Mail wouldn't quit in 10.4.7

But thanks to an earlier thread, I looked at the third-party JunkMatcher filter and removing it solved the problem. Instructions are at

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

  • I recently updated my macbook pro to Maverick, there was another system update so I updated and once I did I noticed that my safari wouldn't quit. I was unable to shutdown. I finally force quit safari and was able to shut down. Now it won't turn back on!

    Hi rennekamp3,
If your machine currentlty won't boot past a grey Apple screen, you may find the following article helpful:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Note: If you get to the portion on starting from the Install Disks or performing an Archive/Erase & Install, you'll notice this article has not yet been updated for the more recent operating systems. In that case, you may want to refer to the following article:

  • Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit.

Hello world... (Mac world that is)
The message says more "Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try again, quit Mail and choose Log Out from the Apple menu."
I tried everything. Still does not let me shut down.
Other programs will not shut down at this time, including Finder. I also know that the Time Machine icon has been spinning for over an hour. So I imagine we are in a loop of sorts.
Unfortunately, I have had similar troubles before that I did not record. So I figure I start now and see if somebody out there can help me.
    Peace!
    Chopo

I'm having the same problem (can't logout, shut down or restart), but the referenced solution doesn't seem to apply. I do not get a "Cannot connect to server" message, I just get a "Logout has timed out" message. It seemed to happen after an automatic software update that was supposed to involve a restart, but it hasn't been able to restart since.
Can you please clarify, what is meant by "delete the AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary, which is located under the root node" (with reference to file loginwindow.plist)?
This is what the loginwindow.plist file looks like now:
    bplist00Ñ!AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary¢ÒTPathTHide-/Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HPEventHandler.app/Ò _N/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/Software Update/HP Scheduler.app//27
I was at the genius bar earlier, and they said I need to 'archive and install' in order to 'reset the OS'... but there's got to be a better answer than that, no? Perhaps this plist thing? I'm surprised that even powering off the imac doesn't reset anything... it just comes back the way it was. I'm supposed to bring the 25 inch imac in to the mac store for surgery (archive and install), but seeing several similar cases on this discussion forum, without archive and install identified as the clear solution, I'm in search of a second opinion... or any suggestion for how to simply make this work the way it was before? Is it 10.5.4 that is causing this? Should I go back to 10.5.3?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

  • HELP!! My Apple "MAIL" app. unexpectedly quits each time I open it.

My Apple "MAIL" app. unexpectedly quits each time I open it.
It will begin to load my mail, show the mailboxes and new e-mails and then all of a sudden quit.
I searched some of the Apple support and forums and have tried these things:
    1. I trashed the "com.apple.mail.plist" preference file in the pref. folder.
    2. I did an archieve install with Tiger OSX on my entire System Folder.
    3. I erased my user>library>"mail folder"
    4. I tried holding the shift key upon opening the program as suggested here but to no avail: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=479497&tstart=0
This has not resolved the problem. The program still quits every time I open it.

A few of the messages I deleted (the last 2 days) now say
"You need to take this account online in order to download it."
If this is the result of having deleted the *.emlx files manually, you're probably seeing this error message because there is still a reference to them in Envelope Index.
Is there anyway to tell Mail to re-download these
    mail files and reconnect them?
If they're still on the server, yes. Choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature. Now, choose the account that has the problem from the Account popup menu at the top of the window. Does Mail display there the messages that are missing? What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?

  • How could I re-open my mail box with error message :The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

How could I re-open my mail box, as an error message blocked "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" Even I entered re-open, the airbook does not response but prompt the same error message again.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Updated today and cannot open my mails it says: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

updated today and cannot open my mails it says: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

After i upgraged to Mavericks I am having a problem to open mail and get this message
The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?
    Please help
    Thanks

This works but you have to get all the Envelope Index files that might be in there.
Make sure that you also delete Envelope Index-shm and Envelope Index-wal
and there could be some files named this with gibberish as suffixes too.

  • Shut Down aborted because Mail will not quit

    Is anyone having this problem:
I've got Mail open and I want to shut down my computer. If Mail is open and I just go directly to shut down (letting shut down automatically close Mail), it fails because Mail will not quit. Shut down is aborted.
Also, sometimes I manually quit Mail, expecting it to already be closed, I shut down the MAC and it will not shut down the Mac even though it looks like I have closed Mail. It comes back and says Shut Down Aborted because Mail failed to close.
I then have to Force Quit Mail.
This has been going on now for several Weeks. I'm starting to get concerned.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    jim

    Hi Otto,
There are many threads on this topic. I have contacted Apple a few times as well and have tried just about everything mentioned on these forums, with little or no help.
The last thing that I tried has reduced Mail's Quit time to about 50 seconds (not enough to abort a shutdown) where previously it simply refused to quit unless Force Quit. The trick in question: Unsubscribe from Apple's RSS feed (which is automatically subscribed to).
In addition, prior to the above change at various troubleshooting steps over several weeks I had also deleted all Notes, ToDos, rebuilt Mailboxes etc. Essentially I have eliminated all additional functionality in Mail, just so that I can use it to send and receive email without a glitch.
Take a look at these threads for some pointers:

  • Mail has unexpectedly quit.

I get the message "Mail has unexpectedly quit" in a dialog box just after the program shuts down when I click on some email. I can't find how to change the memory settings or anything on OSX. Can anyone help me with this?

OK, quit Mail (if running, somehow) and in the Finder open the Home folder to where you can see the Mail folder. Copy or Duplicate the Mail folder, and drag the copy to your Desktop -- this is strictly for temporary backup.
Next, open Home/Library/Preferences and find the com.apple.mail.plist file again, and drag it to the Desktop, where likely you will later want to delete.
If you are using Internet Explorer, or have it installed, open it, and open its preferences, to find General/Email, and remove its entries for your account.
Open System Preferences -- is there one for Email (currently there is not, but was in your version I believe)? Remove any account info, but not the selection of default mail reader, and close.
Start Mail again, and it should open as new, you will have to re-enter all your account setup information. DECLINE any option to import anything, and I think Mail will re-discover its account folder(s) and you should see all your messages. Test now, and see if the behavior persists.
    Keep me posted.
    Ernie

  • Apple Mail won't quit!

Installed OS X, now I can't shutdown because mail won't quit. Help somebody!!!

Same issue here.  15 MBP Retina Late 2012.  MacOS 10.9 and have installed the Mail Update for Mavericks to no avail.
I have iCloud email and two exchange accounts configured.  When I disable the iCloud account; force quit; then restart; it quits properly.   I've rebuilt the mailbox and have I'gone so far as to delete the iCloud account and add it back to no avail.

  • Mail crashes and quits immediately upon launch every time

Every time I launch Mail, it crashes, quits, and throws the following error to the console:
*com.apple.launchd[68] ([0x0-0x78078].com.apple.mail[854]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault*
When I remove Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and Mail from my ~/Library/, Mail will launch and allow me to enter settings, but crashes and quits after setup, throwing this error to the console instead:
*com.apple.launchd[68] ([0x0-0x73073].com.apple.mail[830]) Exited abnormally: Bus error*
I created another user account on this computer, and I was able to et up and run Mail smoothly under the alternative login. I also set up Thunderbird with the same settings in my primary user account, without any problems-- but Thunderbird's implementation is somewhat lackluster.
I'm running Mail 3.5 (930.3) on a new Aluminum MacBook with OS 10.5.6. Mail has always run flawlessly on my other machine, using identical settings with the same IMAP account, but that machine runs OS 10.4.11.
This problem has persisted since 19 December, and I can furnish the crash report if needed. Prior to this, I experienced intermittent Mail freezes and other problems.
