Mail won't open - please help me if you can I'm feeling down .... and I do

Hello everyone - never used this before so I don't know quite where it will arrive - BUT, HELP - my Mail program just will not load - I press the icon in the sidebar and it just hops and that's it! I hold the menue open and click 'open' and the same, just one frustrating hop. I did notice yesterday something odd - some mail in had one subject, and then when I opened it, it was the content from another sender. Have updated to 10.4.8 in the last week. My summary comment as simply 'aaaaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!!!' - and I have so much in various mailboxes which I need to access on a regular basis.
Any ideas for a new boy who is somewhat challenged tech-wise????
Thanks
DavidI

Hello DavidI.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows to try to identify the problem:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/, and try to open Mail by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.
In the meanwhile, take a look at the following article, in case this is a font issue:

  • Static files within a ear file     - help me if you can I am feeling down

    I am using oc4j.
I have some static files (templates and configuration files for the applications) in an ear file.
These files are addressed via web.xml init param and I use relative path.
This works in my "working directory".
But when I deploy the ear file the servlet cannot access the file (io exception file test/templates/temp.txt not found).
Has anybody an idea how I must address the files in the web.xml?
How can I address the files from /test level?
Or is somthing wrong with the structur of the directory?
    my "working dirctory"

If these files are only accessed from the web module, then put these files in a subdirectory of the "WEB-INF" directory of the war file.

  • Lightroom 5 Catalog Won't Open - PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
So, my most important lightrooom catalog won't open and I don't know what to do. Screenshot below. I guess it didn't shut down before I ejected my hard drive.

Look in the backups folder, there should be several folders that are dated, look in the latest date and open that catalog, depending how much time was between the last back up and your last work, will determine how much work you lost.
What I recommend (hind site here) is once you get your catalog open is save a catalog first in a location easy to get to, normally where your old corrupted catalog was. then select all images then save. (ctrl/cmd-s) This will write the metadata to your files on the drive or side car files(depending how you set it up and if they are raw or jpg. ) Then you will have this for a backup, as you will know that all edits you have done are in the metadata, therefore you can create a new catalog and import all files to get back to where you were.
That said, use this method as a last case scenario, normally using a back up catalog would be good enough. However, if something happened to that main folder, like corrupted segments on the drive, you would have your images to fall back on, or at least those you can access.
But if your backing up to an external drive, you should be alright anyway.
I tend to go over board with backing up since I had a drive that crash a few years ago.

  • MAIL WON'T OPEN..HELP!

    Hello,
I am running 10.5.1 Leopard on a brand new MPro and for some unknown reason Mail will not open anymore. The menu will come up but the rest of the app won't load. Then it won't quit and I have to force quit to close it.
So I did a search on here and here's what I did:
I reinstalled the mail.app from the leopard CD - didn't work
    I moved the mail.plist - didn't work
    I removed spam sieve - didn't work
    Repaired permissions - didn't work
I made sure the junk filter was off - didn't work
Then finally I did a complete archive and install and it still won't work!
I need my mail desparately for work because its my memory, without it I'm lost.
    Any ideas?
    Pete

    Dear Katherine,
I too have exactly the same problem in Mail 3.1(914/915). I haven’t fixed the underlying issue of the mail application exiting, but I can now make it stay open enough to read the mail folders that are stored locally on my machine. Basically I had to disable my mail account. It needs a bit of very quick typing! You have to do these steps whilst mail is open, before it crashes. It took me several goes to be dextrous enough with the mouse, but I got there in the end.
    Start Mail.
In the main menu, Click Mail>Preferences. The Preferences window opens.
Click the “Advanced” button (the rightmost one of the three.)
Untick the first box that is labelled “Enable this account”.
Press the red traffic-light “close window” button.
Click “Save”. The “save changes” window retreats.
If you get that far before it crashes, you’ve won
Even if mail crashes now, you should be able to open it again and this time it will stay open. You can browse your messages stored “On my mac” at will.
The above does not fix the basic problem though.
In case it is of any use to anyone, what follows are a few pieces of information that I found when investigating.
I also tried (first archiving!) and then deleting the biggest of my “On my Mac” mail folders – in case absolute size was becoming a problem. It didn’t help.
My email worked yesterday, but not today, so I went on Webmail and read all my new emails. I then deleted (and purged) all those new emails on webmail. Back in mail, it was no better. (I don’t know what is different now though…)
I opened the Activity window. (Mail>Window>Activity).
Three things seem to happen in parallel.
    “Copying messages”
    “Adding messages”
    “Traversing mail hierarchy”
    around the time it crashes.
I have seen “copying a message” complete apparently successfully.
My reasoning says “be suspicious of “traversing mail hierarchy” but just watching the progress bars and seeing it crash again and again I have a gut feeling that it’s the “adding messages” (whatever that means!) that is the problem. I have no hard evidence for this though.
This all seems a rather serious problem. Hallelujah for webmail.
Apple, We need a fix soon please!

  • Itunes 10 Installs but won't open - Please Help

I had Itunes 10 installed working on my computer. I installed a program which also installed an older version of Quicktime which I think was version 6.5. The next time I tried to open Itunes it said I needed verion 7.5 of Quicktime to open Itunes please reinstall Itunes. Now comes the problem. I have installed and uninstalled Itunes about 10 times, everytime it install ok but does not open when I click on the icon. The itunes.exe file opens in task manager for a few seconds then closes. I have searched a few places for solutions with no avail. I have tried the correct order of removing apple programs and deleting temp folder and internet cache. I have tries msconfig but can't find any of the programs which have affected other users. I have tried creati9ng another user account for windows but Itunes still won't open. Can anyone please help. My computer is Windows 7 32 bit. Thank in advance.

No, the program I installed was Winavi MP4 which coverts video to ipod psp format etc.
Ack, that one's just as bad. It's been causing this sort of grief for iTunes users for over five years now.
What it has probably done here is drop old versions of QuickTime componentry in unorthodox locations on the PC (usually down in your operating system files). So we're going to go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Open.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

I recently updated the software on my iPhone 5 and now I can't open my iTunes Store and e keypad seems really slow in responding. I have turn my phone in and off but it hasn't solved the issue. Can someone please help!

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.

  • Itunes won't open please help!!!!!!

Please help me I installed my itunes and quicktime, but the itunes wont open. I tried redownloading itunes and I even tried to install an older version of quicktime. It opened than but wouldn't work said that I needed to have the updated version. So I reinstalled the updated versions. And again it just gives me the hour glass symbol than nothing. I do not have norton and no other programs will interfer with it. Can someone please help me?

    Hey jimmymohawk,
What is the exact error message? Is it saying that Quicktime needs to updated?
This article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 should help you get iTunes installed sucessfully. Quicktime will have to be uninstalled, you may have to use the part of the article "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer," then iTunes can be repaired or reinstalled.

  • Getting strange messages and Logic won't open PLEASE HELP!

I haven't opened Logic for a few weeks because I have been out of town.
I just tried to open a project and got the message "logic pro has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party midi or audio drivers" and an empty project pops up with lines through all the plug-ins, etc...
When I try to simply just open Logic (NOT a project) Logic simply does not open and just sits there. (The little Logic opening window stalls on the "Searching for Audio Unit Plug-ins (Apple:AUbandpass)...)
    What could be causing this?
The only thing I have done recently on my computer that is a little out of the ordinary is drag the "Preferences" folder (User/Library/Preferences) to my desktop to try and fix another issue I was having on my computer, BUT I QUICKLY UNDID this action (with the undo function) before continuing. Could this have anything to do with my current problem? I have project I NEED to open now and I can't figure this out. PLEASE HELP!
Message was edited by: Jack Q

    UPDATE:
I was able to get Logic to finally open (sort of), BUT:
When I go to the Audio Units Manager it shows ALL the audio units as crashed, or "crashed validation" under the compatibility heading.
All the boxes are unchecked on the left. When I try to check any of them, it says in the grey window that pops up, for example:
"validating Audio Unit AUAudioFilePlayer by Apple:
    validation result: crashed validation
updating properties of AU AUAudioFilePlayer by Apple...done."
THEN a window pops up stating: "The application Logic Pro has quit Unexpectedly" and this happens every time I try this.
Also, every time I start Logic I get the same "The application Logic Pro has quit Unexpectedly" pop-up window, along with a Logic pop-up dialogue that reads: "You are using incompatible Audio Units. Dear Logic Pro user,
you have 1 Audio Unit(s) enabled which did not pass the Apple AU validation. This may cause problems and can even crash Logic Pro or lead to data loss! Please check with the manufacturer(s) for updated versions. We recommend disabling these plug-ins in the AU Manager." with the buttons: Start AUmanager or Ignore.
AND, even more odd, regardless of what button I choose Logic continues to open to the arrange window.
Is there anything I can try next? I am going insane over this...

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Need help opening Photoshop Elements 11; downloaded, but won't open, please help?

I recently purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 an downloaded it, but it will not open.  I receive a message that states that I need to 'uninstall' and then to 'reinstall'.  How do I do this and where is the software available again to reinstall?
    Thank you for your help!

If you are using a PC, then you use the Control Panel interface to uninstall most any software.  To reinstall, you should be able to download it from Adobe's site.  If you cannot find a link to download it via your account (log in and see) then you could also download and install the trial version and use your serial number from the purchase to activate it.

  • LR2 won't open- please help

Everytime I try to open Lightroom, I'm asked for my serial number, I input it correctly (green checkmark and all) and then the program closes.
    HELP!
Normally, I open LR from my catalog on an external hard drive. When that didn't work, I tried just opening the application itself.  Still doesn't work.
I did this as recommended: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404835.html but it also didn't work (this only led to my being asked to register my license again). I've restarted the computer to no avail.
I don't know what else to do.  Has anyone experienced something similar?
    Many thanks

Quite likely, your registration file is corrupt.
Whether you're on a PC or a Mac, this is where they are.

    Re: Lightroom 2.5 startup Vista
For Vista, it's the file located at:
    C:\Users\[Username]f\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Lightroom 2.0 Registration.lrreg
that's probably corrupt. You can delete it and a new one will be created, and then your registration should stick.
For the registration problem on Macs, the file is on this path:
    Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Lightroom 2 Registration file.
    Good luck!
