be the culprit in this (even though they've been there since day one)?

Same problem here. Some (few) email bodies are not shown. When I hit reply, body is empty too.

  • Mail won't display pictures in HTML formatted received messages iMAC newbie

I am a new iMAC user and have set up my POP account and send/receive e-mail fine. However several received messages come with text only displayed and the graphical part is missing. The messages come with a file attachment "winmail.dat," which I cannot open.
My mail settings are pretty much out of the box default. I do have the preferences to show HTML selected. TIA for any help.

First, Google makes all computing simple.
Winmail.dat files are created by MS Outlook, which assumes by default that everyone else in the world also uses Outlook. The ideal solution is convincing your friends to stop using Outlook. The practical solution is TNEFs Enough.

  • Mail won't delete messages from Iphone unless I open Mail.

I have an Exchange account set up and use MS Outlook at work.  I do receive my email via push on my Iphone 4s.  However, when I delete a message from my MS Outlook at work, it won't delete from my Iphone UNLESS I open up Mail.  Anyone else have this issue?
I did change the setting of pushing my delete items folder in the mail settings on my Iphone.  Still did nothing.

One more thing to check on your computer...iCal>Preferences...>Accounts>Account Information>iCloud>Refresh Calendars:>Push
If that is not helpful, go through the procedures listed in iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar.

  • Help me ditch Outlook! Apple Mail doesn't display messages for all accounts. Thoughts?

I have two IMAP accounts, both GMail. One account always shows messages (Gmail in the screenshot below) but the other usually does not. I've deleted the account, rebuilt it etc and nothing works. When I do get messages to display, as soon as I change folders then go back the messages have disappeared again.
Both accounts are set up the same way. One the account that is not working (Ruddell Consulting in the screen shot), I see the total unread message count under the Mailboxes window but the sort column and preview windows are blank. When viewing the common inbox I only see mail from one account.
I'm trying to get rid of Outlook 2011 but with the same account settings in Outlook 2011 both accounts work as expected so I'm stuck with it until I can get this resolved.
    Any thoughts?Thanks!
    Jim

I found the problem. Or at least a workaround. I use Google Mail and some folders in my Gmail account were causing problems for Apple Mail. I removed the folders and Mail works as it should.

  • Apple Mail, won't sort message on server

Apple Mail 7 on Mavericks, when I display my account's email messages  still stored on the ISP server (account information), it is no longer possible to sort them by categories (dimension, date, sender, etc.).
Previously it was possible: is it a bug or has been removed as a feature (very useful to delete old message from the server !!).

I'm not talking about the email messages stored locally on my computer.
It's not the main Mail window I'm talking about.
Let's see if I can make me clear.
The step to reproduce the problems are:
1- click on your account's INBOX incoming mail contextual menu
    2- select "account informations"
3- this will open the "account informations" window, showing all your email messages still archived on your ISP server (not only your local mail).
4- In this window it is no loger possible to order the mail messages by date, sender, dimenstion etc
    See short movie here:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8222823/Mail_account_info.mp4
BTW, you'll see in the movie that Mail messages are ordered (why?) by dimension.
What if I'd like to select and delete all the old message from 3 days ago?

All of a sudden my email messages will not show. I checked with the connection doctor, everything is fine. As I "Get New Mail From Mailbox" it shows 128 messages but doesn't download them for viewing. If I "get account info" on the mailbox in question it shows all the new messages on the server, but still won't get them loaded on the viewer. Have you tried rebuilding the mailbox? Select the account in your Inbox, then choose Mailbox > Rebuild and wait for it to finish. Then restart Mail and see if the problem continues.
