Mail won't set up IMAP account

Hello,
When setting up my Gmail account, I don't have the option to set it up manually as an IMAP account. After I enter my name, email and password in the first dialogue box, I click "continue" and it automatically sets it up as a POP account. I understand there's supposed to be a "automatically set up this account" checkbox but I'm not seeing one (there's only a "continue" button). I've already enabled IMAP on my Gmail account settings. I also trashed the Mail prefs file (com.apple.mail) and restarted my computer. No success.
I'd very much appreciate any advice, tips, etc.. Thanks very much in advance.

Candice,
Welcome to the Discussions.
In my experience you should have the opportunity to change the POP type setting to IMAP, but haven't tried the Gmail lately. However, if you hold down the Option key while clicking on the + sign to add an account, you will go into manual mode.

  • Mail crashes when connecting to IMAP accounts

    Hi all,
I have mail set up to check 5 different accounts. One is a POP account and 4 are IMAP accounts (2 gmail, 2 other mail providers).
Initially I had no problems at all with this setup. Mail had mirrored all 4 IMAP accounts and was downloading new messages without a problem. One day, however, something went awry and every time I took one of my Gmail accounts online, Mail would crash. I figured I'd leave that account offline and keep checking that gmail account the regular way.
This worked for a while. More recently though Mail has started crashing when any of my IMAP accounts are taken online. If I leave the 4 IMAP accounts offline and only the POP account online, it does not crash.
Here is what I've tried so far:
    Repair permissions/disk.
Erase and Install Tiger (up to 10.4.11)
Moving .mbox files to the desktop and letting mail download the inboxes again (not ideal, the largest inbox is 800MB and a gmail one)
Removing the accounts and starting from scratch.
Nothing seemed to change a thing, Mail now crashes on startup if the IMAP accounts are online (if I take that Mailbox offline, Mail works fine).
I checked the crash reports (which I have been reporting to Apple like crazy, not that they seem to have noticed), and it always seems to be Thread 0 that crashes. Here are the last two crashed Thread 0s:

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have no idea whether this will help or if it's even what resolved my same recent imap problems that involved primarily *GMAIL imaps*, but it seems to be helping.
First, make sure all imap accounts are dragged up to the very top of the inbox/accounts list: *imaps above pops*
(Any IMAP accounts that have multiple folders should be at the top of the imaps).
Second, go into Mail > preference > accounts > [ each imap account ] > Advanced Tab
Above the box for the Port is *_IMAP Path Prefix_:* Type in INBOX
(reminder: If it's gmail, make sure your port is 993 and Use SSL is checked.)
Hope this helps. so far this is what seems to have helped w/mine (i have other problems such as zero results in my smart mailboxes--they no longer work).
I also have a different imap account not google/gmail and I don't use INBOX in the path prefix on that one and it has always worked just fine; the problems started with gmail imaps.
i'll be interested to know if it helps anyone else.
(Note: I manually synchronize the gmail IMAP accounts because having the auto synch box checked also seems to cause problems but your experience may vary)
    cheers!
now if anyone can tell me why after all these years apple has not fixed the lookupd / dns / network bugs that result in this (among other similar failures)

  • Mail 5.1 sets up sbcglobal account as IMAP

When I went to setup my sbcglobal.net account with Apple Mail 5.1 (OS 10.7.2 - mac mini 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) it insists that is is an IMAP account.
I typed in my email address - "[email protected]" and password and on the account settings that are returned are for an IMAP account - however this account is infact a POP3 account.  I'm able to send and receive mail with these settings - however I really want a POP account to make sure that when an email is deleted on my home computer it is not deleted from the server and I can still view it at work.
Anyone know why this happens? - never had the problem on older mail versions.  Is there anyway to override the settings for the account?

All you need to do is hold the option key down while you hit create or continue, and it will give you the choices you need to switch from IMAP to POP

  • A hint if you use multiple mail clients to check one IMAP account

    FYI:
Mail.app in leopard turns on an advanced "push" mail feature automatically, called IDLE. This can cause strange problems when you use multiple IMAP clients to access you IMAP server.
For instance, I have a computer in my office and one in my lab. Normally Mail.app is running on them both constantly. After installing Leopard I would sit in my office delete and move messages from my INBOX, and when I went down to the lab I would find those emails still in my INBOX and also in the mailboxes I had moved them to on my office machine. In very short order I ended up with multiple copies of emails in many places and no ability to actually delete mail.
Originally I thought this was a bug with Leopard Mail.app, or a problem with compatibility between Mail.app and the UW IMAP server that I use. I wasted significant time searching on the web for possible solutions.
It turns out that the IDLE feature (that is automatically turned on for you in Leopard) was the cause of my problems. Turning this feature off (in the Advanced pane of the accounts setting) on EACH machine caused me email to return to its previous functional state.
If you only use one IMAP mail client the IDLE feature is nice, it pushes new mail to you as soon as the IMAP server receives the new mail.
(note -- IDLE is also automatically turned on in Thunderbird)

Assuming you're on a NAT'd network, DNS services can cause all sorts of weird errors with the mail server, including spontaneous name changes.
To verify local DNS services, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless diagnostic message:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, might see a one-time informational message around the usage of sudo, then you'll see some host and network configuration information, and finally an indication that either no changes are required, or that there are local DNS or the network has configuration issues.  Also, make sure you're not using .local or .arpa as the top-level domain within the DNS services.
Public DNS for the mail server can also cause communications issues, if that's not configured correctly — that won't cause the issue you're seeing in the logs here, but it will cause inbound mail to not reach your server, and outbound mail from your server to be dropped by the remote server.  To verify your public DNS, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the commands discussed in this thread or this thread and confirm that your internal and external MX record and your internal and external forward and reverse DNS settings are all correct.

  • Can't set up IMAP account - set up fails to connec...

I downloaded Nokia Messaging today and I have a major problem. I set up two accounts successfully eventually -- whose idea was that 'easy' email set up anyway? The mechanism tries to guess the details and got it wrong with all the accounts I tried. Not terribly easy or efficient. Why not do it like everybody else eg mail2web?
The problem is there is no way to set up the third account. I enter email address and password, the web setup says it can't connect and gives up. I tried to trick it by entering ficticious details, then I was asked to enter more details (servers) but again it fails. It is a university account, using IMAP on port 143 and TLS. Any way to bypass the above routine and enter the full set of correct details? Or doesn't the app support TLS? (I only see SSL in the web setup)
Another issue: with one of the accounts I set up successfully, the From name on my handset is set to my email address instead of the actual name set on the web. When I change the name on the phone to match the name on the web Messaging responds with 'verification failed' and gives up!
Finally, I wish there was an option for 'send copy to myself', like with the native mailer.

After many attempts over more than a week, it created the account as [email protected] but when I try to change several settings on the handset (eg insert my name, which is currently blank) it fails to verify. More importantly, it won't let me change the From address, so I am stack with no name and the [email protected] address! The weird thing is that it does download messages, but every time it syncs it downloads another copy of every email -- I have three copies of each message under that account at the moment and I suspect I will get a lot more. Anyone solved this?
I really don't understand why it had to be made so difficult! The sad thing is that the designers will probably think this is more user-friendly And of course there is no support link. I emailed Nokia Support last week and they never replied.

  • Problem with marking mail as Not Junk in IMAP account

    Hi,
I have an IMAP email account on Go Daddy that I forward all my other mail accounts for processing. I use Apple Mail to process this IMAP account and use Mail.app's Junk filter to move Junk mail to the Junk mailbox. This Junk mailbox is mapped in Mail.app to my Go Daddy Bulk Mail IMAP folder, and the Trash and Inbox are also mapped to their respective folders of this IMAP account's Mail.app is set to "Enable junk mail filtering" and "Move it to the junk mailbox".
When junk mail comes in, Mail.app correctly identifies the mail as junk and moves it to the Junk folder. However, if I find a message that Mail.app misidentified as junk and I attempt to mark it as Not Junk, the message gets a Not Junk status (not brown anymore), but the message stays in the Junk folder; Mail.app does not move it back into the Inbox.
I would assume that since both the Inbox and Junk mail (Bulk Mail) folders are IMAP and on the same account, that upon marking the message as Not Junk, this mail should be moved back into the Inbox, just like under POP.
Am I mistaken about the operation of Junk mail under IMAP? Should marking a message as Not Junk move it automatically to the Inbox? Do I have my folders and options set right? Should I possibly use a 3rd party Spam filter such as SpamSieve (where I can control its actions via Applescript)?
    Thanks for any info.
    Mike

Ah Ernie, I think you found out my "problem".
Before I upgraded to SN, I used SpamSieve to manage my POP SPAM. When I changed to SN, I did away with SpamSieve and POP, and used IMAP and Mail.app's Junk filtering. SpamSieve, since its "Mark As Junk" and "Mark As Not Junk" functionality uses Applescript, it must've moved the Not Junk message back to the inbox.
Thanks for the pointer; I may change back to SpamSieve to get back that functionality.

  • Using Mail with both pop and imap accounts

I have a Q to better understand how the Mail app. works in Lion so there is better coordination among my devices and mail = I'd like to lay out how it is now set up and see whether or not I'm right about how to handle them - and how to do things better.
    1.  I have a .mac account and no problems with it = if I read and delete on iPhone it deletes off iPad and computer fine.
    2.  I have an email account that is an IMAP account but at another host [I use Mail to get email from it] - so what I think happens is that it's sort of the same thing but operating on that other host as an IMAP so that the same thing happens more or less - email comes in on all 3 devices and when I delete from one it deletes from others = but maybe not as fast because it's going thru the Mail intermediary.  My need/wish is to use one email program [Mail] to get all my mail and that's why this and others all go thru Mail.
    3.  I have a 3rd account that is a POP account and can't be made IMAP because of the nature of the plan/host - in that I've noticed that I'll have 100 messages on my main computer and delete 75 of them but the 100 are still left on the iPhone and iPad = so far I don't do much about it but I hope/assume I'm right to think that if I know I've read and dealt with the 100 messages that if I want to I can just delete them all quickly off the iPhone or iPad...I'm not sure how to handle a Pop account to minimize all the hassle.
Does this seem like the right way to go or is there a better way to manage these 3 diff. accounts ???  I noticed some of the problem when I checked Mail on my iPad and saw there were loads of old emails 'unread' on it that I had dealt with on my computer so I knew things were out of whack.
Last thought = I do go to Synchronize all Accounts from time to time but really don't notice it makes a difference but maybe I don't understand tht either.
    thanks much

Okay, it just fixed itself without me doing anything, or even quitting the program again. It still seems like a bug.

  • Windows 8 Mail App - Can't add IMAP account

Hi all, I have been playing with Win8 for a few weeks now and love it. My only concern is that I can't use the Mail App to connect to my hosted email accounts via IMAP, every time I add the settings it tells me:
We still can't find settings for
[email protected] Providing this additional info may help. If you don't know this information, search online or check with your provider.
I have exactly the same settings in Outlook on the same PC in desktop mode and it works fine, as well as connecting from all of my mobile devices. I can't even find where to look for additional info on the error.
I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Mail App.
I've tried manually adding the server settings to no avail.
I've confirmed my account supports IMAP and proven it is working in Outlook.
    Any thoughts please?

  • Need help setting up IMAP account

I have an IMAP account with JustHost. I'm confused about how to set it up on the iPhone so that deleted and sent messages are stored on the server in the same folder they would be stored in if I deleted or sent them from Mail.app. JustHost include this particular instruction for Mail.app:
+Mac Mail IMAP Note: The "IMAP Path Prefix" needs to be set to INBOX otherwise Mail.app will not be able to store deleted, draft or sent mail on the server. click for more info+
I did this in Mail and it seems to be working well. But do I also have to include this prefix in the settings for this account on the iPhone?
And do I need to "map" the Sent, Trash and Drafts mailboxes to particular folders in the Settings > Account > Advanced panel? Right now it's very confusing because on my Mac this is what I see:
See how there's still a "Sent" and "Trash" folder under BMA.com way down at the bottom? Why? Almost all of my sent and deleted messages from this account appear in the "Sent" and "Trash" folders at the top underneath the Sent and Trash icons.
On my iPhone I see something similar. At the top there's an Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash folder with the special icons for each; then underneath that there are "Deleted Messages", "Drafts" and "Sent" folders that just look like normal folders. However, the problem here is that most of my deleted and sent messages are actually in those folders, not the ones up top.
    Ach, so confused!
    Message was edited by: Badlydrawnboy

Sorry for delay in replying. I don't use the Mac Mail App so I had to check what happended if I connected it to my mail service. I also have two Sent and Trash folders. I would think that the top ones are on my MacBook and the other on my mail service provider's server. The advantage of having both is that I could access Sent and Deleted messages even if I didn't have an internet connection.
Try either manually mapping these folders on your iPhone settings or sync via iTunes and see if your messages appear in these folders as well. MobileMe will not sync mailbox settings on non-MobileMe mail accounts.

  • Mail won't default to correct account

Quickbooks has an option for creating statements for customers via email, sending the outgoing email draft to mail. After installing Yosemite, the outgoing mail won't default to my professional email address, instead defaulting to my iCloud email address. I have checked mail preferences, and set the preference for outgoing mail to be my professional email account but this did not help. I have made the iCloud account inactive, and that worked, but when I made the iCloud account active again I had the same problem. At the suggestion of an apple guy, I did a restart with Cmmd-Opt-R-P, but that did not help. Any idea about how to get mail to function correctly?

    Try using connection doctor utilities.

  • Sent Mail won't stay on IMAP server

I have Apple Mail set up as the default client for my IMAP account. All incoming email remains on the server, but sent mail goes directly to the local folders on my Macs but does not remain on the server. Email sent from Thunderbird remains on the server, which suggests that it is an Apple Mail issue.
Can someone offer a suggestion about how this might be addressed?
    Thanks much in advance.

When you have more than one account, there is a small black triangle beside the Sent Icon -- click it, and the separate Sent mailbox for each account will be revealed. Then employ the Use This Mailbox For command.

  • Mail extremely slow for an imap account after 10.5.2 combo

Mail became very slow for a non-.mac/non-gmail imap account after I installed 10.5.2 combo. The account works fine from other mail client such as Sea Monkey. It was working fine until 10.5.1. Any hint?

Using INBOX as the path prefix is NOT the "correct way"; the correct way is server dependent. This is further complicated by the fact that servers that fully support the IMAP Namespace extension actually have more than one "path prefix".
On my company's server, we have the concept of shared mailboxes and the company relies extensively on them. If a user sets the path prefix to INBOX, he can no longer see the shared mailboxes, since that prefix limits him only to his personal mailbox hierarchy. So he must leave the prefix as blank in order to see the shared mailboxes.
Unfortunately, 10.5.2 has decided that a) it shouldn't honor the setting of "Keep Notes & ToDo's" to "On My Mac" and b) that it knows better than the user what the path prefix should be, and c) it doesn't have a "don't ever ask me again" on that annoying dialog.
I have already filed a bug report on this issue.

  • Mail crashes when setting up new accounts

My boyfriend gave me a MacBook Pro for Xmas and I am now trying to migrate all my data from a PC. Whenever I try setting up mail accounts (both IMAP and POP), Mail crashes once it gets to setting up the outgoing mail server. I have checked with my ISP and the information entered is correct.
I have tried trashing all preference files and repaired permissions, but to no avail.
Also tried setting up the mail accounts with live help from my ISP's support. Still to no avail.
    What do I do?

which preference files did you trash? did you trash homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist? if have not set up any accounts then quit mail and try trashing this file. then start Mail and see if you can set up an account. if that does not help, create a new user account, log into it and try setting up Mail there.

I Have set all my details for my gmx and hotmail account but the mail page still says welcome to mail and does not show my accounts. However when I shut it down it tells me how many unread emails I have. Please help

I have also tried the fixes offered in this forum such as using the "Other" mail in setting up the gmail accounts, and not using the dedicated gmail setting.  I also went to google and signed in and enable the additional devices.  I had the same problems with the original account I set up for gmail, but it corrected when i went to using the "Other" instead of the Gmail button.  I was able to set up the new gmail accounts on my iphone without problem and on my husband's ipad1 for his gmail account.  Just the ipad 2 is giving me problems.   Again, thanks for any suggestions.

  • Mail won't stop checking some accounts

Anyone have this happen before? Mail won't stop checking a couple accounts I have. They are accounts we use every single day, run off our own server. They will check fine on other macs, but not this iMac starting a few hours ago. I have rebuilt the boxes, deleted all mail from the servers and updated to 10.5.4 just in case. Still the same thing.
I have to force quit, then once restarted it will grab new e-mails before it craps out and just sits there spinning on accounts again.
    Ideas? Thx.

I'm experiencing the same issue with one of my POP accounts as well.
I've tried the "Rebuild" command in the Mailbox menu as well as rebuilding the Apple Mail Envelope Index, but it's still attempting to sync.
Has anyone found a resolution to this issue?
