Mailbox full of unreadable messages and more fun

recently did a reinstall (after backing everything up to an external drive) only to find after reimporting all my mail settings i find my mailboxes full (expected this) but the following message attached to each message
*The message from ** concerning *** has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.*
the account is online. i have 4k of messages i'd like to save and find i can't now.
here's the other problem: as stated before the mail accounts have been set up as before the reinstall, only now they're not receiving email nor are they sending.
any ideas out there?

never mind. fixed it by booting from the external, making sure mail behaved, and then deleting the plist, cache and mail folder in the library. replaced all items from the bootable drive.

  • Thunderbird is telling me that there is an unread message and it is one I read several days ago, listed in bold type again.

Every day or so Thunderbird says there is an unread message. I look for it and find it on the list of my messages received. It is in bold type as if it is unread. However I had read the message days ago.
I had this problem a couple weeks ago and decided to delete all the messages in my inbox. That solved the problem for a couple weeks, now it is back. I thought at first it was because my inbox was getting overloaded but now there are only a couple hundred messages in it. Maybe I should just uninstall Thunderbird and then install it again.

remove all mails from the inbox (Copy them to another folder or delete them. It makes litle difference.
Now Select File menu (alt+F) > compact folders.
I am guessing there is some corruption hiding away in there. A compact should fix it, but will do it better on an empty folder.

  • How can I make the red unread messages bubble go away? I have no unread messages and I can't stand seeing the red bubble.

I am on the latest 10.10.1 Yosemite, but this problem has happened to me on previous operating systems. On my dock I have a red bubble that says I have unread messages waiting. When I go to messages, I have no unread items. I even went as far and deleted every single conversation. The bubble went away but returned quickly.
I cannot stand to look at the red bubble. I hate ever having red bubbles on anything because I am type A and it drives me insane. Please help. I find it very distracting.

You can simply turn it off.

  • Mail says I have 5 unread messages, and yet I do not.

Just updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 7, and the software seems to think that I have 5 unread messages. I tried running through all the mail, restarted it, and then hard reset it. Still shows 5 unread. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue.  Turns out I had my mac open and the mail was being pulled there but not on my phone.  I deleted the messages on my mac and the indicator went away.  It could be a bug, I would submit feedback if that is the case http://www.apple.com/feedback/.  That is probably what I will do.

  • Exchange unread count won't update for mailbox with 1000+ unread messages

Hi - I'm having an issue with mail on the iPhone and iPad where my Exchange inbox won't update after downloading a 1000+ new messages on Saturday. I marked them as read and moved them to another mailbox on my Mac but they're stuck in the inbox on my iPhone even after restarting phone and deleting account and re-adding it. I am able to download new messages and they are updated properly.

Things updated after I switched from check manually to check every 15 minutes. Weird.

  • TS3276 I have two email accounts set up on Mail.  One shows the unread messages and the other one doesn't... how can I get it to show both account's unread messages?

I have two email accounts set up on my Mail application.  Both pull in and send just fine but ever since I upgrade the exchange sever and re-setup the account It won't show the unread (number) to the right of the inbox?  The other one shows up just fine.  Any clues would be great!  Thank you.

  • Error (-48) message, and more...

For the past two months I have been having problems with my Fifth-Generation 80 GB iPod that I purchased in March. I'd be playing music on it, and occasionally it would freeze up, either randomly (when a new track came on -- not specific tracks, so far as I could tell) or if I were to try switching menus. Usually though, as long as I would reset the iPod, it would return to normal working order (sometimes I'd get the "restore" message, but if I reset the iPod again, it would work fine). This happened a little more frequently as time went on.
Last week I decided to go through my iPod library to see if there were any corrupted files or anything, and found that in fact iTunes couldn't read about 2000 songs in the library. It was equally strange, because there was no pattern -- whole albums, random songs, songs that I had been listening to that morning, all apparently corrupted or missing. And also, songs that I knew had froze the ipod before seemed to be working just fine, with no exclaimation mark next to their entry.
At that point I had tried everything but restoring the iPod, so I went ahead and restored it. The first time, the pod and iTunes froze during the restore. After restarting my computer, I restored it, and then let iTunes automatically synch my library to the ipod. That froze up after loading about 600 songs (in a library of roughly 11500). I restored again, auto-synched, and it froze again. Restored once more, and manually added songs. It worked for a while but froze up. This cycle basically continued, not allowing me to add files to the ipod.
I took it to my local Apple store, and the guy that helped me out said it could be iTunes or perhaps corrupted files. I took it back home, and updated, than reinstalled iTunes. I tried adding files again, and it worked to a point, but after disconnecting the ipod, and then reconnecting it, files that originally showed up in the ipod as having been transferred successfully all of a sudden were not able to be recognized. The original files themselves are fine -- I checked and they play correctly and as far as I can tell are not corrupted.
I reattempted to add new files today, and the same problem occurred. However, there's a new twist -- now, whenever I plug my ipod into my computer and it shows up in itunes, if I click on anything within the ipod itself, i get a message that says "ipod can't be synched. an unknown error occured (-48)."
I apologize for the lengthy post, but I really don't know what else I can do. It kind of seems like I'm stuck with a really fancy paperweight now. If anyone gets through this monster and has ideas, please let me know -- if you need any more information, please just ask!
    Thanks.

I would not blindly follow the storage adviser on this. It does its best, but it is just a basic algorithm. You have 88 million input rows, which is too large for a non-partitioned cube. The fact that the build takes up to 60 hours is proof enough of this. I think you will get a better build and query time if you have 10 or more partitions. The benefit of partitioning is twofold:
    (1) It reduces the number of cells, or 'working set', that needs to be processed at one time. This makes it more likely that the data will fit into memory.
    (2) You can build several partitions in parallel. This may or may not help in your case since it is a relatively small cube and you have only a dual core processor. But you should try 2 parallel processes.
Once you have tried partitioning, you should try compression again. It is unusual for query time to increase with a compressed cube (unless you have selected no precomputation). The recommended approach for compressed cubes is to use 'cost based aggregation'. I would start with 30% (with 0% for the top partition).
You may also look at the configuration of your system since OLAP has its own requirements.

  • Why does my email show thousands(!) of incoming messages -- and more...!

How come every day when I log in and open my mail, the bottom of the email screen shows thousands of incoming messages -- see attached. This happens every day. Today was the highest amount I've ever seen -- 452449 -- and it is still running closed the mail program because I was worried it would take up space on my hard drive if that many messages were really coming in.
My normal messages appear in the in-boxes and a few junk emails. I've had gmail since it started, but even if it was downloading my entire history of emails, I doubt I would be anywhere near ten thousand.
I use a few different gmail accounts and read the email on the Mail program on Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2011 Air.
    Thanks!

  • Verify - Prompting failed with the following error message: ". (and more)

This would be much easier to read with paragraphs... oh well.
First up, I have found a relevant KB article on this issue and have seen that this was possibly fixed with SP2. The article actually references a file date that does not exist in the list of downloadable support files (sigh), but the SP2 date is a few weeks after the referenced date and the first file after that date, so I'll assume it's in there.
Unfortunately I think my client might be using an OEM version of crystal. They have business objects XI, but there is no phone number listed in the tech support box of the help->about dialog. OEM Product Warning suggests the number should be (604) 669 8379... (this, by the way, seems like an extremely odd and unreliable way of determining the version of a software product) but I don't know how up to date that page is, a lot of links etc seem to be out of date.
In any case, what I really want to know is why would this happen in the first place? The report was working fine until today, and no changes were made to the report other than some formatting (the group pie chart type apparently likes to make the pies so big when there are only 2 groups that they overlap... awesome!).
I even tried removing my data source entirely and adding a completely new data source (which of course made all my charts disappear, but hey, what the hell at this point), and I still got the error.
I must say, today has been an extremely frustrating day working with crystal. As well as this error I was getting an "export failed" error... but only on one report out of 5... when attempting to export to to a disk file. Turns out a picture object got corrupted and lost it's height component, the graphic went missing even though the object was still on the report, and attempting to set the height in the dialog didn't help. Copying the graphic in again seems to have fixed it for now... but who knows for how long.
And yet again I have a report that runs a stored procedure which takes only seconds to run on the database, but never returns when run with the same parameters through crystal (AND somehow locks up SQL Server... THIS I don't get AT ALL, it's a stored proc, crystal isn't accessing tables directly, the proc should simply execute and return, so how are locks/transactions being held?? Of course they wont give me sa access so I cant see what's happening on the server) Changing from ODBC to OLEDB makes no difference. AND I discovered that copying drawing objects from one report to another often causes the crystal IDE to crash, losing all unsaved work. YEAH!
    (End venting).

Hello, If you are indeed using an OEM build you need to log your issues with them. They are responsible for first line of support and if there are issues theyc an log the case with our support to a solution of provide you with a work around.

  • Website access dns and more fun

Hmm, that's a bit odd.  Maybe he is developing that site under the above path, but on a different server/CNAME perhaps?  I would ask the developer as that is weird.

So, we have a fairly typical MS domain setup here.   Lets call it blank.edu.
We have a site hosted by hostgator at www.blank.edu.
The site loads and works fine from inside the domain and has since we added a dns record for it.
The developer is building a new wp site and built it here:  www.blank.edu/dev2
I would think he would have done this another way, but regardless.
That page will not load from inside the network or while connected to the vpn.
I don't think I can make a dns record go to a directory like that. Any ideas on how to get this working while on the lan?
    Thanks

  • Unread message count is wrong in Mail and Dock

Just last week I noticed that both my Email Inbox & Mail Dock Icon is showing an incorrect unread message count on both my MacBook & iMac. I am using a Microsoft Exchange Hosted account (Office 365) and it is the only email account tied to both of my Macs. My iPhone shows the correct unread message count as well as Outlook Web Access, and on a seperate windows-based computer, Outlook is showing the correct unread message count of 3. Both Mac systems are using OS X 10.7.3 and I have never experienced this issue before.
The MacBook is showing 39 unread messages, and the iMac is showing 16, in actuality there are 3 unread messages. If I create a smart mailbox that shows only unread messages - it shows up with the correct number (3), when I sort by "Unread Messages" for Inbox, it only shows that I have three unread messages.
I have rebuilt the inbox, I have deleted the email account from the computer, restarted the computer and then readded it, all it did was bring the unread message count from 19 to 16 on my iMac (still - it should be 3).
I have also gone to Mail -> Preferences -> General and verified that Show Dock Unread County is set to "Inbox" but oddly enough, when I click "All Mailboxes" the unread count on the Dock changes to 3.
Is there a file I can delete to reset that unread message count? I feel like I've done everything that's suggested to no avail.
    Thanks!

There is a small glitch, and you guys are close.
In Mail Preferences under General, there is the option for:
    Dock Unread Count --
Your choices in the dropdown are either:
    None
    Inbox Only
    All Boxes
The problem is that I've often seen the Inbox Only is checkmarked, and stays as checkmarked, even when you last told it to use either None or All Boxes.
It is possible that Alconic see's Inboxes Only checkmarked, when in fact it's All mailboxes that are set to be showing.
Try to re-check "Inbox only" even though it's already checked and see what happens...

  • App Store, Messages and FaceTime Won't Open

    I own a Macbook Pro (15-inch mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.9.5)
I was using my Messages App just this morning and all of a sudden it stopped working.
I have tried opening it from the Applications Folder as well as directly from my Dock.
What happens is the icon for the Messages App bounces several times (usually three after I press it the first time) and the screen will not appear.
The icon shows currently that I have three unread messages and even when I hold and click and try to open a "new message" or an "unread message" the screen won't open.
I tried several other apps just to see if this was an isolated incident, but I found that FaceTime, App Store and iPreview will not open either. They all bounce a few times, but they will not open a screen. My App Store even shows that there is one new update, but it won't open.
I have tried so many things from a lot of older threads but I am completely clueless on what to do.
    Can anyone help me?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • Can't get rid of unread mail icon--shows 2 unread messages but can't find any

I've got a smart mailbox that shows unread messages so I can easily see what new and unread mail I have.  The problem is it gives me the notification icon that indicates I have two unread messages, yet the mailbox does not show any messages as unread...  This isn't a huge problem, but the Mail icon in my dock always shows that I have new mail, and the notification icon is small enough that I can't always clearly see if it's the "usual 2" or a higher number.  What could be causing this and how do I either find the unread messages or get this icon reduced to where it only shows me REAL unread messages?
    Rocketman

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Wrong number of unread messages N9

One of POP3 accounts is misinformation about the number of unread messages. Where this information is stored and if we can change it.
I have 0 messages in this box, but in accounts screen in Fenix i have 1 unread. Some days ago i try to delete one unread message, but meanwhile my PC e-mail client just downloaded and deleted the message from server.
So i need to know where in OS is stored this information and, if possible, to change it.

Thanks for those thoughts BDAqua. I forgot to mention that I had done the usual disk repairs and permission repairs, and also trashed the Mail cache folder and EnvelopIndex file. I've even re-installed Mac OSX.4.11 Combo updater to no avail.
Here's another weird clue, as I realise it's occuring on all mailboxes:
I should preface this by saying that incoming mail gets routed via Mail rules to various mailboxes.
If I finish reading all the new mail in (say) my "Business" mailbox, its new mail indicator count disappears, as it should.
If I then click on my "Family" mailbox which might indicate 5 unread messages, the "Business" mailbox will then indicate 5 - it indicates whatever the unread number is in the mailbox I've just clicked on!
If I click back to "Business", Mail realises there are actually no unread messages and the count disappears again, but if I click back to "Family" it goes back up to 5 (or however many are unread in "Family" - or whichever mailbox I click on next.)
    Very odd.
