Mailbox is Corrupt in Several Ways...

Hi There,
I've been surfing the forum and can't find anyone with this exact set of problems.
Last night, I opened up mail and all of a sudden,
1. it's marking old emails (almost 80 at a time) as having been unread
2. all of the new emails downloaded on to this computer are gone (though the ones I imported from my old G4 are here)
3. In all of my smart boxes, I all of a sudden have LOTS of new emails many of which are also marked as Junk, even though they'd meet none of my "mark as junk" rules
4. I am unable to receive new email in one of my POP accounts. Sometimes. Though there sometimes is an indication that there's new mail (10 new messages) but when I click on it I get the message is not downloaded from the server, you need to take this account online...etc.
I'm not even sure where to start. Other than running disk utility...?
Please let me know if you need other info. to help me...
Thank you in advance for your time & advice.

Hi Carolyn.
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post, to let me see the names of the files and folders present at the root level of the Mail folder.
Before actually posting that information, you may edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you wish to keep private, e.g. you may replace any real username with "username" to hide your real email address if you wish; similarly, you may disguise any domain names you don't want to be revealed. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Now, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. With that folder open, repeat the process to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains. Again, you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private. Be careful to not alter any suffixes, though.
Finally, locate the account folders within ~/Library/Mail/ -- their name begins with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. For each account folder, repeat the process to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains.
Also, proceed as follows in case the file where rules are stored has become corrupt and it's wreaking havoc:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
3. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
The following steps are in case you want to continue using Mail while troubleshooting this. You may prefer to stop using it until I have a better understanding of what the problem is:
4. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
5. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
6. Go online again if you went offline in step 4.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

If you are using iCloud, quit the Mail app if it's open.
    Open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect Mail then re select it.
Relaunch the Mail app and try deleting mail.
If you aren't using iCloud. with the Mail app open, from the menu bar click Mailbox > Rebuild
    Then try deleting mail.

  • Two separate versions of the same file corrupted in different ways...

I was working on a Photoshop CS4 file last night that was created in CS4 and has only been opened on this machine in CS4. I saved the file and closed Photoshop. When I open the file today, all my layers are gone, flattened into one Background layer, and the image looks like colored TV static. On top of that, the separate, older version of this file with a different name (created earlier in the week on the same machine in the same CS4) will not open at all - I get the error message, "Could not complete your request because the file is empty" and the file size has mysteriously shrunk to 76 KB from 20+ MB. What happened?! I'm guessing these files are corrupted beyond recovery, but why and how did this happen? Has anyone had this or a similar problem? I want to know how to prevent this from happening in the future. Please help! Thank you. =)

    Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.
Same issue, new question - don't ask me why I did this, but while both Photoshop and the now corrupted file were open, I changed the name of the folder containing the file, then continued to save the open version of the file without first closing it and reopening it from the newly renamed folder. Could this have caused both files in that folder to become corrupted in different ways? The other file that gives me the "file is empty" error was not open at the time, but it was in that folder. I'm thinking maybe by changing the path to the files while Photoshop was running, that could have triggered this. ?? I have 3 1TB internal drives raided to read as 1 drive, so I'm really hoping that one of these disks is not dying on me as you suggested. I was also backing up an external drive using BackBlaze when this all occurred - any possible connection? How can I find out if one of my three raided drives (and which one) might be going bad?
    Thanks!!

You need to delete your current hotmail account set up on your iphone.
Once this has done click 'Add Account' and select the new 'outlook.com' tab.
Set up your hotmail account again from scratch and this will then allow you to select how many weeks/months of emails you sync to your phone.
Im not sure if anyone else had a similar problem to me prior to iOS 7, but if i deleted an email from my hotmail account on my iphone - it wouldnt sync with my actual hotmail account. So when i logged in online all the emails I had deleted on my phone would still be showing as unread.
But by setting the account up as above, they now sync perfectly.
    Well for me anyway

Did you try to connect in recovery mode and restore without using the latest backup?
Recovery mode and  How to back up your data and set up as a new device
If setting up as new device does not work, you'll have to get it serviced or looked at by visiting an Apple Store.
Did you try to remove the ipsw firmware file and restore, to make iTunes download a new copy from Apple?
    Those files are located here:
Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw)
iTunes uses "ipsw" files to restore your iPod or iPhone. If those files are unusable, then try deleting them, renaming them, or moving the file to a different directory. This will cause iTunes to download a new copy of the IPSW. When a restore issue is specific to a user, it is likely due to an unusable .ipsw file. If removing the .ipsw file does not resolve a user-specific restore issue, then the issue is caused by other user-specific security software settings or iTunes preferences. Creating a new user will also cause new .ipsw restore files to be downloaded in the new user. You can find the ".ipsw" files in these locations:
    Mac OS X
    iPhone
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    iPad
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates
    iPod touch
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
Note: The tilde "~" represents your Home directory.
    Windows 7 and Vista

  • ITunes Library corrupted in weird way, how do I correct or rebuild?

For the record, I'm running iTunes 8.2. I have 27K+ tracks total. All of my CD rips are ripped twice, one for Lossless for home use and the second as 256K AAC for iPod/iPhone use. My tracks sit on my home Leopard Server, but the iTunes library is on a local machine (Mac Mini 2009).
Several point releases ago (probably in iTunes 6 or 7), iTunes had a problem where certain tracks got ripped from CDs as protected tracks (.m4b). I didn't realize it until l started doing an inventory of my library (purchased from iTunes Store). Over time, I had deleted many of the protected tracks (reripping them to .m4a format) but many of them were still files (.m4b) on the server. I ended up manually deleting all of those files recently. Best I can tell, all the tracked that search as "protected" in my library are songs purchased from the iTunes Store but not yet converted to unprotected AAC. (about 70 tracks).
But those "phantom" protected tracks still show up in weird ways. First, they were incorporated into playlists over time so I have that editing to do. But they also still show up in Smart Playlists, as if they are still listed in the library somewhere. Also, they show up in shared library functions, like if one of my laptops is sharing the main library, or even with third party apps like Simplify Media.
My theory is that the iTunes Music Library still lists these files but its only used for stuff like Smart Playlists and sharing. If this is the case, how do I excise the bad data from the library? If I do a rebuild (dragging the XML file to the desktop), will the references to the bad data just end up in a new XML file (this seems to be the case in every major iTunes update in recent months). If I rebuild without it and do a reimport of the files, what happens to my iPods, two iPhones and all their data/apps?
    Thanks

The iMac 500 doesn't have a DVD drive, and I don't have a firewire cable to hook it up to the 800 in Target Disk mode.
Anyway, I am wondering if it has something to do with my network layout? The iMac 800 is on a different router than the iMac 500. This doesn't interfere with normal network operations - but does iTunes intentionally block this to prevent sharing outside one's own network? If so, isn't there something that can be installed on one or both of the computers to get around that?

Anytime i plug a charger into my iphone . It vibrates , How doI stop this. I've tried several ways

No way to completely stop it.  When you plug in the power cord, it will chime, or it will vibrate (if the mute switch is on), but the device is designed to one of the other.  I suppose it is the designers way of making sure that you know your device is properly connected and has switched over to external power.  At this point in time, that feature cannot be disabled.

  • Corrupted playlist -- any way to recover my music?

Well, Spotify has corrupted my current primary playlist. It seems scrambled with play list entries deleted at different places. The last couple entries don't even have an "added" date anymore and are not in the right "date added" order because of this. Is there any way to recover an earlier edition of my playlist "test2" ? Note that this corruption happened right around the same time Spotify added a new playlist to my account without my permission -- the music advertisement "discover weekly". If I cannot rely on playlists being kept intact and my music collection being changeable only by me, it seems like there is no reason to use Spotify anymore. Edit: The corruption may be related to my use of an old Spotify client. I see with the latest client, that the obviously corrupted entries are not present. However, I don't know if this is really the fully intact original playlist (there's almost 2000 items in this playlist). So I really don't trust Spotify anymore. Playlists should never get damaged and Spotify corporate should not be adding any playlists to my music collection without my explicit permission.

    Hi ,
Playlists getting corrupted due to you using an old client should not be happening. But lets try to get you back to your playlists. It is actually possible to recover a playlists but that only counts if it's deleted in it's entirety, you can find that feature here.
Unfortunately, as a user, you only have the option to restore entire playlists. If you want specific songs to be restored, you'll have to get in contact with the staff via an online contact form; if you get a no-reply, just reply and it will be send to a staff member.

  • Mailbox gets corrupt

Does anybody else encounter frequent problems with corrupted mailboxes in Mail3? I'm not sure that this is the only situation which creates the problem here, but I have quite some time the following happening
    - An junk mail is moved by a filter to a IMAP folder
    - All mails in this folder look fine
    - I set the mail manually to junk
    - my filter automatically removes the junk mail from the IMAP folder to the local junk folder
    - the mail PREVIOUS to the junk mail is showing up corrupted (often without header, sometimes disappearing at all)
    - Rebuilding the IMAP mailbox fixes the corrupt mail
I'm not 100% sure this is limited to IMAP folders, but it looks like a bug in the IMAP support. Any other experiences like that?

  • I have tried several ways to delete the cookies listed in options and nothing works to get rid of them.

I have tried all of the methods to delete the cookies that are suggested on your support site. I have tried them if the selection in Options is for cookies allowed and with cookies not allowed. Also with 3rd party cookies allowed and not allowed. Normally, I have it set at cookies allowed but 3rd party cookies not allowed.
I have tried CCleaner, Euslings Cleaner, Auglogics Cleaner, Wise Cleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, and WinPatrol, plus deleting the temp files in Windows. All that software cleans out cookies. I also have Spyblaster set to protect against hundreds of tracking cookies. It was SuperAntiSpyware that brought the problem to my attention in the first place. It just started doing it approximately a few weeks ago but only the passed several days have I been working hard to get those cookies deleted. There must be a couple hundred of them. I did manage to delete about 5 or 6 of them but the others won't budge. I want to clean them all at and start from scratch and monitor them on a daily basis. I don't want most of them. SuperAntiSpyware claims it deletes them but when I go to Options in the browser they are still there. SuperAntiSpyware claims the cookies are there every time I run the program before shutting down the computer.
I just added that Troubleshooter and looked at information. I'm sorry but I'm not understanding anything. I'm not that computer savvy.

You may have installed an extension that adds so called opt-out cookies to Firefox.<br />
Such opt-out cookies are send instead of the normal cookies and you can't remove such opt-out cookies unless you disable or uninstall the extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

  • Mailboxes/index corruption?

MacBookAir OSX 10.5.8 Mail: on opening generates error msg "There is a problem saving information about your mailboxes. It may take a while to determine the problme. If you know this is a temporary problem, click Quit and then open Mail again". Options are "Quit" and "Quit and Rebuild Index". Either selection generates a protracted SBBOD; if Mail indeed eventually quits, subsequent relaunch gives the same scenario.
Mail syncs with iPhone 3G & MobileMe.
    Backup via TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.
Now what? Mail unusable, Mac itself unusable once Mail launched, another Mac disaster moment.

Let the thing run in SBBOD paralysis mode for 3 hours. Up pops a message "kill Mail, will re-import all your messages on restart". Had to force quit to kill. Relaunch - by George it did so. Took forever. Fixed itself. Weird.

  • Can't open a file.  It may be corrupted? Any way to rescue all or part of the project?

With all the updates FCPX has undergone and the constant updating of my libraries I seem to have lost the ability to edit a previous project which is now critical to me.
    What happens is:
I locate the event in the library
I click on the project (so that it will load it in the timeline)
I get the drop down window saying "Loading 'name of project' into the timeline"
That's it.  It never gets past this.  FCPX crashes.  Only a force quit will bring it back.
I'm wondering if there is any way to bring it back, or at least rescue some or most of the project.
Anyone out there who can help me, I would be SOOO grateful.
    Thanks

Do you remember whether you had gone inside the library bundle and either moved or modified any of the files stored in that event?
I suggest starting with the ;library backups folder. The FCP X version on 3/2104 was using the current Library model and so you should have library backups that were created automatically when you first worked on your project. The default location is in Movies/Final Cut Backups, Double-click any of them to see whether the project will load correctly.
