Mailbox won't send until I quit & reopen

Ok some very strange mailbox behavior a month ago - mail kept randomly picking up old emails from my trash & other folders and redepositing them into my inbox, and also would randomly resend some of them to users. No idea how or why that started... cleared off all downloads on my computer, reset my Safari, checked every setting in my mailboxes more than a dozen times and saw nothing unusual. That stopped after a few days... however, ever since the only way mail will send is if I hit send, then quit mail, then reopen. If I don't quit, the composed msg to send totally disappears - not in outbox, not in sent, not still open to view. As soon as I reopen the mail app, it immediately sends without me doing anything at all. ???? Help, I'm so not a techie and this is my first Mac so I'm lost!

Hi fijikaren, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I see a couple of things to try...
This can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't help, open System Preferences>Network... do you get a "Your Settings have been changed" warning?

  • I click on a video & it causes safari to stall untill i quit & reopen it

I have an Intel MacMini 1.66 running 10.4.10 and Safari 2.0.4. If I click on a video (mpeg or other, doesnt seem to matter), Safari wont load another page or download anything until i quit it & reopen Safari. If i download the video it will download fine but if i try to view it by clicking on it, Safari wont do anything after that, it wont even load a webpage. I have to relaunch Safari every time this happens.
I have flip4mac intalled and think its something to do with it because the page is probably trying to view the video with the flip4mac pluggin.
This happened right after i did the software updates, about 4 of them, including the 10.4.10 intel, audio update, security update, itunes & quicktime as well.
Tried resetting router and cable modem, repairing permissions, resetting safari, emptying cache and cookies. Any ideas?

Your above posted system details list shows two Flash plugins, one a very old Flash 9 version that you should uninstall.
    # Shockwave Flash 11.6 r602
    # Shockwave Flash 9.0 r45
You can set the plugin.expose_full_path pref to true on the about:config page to see the full path of enabled installed plugins on the about:plugins page.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:plugins
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers via the navigator.plugins object, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.
    See "Manually uninstalling a plugin":

  • Message won't send unless i quit and restart mail

I compose the message and hit send and i get the turning wheel symbol and it just keeps on turning. If I quit mail and then re-start mail, the "out box" messages send immediately. What's going on?

I've tried every possible solution for this problem -- cleared cache, reinstalled Windows, updated Firefox and Flash, even installed the beta 64-bit version of Flash -- NOTHING helps. Since no one seems to have any ideas about this problem, I'm throwing in the towel on Firefox. The problem has never occurred in IE.

  • Exchange 2010 - Resource Mailbox won't send external notification email

Exchange 2010 with SP1. These mailboxes used to respond to outside booking requests, when we were running Exchange 2007.  I've verified that -ProcessExternalMeetingMessages is set to $true.  The mailbox responds to internal requests with an email.
All users are allowed to make "Resource In-Policy Requests".
I've tried booking from an email address that was setup as a Contact in Exchange - still no luck.
    Any ideas?

Could you share what settings did you use for SMTP connectors?
    I have tried:
    Authentication – Externally Secured
    Permission Group – Exchange Servers
I can send emails via these connectors, but Room Mailbox still deletes requests from external sender.
Both organizations have Exch 2010 sp3 RU6, and AD forest 2008R2 level.

    Hi,
According to your description,I'm very confused.
What did you do when the mail get stuck?Open server manager on hub transport server or EMC ?
What's your problem now? a mail flow issue or a permission issue?
    Please give us more details.

My phone receives emails where ever I am but won't send until I get home. Says "rejected by the server". Using Time Warner. Any suggestions?

You might be using an invalid email address that you are sending to or your mail settings for the account are wrong.  Check the address and I would delete the email account and reenter it

I spent a lot of time trying to find a solution before buying.  I did not try the launch terminal solution....
I will check back so I can find out what to do should this happen again.
More possible bad news.  If you had followed what fane_j had asked you to do you might have found out it wasn't microsoft's fault for your problem and wouldn't have had to spend $150.  Because while you may have an Office that works, fane_j was not suggesting a solution but probing for a trojan (google "flashback trojan") that has been crashing powerpc code which is what Office 2004 is.
So if you do have the trojan, while you can run a version of Office, the trojan may still be in your system since installing a version of Office isn't going to remove it.  So I'll make another request.  Launch Terminal (in your Utilities folder) and copy/paste the following line into the terminal window and hit return:
    defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment
If you see anything other than a "does not exist" error message you almost certainly do have the trojan and post the results in this thread.
The choice is yours.  You can ignore this and take the risk.  Or do what has been requested.

Like any electronic item, it sometimes gets inexplicably balled up. The reset is no different than rebooting a computer that is acting hinky. If you don't have to do it often, then it is not anythign to worry about. (I know - not the kind of tech talk you were probably expecting, but the words selected are about as scientific as you can get concerning this type of weirdness....)

  • Mail freezes, won't send

I know there have been several threads recently about Mail not sending, but my problem did not seem to match up with anyone else's, so perhaps I'm alone in this or there's some simple solution I've overlooked.
I have three Gmail IMAP accounts running through Mail; all have behaved fine until recently. Now several (related?) problems are occurring:
    1) After mail has been open for a minute or so, it does not receive new messages. New messages ONLY arrive upon opening Mail. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    2) Attempting to view/sort/search mailboxes fails after a minute or so of Mail being open. (i.e. When I am in mailbox #1 and I attempt a search or click on mailbox #2, Mail freezes and won't display a list of messages or the body of a message. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    3) When I'm composing an outgoing message, if I've taken more than a minute or two, Mail won't send the message. I click on Send and nothing happens. The window showing my draft disappears, but the "Sent" Mailbox never changes to "Sending...", the message is not saved to Drafts and is never sent. Essentially it is lost (You can imagine how much fun this has been). Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
Any thoughts on what's happening here? On an unrelated(?) note, I've had the same issue others have discussed, wherein Safari is not retaining cookies. Safari has also been freezing my screen and mouse several times a day, necessitating a hard restart. Don't know if this is related; one problem at a time.

Anybody? Any thoughts? Maybe a starting point...?

Iphone 5 - I am trying to delete message threads and once I do, I go to text someone else and it won't send. HELP? I just don't want those messages on my phone anymore. I have tried to restart my phone but when I do, the "deleted" threads show back up on my phone. I use iOS 7.1.

    Hello Makayla,
It sounds like you're deleted message threads keep coming back after you restart the devie. I recommend starting by quitting all the running apps on your phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes and then restore it as a new device and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send

I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send. They all receive ok but when I send I get a message "sender address rejected by server" and " Authentification required" The passwords are still intact

Check the Mail settings for your account, especially the SMTP (outgoing) address, type of authentication, and entry of the proper email username and password. You can do this when you select the account then under the outgoing mail server use the dropdown menu to select the Edit option. Select your outgoing configuration in the list. Check the settings below, then click on the Advanced tab and check those settings.
If all is OK, then I suggest your reinstall Mavericks:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • Changing accounts, won't send email

I created a new Mail account, but when I try to send email I get a message,
"The server response was: 5.7.1 Authentication Required
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."
The problem with this is it only lists my old smtp server. I have the new server info entered correctly. I have made the old account inactive. I can't send mail through either account.
I am switching to Verizon Fiber Optic (FiOS).

If you created a new email account on your Mac's Mail.app client program, then does the new username match a valid network mailserver login username at that ISP's mail server, that you have specified in Mail.app's account preferences for this new account? It sounds like the ISP's mail server may not be recognizing your username as a valid user on their mailserver so they are not allowing you to send mail through their smtp server.
Either that, or are you trying to send/retrieve mail through this new mail account when your IP address wasn't assigned by that mail server's network? Sometimes, ISPs won't let you access their mailservers if your computer's WAN IP address does not belong to their network. As an example, the local university won't let me send mail from my home computer because my computer's WAN IP address is not part of the university's subnet. They do let me retrieve mail via SSL, but they won't let me send it, SSL or not, username/password authentication or not. If I'm not physically attached to their subnet, then no can do -- only webmail available. (They do allow secure shell access from "foreign" IP addresses so there is a way around that to where I can send and receive mail from my university account, but I have to start Terminal and establish a ssh session with port tunneling before I can launch Mail, and my mail server prefs are set up in what might be considered an unorthodox manner).

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • TS3899 wrote and email but it won't send or cancel-screen frozen

wrote and e-mail but it won't send or cancel-screen is frozen.  Every other function works

If the reset does not work, try quitting mail completely and then restart the iPad and see if you can cancel the email or send it.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
