Mail won't stop trying to send!

I tried to send a short video and I guess it was not a valid format for mail to send in or it was to big? But now everytime I open up mail it automatically tries to send and send (volleyball spinning) until it stops and abruptly quits the whole program. Of course while the spinning is going on I can't get into the drafts folder, where I believe the vid is, to delete it. I can't move the coursor, can't get into preferences, or into any other app at all untill the spinning stops and the app quits by itself. Because of this I can't use mail so I got so frustrated that I eventually just deleted the whole app and told myself I would just reinstall it. Instead of reinstalling the whole OS I used a shareware program called Pacifist which lets you install specific apps from the DVD. I finally installed mail again and once again to my demise it open up and immediately started to try to send or got caught up on this "bad file" froze and finally quits like always. I've done disc repair, I've gone to my mailboxes on the web and tried to delete this file or whatever it is and it's not on my web mail. Webmail works fine but everytime I open up mail it does the same thing. Basically i can't use it. Is there a way to have mail stop trying to send/recieve/read files so I can delete whatever is keeping the Volleyball spinning or I'll just be fine deleting all of my e-mail and starting all over again with a bare bones mail app? Please help!

Any message that isn't successfully sent remains in the Outbox mailbox and this is why the Mail.app continues to try to send it when re-launched.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the problem message.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.
Since you re-installed the Mail.app from your Panther install discs using Pacifist and unless your Panther install discs include 10.3.9, you need to download the 10.3.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.3.9 to get the Mail.app to the current version as of 10.3.9 if your OS version details are accurate.
What was or is the size of this video attachment?
All email attachments must be encoded before the message is sent which increases the size of the pre-encoded file. The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding which is the internet standard. As a general rule, MIME encoded binary file attachments are approximately 150% of the size of the original pre-encoded file. If the pre-encoded size of this video file was/is 5 MB, the encoded size will be roughly 7.5 MB or even larger.

  • Attachment to large but mail won't stop trying to send

By mistake I attached my 212mb 'public' folder to mail. Obviously it wouldn't send but it keeps trying to and failing. I now can't delete the message and stop mail from sending.
How can cure the problem as the program has now seized.

I am having a similar problem but its not the that the email is invalid due to attachment size, but because the SMTP details are no longer working. OK, but there should really be a much shorter timeout period. I would like to try to send the email using a different account.
Even when I take it offline I still can't stop it. Its just a real pain. Apple what are you doing?

  • My phone won't stop trying to send iMessages to a Blackberry user

My friend experimented with the iPhone 4S, but returned it a week later for another Blackberry.  Now my iPhone won't stop trying to send him iMessages.  I've tried deleting his contact info (from everywhere, including the iCloud), and re-entering it.  I've also tried deleting all previous text/iMessage conversations with him.  Restoring, resetting, etc.  Nothing has worked.  Any thoughts/suggestions?

You don't have much choice, do you? You're either going to have to restore the software or take it to the Genius Bar to see about getting that button fixed.

  • Mail won't stop attempting to send message after 3 days

Greetings.  My wife's iPhone 4 has been attempting to send a large message via Mail for the past 3 days.  I'd like to stop the message since it's clearly not going to be sent.  I've tried turning the phone off and on, but to no avail.  The "Edit" box in the upper right corner is unavailable.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks so much and have a great day.

Have you tried deleting the message from the Outbox?
Restarting or resetting the device will never stop an email from sending.  The only way to stop it is to delete the message or remove and re-add the email account.

  • MacMail won't stop trying to send an unsendable file

My wife, a .mac subscriber, recently tried to forward a huge PDF file to several addresses. For some reason the file cannot be sent successfully, but the program keeps trying, and although she has repeatedly tried to erase the file, turned the mail program off and on, turned the computer off and on, etc., every time she opens her Sent folder the little wheel starts turning to indicate that there's no quit in Mac land. What can she do?

Hi, I had this happen a while ago. Tried everything from within Mail - no dice.
Eventually I fixed it in Finder. First quit Mail or Force Quit if necessary. Then open a Finder window & go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox.mbox/Messages and delete the message. Re-open Mail and everything should be OK.
    Good luck,

  • Mail won't stop trying to receive mail

The whirly just keeps spinning next to the inbox. I try to quit and I get the spinning beach ball and the "application not responding" requiring Force Quit.
It's a POP account. Connection and login to server succeeded.
I opened the Account Info window by choosing Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window. There is a whirly at the bottom left corner that just keeps spinning next to "(pop account) calculating sizes" and no messages show in the window.

  • Mail won't stop checking some accounts

Anyone have this happen before? Mail won't stop checking a couple accounts I have. They are accounts we use every single day, run off our own server. They will check fine on other macs, but not this iMac starting a few hours ago. I have rebuilt the boxes, deleted all mail from the servers and updated to 10.5.4 just in case. Still the same thing.
I have to force quit, then once restarted it will grab new e-mails before it craps out and just sits there spinning on accounts again.
    Ideas? Thx.

I'm experiencing the same issue with one of my POP accounts as well.
I've tried the "Rebuild" command in the Mailbox menu as well as rebuilding the Apple Mail Envelope Index, but it's still attempting to sync.
Has anyone found a resolution to this issue?

It will time out, if it hasn't already. Delete the message from the Outbox.

  • When opening Mail, sending mail won't stop searching?

When I open mail App. On my MBP, running Lion mail loads all my accounts fine, but sending mail doesn't stop searching for sbcglobal.net account. Therefor can't send any mail from any accounts.

Maintenance you do before you need it! I do it at least once a month, sometimes more often. The free application Onyx is a great application for this.
It could also be that you don't have enough working RAM. Pages can have problem with memory use when the documents are large in Mb.

  • Mail not working after trying to send videos. Spins trying to bring in new mail until I force quit.

Yesterday I inserted some videos in an email. Wouldn't send: too big. I removed one at a time. Same message. No choice to delete the email, so I clicked try later. Evidently it tried 33 times, because there were 33 copies of it in "recovered files." I deleted those, but Mail still won't work. I have to force quit to close Mail. Turned off computer. Back on, it keeps doing the same thing. The gear spins next to the inbox, and it won't stop. Brings in no new mail.
Mail works on my iPhone, so I think I it must be corrupted on this iMac (10.6.8).  what can I do?
    Thanks for any help!
    Ginny

More info on this, still from me!  The emails in the recovered messages folder that I deleted are STILL there! The same 33 copies of the email with videos pasted in. How can I get rid of them? I'm pretty sure that they are the problem...the program is still trying to send them or something!
    Please, someone...help!

  • Mail - Won't stop recovering messages!

A couple days ago, I was trying to email some .zip files (they were photos that I put in a .zip) to my friend. However, they were too big so it didn't send. So I ended up just not emailing them at all and quit out of Mail.
Now, whenever I open Mail, there's a new folder called "ON MY MAC" and under it is "Recovered Messages." The messages under the "Recovered Messages" folder is all the emails that I tried to send to my friend a few days ago. I tried deleting these messages from the folder, but they keep coming back! Mail keeps recovering these messages, but I don't need them anymore. I just want to delete them. How do I stop it from automatically recovering these unnecessary messages?
Also, the spinning circle next to my inboxes won't stop spinning. Which I think slows down Mail entirely... I tried going to Window > Activity and tried to stop the activity, but then it would just start up again. So now I usually just get frustrated with Mail lagging all the time and just quit out of it.

  • Mail not working after trying to send a very large file - how to "unclog?"

Yesterday, I tried to send a file with Gmail via Mail and it was evidently too big. I have deleted it and it no longer appears in the Outbox, but Gmail doesn't work on my Mail anymore. It's constantly trying to sync with Gmail, unsuccessfully. It's slowing down my computer and I don't receive Gmails. If I try to mail with Gmail through Mail, it takes an extraordinarily long time and 99% of the time doesn't go through.
My Yahoo account is working fine. I can also access Gmail online (but I hate it!) -- so the problem is somewhere between Mail and Gmail.
    What to do?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem and have tried stopping everything in the Activity window but when I click 'Get Mail' or quit and re-open Mail, the problem recurs so I have no mail after 1930 on Thursday despite there being new messages in my inbox.
There are 5 Activities shown; all of which show the barber's striped bar although it doesn't move.
    Opening Mailbox
Performing pending operations - copying message
[Gmail] Communicating with server - Adding Messages
    Fetching new mail
Synchronizing with server - Traversing mailbox hierarchy
It is working on my Macbook (10.6.4); just not on the iMac (10.6.5) so definitely not something router-related and the iMac wasn't working on 10.6.4 either so not convinced that has anything to do with it.

  • E-mail locked-up after trying to send a large video file.

I've restarted several times and e-mail is still locked. It still wants to send the file. There are three e-mail addresses aol, gmail and me.  I sent from aol first and got a message to try another due to file size.  I thought it would let me know if the file was too big tp send but it locked up and wouldn't let me do anything even after a forced quit.

Assuming that it's not still trying to send the video, then you could do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

    Hi,
yes smtp is a standard and I think you could use this with almost every smtp server.
If your smtp server doesn't require authentication you can access it without an authenticator
    I think...

  • The Archive Utility won't stop trying to unarchive

    hi there,
i downloaded a zip drive yesterday and the unarchive utility won't stop. i pressed cancel, and the cancel button greyed out. i've gone to force quit and it doesn't do anything. i've tried to shut down the computer and it says the shut down was canceled by the archive utility. any suggestions?\
    thank you!

try killing the process from Activity monitor.
if that doesn't help kill the loginwindow process that belongs to your user using Activity monitor. this will force an immediate user logout. if all else fails hold the power button to force a shutdown.
