Mail won't see OE/OS9 identities

Getting ready to move my father-in-law from OS9 to Panther. In OS9, Outlook Express had two identities, "Main Identity" and his. Since Main didn't contain any information and OE kept switching to it when I opened it, I deleted it. In 9, OE now opens his identity just fine.
In Panther (3.9), when attempting to import everything from OE, it opens Classic, opens OE, I click through to get ready to import, and...I get "Main Identity", but not his identity.
wah?
This is maddening, to say the least.

This is because Mail has not had a chance to build the proper index for the copied folders. Either use the Rebuild command on each separate mailbox, or there is another more global approach.
Also if you had copied both the com.apple.mail.plist from Home/Library/Preferences, and the Mail folder, then you would not have had to set the accounts up again. This is about the only sure way to Import account folders, although Import will work with other, On My Mac mailboxes.
More info, please, about exactly what you have done.

  • Apple Mail won't see changes in contacts

I have an Exchange account configured in my MacBook Pro (Mail, iCal and AddressBook). Normally the computer don't shutdown only sleep, and the Mail and AddressBook programas are allways running.
When I add a new contact or edit the email address of any other already registered, Mail won't show the new information until I Quit the application and start it again.
How can I do to Mail see any changes in AddressBook without close and relaunch the application?

993 is the wrong port, choose 'Use Default Ports" as shown below

  • Mail won't 'see' my existing messages

I have trouble with this everytime I have to migrate Mail data.
My iMac's HD failed last week, and the external used for TimeMachine failed just days earlier - ugh!
I have copied all Mail data into the Mail folder, and went through setup (allowed Mail to create my accounts again), but it will not 'see' any of my existing copied messages.
It even sees all the individual folders I have created over time for archiving emails, but nothing is in them.
I checked the Mail folder, and can successfully QuickLook all messages I've spot-tried, so the files appear OK.
How does one get Mail to 'accept' existing messages copied into it? The data was from Mail on the other HD too.

This is because Mail has not had a chance to build the proper index for the copied folders. Either use the Rebuild command on each separate mailbox, or there is another more global approach.

  • Mail won't see iPhoto Library folders

When trying to send an attachement in Mail:
    1) Click on "Attach" paperclip icon.
    2) Click on "Pictures" frame icon.
    3) Click on "iPhoto Library" icon.
    4) "iPhoto" icon appears, but clicking on it does not make sub-folders appear in the next column.
How do I get to a specific folder or photo stored in my iPhoto Library using the "attach" icon in Mail?

Easiest way to email iPhoto Library photos is:
    Open iPhoto app
Select photo(s) you want to send
Select "Share" at top of window
    Select "Email"
If you want photos to be icons, right click photo in email window and select icon. You should try to keep the email under 5 MB. If it is larger, use the selections for size in the bottom border of the email.

  • Mail won't recognize my database anymore, yet I see the library is intact

While installing a particular program the install crashed. Since then, mail wants to set me up from scratch like it's the first time running/ opening mail. I see that my user/library/mail database looks all in tact. I can see my accounts in there and lots of mailboxes I've already set up. Seems that the link has to be re-established. I do not want to go through the mail helper installer which would reset the database I think and might erase all my important emails. How do I just run mail and make it see my account and all it's attributes again. ? HELP

Under some circumstances (e.g. lack of available disk space, filesystem corruption, repeated crashes), Mail may discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings are lost. The messages themselves aren’t gone, and messages stored in custom “On My Mac” mailboxes remain accessible, but any messages stored in account mailboxes become inaccessible until you set up the accounts again.
What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder (e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down), just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This folder is where all your mail is stored.
There are at least three ways to restore the account settings other than using .Mac syncing:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure some of the Mail > Preferences settings. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

Mail won't come in unless restart "mail" each time.  IMAP cox trying to setup new email addresses....connection doctor shows mail checked and 'light' is green but mail will not display until restarting.  I know there is a simple solution, just can't see what it is! Can anyone help? I tend to make things more difficult than I need to!

  • Can I/should I use Mail on my MacBookPro or do I just use iCloud mail?  My Mail won't even open like it used to...Tool bar shows up top but nothing else on screen!

Hi.  I've recently been given a pc tablet to enable me to always be connected to my boss since some of what we do is only pc compatible.  He's a big Outlook lover and intended to use Windows through Paralles to have all this on my Mac.
After my Mac died and I had to buy a new one, I'm a little leary of doing so and thus investigated the Mail program again.  I am confused about it at this point and would love it if anyone could answer some questions i have.
    1.  If I have an icloud account which I currently use for my .me mail, can I even use Mail anymore?
    2.  My Mail program hasn't been the same since i upgraded to Lion - which is when I started my iCloud account.
When I open the program all I see is the toolbar - no actual mail or screen even!
    3.  Can Mail be set up like Outlook in that I could have all of the email accounts I must manage for work (mostly gmail accounts) feeding into one location?
Sorry if this all sounds silly!  I really never had a use for Mail when it worked, other than for my personal emailing so I'm afraid I never really learned enough about it!
    Thank you,
    Christine

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • "Mail" won't show my Yahoo mails...

    Hello,
I'm using three boxes, all Yahoo. Had a minor problem with one of them and the Yahoo people told me they had switched the account to another server to solve the problem (which was actually solved).
But since then, "Mail" won't show the incoming mail. The activity indicator shows "x" mails having been collected but they don't show either on he screen or next to the account name...
One exception: as I tried to cancel then re-create the faulty account, it does collect messages the first time it opens...but then afterwards nothing shows although mails are showed to have been collected.
The other two boxes I use with Yahoo are collected without any problem.
    Yahoo can't or won't help...
Anybody with an idea ??? Could the problem be linked with changing the server ? But then how is it hat mails are shown to have been collected by he activity counter even if they don't appear on he screen or next to he account name ?
Many thanks and greetings from southern France.

no one knew why i couldn't get my messages from the pop server at att/yahoo into my mail on my mac. there were no answered questions to the support topic why can i see mail activity....messages on the server, but not coming into the mail box? sending is fine, but for some reason, it suddenly stopped 3 days ago and for 3 days i searched for a fix. the only way i found this was a mail access error on the web mail thru att.yahoo where my messages showed up (they were also showing up on the i phone, not the mac)...had to verify the email....and while waiting, i found the att yahoo help page that cleared the whole problem
not removing files and putting them back in while opening and shutting mac....all the ports and ssls were checked and correct
apparently you have to clean your cache
    totally all att's fault
Web Mail - How do I clear my browser's cache?
It's true, a clogged cache can slow down and even stop your browser. Who wants that? Not us. Let's get to work clearing your cache. Which browser are you using? Instructions are included below for each of these:
Firefox 2.x for Windows or Mac
    1. For Windows or Mac, click Tools and select Clear Private Data.
    2. In the window that opens, select whichever items you'd like to clear. When you're done, click Clear Private Data Now.
    Safari 3 for Mac
    1. In the Safari menu, click Empty Cache. That's it!
    2. To also clear the History, click the History menu and click Clear History (at the bottom).

  • Mail won't open, how do I fix it?

My mail won't open, the error message says I may need to reinstall the application and also check for updates.  Everything is up to date and how do you reinstall mail?

You would have to reinstall the OS using the Recovery Volume.
    Try running the combo update.
    10.8.5 Combo Update
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • .Mail won't send attachments

Since upgrading to OS X 10.7, Mail usually won't send attachments. It does not matter if the attachment is small (~300kb) or larger (~3MB). Mail will try to send it (and if you watch the progress bar in the lower right corner of Mail, you can see that it starts uploading the message), but then it stops. Then I get the message: "Cannot send message using the server..." Occsaionally, attachments will work, but I haven't been able to determine why. This is the case for both my desktop (10.7.2) and my laptop (10.7.3).
The e-mail affected is a g-mail account configured through IMAP. I have verified that I have internet connectivity while experiencing this problem and I can even send other e-mails w/o file attachments. I opened the Connection Doctor and everything logs in/out correctly. The details from Connection Doctor are below.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I am going to try removing the account from mail and then setting it up again to see if it solves the issue.

  • Mail won't shut down

I have to Force Quit Mail when shutting down.  Is there a fix for this?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail doesn't "see" contacts. How to Fix?

Some time ago, I pulled my Address book contacts into Maverick's Contacts, and this was successful; they're all there, categories, notes, comments..
However, Mail.app doesn't draw from any source when I begin to compose an email to people whose addresses should be in there..it Mail's little address book.
How can I restore that in Mail?
    Thank you!

From the Mail menu bar, select
              Mail ▹ Preferences... ▹ Composing
    and check the box marked
              Automatically complete addresses
You don't have to configure LDAP. If the box is already checked, or if checking it has no effect, then continue as below.

  • MobileMe mail won't turn on

I have a MobileMe account set up to sync calendars and contacts, but email is usually turned off. Now mail won't turn on. It claims to set it up, but when I go to mail there are no accounts, in settings mail syncing as turned off again. Ive tried restarting the iPad and now the mail preferences are stuck on 'accounts are currently syncing' so I can't even delete the account to set it up again.

See if resetting the iPad will either solve the problem or allow you to delete the account so that you can recreate the account.
Reset iPad:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
