Mail won't go online

When I click Get Mail I only get the triangle by the Inbox. The error message is "The server XXXX refused to allow a connection on port 995". This is the port that has always been in use. This is a pop3 account. I have checked all settings and verified & repaired permissions. It worked fine two hours ago. Any helpful ideas out there. Thanks.

Nothing that I'm aware of. I just know for sure that since I got my iMac in mid March it has been that way and has worked. I have a neighbor that got me into Mac's and we set mine up the same as his at the time and it worked. Maybe something my ISP is doing differently now. Seems they would have advised all users if that was the case. Oh well, it works now and that is the important thing. Thanks again.

  • Mac Mail won't go online

I am using a MAC PRO version 10.6.7, I recently went with Charter cable and opened a new e-mail account with charter. The mailbox worked fine with embarqmail and Gmail but it won't go online with Charter and I can't send mail unless I go online and sign into Charter. Is there a fix or just quit Charter and go back to satellite?

  • Mail won't go online with IMAP but Exchange works

Mac mail has beeen working fine for me for many years. Last day or so all my non Exhcange accounts won't go online. I read through the forum. I have checked the connection doctor. It is "unable to contact server". I tried network utility to port scan the IMAPS port. That worked just fine. I do have a software firewall called Little Snitch. I checked all the rules in there. There are no block rules for mac Mail. I also dissabled the the firewall with no results. I was hoping to get my primary gmail account working. So I removed it and re-added it. No luck.
I think this problem may be related to SSL certificates. At work we have a firewall that does SSL termination. It has a self signed certificate on it. I have often gotten mismatched SSL warnings when picking up mail. I can't seem to find the SSL certificates anywhere on the mac so I don't know where to delete them. Removing and re-adding the gmail account should have refreshed the SSL certificate. So thism may not be the issue.
    Any suggestions would really help.

Rebooting the Mac fixed the problem. I have no idea why. Still unable to locate the mail ssl certificates.

  • My icloud e-mail won't come online.  Keeps telling me there's a user/password error

I'm trying to bring my email online but I keep getting the same messge that icloud can't connect.  When I run online doctor, it says the connection to the internet is good but all the red dots have a user/password error.  I've gone through every password/user combo i've ever used and no dice.  All of this didnt' start happening until I installed mountain lion.  How do I fix this?

Your talking about the network preferences? Delete all those red dots.. (minus sign) then just put what you need back (plus sign). If you are wireless... then choose wifi. If you have an eithernet cable connected to your computer choose eithernet. Also to the right of those "red lights" There is something that says Location. Select Edit locations then press the plus sign and call it Automatic 2. Then delete all the other locations including the one that says Automatic. Then just rename the Automatic 2 back to Automatic.

  • My icloud mail won't go "online"

I've tried sychronizing and taking it on line and nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this?

When I try to sign out, it asks me if I want to keep contacts, remove notes and calendars from my iMac, (which I was okay with), but it also says if I turn off photo stream photos that have not been imported will be deleted from my computer. This concerns me. I appreciate your help so much - I don't really know much about iCloud and I'm afraid to lose stuff.

  • Mail keeps asking for password but won't go online

I am having multiple problems with passwords on my MB Pro -- FYI running 10.9.   Just fixed a problem with being unable to get into my admin account because I didn't know the password; got that fixed then had problems with keychains - still having.  Keeps asking if I want to go back to default keychain (don't get the keychain thing as it is).  Now both emails are offline and Mail keeps asking me to enter passwords but then it won't go online.  could use some advice or links to fixes

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select

    Hello,
Who is your eMail provider, the part after the @ sign?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

  • Imap accounts won't go online

A very strange thing started to happen to my Macbook Pro since yesterday. My Imap accounts won't go online. My internet is working fine. My POP accounts sync normally. When I try to put the Imap accounts online Mail gives me the following message "error 51 - network is unreacheable". I have no idea of how to correct this.
    Thanks for helping,

Well, I don’t know what could be the problem either, but something to look at is that there is nothing wrong with your network settings.
In particular, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that makes a difference -- if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.

  • HT204075 email account won't stay online

Mac email connects to the internet but can't connect to the POP server or the SMTP server, so I can't send or receive. Checked all settings and they're correct. Settings show the mail account is "offline" but it won't stay online for more than a few seconds when I click "take all accounts online.

Triple-click the word "telnet" in the line below on this page to select the whole line:
    telnet pop.centurytel.net 995
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You should almost instantly get three or more lines of output below what you entered, one of which is this:
    Escape character is '^]'.
If there's no output within ten seconds, consider that a failure. If you get something different from the above, please post it in a reply. You can then quit Terminal.

  • Just set up icloud and now mail won't...

I just set up icloud on my mac and now my mail won't recognize my password. Formerly, on mobileme i had the main computer which was pre-intel so now I'm switching to my intel mac. Everything is fine on cloud, all the data is there, but on my computers (intel computer and also pre-intel) when I try to check my mail it keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the password. I get mail fine on my iphone, and when I log into icloud but not on my computers (pre-intel or intel).

It's because you are using Leopard.  You will need to either upgrade your Mac to Snow Leopard then Lion or manually set up mail on your Mac in Mac Mail.  http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html is a link to a tutorial online on how to set up your mail manually on your Mac.  MobileMe is offering a free upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  The link is me.com/snow-leopard.  You can redeem a free disc to get your Mac to Snow Leopard, you will have to pay for the upgrade to Lion yourself though.

  • Upgraded Panther to Tiger: now Mail won't download email from Sympatico

    Hi there,
If someone wouldn't mind advising... I just ugraded my wife's powerbook from Panther to Tiger (10.4.9)... and even though her email settings are still the same (incoming server, outgoing server, etc.), Mail won't collect her email from the Sympatico site.
Do I have to get rid of her Mail prefs and re-boot? Or something? (if it's the former, which prefs exactly, and where are they?).
    thanks,
    Malcolm

You can always delete your account from Mail and re-create it... There are 2 kinds of account settings for a Sympatico account:
The "old ones" that have the same settings since Sympatico started 10 years ago:
    Username: b1**##
    Password: access password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pop6.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp1.sympatico.ca
Port server 25 for Outgoing (SMTP)
Port server 110 for Incoming (POP3)
The other Sympatico e-mail is the enhance one with MSN. The settings are differents and the authentification is different. Any new Sympatico accounts since June 2004 are on that new plaform:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: e-mail password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pophm.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtphm.sympatico.ca
    Verify that your server is set to requires anthentiation with agin your Sympatico e-mail and Sympatico password;
Both servers, Outgoing and Incoming, require a secure connection (SSL)
If you are not sure witch is what try to login online at: http://www.sympaticomail.sympatico.ca it will tell you if can upgrade to new enhance e-mail or if you sign in like a Hotmail account if you are already enhance.
    I hope this help....
    Cheers

  • Mail won't bring in new .mac mail

The application Mail won't bring in new mail but it shows up on .mac webmail. Any suggestions?

Have you confirmed if the account is online?
At the menu bar, go to Mailbox > Online Status. Is "Take (the name of your .Mac account) Online available?
Do you perform manual checks for new mail on occasion? The reason I ask, is your .Mac account included to be automatically checked for new mail?
Since you are accessing your .Mac account as a .Mac account which is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way, have you tried using the Rebuild Mailbox function on the account's Inbox mailbox which forces the mailbox to be resynchronized with the server?

  • Mail cannot take accounts online

I have seven email accounts with different providers, mostly of the likes of mail.com. I am not sure whether that is relevant. The real issue is that when I change from one wi-fi network to another, like home and work, Mail will be unable to take accounts online unless I restart my MBP. I have been trying some Mail setting changes as largely discussed over many other threads and no matter what I do, Mail won't work get the accounts online. However, when I to System Prefs / Accounts I get this message when clicking on the individual accounts: "Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can continue without a secured password, which could put your password at risk." I cancel and I am prompted for the passwords, but I get the same message over and over again. Has anybody got a solution for this?
