Mail won't download "undeliverable" warning messages

Hi
My employer runs an Exchange server and Mail normally interacts with it ok.
If I send a message which (for whatever reason) doesn't get through, then the Exchange system sends me a message warning me that my original message is undeliverable. And there's the problem: Mail doesn't see these warning messages. The only indication I have is that the unread message count for the account goes up by one but then drops back to zero when I try to see the unread message. I have to go to another mail client to delete these warning messages. Looking at the text of the warning messages, they look just like any other email. I have no filters etc which would stop them from getting through.
Any suggestions please?
Bob

Hi Bob.
If the Exchange server does this in a non-standard way, that could be the cause of the problem, but I don’t really know the details nor how to solve it. Take a look at the following thread:
False unread message count using Exchange
The other thread you mention in your post appears to be a rules issue. I haven’t replied there because the OP has already stated what the problem probably is, but appears to have done nothing to address it yet...

  • Mail won't download any new messages.

    Updated to 10.6.2 recently.
Today I have noticed that mail, although checking for new mail, doesn't show any new messages. This despite the ping sounding off to indicate new mail.
The only way to see any new messages is to shut mail down and open it back up.

Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings to be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.

I keep getting a message "The MobileMe IMAP server ... rejected the password for ...."  I can use that password when I go to iCloud (and to this discussion), but my e-mails won't download to my computer.  What's the mix-up?

If the setting is greyed out perhaps you have restrictions enabled that would prevent someone from changing accounts. Settings>General>Restrictions>Allow Changes>Accounts.

  • Mail won't download from server

I downloaded the new software on my iPhone 4 and installed it.  Now my yahoo mail won't download from the server.  I rebooted, deleted the mail account and reinstalled, and restored the software too.  Any ideas?

Not knowing what’s really going on here, and since re-creating Envelope Index apparently didn’t work, you may try setting up Mail again from scratch, as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    4. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. If Mail works fine now, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that may help to fix that.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you wish and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

I reply yes but its not saved. Any suggestions

On the left, you should have a list of keychains and categories. If not, Select Show Keychains from the View menu.
Select the login keychain and All Items in the Category.
In the search field, type something that will help find your  account keychains, like "gmail."
Select the keychain for your email account password and delete it.

  • Mail 3.6 won't download new POP messages

I have 7 POP accounts running under Mail 3.6. Almost a month ago, one of the accounts stopped downloading new messages, and now, a second account has done the same. I've tried deleting the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded files and rebuilt the mailboxes. Still, no success. In the lower left of the screen, Mail will show that it's apparently trying to download messages, but the download rate quickly drops to zero, and the process quits with nothing new taken off the server. When looking at the Account Info, there are a large number of "Sender Unknown" messages, all with a received date of "Today". I know these to be mostly valid messages that were NOT received today, so I'm reluctant to remove them from the server (a suggestion I read on another forum). Any ideas on how to restore functionality? I do know that the problem is NOT on the ISP end (Cox), as I'm able to receive mail just fine on Evolution running under Ubuntu. Thanks very much for any help!

HOLY COW!!!! This problem has been driving me NUTS! Like most of you, my Mail simply stopped downloading new messages. No notifications, flashing lights, or buzzers.... just stopped. iPhone continued to dnld messages, and Mail continued to send, but nothing new for the inbox. I had done e'thing... rebuilt my account on my email server, rebuilt my account in Mail, deleted all the preferences.... nothing. Like Brian, I had a pile of messages sitting on the server, even though iPhone had downloaded them already, so I started deleting them one-by-one. And that's when I found it.... one flipping email that would not download, would not delete, would not do anything. I couldn't delete it server side, and I couldn't delete it from Mail. Apparently this was the booger screwing e'thing up, so, frustrated, and as a last resort, I simply clicked on it from w/in my webmail server to open it............ and *poof!* it disappeared. Problem gone. Mail working. What the crap caused that?

  • Mail won't download messages with large attachments

    Mac OS 10.7.5
    Apple Mail 5.3 (1283)
When someone sends an email to me with an attachment of around 4 or 5 MB or larger (I haven’t quite figured out the size limit…it seems to vary a bit), Mail stops downloading all mail. I have to go into my webmail, remove the message with the attachment, and then all of a sudden Apple Mail will resume downloading e-mails from the server. Other computers in our office do not exhibit this behaviour, although they are using identical network, mail server (at Siteground, not managed by us), version of Mail, version of OS, etc.
When Mail exhibits this, I can ‘Get Info’ the account and I can see all the messages marked as from ‘Unknown sender’ and the e-mail sizes.
    How do I resolve this?

Try AttachedIn to send large attachments!
Very quick, easy to use and secured!

  • Mail app - new account won't download all the messages

    Hi,
I setup a new email account on Mail and it downloaded 250 of my emails, but then it stops at March 23rd. If I log onto yahoo, all the new emails are there and it was working fine when I was using Thunderbird.
In fact, under mail activity, if I click on get mail it says it's downloading 161 more emails, but it never displays in the inbox. And if I click on the Get Info for that mailbox, it actually shows all my new emails under "Messages on Server".
Is there a way to get the messages to be retrieved under the inbox? I've tried deleting the account and re-adding it, but it keeps stopping at the same date. I've also added two other email accounts and those downloaded fine (also POP accounts).

    Hi, Welcome!
Someone in the 10.5 Mail forum would be more able to help you.

  • Mail won't download since 26th Sept

    Hi,
I have 3 email accounts all with yahoo but one of these accounts won't download new email since the 26th Sept. I can't see anything different to the other accounts. I know there is new mail as I am receiving it on my iphone and can see it through the yahoo mail browser.
I created a new account in mail with the problem yahoo account details and it replicated all of the emails except those since the 26th Sept basically giving me the same result as the original account in mail.
There are no error messages and it looks as if it is checking periodically for new mail as I would expect. I have no problems sending mail.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks in advance...

I haven't been able to use mail since I got this new G5 with 10.5.5 loaded.
In short, Apple took a perfectly good program (Mail) and loaded it with crap, thereby destroying it.
MAIL IS CRAP NOW, pure and simple!
I wasted hours and hours trying to get this garbage software to work, but NOTHING.
I finally gave up and switched to Thunderbird, which works just fine. Unfortunately, Address Book is now useless, so I have to MANUALLY transfer ALL the contact info I've acquired over the past 12 years and MANUALLY re-enter all the data into Thunderbird, because APPLE, in their INFINITE wisdom, made it IMPOSSIBLE to export Address Book info as a csv or tab delimited file.
***??? Was Apple taken over by Micro$oft or something?

  • Mail trying to download an email message already deleted from the server

And it won't download anything else. How do I get the program to recognize that this message has already been deleted?

    Try the following.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.
Delete the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and if successful, any previously downloaded messages that remain on the server will be downloaded again along with any new messages available at the server that have not been downloaded.

  • Mail won't download over Wi-Fi, only over O2 signal?

I've just got a replacement iPhone (stuck pixel issue with the last one) and have encountered a little e-mail problem.
When I am connected to my home Wi-Fi network (via my iMac), my mail doesn't download from my ISP's POP account. They only successfully download when I'm connected via O2 (no EDGE in my area at the moment, so it's just a regular connection), and all I get is a message saying "The connection to the server failed". I know there is sure to be a very simple answer that is looking me right in the face at this very moment, but I'm not sure what it is! Is it a problem with my router? It's a cabled DSL connection via Ethernet.
Any help or advice would sure go a long way at the moment!
    Thanks in advance.

Okay - it seems that maybe no one else has had this problem so I will try and be a little more specific in what the issue seems to be.
I have two mail accounts - one is .Mac and the other is a POP account via my ISP (which living in Hull is Karoo). When I try and download mail via my Wi-Fi connection, the .Mac account works just as it should and any attached images download with the mail. With the POP ISP account, the mail does not download when I am connected via Wi-Fi but downloads fine when connected via O2. Can anyone give me the slightest clue as to why this is and what I can do to solve it?
    Many thanks.
