Mail won't stop downloading

Turned mail off, then on again, because my password wasn't being recognized.  When I turned it on again, the problem went away. BUT the phone kept downloading old mail for the next several hours and it's still downloading old mail.  How can I make it stop?

Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded from the server. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose. It could be that there is something wrong with that file, or with your Inbox, but it could also be that Mail is choking on some troublesome message on the server. Let's try this first:
1. Quit Mail.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
3. Move the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded files to the Trash.
4. Move INBOX.mbox to the Desktop (don't trash it), to be imported later.
As a result or removing the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded files, Mail will try to download everythng still on the server as if new. You can use the Account Info window first to remove from the server any messages you don't want to be downloaded again. In order to do that, choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature.

  • Mail won't stop downloading messages... and won't quit either...

It just started a few days ago. It has been working just fine, even after I upgraded to Tiger (which was several months ago, finally). Over the last few days, when I launch Mail.app, it downloads all the same messages that have been on the server since Friday and won't ever complete the download. It just spins and spins. SO, the messages are never officially retrieved and removed from my POP server (which is a setting I have turned on). If I force quit the app. Or even quit the process (which doesn't usually have any effect), I then relaunch Mail.app and it re-downloads all the messages. Now I have about 5 copies of all these messages. And I can't seem to just quit the app.
I read a post that involved trashing the inbox and reimporting it back in. I'm not sure if that is the approach here. OR, if I can infact, just delete a particular cache file or temp file, or something that might get the Mail.app un-stuck.
Any thoughts? Let me know if you need any more specifics.
    Thanks!

  • Mail won't stop downloading messages long ago deleted from server

I'm setting up my new macbook (with snow leopard) and I'm running into a problem with Mail. Even though I've deleted all my junk mail from the Google server and emptied the trash, Mail will still download everything every email I've received in the 2+ years I've had my gmail account (thousands of them)! Some of these messages are ones that I thought I got rid of years ago, it's a little scary to know they're still out there. If I go through the whole inbox, delete them, and empty my trash, they all just come back the next time I check for new mail. The gmail trash is also empty -- when I log into that there are only 50 messages in the inbox and nothing else. Help please!

The reason is that the emails aren't really deleted.
    They're "marked for deletion."
Gmail (as much as I understand it) is a variation on imap.
In an imap account, when you "delete" an email, it's marked for deletion.
The client then either stops displaying it, or displays it with s trike through, depending on client and setup.
To actually get rid of it permanently, you have to Purge the emails as well.
I don't know that Gmail will allow a purge, since their stated intent is to not delete any email, but to retain it forever.
I would suggest using a full email client like Thunderbird to send the proper Purge commands and see what happens.
Or, you use pop and set the date range in the gmail config.

  • Mail won't stop downloading old mail

I just upgraded to IOS 5 on my iPad2. I have a number of mail accounts set up. When i open up the mail program it checks for new mail and then it uploads hundreds of old mail as if I haven't read them before and I have to painstakingly delete them one at a time. When I open up mail later on it continues to do the smae thing with the same mail!
    1) Is there anyway to convince the Mail program tha I only want new mail starting from today?
    2) Is there any way to bulk delete mail rather than one at a time?
This problem is also compounded by how Mail marks new mail.  My two mail services are Optonline. And Gmail.  Where Optonline puts a solid blue circle in front of ecery new piece of mail. My Gmail does nothing to note new mail, it's just there. So
    3) How can I get Gmail to mark new mail, so that I know I have some without having to check it all of the time and read the date stamps?

What is your account type - POP or IMAP?

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If those don't work - sign out of your account - Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad and then go back to Settings>Store and sign in again.

  • Mail won't stop checking some accounts

Anyone have this happen before? Mail won't stop checking a couple accounts I have. They are accounts we use every single day, run off our own server. They will check fine on other macs, but not this iMac starting a few hours ago. I have rebuilt the boxes, deleted all mail from the servers and updated to 10.5.4 just in case. Still the same thing.
I have to force quit, then once restarted it will grab new e-mails before it craps out and just sits there spinning on accounts again.
    Ideas? Thx.

I'm experiencing the same issue with one of my POP accounts as well.
I've tried the "Rebuild" command in the Mailbox menu as well as rebuilding the Apple Mail Envelope Index, but it's still attempting to sync.
Has anyone found a resolution to this issue?

  • My computer and iPhone mail programs have stopped downloading my email. What happened?

Yesterday, my Mail program stopped downloading my mail messages from my email server. I noticed it won't download to my phone, either. Actually, it lets a few messages through, but not all. I went in preferences, but everything looks normal. What could be the problem?

My mac mail program has stopped sending incoming mail downloads. Have spend many hours trying to figure this out..
It keeps asking for a password and won't accept the one I have. Why is the server not working? I am on 10.5 OS and
wondering if that is the problem? Having to pay $100 for an upgrade every year is a rip off....

10.6 is $29, 10.7 is $29, buy them both and you wont spend $100

  • Mail will not stop downloading

    I have a flat screen iMac 800 w/ OS 10.3.9 and mail 1.3.11.
The mail continuously downloads nonstop. How do I stop this? If I delete the mail it just downloads the same stuff again. The server wil not let the mail be deleted by Mac mail once it is downloaded. I have a laptop with the same accounts and it behaves normally. Mail only downloads once on that computer. But that one has OS 10.4 on it.
    G4 Powerbook & iMac 800   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    G4 Powerbook & iMac 800   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    You're welcome.
my isp's mail will let my mail stay on the server for a very long
    time before it is deleted
This isn't strange. What's strange is that you cannot remove the messages from the server if you wish.
I did as you said to do in your last post and even emptied the trash
and did a restart. It still still wants to download over 8000 mails
    from the server.
As I said in my previous post, this was to be expected. Deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded causes Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again. What deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded is supposed to accomplish is to get rid of any corruption that might be causing Mail to download the same messages repeatedly.
I think that I may have to manually delete all the old mail on the server
    Definitely.
Having two machines downloading the same mail when one machine is seldom
used just isn't working it seems.
It should work, but you may need to clean up the server first.

  • Mail - Won't stop recovering messages!

A couple days ago, I was trying to email some .zip files (they were photos that I put in a .zip) to my friend. However, they were too big so it didn't send. So I ended up just not emailing them at all and quit out of Mail.
Now, whenever I open Mail, there's a new folder called "ON MY MAC" and under it is "Recovered Messages." The messages under the "Recovered Messages" folder is all the emails that I tried to send to my friend a few days ago. I tried deleting these messages from the folder, but they keep coming back! Mail keeps recovering these messages, but I don't need them anymore. I just want to delete them. How do I stop it from automatically recovering these unnecessary messages?
Also, the spinning circle next to my inboxes won't stop spinning. Which I think slows down Mail entirely... I tried going to Window > Activity and tried to stop the activity, but then it would just start up again. So now I usually just get frustrated with Mail lagging all the time and just quit out of it.

  • How do you stop itunes video download on ipad? No pause button appears. Won't stop downloading, over and over again.

I purchased a tv episode on my ipad. It started to download, after an hour it gave an error message. The episode appeared in videos, I watched it. Then I discovered it was still downloading. It gets up to the end, then starts all over again. Nothing I do will stop it. There is no pause button, nothing happens when I swipe it. I've tried everything, turning off, signing out of appleid, it basically eats up my bandwith nonstop and I can no longer use my ipad. How do I get this thing to stop downloading?

to the right by search library theres an arrow there click on it : it will show you what it is downloading , from there you can pause and select all and delete them but still will continue to download them if you tell itunes to check for downloads. that download engien is crazy i tell yeah.
no matter what we do it will still download them trust me i tryed everything and i also went to icloud to see if it was there but to what i see is that there is no apps there this is some crazy itune program that needs to remade.

  • ITunes won't stop downloading TV shows

Last December I was going on vacation and began downloading the entire season of Pan-Am. After watching one episode, I decided to stop the downloads. Ever since, every time I connect my iPhone to my laptop or even just start iTunes, it continues to try downloading the episodes. I have deleted the episodes, I have gone into the iTunes folder and deleted them, and nothing has worked. I cannot stop downloading them! I pause them every time I open it, but I would like to stop completely.

This did not work for me.
    Nothing works for me.
Sometimes when I load iTunes, it tries to automatically download all sorts of TV shows I purchased.
Even Season 2 episodes of Dexter I watched long ago.
Not every time.  Maybe every other time?  Or every third time I load iTunes.
It seems so arbitrary, that I think it's seriously trying to mess with me.
It also happens when I select "Check for Available Downloads" --
I don't have a good enough internet connection to download 57 gigabytes worth of TV I don't want to watch.
Even if I delete Dexter from iCloud.
Even if I pause the downloads and mark them as watched.
    Nothing works.
    Dexter will not go away.
    I want to murder iTunes.

  • When opening Mail, sending mail won't stop searching?

When I open mail App. On my MBP, running Lion mail loads all my accounts fine, but sending mail doesn't stop searching for sbcglobal.net account. Therefor can't send any mail from any accounts.

Maintenance you do before you need it! I do it at least once a month, sometimes more often. The free application Onyx is a great application for this.
It could also be that you don't have enough working RAM. Pages can have problem with memory use when the documents are large in Mb.
