Mailbox won't go on sidebar to where dragged

I have my mailboxes numbered and titled, and in an order for me. Now, when I create a new mailbox, it either ends up near the top of the list or at the bottom. I drag it to where I want it, but it will not stay.

First thing that comes to mind is just go to your main library in iTunes and make sure there's a check mark in all of the boxes that appear to the left of each song title. If they're unchecked iTunes will stop after each song.
To fix this, go to the top toolbar in iTunes and select Edit>Select All>then right click on the selection and choose "Check All". This should replace your checkmarks.

• Firefox was working on my new iMac but then, after switching on recently, won't connect to the web – whereas Safari has no problem.

Hi
I bought an iMac a week ago and installed Firefox via Safari. It worked fine for a while but, after a recently switching on, it won't connect to the web whereas Safari has no problems.
I've tried following the Firefox Help, looking into the iMac firewall, but still no luck.
I've no idea whether related or not but yesterday I had a system glitch where the iMac stated no wi-fi was installed and only connected via a physical lead to my house router. Also, there was no sound output via Safari. However, after booting up today all seems well – apart from Firefox still not working. It loads the start page but can't access the web.
I have Little Snitch running, and wonder if that's the culprit... but it's working fine with Safari, seemingly.
(Finally, how do I stop a dialogue box appearing on start-up saying that "To open “X” you need a Java runtime. Would you like to install one now?)
Any ideas anyone?
Cheers

On the wireless networks that your Mac has had trouble connecting to, do you know which Wireless Security type (WEP, WPA, or WPA2) is being used?
If it is WEP, one of the problems is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP. In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa. You may find the following Apple Support article helpful.

Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?
As far as System Requirements go, they are the same for WIN 8 and WIN 8.1
Sympton:
Windows 8.1 Installation DVD loads for some time, no circle of dots, then PC reboots
with quick flash of six lines or so of white text (on black backgound) @ 106 seconds
Needed to use Smart Phone video camera to capture
Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button ...
Error Code:0x000000C4
Parameters:
0x000...91
0x000... F

0x00000000000000000
0x00000000000000001
Presumably message is intended for frozen PC, hence 'hold down power button'
In this case it flashes and re-boots
Windows 8.1 Image loads quickly, flash and reboots PC, having corrupted boot entry
(thankfully not other entries in Boot Manager situated on Dell System Reserved Partition)
PC Desktops affected:
Dimension 5000 - shipped JAN'05
RAM 4GB
Intel Pentium 4 640 3.20Ghz 64bit NX enabled
ATI Radeon HD 6450
Dimension 5150c/XPS 200 -shipped MAR'05
RAM 3GB
Intel Pentium D 820 2.80Ghz 64bit NX enabled
Intel 82945G WDDM 1.0
Both the above PC's Install and run Windows 8 without a hiccup
Another 'ancient' machine, but unaffected:
Precision 490 Desktop - shipped OCT'07
RAM 4GB
2 x XEON 5365 3.0Ghz
ATI HD 6450 (Now HD 7750)
All 8.0 & 8.1 clean Installs and Upgrades on this platform had no problems
Hope some of you can throw some light on this. What does WIN 8.1 do in the boot
process that WIN 8 does not?
And if anybody has encounterd this before...
Note to multi booters - keep or reinstall Dell or other System Reserved partition (PRI,Active)
EasyBCD/Windows Boot Manager held on this partition (eg. 350MB)
If it gets corrupted, you can Restore it, rather than Gigabytes of 1st Primary O/S
Also, it will solve a lot of problems, when manipulating/adding/backing up/restoring O/S's
That's it, happy computing...

Fellow user from St. Louis, Missouri pointed in the right direction. I'm grateful
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Running upgrade assistant (going to Store rejects CPU, but no details)
Results in:
X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support LAHF/SAHF.
X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support PrefetchW.
There are at least three Processor requirements that M'soft does not list for WIN 8.1
and it's fairly well documented, if you ask the right question, eg.:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2058683/new-windows-8-1-requirements-strand-some-users-on-windows-8.html
So that's it, exclusion by 'stealth' - at least M'soft told you that processor required NX - Execute Disable Bit
for Windows 8
For Intel units, look out for 'VT-x. Have a processor on the way, but will Motherboard pass CMPXCHG16b test?
AND PrefetchW AND LAHF/SAHF
Windows 8 support ends 2015, that means people who bought it will have had 2 years use
WIN 8.1 Upgrade/Update (sic) is free, but costly if it won't run on your machine
So, those many people who decried Windows 8 and stuck to WIN 7, were right after all
Early supporters of WIN 8, have been 'betrayed'
'Minimum Requirement for Processor 1Ghz - don't make me laugh! (Presumably for Phone 8)
M'soft have a 'more info' link on System Requirements page, so why not spell it out...
Otherwise it looks like a PR/Cosmetic exersize

• Files on one of my icloud email mailboxes won't open. No files in the mailbox will open

Files in one of my icloud mailboxes won't open. No files in this mailbox open, but other icloud mailboxes do. Any ideas?

Thank you. I tried the soft reboot again, and the home button has been working fine this whole time. I have tried deleting the email acct from the settings and the mail app still opens only empty frames. I have a screen shot of it, but don't know how to post it here to be able to show what exactly is happening.
The mail app will open. I can see the area that usually shows the messages themselves. I can also see the area that usually displays all the accts. Both these areas are completely blank. The search bar is showing on the left hand side, and up on the top right, the download button, reply, delete and compose buttons are showing. At the very bottom left the refresh button is showing. The app sits like that for about 20 seconds and then automatically closes. None of the buttons are responsive. I cannot see any of the email accounts I have in the app (3, usually but 2 at the moment since deleting the acct that seemed to have caused this problem).
I have force-stopped the app, shut down and restarted the iPad, and rebooted the iPad. None of these have helped.

I found a post with this solution that worked for me - .Do a backup, then download ibackupbot. It lets you look into the contents of that backup. Look in system files>mediadomain>library>sms>attachments. I found a ton of huge files related to long deleted texts. ibackupbot let me delete all that old crap. I then restored the phone with that now modifec backup and Bingo! freed up 9 GB. No problems.
But note, if you are not technically inclined you probaly don't want to be digging around and deleting back up files. You delete the wrong thing and you could jack up your phone badly. Be careful.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• How Do I Change the Mailbox Font Size in the Sidebar?

In an earlier preview build of Lion, I was able to change the size of the Mailbox font used in the left sidebar to view more content in the column, but I don't remember what I did to change it. The Mail/Preferences/Fonts & Colors pane no longer has a Mailbox font option.
Does anyone know how to change the Mail sidebar font size in Lion?

I'm not sure what you're responding to. Bob H. above pointed out a clear bug in changing the Mail list font when he went to Mail/Preferences/Fonts & Colors and changed the font setting for the Mail list (second column), and it didn't work.
My issue was the font size in the first column (sidebar), which is not controlled in the Mail app, but by going to System Preferences/General and checking the box for changing the sidebar font size. This checkbox also controls the font size for Finder (Desktop) windows sidebars (left column), where hard drives, other volumes, user Documents folders, and the like are listed. This does work perfectly for me.
I have no other suggestions for you, except for perhaps trying removing the com.apple.finder.plist file located in the ~/Library/Preferences folder, which you can access by holding down the option key while selecting the Go menu at the top of the screen. This controls the Finder window settings you have previously selected, and may be corrupted. Simply move it to the Desktop for temporary safekeeping, then if it simply copied it, vice moving it out of the folder, right click on the file in the folder to move it to the Trash (you may have to authenticate). This will force the Finder to recreate a default version of the file, which you can then remodify to your liking. If that works, Trash the copy you moved to the Desktop. If not, put it back in the folder to restore your prior settings.
Good luck.

• Added Mailboxes Don't Appear in Sidebar?

I added several new mailboxes through the "+" symbol at the bottom of the sidebar box. They aren't showing up in the side bar under the "On My Mac" header where I placed them.
When I go into Finder and follow User/Library/Mailboxes/ they show up along with the "deleted" "sent" and "outbox" folders just as they should.
If I try to go back and re-add them, it get an error message that they already exist (as confirmed by looking in the library folder)
So ... WHY aren't they showing up in the sidebar? I looked through the various "view" and "preferences" settings and don't see anything which looks like it may be filtering them out...

Sounds like it should work. In your place I guess I'd, first of all, try adding folders using the menu structure instead of the +. If that didn't work, then start working through the normal steps for when AW misbehaves.

• CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
(1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
(2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
Thank you for your help,
Andy

Hi Andy, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] Everything elmac says is helpful and correct.
2] An upgrade to 10.4.8 with the 10.4.8 Combo from blue apple / Mac OS Updates might fix your hiccup. If you don't want .8 then .7 combo.
3] [OT] For some minor security issues, it is better to surf the internet in a standard account. If you are surfing in an admin account then here is how to switch and maintain prefs.
Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +
and make it have admin priviledges. Be sure to remember short name and password since you will be asked to "authenticate" when running in your standard account. This new account is often called "test" in these forums.
Once that is done convert your regular account to standard.
Good Luck, JP

• Mailbox won't import

My bosses mail is acting goofy. He was trying to move some messages from the inbox to a folder and it seemed to go but wouldn't. I had him restart the mail and that didn't help. Had him restart the computer and that didn't help either. He created a new folder with a different name and copied what he was trying to bring from the inbox and it worked for that mailbox. Then he tried to copy all the items that were in the original mailbox and it seemed to work then all the mail in both mailboxes disappeared. I have his account running on an emac here so the mail he has going to other mailboxes will still re-route and not all of his mail goes into the inbox on his iPhone. The affected mailbox is also empty on the emac. On both computers the rebuild mailbox is grayed out. I have his account here on my laptop in a separate login. The affected mailbox was intact here so I archived it and tried to import into both his laptop and the emac. I get messages that it is not a valid mailbox. Tried both as Mail for Mac X and tried mbox imports. It fails on both. The messages are there, I can read them. I can even read them on the emac from the mbox file but it just won't go into the mail. Also did a reconstruct on the mail server. He's running a Powerbook with 10.5.2.

For the import function to work, you have to select the folder containing the mailbox, not the mailbox itself. Also, if you're using an IMAP account (rather than POP), the import function chokes on that because of extensions. I got it to work by changing the mailbox's extension from ".imapmbox" to ".mbox". Hope this helps.

• Lion Mail: Mailboxes won't stay in the order I want.

Lion Mail: I drag my mailboxes to reorder them, which works. However, when I quit and relaunch Mail, the mailboxes revert to the original order. And it's not alphabetical; nor is it the order of the accounts preference window.
Also, the order in the Inbox does not match the order in the lower section of the sidebar. (My iCloud account is first in the Inbox, but last in the sidebar.)

Hi.
The problem probably was in incorrect entry in prefs.js.
I had the same issue and that was in my config:
user_pref("browser.search.useDBForOrder", '''"true"'''); -bad
user_pref("browser.search.useDBForOrder", '''true'''); - good
The wrong value set search engines always in alphabetical order.
Some plugin responsible for context searching, has change this entry to wrong value.

• Mailbox won't open and appears white

I recently got an imac desktop and configured mail to synch over dot mac to a macbook pro. The mail works fine on the macbook pro, but on the imac 4 out of about 20 of my mailboxes are white rather than blue, and while they indicate unread messages, clicking on them displays no messages, and the option to rebuild the mailbox is grayed out.
Any suggestions as to what could be wrong with the mailboxes and how to fix it?

I recently encountered the same problem on a Mac Mini that had been working normally and without incident for more than a year. Now, MobileMe is not successfully syncing, and Mail.app won't provide any useful search results (always now: "Found 0 matches for search). The "rebuild" feature is always grayed-out.

• Mailbox won't send until I quit & reopen

Ok some very strange mailbox behavior a month ago - mail kept randomly picking up old emails from my trash & other folders and redepositing them into my inbox, and also would randomly resend some of them to users. No idea how or why that started... cleared off all downloads on my computer, reset my Safari, checked every setting in my mailboxes more than a dozen times and saw nothing unusual. That stopped after a few days... however, ever since the only way mail will send is if I hit send, then quit mail, then reopen. If I don't quit, the composed msg to send totally disappears - not in outbox, not in sent, not still open to view. As soon as I reopen the mail app, it immediately sends without me doing anything at all. ???? Help, I'm so not a techie and this is my first Mac so I'm lost!

Hi fijikaren, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I see a couple of things to try...
This can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't help, open System Preferences>Network... do you get a "Your Settings have been changed" warning?
