Mail won't launch under OS 10.4.7

I just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7...installed all updates, repaired permissions, etc.
When I launch Mail, I get this error message:
Link (dyld) error:
Symbol not found: _DeleteSeenPOPMessagesCompleted
Referenced from: /Applications/MALTX_r10c2/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Versions/B/Message
I have no clue as to how to fix this. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

How did you install Tiger over Panther - Upgrade or Archive & Install selecting preserve user and network settings?
Did you check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from the Tiger install disc before proceeding with the install?
I believe this error message comes from trying to launch/run the Panther Mail.app version with Tiger which shouldn't be possible after installing Tiger over Panther.
Were you using any third party "haxies" or plugins for the Mail.app under Panther?

  • Mail won't launch since Lion upgrade

I've just upgraded to Lion and now Mail won't launch.  It appears in the title bar but doesn't launch, it also won't quit.  Any ideas?  I'm worried about losing all my mail.

I had the same problem, and tried recommendations that were posted on other threads. It finally occurred to me that I should try signing out and back in on the Mobile Me system preference and it worked. Hope this helps...

  • Mail won't launch since downloading Mavericks

Just downloaded Mavericks and Mail won't launch at all.  Everything else seems ok.  Anyone else experienced this?  And found a solution?  Thanks.

Ditto with Mavericks on a new rMBP. Migrated data over from another MBP on Mountain Lion, Mail.app hangs on launch on the new one (with Mavericks.)

  • Mail won't launch nor its settings save/ allow changes after 2.0

Anyone else have this ? Mail just won't launch ; opens to the main scroll screen, which stays blank, with the top and bottom bars showing – the bottom bar showing the refresh and write buttons – and then quits. Also, I cannot delete my MobileMe or GMail account, nor edit them.
Though with the MM account, if I try to delete it, it disables all of the push functions except mail. Things that I've been trying to do, like change whether the Trash folder autodeletes mail or not and the name of the account, don't save at all. The Trash delete frequency change stays in place as long as I'm in the Mail settings ; the name change doesn't hold at all.
In the second setting 'pane' in Settings – "Nouvelles Données" in French, so I guess "New Data" ? – down in Advanced, there are two MobileMe Push accounts listed. The first one saying it syncs calendars and contacts, and the second one mail... Yet I only have one MM account set up, or so says the uneditable Mail settings.
Nor can I (re)add my MM and GMail accounts. Trying to add a Yahoo account I never put on the also failed.
    I've restarted my touch too.
Sounds like one of those things that when on a Mac, deleting a plist or fixing permissions would be suggested... I can't find a similar Settings-related problem anywhere on the internet either.
    Reïnstall?

I've tried verifying the disk, and repairing the desk, but can't find a fix.  It won't launch at all ever since the Mavericks upgrade.

If you did not install the software following the upgrade but did some form of transfer or migration then you should probably uninstall and then use the Cleaner Tool.  After that install using the discs or a downloaded set  of installation files.

  • Mail won't launch and OS X needs to repair Library to run applications

My primary account works fine.  Wife's mail wouldn't launch and indication is Library needs to be repaired.   Would it be best to delete problem account? Checking other discussions revealed that the ....mail/plist  was missing in preferences.
Appreciate help to get into this problem.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Problem with Safari - now Mail won't launch

I recently also posted this in the Powerbook G4 15" forum, as I couldn't get the link to the Safari forum to work...
I was having trouble with Safari, which kept quitting every time I visited a site that used a certain type of code (not sure what, possibly Java or Flash). I downloaded and installed the Safari 3 Universal version in the hope of improving the situation, but that killed off Safari itself, plus Mail, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. I then trashed Safari 3; I've just found an old version of Safari 1.3, which I've now installed. It's working fine, but Mail still won't launch. I can't even find anywhere where I can download Mail again! Can anyone help? I'd be very grateful, as it has my entire email archive stored within it.
    Thank you!
    - Kitty.

The Safari 3 install updates a few system frameworks that are used by other applications. Those frameworks that were added were designed to work with 10.4, not 10.3 which is why so many other programs are now having problems as well.
The easiest way to undo this is probably to perform an Archive & Install of 10.3 (and choose "Preserve user and network settings"):

  • Mail won't launch

Late 2009 iMac.... mail suddenly won't launch.  It opens then I get the spinning beach ball.  After a time it offers to Quit or Quit and Rebuild ;  I chose rebuild which is supposed to fix issues but it has not.  Using 2 gmail accounts on Mail and it has work flawless until now.  My wife recently deleted a ton of old emails from this account using her ipad.  Not sure if that had anything to do with this?
I tried deleting Mail from dock and copying a fresh Mail from applications but that didn't work either
    any help would be appreciated.

Typically, the deletion of mails via iPad should not cause trouble, since the mails are then deleted only on the Google server. They would simply not show up in e.g. inboxes on the Mac anymore after next sync.
The fact that Mail offers you Rbuild indicates that there's something wrong with the mail 'database', but since rebuilding doesn't help... hmm.
    Do you have a backup?
It won't hurt, especially if no backup exists (?!), we may try finding the cause of the trouble:
Launch Console from Applications -> Utilities. Perhaps you'll see some Mail related errors at the bottom of the window already. Otherwise try launching Mail again, and click Rebuild again. When that should be done, check Console, and copy and paste all related messages into a post here. (I trust it won't be hundreds... we don't want to see that many here...)

It says the installation failed due to an error in the installation program and that I should contact Microsoft.

  • TS3899 iPad 2 mail won't launch with newly installed iOS 8.3. Help please.

I Upgraded to iOS 8.3 and now mail won't start on my iPad 2

I Am having similar issues with both IPad Air 2 and IPhone 6 since 8.3 upgrade
    i also have a hotmail.co.uk email address
i also have issues with outlook iOS app version 1.1.4 since this update
prior to update I would get mails to both Apple Mail app and also Outlook App and could manage them in either and the files would delete or move in the opposite app.
since 8.3 I am definitely having sync issues with what I want to do.
it is either a hotmail issue or an 8.3 issue however the fact my gmail app and apple mail app still sync correctly I am leaning toward it being a Microsoft mail issue but I could be wrong.
I Have uninstalled and reinstalled outlook app and have deleted hotmail address and reinstalled but made no difference.
the only thing left would be to reset iPad and iPhone but hoping I won't have to do that.

  • Mail won't launch after Migration to another Mac

I had to migrate my wife's account from a 10.6 machine to a 10.5 machine (trading with my daughter, her mac has a damaged airport and weak wifi and she is heading off to college). The mail application will not even launch (it tries and dies giving me the option to reset and retry with no luck). I wonder if there is an incompatibility between 10.6 mail files (Mail app version 4) and Mail v3.6 on the 10.5.8 machine?
I tried removing to the destkop the com.apple.mail.plist with no luck. I even moved the mailbox folder to the desktop (hoping to get a new mail account and import old mail) - still no launching.
Eventually I will upgrade to 10.6 on this machine, but have to install more memory (tried to install 10.6 refused to load due to too little memory). Can I install mail 4.0 by itself?
Any help would be really appreciated.

I also tried two other "virgin" accounts and Mail does not open/launch. So from reading elsewhere this implies it is not the mail data on my wife's account.
This computer was just upgraded from 10.4.x to 10.5.8 through all the updates. I checked tonight and there is no Mail update. But I don't know if Mail was working in 10.4.x as my daughter did not use Mail (she accessed a web mail account).
Any thoughts? I have the Leopard install disks. Can I try installing Mail only?

  • Mail won't launch after latest update

I have tried the shift key and moving the Mail cache folder to the desktop with no luck.
    Mail will simply not launch.
I suppose I will have to do an archive/install unless anybody here has any other ideas.

Please, clarify. Is it that Mail doesn’t launch at all, or that it freezes upon start up? These are completely different problems, but your post gives the impression that you have the former and have tried things meant for the later...
Also, checking what happens on another user account isn’t supposed to “help”, but rather is meant to determine whether the problem is system-wide or confined to a particular user account, which isn’t clear from your post either...
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

    Tim,
Thanks for the suggestion. As it turns out, I did not install X11 from the original DVD set that came with my MacBook Pro, but rather from the Apple Store Tiger package. When I installed it from the DVD that came with my Mac, it worked. I appreciate your help!

  • Mail Won't Launch - Message Says Home Folder is Full Must Delete Files

I having been using Mail 2.0.7 with relatively few annoyances until today when I launched the application only to have a window pop up that says "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." The only option is to Quit. The 30GB hard drive is half full. The home folder has a little over 6GB in it. I deleted a few larger files and still get this message. I re-installed the application using Pacifist. Still the same prohibition.
