Mail won't open from the dock

Hi. Since upgrading to Mavericks Mail and Safari wont open from the dock. Even if the apps are open. I have to right click and select "New viewer window"
The net result is I end up with several open windows, but even if I click "bring all to front" nothing happens.

Hi, I tried that before, did not work.
Found this on another page. Problem solved.
Great news, in that case this is user a specific issue which we should be able to resolve by moving one plist.
*Note read the instructions carefully and ask quesitons if you don't understand something.
First > Create a folder on your desktop so we can backup the plist that we removing that was it can be put back if anything...  Call it Dock Plist
Second > Open a Finder windows > up on the menu bar click on "Go" > Hold the option key on your keyboard and you should see Library come up click on it... This will place you inside your user specific Library folder aka ~/Library...
Third > Go into Preferences folder > locate a file called com.apple.dock.plist and drap/drop into the folder you created on the desktop
Fourth > Click on the Apple (top left) > Logout...  Log back and test it.  The system automatically creates a new com.apple.dock.plist with no settings so your dock will go back to default, test mail and see if that resolves the issue.

Hi, my mail won't open from my dock on my mac and it won't quit so I can't restart. Anyone help?

    Hello ward886,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like Mail is unresponsive, and you are unable to access it or restart your system.  In a situation like this, I recommend force quitting Mail and restarting your computer.
Use one of the following methods to force Mail to quit:
Using the Force Quit feature of OS X makes an application close, even when it is not responsive.
Important: Normally you should not need to force quit an app to close it. When an app is forced to quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved, so try these methods to normally close the app first:
Choose Quit from the app menu. For example, in Safari, choose Safari > Quit Safari.
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Control and Option keys on your keyboard, and click the icon of the unresponsive app in the Dock. Select Force Quit from the menu that appears.
Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder or the Spotlight menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Activity monitor window. Choose Quit Process from the View menu, or click the Force Quit button in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window.
If you cannot switch from the unresponsive app, press Command-Option-Shift-Esc for three seconds to force it to quit. This key combination tells OS X to force quit the frontmost app.

  • Within minutes of reboot, apps won't open from the dock, Applications folder or Launchpad.  Already running apps appear unaffected.  What should I do?

I installed Lion on my late-2009 Mac Mini a few weeks ago.  Within the last week, a strange problem has cropped up.  Just a few minutes after reboot, my Mac Mini stops opening applications.  I can try to open applications from the dock, or the Applications folder, or  Launchpad, and nothing opens.  Applications that have already been opened appear to be unaffected, as long as I don't close them.  If I quit an application, I cannot re-open it.
This does not appear to be related to any updates or changes.  The problem began while my Mac Mini was on 10.7.1, and persisted after an upgrade to 10.7.2.

Hello, how exactly did you move these other files, & what were they?
Open the Applications folder, does iMovie & iPhoto work from there?

  • HT5361 mail won't open from my dock

I click on the mail icon in my dock and nothing happens. It wont open.
    What could be the problem?
    Thanks

Drag the Mail icon out of the Dock by clicking and holding with the command key held down until you get a cloud. It might be a couple of inches. Then go to Applications/Mail and drag to the Dock. This should reset the link.

  • Mail won't open from the start

I tried to open Mail after doing updates as prompted. My PowerBook seems to respond but nothing happens. Can someone please tell me how to resolve this? Below is the Console log.

Actually, it's not just Mail that isn't working, but the Finder is crashing as well, and there may also be other problems that I don't fully understand. If you can manage to use the computer at all, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the latest system update using the Combo installer:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for PPC
Read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:

Basically, you should verify/repair the boot volume before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

Thanks Paul; but, taking your suggestion didn't solve the problem.  As mail is part of the OS, the updates don't have the capacity to reinstall applications; so, I had to reinstall the OS.  I now have my mail back (although it didn't appear on the dock--I had to go to applications and activate it and then put it back in the dock.  Thanks again for trying.

    Hi stork38,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
It sounds like the application is having an issue burning the CD.
I would suggest you Force Quit iTunes, eject the disc and then open iTunes again.
Then try burning again with a different CD.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 doesn't respond after opening from the dock

i am running 10.6.7 on an imac purchased last fall. the iphoto has been a pain most of that time. it will open if i am importing photos from a digital camera (where inserting the memory card into the computer prompts iPhoto to open) but will never work when opened from the dock. the iphoto screen pops up and then I get the spinning wheel icon, and when I open the "force quit applications" utility, it tells me iPhoto is not responding and I have to force quit. are there any other answers out there besides "repair disk permissions"? that has not worked. thanks!

    Another test:
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    Regards

  • Why won't my applications open from the dock?

I have my frequently used applications on my dock. Recently, when I click on an application to open, or try to open an application, it bounces once on the dock and then does not open. At times, it even "hides" in the dock. This does not occur for itunes, safari, dashboard, photobooth, or the finder; only things like word, excel, my digital camera download application, etc.
    Help!

Yes, I've tried that, and then when I click on it to open, it bounces once and then disappears from the dock. Darn it! Any suggestions?

  • I have a I-MAC and have used firefox, but lately it will not open from the dock, any suggestions?

As stated above, have used Firefox from the dock for quite a long time, but recently it did not do anything when I clicked on it, just sat there. Have been able to get to it using spotlight, but even then have to go thru extra steps and go thru a step that says something like "this application was downloaded from the internet. Do you want to open it? YES/ NO " Any ideas ? Should I dump it and reinstall, and if so , how would I uninstall?

In addition to this problem the dock has dissappeared so there isn't quick access to applications without having to go through Launch Pad or Applications folder in Finder, (Dock is hidden but is not present when scrolling over), and Apple have turned the power button into a sleep button?! Having these issues has meant I have been restarting the computer a lot and scrolling up to the Apple Menu to hit restart is frankly annoying! If I wanted my computer to sleep I would close it down or use Hot Corners.
    Dissappointment levels 10+.

I have since sorted this issue by doing a clean install and copying files across. The way I worked it out was by creating a guest account and logging into my iCloud account from that. If Mail loads in your guest account then the problem probably lies within your 'V2' Folder (Library > Mail > V2), after relocating V2 to my desktop and reloading Mail it loaded fine, however I lost all my folders and mail within... Hope this helps! It's not a fix but you will have access to Mail again!

  • Mail won't open with the windows

I noticed this started happening after I installed a program called growl. I installed this app and every since then my mail app opens but I don't get a window with it. I have to manually go to the menu and select file new mail windows. Also after I am done mail won't quit. I tried cmdQ but nothing, quit from the file menu, nothing works i have to force quit. it just isn't responding normally. Now i went through and uninstalled growl and all of its files that it created and also the gowl plug-in for mail that i installed also. I tried repairing disk permissions, running the 10.4.4 combo update again and still nothing. I removed the mail preference file and still I get nothing. When i trashed the preference file I lost all my mailboxes and accounts nd now I got some generic icons for trash junk and outbox. They are just folders and thats it.I was thinking about removing the mail folder from my library all tigether but then I would have to set mail up all over again. Please any help would be appreciated. thanx in advance.

Any chance of describing exactly how you did it. I have exactly the same symptoms having tried to load the plugin that enables you to retrieve hotmail (I know I know, why bother).
    Thanks very much!

  • My dashboard won't open from my dock, or applications folder. I've tried previous solutions posted on here but have had no luck. I'm running 10.6.8. Any suggestions?

I've poured over these boards in hopes to finding a solution as to why my dashboard won't open. It literally stopped working mid day, one day when I went to return to get a number off of my sticky note in my dashboard. I have tried posting the different lists from my preferences page, however, am unable to get the docments to actually drag to my desktop. I'm not sure if there are any other solutions, but was hoping to find a quick fix as opposed to traveling 2 hours to the nearest genius bar. Any help would be awesome!!

  • Firefox won't open from the taskbar or desktop - what do I do

Firefox won't open. I uninstalled it and downloaded a new one. When I tried running it I was asked to close Firefox. As I did not have it running, I could't close it. All other programmes were closed. I also have the mozilla email which is still working.

    Hello Gigi,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the iTunes app after upgrading to iOS 7.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPhone:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close

If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the iTunes app, I recommend restarting your phone and then resetting if it's still not working:
    Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPhone:

  • After Maverick install Mail won't open all the way

MacBook Pro laptop had troubles upgrading to Maverick.  Kept saying no updates available.  Took to Genius Bar and they got it to accept Maverick so now I'm running 10.9.5  issue I have is with mail.  It says the application Mail is open in finder and the top tool bar also says Mail is open.  But the actual window with my email accounts and subfolders will not open.  On the top top Mail bar I can not select any of the File options.  So basically I can not access any of my mail on my laptop. What can I do?

    Hey Eustace,
Ok the funny thing is I can not see that window at all, it never opens up.  Here is what I get.So I only can see the mail application open in the very top main tool bar and when I select File drop down list or Edit drop down list, I'm limited on what I can select as shown above.  Additional weirdness is I have another user on my computer and his mail window will open.  Does the above make sense?  I feel like its just some easy switch I'm overlooking but can't figure it out to save my insanity.
As seen here I can not change the status of my accounts easily.
