Mail won't open after download on macbook pro

I did the download on my macbook pro today and now my mail icon has disappeared and there is a new different looking one in its place.  Please HELP if you know anything about this?

The new icon looks much different, with a pencil and paint brush forming the letter A with a ruler in the middle.(see below) The download was a software update it kept prompting me to update.  (SecUpd2012-004.dmg)  Also, when I click on this new mail icon, it just flashes at me and nothing opens.

iTunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?  And by the way, this is apparently a common problem and Apple has completely failed to warn in advance or offer a quick straightforward solution - used to be a good company, but it's becoming just another crappy screw-the-consumer corporation.

It would help to know versions here.  I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed.  Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago.  If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses.  Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

  • ITunes won't open after downloading 7.0

My iTunes won't open after downloading 7.0, what should I do?

    replying to Robert
I get a Windows error code of 0x666D743F
    First see:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes fails to launch with an unknown error
    There are some other possibilities
That error has been known to be produced by having Total Recorder or the Volume Logic plug-in installed on the PC.
For a workaround for Total Recorder, see:

To check on the Volume Logic issue, see:

I use the free Unarchiver: http://unarchiver.c3.cx/unarchiver
I have just tested it on a self-extracting Windows Internet Explorer and it opened it first time on my Mac.
However, as you have been told, normally Windows executable files cannot be opened or used on Macs.

  • E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download.

    E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download. It appears to have completely downloaded, but it won't open.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit iBooks and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If neither of these things help, delete the book and download it again. As long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought it with, you will not have to pay for it again.

  • Mail won't open after computer falls asleep - forced to force quit!

    Hi there,
My mail won't open 85% of the time unless I force quit and restart my computer. Then, after my computer goes to sleep, I click on the stamp on my dock, and nothing happens. My computer says its still open. I've tried quitting mail and reopening from my Applications folder, but still, nothing happens, and I have to force quit my computer and restart so I can get/send my mail.
Any one have an idea for me? I have my gmail and another personal email set up as IMAP. Could there be a glitch in the way I set that up? Mail seems to come and go fine, when it's active.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm having the exact same problem and it really just started a couple days ago.

I downloaded Lion from the app store, now my garageband won't open. Also I use Pro tools 8.4 and that won't work either!
I would appreciate any help or advice.

If it is the third party apps crashing - try downloading another app - any free app is fine. See if that resets the other apps.

  • Mail won't open after update

Why won't my mail open after OSX update?  How do I get it going again?  Thanks! Kent

I had the same problem - my Mail was in the wrong place, and the updater made an inoperable app file. Fortunately, I was able to re-install the update and get the new version of Mail working. I did the following:
    1) downloaded the updater image file from Apple, It's called "SecUpd2012-004.dmg"
    2) put my old Mail app in the Applications Folder, then
    3) opened the disk image and ran the updater.
If you have your old Mail.app file (and App Store file), it should work.

  • Mail won't open after yosemite update

I updated my macbook pro last night to the yosemite version 10.10.3 and my mail app won't open anymore and i get the following message:
"The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?".
I followed the advice on similar post about using disk utility, restoring using time machine, removing the mail file from the library and copying it to the desktop, but nothing works.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
