Mail Won't Open (but menus work and email still being received)

Hi there,
I am a leopard (10.5.1) user on a mac book pro 17. No major problems since install until the other day when mail refuses to open up (from dock or via applications). I can access all the menus, see the mail count in the dock and even open a new mail from the menu bar from there but just can't see what my inbox is doing as it won't open up in a screen. It bounces but just won't open up.
Email is clearly working as its receiving and i can see these if i access via library files.
Has any one heard of this problem? Have checked the forum and can't see the exact problem there. Do i need to re-install mail? If so, how?
Many thanks,
Ben

thanks very much pascal - appreciate the help.
i think i'll have to do a custom install from disk. is there anything i need to do/be aware of with the mail folder before i do the install? should i leave it in homefolder/library (once i've backed it up that is)?
will the new mail app just `talk` to the old mail folder once installed?
just want to avoid any probs and getting myself into further tangles once i do this.
thanks very much,
ben

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu and shut it down from there. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can, and then use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • My camra shutter won't open but it works for FaceTime

Why won't my camra work? It works for FaceTime and that's it

The front and the rear camera are two different things. One can work and not the other. It is not unusual, it happened to my daughter's phone. Try a reset on the phone, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo. If that doesn't help, you can try a restore, first from a backup and if no help, then as a new phone. If no joy, then make an appointment with the Apple store.

  • Mail Won't Open, But it's NOT "not responding"

This is the strangest thing I have seen.
Ok, let me start from the beginning -
A few days ago, my hard drive was starting to fail. Time Machine wasn't backing up from before that, even though it was set to run every day.
Last backup was done on 30 July.
So, When I saw the drive starting to fail, I manually backed up my mail so that none of it was lost.
The Apple guys replaced the HD yesterday. I started system restore at the last backup date on time machine, using Migration Manager. Everything seems to be there. I'm happy.
So before I open mail, I go and replace the files in Library > Mail >V2 with the files that I backed up.
I also replaced the com.apple.mail.plist in preferences file.
I try to open mail, it bounces a few time, put the little spotlight under the icon, but nothing happens. I left it for a few hours to see if it was maybe busy with something in the backend, but nada.
If I go to Apple > Force Quit, it pops up, but it does NOT say "not responding" next to it.
I have opened activity monitor, and it says 0,0 under CPU % - so to my mind that means nothing is happening.

    Any ideas?
I don't want to mess with this and break it more
    Thanks!

Have you tried opening Mail from the Applications folder. The Dock alias may be corrupt.
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Suddenly I can't access photos on my iPod touch- opens a blank page and then closes- email- opens a blank page and then closes- the camera- opens but wont work and then closes. Facebook works ok though. Any ideas?

My iPod touch has stopped working in selective areas. The camera turns on, I can see the image but the buttons don't work. The camera then closes.
When I try to access photos, I get a blank page which then closes. The same is true when I try to access mail. Facebook and my music works fine though. Ideas?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • SAFARI WON'T OPEN [ but firefox works fine ]

not sure what could be causing this...i tried what some other posts on the same issue suggested, ie opened safari in an another account [ it opened ] also tried getting rid of possible corrupted cookies ... no help at all ,,, does anybody have any ideas? could this be some problem with a software update i did [ i am wondering if downloading updates that are really for the new macs will screw up the older macs like mine ]

Since the problem doesn't appear to be associated with iTunes, you'll probably get quicker responses if you ask in the Safari forum.

  • Safari 5.1.2 won't open in lion and mail opens but can't get email

I turned on my computer the otherday and I couldn't get safari to open. When I click on it it just bounces in the dock for hours. I tryed to do a software update, which included updating safari, but my computer got stuck in the installing screen and after a full night I eventually had to hold the power button. Also my mail is opening but can't recieve emails and the only way to close it is by force quitting it. I ran Onyx and was able to get safari and mail working and was also able to install the update, but about an hour later it started doing the same thing. Any help?

Since this is a forum for the MacBook Pro hardware, you should go to the Safari and Lion forums.  Do a search and/or ask a question.  Hope this helps.

  • Mail won't open and it won't let my computer shut down

mail won't open, the little light by the icon in the dock won't go away, it won't quit, and it won't let my mac shut down even if i let the battery die, it just goes to sleep until you plug it in. Someone please help me!!

Launch Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities folder), find the Mail process, and force quit it from there. If this is NOT an admin-privileged account, then log out, log back in to an admin-privileged account, run Disk Utility Verify Disk. IF problems are reported, reboot from installer DVD and run Disk Utility Repair Disk from the installer DVD. Launch it from Utilities menubar item once the menubar is visible. If you are now running booted off the installer DVD, when repair disk is complete reboot normally and log back in to admin account and download 10.6.2 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 and reapply it. Then run software update from the  menubar item. Let us know if that works or not.

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been  running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.

  • So just the document I was last working on in pages won't open. I can't email it either it just sits preparing the document no matter what format I try. I can copy it, but the copies don't open either.

So just the document I was last working on in pages won't open. I can't email it either it just sits preparing the document no matter what format I try. I can copy it, but the copies don't open either. I tried deleting documents in pages as well as the app and reinstalling it, but nothing has helped.

Try quitting Pages and then reset your iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

My mail won't open or close and I can't shut down my Mac

    Same here.
Can't be. This forum covers pre-2006 iMacs; MacBook Pros have a completely different architecture and therefore different issues. For Mail problems, the best place to post is in the forum for your OSX version from the list here:
    Mac OS & System Software
BTW, my wife and I both use Apple mail and have not had any issues from about OSX 10.6 on. Admittedly, when Mail was introduced with OSX thirteen years ago, it had some real problems, but they seem to have been fixed.

My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

when I open logic express 8 with eyetv open but not active and i close logic express 8 and make eyetv active eyetv won't show closed captioning even though closed captioning is turned on.  When I totally close eyetv and reopen eyetv and open a live tv window the closed captioning comes back.  I never noticed this with os leopard, Just after i installed os snow leopard.  All software is up to date only I think, thanks to apple they droped support for logic express.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Does toggling CC off & back on bring it back?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
