Mail won't launch after 10.4.7 update

Clicking on it doesn't do anything. It says it was launched, but it must be exiting right away.

Thanks. Did as you suggested:

I've tried verifying the disk, and repairing the desk, but can't find a fix.  It won't launch at all ever since the Mavericks upgrade.

If you did not install the software following the upgrade but did some form of transfer or migration then you should probably uninstall and then use the Cleaner Tool.  After that install using the discs or a downloaded set  of installation files.

  • Mail won't launch after latest update

I have tried the shift key and moving the Mail cache folder to the desktop with no luck.
    Mail will simply not launch.
I suppose I will have to do an archive/install unless anybody here has any other ideas.

Please, clarify. Is it that Mail doesn’t launch at all, or that it freezes upon start up? These are completely different problems, but your post gives the impression that you have the former and have tried things meant for the later...
Also, checking what happens on another user account isn’t supposed to “help”, but rather is meant to determine whether the problem is system-wide or confined to a particular user account, which isn’t clear from your post either...
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail won't launch after Migration to another Mac

I had to migrate my wife's account from a 10.6 machine to a 10.5 machine (trading with my daughter, her mac has a damaged airport and weak wifi and she is heading off to college). The mail application will not even launch (it tries and dies giving me the option to reset and retry with no luck). I wonder if there is an incompatibility between 10.6 mail files (Mail app version 4) and Mail v3.6 on the 10.5.8 machine?
I tried removing to the destkop the com.apple.mail.plist with no luck. I even moved the mailbox folder to the desktop (hoping to get a new mail account and import old mail) - still no launching.
Eventually I will upgrade to 10.6 on this machine, but have to install more memory (tried to install 10.6 refused to load due to too little memory). Can I install mail 4.0 by itself?
Any help would be really appreciated.

I also tried two other "virgin" accounts and Mail does not open/launch. So from reading elsewhere this implies it is not the mail data on my wife's account.
This computer was just upgraded from 10.4.x to 10.5.8 through all the updates. I checked tonight and there is no Mail update. But I don't know if Mail was working in 10.4.x as my daughter did not use Mail (she accessed a web mail account).
Any thoughts? I have the Leopard install disks. Can I try installing Mail only?

  • Powerpoint 14.3.2 won't launch after 10.8.3 update

Just did a 10.8.3 update and Powerpoint 14.3.2 (the latest Office 2011 version) won't launch properly.  It fires up, puts up a couple little windows after the initial launch screen (which I can't read because it happens too fast), and the Powerpoint app menu appears on top left, but no files can be opened.  Any ideas or other reports of this behavior?
    Anurag

Well, turns out that the files were opened (as can be seen with a CTRL-up arrow in Mission Control) but won't show on the screen. While in Mission Control, I moved the icons around and then a tiny window showed up on top left.  It's been working thereafter.
There has got to be a way to roll back an update.  This is the second time an update has interfered with my ability to work when I most needed things to work.

  • Mail Won't Launch After Upgrade to OS X vs.10.5.8

After installing the OS X 10.5.8 upgrade, I get a message "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X" when I try to launch the Mail application. I looked, but there is no newer version of Mail available...my software is fully up to date.

    Hi,
I have done this update, and Mail is working. The update to 10.5.8 did change Mail's version number, so the issue that must be considered is whether anything has caused the 10.5.8 Update to not advance Mail.
Is the Mail app properly in the Applications folder, in its root level, and not ever renamed? In the Applications folder, control-click on the Mail app Icon, and use Get Info -- what version is reported? It should be 3.6 and show having been modified at the same time as your update to 10.5.8? If Mail could be opened, which I understand it cannot for you, the exact version would be Mail 3.6 (936), and previously is was Mail 3.6 (935/935.3) if memory serves me correctly.
Use Spotlight to search to see if there is more than one copy of a Mail app on your Mac.

  • Safari, itunes, ichat, Mail won't launch after the 10.5.2 update. Help!

    Hi there,
I did the 10.5.2 update last night. It went pretty well. Everything was looking normal. I could launch everything. Today when I tried to open Safari, itunes, ichat and mail I got messages saying " The app closed unexpectedly"and I try multiples times to relaunch all of them and so far I just cannot open them.
The log says always the same as below (ichat) for all of the apps (safari, itunes, ichat, mail):

    Anything at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html helpful?
The link you posted didn't work for me so I tried this one:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html
    To dmick,
The suggestions on the page were written for Tiger, but seem to apply just as well to Leopard. Their number one solution, because of the multiple programs failing, is a possible system font problem. A free program that might help you manage and clean up font problems is here:
http://www.linotype.com/2631/freedownloadmac.html - It's been updated for 10.5.2 and specifies that you turn off “Automatic font activation” in Font Book’s preferences.
In addition, repairing permissions (which I mentioned first because you should do it anyway) may not be enough so you might use a tool like CockTail LE to clean the system caches and a host of other repairs and settings.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33453
I use tools like CockTail very sparingly, but when you have a system running as poorly as yours is, you don't have much to lose.
Back up your important files and/or turn off Time Machine before making major changes to the system.

  • Mail won't open after 10.5.4 update

Hi can anyone help me please.
I updated to OS 10.5.4 this morning and immediately after restarting I tried to open my mail app. and I keep getting the message "The application Mail quit unexpectedly".
Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how to fix it please.
Thanks in advance for any help
    Jen

I always make a back up of my apple mail folder and save the copy in my documents or user folder.
Go into Library file, in your user folder, find the file in your preferences folder
    com.apple.mail.plist (delete this file.)
Then open your apple mail. You will need to re enter user info, click OK
Try it, see if mail still quits.
    If that doesn't work
Find the mail folder in your user Library folder, make sure you have a back up of your emails.
Delete this folder. You will need to enter some of the settings again.
Open mail and see if it quits. If it doesn't quit the you can import your mail back into the new mail folder that was generated when you entered your settings.
If all else fails take the computer to your Apple Service Provider

  • Mail doesn't launch after 10.5.7 update

    Hello,
After updating to 10.5.7 everything works fine - except Mail. The dock icon bounces one or two times and then stops. There is no error message, no beach ball and the blue dot below the icon doesn't appear either. Before the update Mail worked perfectly fine. No plug-ins were installed.
I already tried using the combo update, repair permissions and remove caches. Any other ideas?

I can't provide any help unfortunately. But I can chime in that my Mail starts to download mail, then stops after a couple of emails, spinning beachball, then quits unexpectedly. This is after the 10.5.7 update and repairing disk permissions. I also tried taking all accounts offline (so it wouldn't just crash immediately) and then doing a rebuild. The existing emails disappear and nothing seems to happen. Those emails reappear after quitting Mail and opening it again thankfully, but it makes no difference with the downloading emails crashing. I can also confirm that it isn't just a corrupt email since I've gone to webmail and deleted all new emails only to have it happen again when using Mail downloading brand new emails. I have a very simple email set up with one cable broadband email account and a few simple anti-spam rules. Worked perfectly prior to 10.5.7.

  • Iphoto won't launch after 10.6.8 update, info.plist lost

After I updated, iPhoto would seem to start--it was in the menu bar, but most commands were greyed out and no library was visible or available.  I remembered it was a good idea to trash preferences, so I trashed the Info.plist file.  I also moved com.apple.iphoto.plist or the like.  Then iPhoto's icon turned into a generic app icon and I can't even get the menu bar to become iPhoto.  I found this:
iPhoto[1303]: No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist file, exiting
    com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[97] ([0x0-0xcb0cb].com.apple.iPhoto[1303]): Exited with exit code: 1
I may have lost the Info.plist forever in my (ironic) efforts to get iPhoto to work again!
    Help?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Bloomberg app won't launch after v2.0.5 update

I downloaded the latest Bloomberg update (v2.0.5) into iTunes on my Mac Pro, and then I connected and synced my iPod Touch. My Bloomberg app now fails to launch. The initial Bloomberg screen appears for a few seconds, but then I get sent back to the main iPod Touch screen. Shutting down and restarting my iPod did not help, nor did re-synching via iTunes.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Did you find a solution? Is it possible to revert my Bloomberg app back to its previous version without affecting all my other apps? Thanks!
    Don

is it just the bloomberg app, or is it others?
this is quite a common problem, which normally affects all apps. the two solutions generally suggested are a reset of the ipod (hold down home and power button until you get an apple on the screen) or downloading another app (any seems to do it)
if you downloaded it via your computer, have you tried downloading it straight to you ipod using wifi? or have you tried deleting it and downloading it again?
if it is just that app, it may be a problem with the update, in which case it may be a good idea to contact the manufacturer/go to their website and see if any problems have been reported in any forums they may have.
another thing i've just thought of, and i'm not sure whether this will work, but when i go into the apps folder via mymusic and itunes, (on a windows machine, not sure about mac) there are usually multiple versions of the same app listed if they've been upgraded. you could try deleting the most recent one and then resyncing.

  • IPhoto won't launch after 10.4.9 update

I updated via software update to 10.4.9, but now iPhoto won't open. It sits at the "loading photos" screen for a minute or two with a spinning beach ball and then quits. I tried reinstalling the update from apple's website but that didn't help either. Thankfully, the pictures are still on the hard drive.
    What to do?
    15" MacBook Pro 2.33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I just spent a few hours on the phone w/ Apple Care, we did end up ditching that file, as well as a few others. Lets just say this, I am now forced to rebuild my library from the Originals folder.
It's my own fault for not backing up before updating. Stupid.

  • Dashboard, software update, itunes, imail, won't launch after 10.5.2 update

subject says it all. Each app starts for about 2 seconds then crashes. Then the following: "application ______ quits unexpectedly." I updated to 10.5.2 and all other suggested updates. What next? Tried downloading iTunes and installing. Disk permissions are fine. Error example follows:

It sounds like the update became corrupt doing the transfer to your machine. What I would do is boot to the install disk and perform an archive and install and then download the update directly from the site.

  • ID CS4 won't launch after 6.0.6. update

It just bounces one time in the dock. Anyone else?
    - repaired permissions
    - restarted
    - went back to 6.0.5
    thanks

I'm quite pleased to hear that Adobe is issuing an update for an older version of ID; it marks a welcome divergence from previous patch-behavior on Adobe's part. However, I never update anything the moment a patch comes out, unless it's patching a major vulnerability and the exposed vulnerability would be worse than the hassle deriving from a broken application. That being said, take a look at this:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-24.html
Hmm. I'm torn; maybe I should run the update right away.

  • Mail won't launch problem
