Mail won't update inbox

This week, mail decided to stop updating my inbox on my macbook. My imac is having no problems at all so i know for a fact that there are messages in my inbox. However, my macbook just shows the spinning gear constantly and an empty inbox. I have two imap accounts that it is keeping up to date (i.e. subfolders that have recently been added too display correctly on the macbook), it's just the inbox that seems to be the problem. also, when mail is open, it uses a significant amount of internet bandwidth and bogs the computer down all around. suggestions?

then your Mail preferences could be corrupt. quit Mail and delete (or move to the desktop) the file ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. ~ means your home directory. you can get to it by clicking on the house icon in the sidebar of any finder window or by going to /users/username.
then start Mail. you'll have to recreate all your email accounts so make sure you know all their settings. once recreated they will recognize their existing mailboxes. see if Mail behaves after that.
Alternatively, if you have a backup, restore com.apple.mail.plist from backup from before the problems with Mail started. Mail should not be running when you do this.
yest another alternative is to delete the gmail imap account in mail preferences->accounts and recreate it from scratch. this might mean a large download though.

  • Mail won't update inbox folder

When I receive a new email in Mail, in order for it to show I have to quit Mail and reopen it. Then the inbox icon on the sidebar shows the number of new emails and it doesn't show in the message list until I click on another folder and then click again on inbox. I'm using a .Mac email account setup. I'm not sure what to do to fix this or why it would be doing something like this? Thanks.

  • Yahoo e-mail won't update the time since it's last update

Ok, so Yahoo Push has been unreliable since the release of the iPhone. However as of today I have a new issue.
When I go into my Yahoo e-mail Inbox on my iPhone and hit the update button, my e-mail account will update and download my new e-mails, however the "Updated Time" at the bottom of the screen seems to be stuck at 9:43am.
I have done the following to fix the issue to no avail:
    - soft reset
    - hard reset
    - deleted the yahoo email account from the iPhone and re-installed it
    - cleared cache, history and cookies from my iPhone
This issue only happens with my Yahoo INBOX. When I go to my trash, sent or other folders once the update has happened the "Updated Time" will change in those folders.
BTW - I am using a Yahoo Plus! account and switching to a Gmail account isn't a feasible solution.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? Anyone know how to fix this issue?
    Your help is appreicated.

Out of desperation here is what I did to fix my problem. I should note that while this refreshed the time for when my inbox was most recently updated it also made my Yahoo Push emails come through immediateley and is still continuing to work.
    1. Log into my Yahoo account (on my computer) and put all my inbox emails in a temporary holding folder
    2. Update my Yahoo inbox on my iPhone so that it will show no emails in my Yahoo inbox
    3. Delete my Yahoo account on my iPhone
    4. Log back into Yahoo on my computer and drag all the the emails that I placed in the "holding folder" back into my inbox
    5. Hard reset my iPhone
    6. Create a new Yahoo account on my iPhone using the settings provided by the iPhone
    7. Once the iPhone confirms the account viola...time is now updated on my inbox to show the most current date/time that it was updated and my Yahoo push emails are coming through without a problem.
Hope it works for you as well.

  • Mail won't update

    MBA 10.9.4
Mail has been working fine, though slow sometimes and requiring restarts to check new Mail, but even that has failed today.
Last couple days my internet connect has been from 2 different sources on the job temporarily.
One behind a firewall that would allow me to dl mail, but not send and the other a friends VzW HotSpot which worked flawlessly.
This morning back home, Mail will not update.  Webmail is fine. gMail on the Android phone is fine.
    I've tried:
    redoing acct settings in Mail.
deleting "envelope indexes ........." in ~/Lib/Mail/V2/MailData  - to force a rebuild.
    in Mail Connection doc:
Google IMAP and SMTP both fail to connect.
I've checked: ~/Lib/Mail/V2/MailData/Accts plist to see that it hasn't become bloated (10k).

ended up deleting gmail from sys prefs/internet accts and from Mail as well.
restarted and added back to both again.
    dunno what happened.

  • Mail won't open inbox after upgrade

After upgrading my dads macbook from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6, mail would open but nothing would pop-up. and when he opened the inbox manually, the account doesnt show up even though it is set correctly in the preferences.
also when he goes to quit the application, it won't quit. like it's ignoring him. he has to force quit in order to shut the computer off, otherwise when he tries to shut down with it running, it tells him he cant shut down because of mail.
he is in the process right now of updating the macbook to the latest leopard release and all subsequent updates before he goes ahead and installs his snow leopard upgrade. but as it stands, he is at 10.5.6 with this error.

    Hello k:
Tell him to not upgrade until the problem is resolved. Upgrading a problem system usually yields an upgraded problem system.
Tell him to rebuild the mailbox.

  • Mail box not updating inbox

I have gmail set as my mail preference in mail and it's not updating the inbox. I'm wondering if and how I can reset the gmail account. Can someone also tell me if what's the purpose of recovery folder. It is full of the same message over and over.
    Thanks

If you mean you want to rebuild your mailbox, that's at the bottom of the Mailbox menu. If you mean you want to delete and reconfigure your Gmail account, that's in Mail>Preferences>Accounts. As for your Recovery folder, I've never seen that on my Mail, but it sounds like your Mail tried to salvage a corrupted message.

  • Text messages won't load, visual voice mail barely works, e-mail won't update

I've had the HTC Rhyme for about two weeks. Last week I noticed my text messages were not loading. I I turned the phone off a few times. Still no text messages loading. I spoke with Verizon CS and they tried several solutions that did not work. I finally reset my phone and my text messages started loading again...for a couple of days. Exactly one week later my text messages are not loading again. I am not gonna reset my phone again. In addition to no text messages not loading, my visual voicemail works sometimes ( voicemails show up hours later). My aol email does not update. When I mentioned this to the Verizon CS they said "instead of using the phone's email setup, I should download the aol app from the Google Play Store. So, I downloaded the aol mail app last week. Since I had to reset my phone I had to download the aol mail app again. But, now I can't find the aol mail app in the Google Play Store. I am VERY dissatisfied with this phone.

Sstelliott, I sorry to hear of the issue you are having with your phone and I’m here to help!
Are you able to send text and picture messages? How do you know when you are not receiving a message? Do you get an error message? Are you able to access the Internet on your phone? Are you using a third party message app?
Run the phone in safe mode http://bit.ly/tXe7I4 and have someone send you a text to see if you receive. I want to make sure a third party isn’t causing these issues.
In regards to the visual voice mail, do you notice you have the delayed message when you’re in a certain area? Make sure airplane mode is disabled and that you’re able to access the Internet. Also, make sure call forwarding is disabled by dialing *73 send from your cell. You’ll hear a few beeps and the call will drop. Finally, update the phone by dialing *228 send and selecting option 2 to update. Once the update is complete make sure you power cycle the phone.
The update should also help with the email issues. You mentioned you are unable to find the app in the Google Plat store. Go to the Play store and on the main page select the Menu key. Go to My Apps. There you should see the email app if you previously downloaded it before you did the hard reset.
If you are still having issues after the troubleshooting step above, please post back and I’ll be more than happy to further assist you.

  • TS3276 Just upgraded to Lion;Mail won't update to Lion

When opening Mail, it's asking me to wait while it sets up. The bar shows it updating but it never completes the update/set up. IdeaS?

If your iPhoto version was iPhoto 7 (08) before you upgraded to Yosemite then you need to download and run/apply the upgrade application to your iPhoto Library before iPhoto 9.6 can open it.  Had you run the upgrade app?

  • Mavericks Mail won't update Exchange 2013 email

I see people have written about this already but there doesn't seem to be a solution posted in these forums and it seems like a major bug.
I use Apple Mail to connect to my work Exchange email. We use Server 2013.
Mail worked perfectly under Mountain Lion.
I updated my office iMac as well as my home iMac and MacBook Pro Retina Display to Mavericks on Tuesday and after doing that my Exchange email on all three devices would update with new mail very slowly -- maybe every half hour or when I started and re-started Mail. Mail updated on my iPhone and iPad instantly as well as through my office's WebMail portal. That is, this isn't a server-based issue.
Also, I have a Gmail account that updates normally.
Searching for answers online, there was a suggestion to change "check new mail" in preferences from "Automatically" to "Every 1 minute." That didn't work, even after I restarted Mail.
I tried reseting Mail on my office iMac by following instructions I found online. It involved going into the Library folder and deleting four or five Mail-related subfolders. After that, it was as though I was using Mail for the first time.
    That didn't work either.
The only other thing I can think of is a clean install of Mavericks but that seems extreme.
Does anyone have an answer to this?
The same problem on three devices makes it seem like this is more of a serious OS bug than a client-side issue.

Donna did anyone ever help you get this fixed? I am having the same problem!!

  • Mail won't update when I'm not using it..

    Hi guys,
I have been having some trouble with my Mail, I use hotmail and the mail app on iPhones just recently it hasn't been updating when I'm not in the app, so I have been missing a lot of emails and they haven't been showing and only show when I go on the app and refresh it manually! It used to do it automatically but now it's stopped, I might of clicked something on settings but I'm not sure what! Not sure if this makes a difference I put on airplane mode through the night (something I have always done anyway) when I first turn off all the mail comes through automatically then from the night time however after this I get nothing without manually going into the app! If anyone can help me sort this I would be very grateful.

  • Yahoo mail won't update MacBook or iMac?

Seems i have tried many removals and re-installs.  Ensuring that IMAP servers are in place, yet I don't get automatic updates into the Mac Mail application.
Please let me know what to do to correct it ... Thanks !!

Try to go into the settings, mail, contacts and calendars. Delete your mail account, exit out, go back in and re-enter the info and see if it works then

  • Apple Mail won't update and keeps recovering the same message.

My Apple Mail hasn't been working since 31st January. Every time I open it the same email just continues duplicating itself in the "Recovered messages" folder so I end up with hundreds of them. This email was the last email that was successfully sent and I was overseas at the time. When I returned home, my email would not update and it has not worked since.
I have tried rebuilding and taking mailboxes offline and online. Should I delete the 'mail' folder from my library? Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have not been using a Mac for too long, so I tend not to know what to do when something goes wrong.

    Hello,
You'd only want to delete boxes/accounts if you could afford to loose all those emauls.
Is this a POP account or IMAP?
Who is the Mail provider, the part after the @ sign?
