Mail won't shut down
I have to Force Quit Mail when shutting down. Is there a fix for this?
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Rules panel won't close after deleting one rule; Mail won't shut down except by Force Quit
And when I Force Quit, the rule I wished to delete remains on the list.
As a temporary work around, create a new rule to 'Stop Evaluating Rules' and then drag the one you are trying to get rid of below it in the list. This should stop the rule from being used.

HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
Thank you everyone!!I have this question too.

Mirror Door G4 won't shut down...
Hi!
Yep, won't shut down! Well, here it is:
It's a 2 x 867 Mhz G4 with 1 GB RAM, and operating under 10.5.8. What happens is when I select Shut Down from the Apple menu, all softwares shut down but the computer itself doesn't. Of course, when I press and hold the Power button, the computer shuts down. But you know, that's a well known technique to restart a MAC computer when you feel it's not working properly. The problem here is it doesn't shut down properly, and when it gets back on, all problems listed here are still there.
During the wait for it to shut down, the Dock remains active and if I select any software in the Dock to open, it does! So no shut down...
Another amazing thing, you know that little gray ball under the software's icon in the Dock that means the software is active? Well it's not there even if the software is active. Only the Finder gets it.
And I'm not done yet, believe me...
Mail doesn't advise with its usual red circle with the number of new messages. I have to check manually to see if I got new mail. At least, I have the warning sound...
Other thing: There is a real problem updating the softwares with the Software Update Utility found in System Preferences. I'm not the one who's doing it, I leave it to our technician. He also has to often flash the PRAM in order to reset the computer to an almost normal operation.
It looks like the Dock is screwed up, so is the Finder. Finally, I think the whole system is screwed up, but it is still operable even with all these symptoms.
With all that, anybody got suggestions? Is it software or hardware related?Hi-
In my opinion, it is almost always better to manually update your software.
Relying on the updater, especially when several updates need to be made, is a recipe for disaster.
When several updates are made simultaneously, if one is incompatible with system hardware, corrupt or incomplete, you won't know which one, where, or when the problem update occurred.
Now that the system is working more or less as it should, I would, first, download the proper OS version *Combo Update* and apply it.
If you are running 10.5.8, download and run the 10.5.8 Combo Update.
It is best to Repair Permissions with Disk Utility before AND after the update.
If the update does as it should, the system should then be completely normal and functioning, including the Software Update function. -
Mail doesn't shut down; need to Force Quit
Hi
Recently the Mail on my iMac has stopped shutting down (Alt-Q, or Mail/Quit, etc). To stop it, I need to Force Quit. Mail seems to go out to places I send to, and mail comes back in, but it won't shut down.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
thanks
dcI've been having this problem for several months. In fact, I was experiencing it on my G5 tower, under 10.5.6, and I had hoped that replacing the entire computer with a new iMac, and a brand new operating system, would make it go away. No Joy. Apparently the MIgration Assistant helped the problem migrate to my new machine.
But I'm posting this because I think it's significant that the problem exists independently of the operating system or hardware. I think there is some kind of plug-in or extension which can be transferred between machines and software versions.
Specifics: I can't quit mail normally on the desktop which was migrated from my old machine. 'Quit' grays out in the menu, but the program doesn't stop running. I can compose, send, and retrieve email as if nothing is wrong. This problem does not appear when I create a new desktop account and log in on that one. Mail quits normally on that desktop. But on the migrated desktop, I can never quit normally. Force quit will work, though, which is an improvement over 10.5.6, when I had to do a hardware reset. -
I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open. It says to close mail and continue shut down. Problem is I can't open or close mail now. Can't shut down my computer at all. What can I do?
If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot. -
External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11
i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
thanksSome hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

I had a disk error with a SD disk from my camera. Removed the disk from the card reader and got the Disk Removal Error alert. Then the whole thing froze up on me. Noting else would eject, No other apps would shut down and basically nothing worked. I couldn't shut down so I removed the battery. Restarted the computer ok then tried to repair the SD disk in question. No luck on the repair so ejected it again. Then tried to restart OS and it won't shut down again except everything still works but it just won't shut down.

Mini Mac won't shut down!
Core Duo won't shut down or log out or re-start but can sleep. Can use terminal to kill processes but it is not an application causing the problem. The output is to a TV via S-Video and am using wireless keyboard via USB.
Appreciate any suggestions.hello to the mac world
@sunra
same problem here on my mini mac, intel solo core, happens 3 times in one week now.
it seems that my mini ignores shutdown, restart and log out.
when I terminate the task "login window" then he jumps to the login screen, where I can shutdown or change the user.
anyone an idea about this little problem?
okay, it is not a big problem and with this problem I feel already home now...yes, I used windows the last years

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
Thanks.Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.
Morten G
Trondheim, NorwayWhat makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this? -

Has anyone seen this before? All help greatly appreciated!Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your quick reply. Here's what I tried:
1. reset the install as you suggested, and tried running root.sh again. The exact same thing happened.
2. restored to an openfiler snapshots that were taken right before the failed upgrade. Increased memory on both VMs to 1280M as you suggested. Rebooted the virtual environment and ran the installation again. This time, the root.sh script froze my environment - not enough memory to support this.
3. restored the openfiler snapshots again. Increased memory on one node (odbn1) to 1500M. Ran the install for a single node cluster. It got past this error.
Thank you!!!
Also, thanks for the tip on the ntp.init file. That did eliminate the error for ntpd not running during the installation. -

Mail stops mac shutting down.
Hey richardfromloveland,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with the Mail application on your MacBook. If you are unable to quit the application, you may need to force quit it:
OS X Mavericks: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13975
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.
When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
Thanks,

Mail Disappeared After Shut Down
A retired friend bought a new 21.5 inch iMac 5 months ago and twice in the past week his mail has completely disappeared. Fortunately, there is a TM backup and I have used that once to restore everything for him. The first event also took away all Address Book and iPhoto contents.
Yesterday, he was unable to Quit or Force Quit Mail. He shut down and restarted and once again all his Mail content has gone west.
Does Mail need to be reinstalled?
All suggestions welcome.Ah, forgot, silly Apple has hiden the home Library folder in 10.7 & up...
Access User ~/Library Folder in OS X Mountain Lion & OS X Lion
Use “Go To Folder” and Open ~/Library/ Directly
All you need to do is hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library to temporarily access the Library directory in the Finder. When you are done, close this window and it will no longer be visible.

Import to iPhoto. Mac won't shut down..
I imported some of my pictures from my iPhone to iPhoto, I then stopped the import and took out my iPhone. My iPhoto won't shut down now and it says that the import shall finish before I can shut it down. I can't even shut down my macbook, because of this. Anybody who knows what to do about it?
Thank you so much, for the information. This worked for me as well (using force quit). I still have the issue of iPhoto not importing my last set of photos. I did force quit and then restarted iPhoto, hoping the pictures (and one video) would just upload and it still won't import them. I keep getting the same message as before, "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for import to complete". Only option is to click 'ok". or do a force quit. Have any input about this?
