Mailboxes appear empty from time to time

Dear all -
I have a recurring issue with my mailboxes in Apple Mail, and I wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing.
From time to time, all my mailboxes will suddenly appear as though they are empty. Or rather, the number of unread messages, if any, will correctly appear next to the mailbox name in the side panel, but clicking on the mailbox shows nothing in the message list panel. It's totally blank. This happens for all mailboxes in all accounts - Inbox, Sent, local or server folders, POP and IMAP accounts, and all RSS feeds.
Restarting Mail will correct it, but is there anything else that might work? As far as plugins go, I have Letterbox (currently disabled) and MailTags (v2.2.3; latest version). While I could troubleshoot the plugins by disabling them, it could be days before the problem recurs, so it's tricky to be sure what's causing it.
Thanks!
Matt

Hi Matt,
I think most plugins, if problematic, need to be fully uninstalled, and not merely disabled.
Very odd for this to happen, but cure itself with merely a restart, etc.

  • Music directory appears empty, but it's

    I have a Creative Zen 32 GB.
    Firmware version .2.0
Contains about 7 GB of music
I've had it for about 3 weeks, and it worked great until last night.
I listened to it for awhile yesterday afternoon, and then went to add some new music yesterday evening and ran into problems.
I opened Windows Explorer to 'drag and drop' the new mp3's and the Music directory appeared empty from within WE. I've added new music this way previously, and I was able to see all the subfolders of mp3's on my Zen; it looked just like browsing folders with? WE on my computer.
I unplugged the Zen, and verified that the music was still in the player, and it was.
I plugged it back in, and tried the Zen Media Explorer. I ran into the same problem. The music directory appeared empty when I tried to browse it from the ZME.
I went back to Windows Explorer and tried dragging and dropping a folder of new songs into the Music directory.
It acted like it was copying them, but afterwords, WE still read the directory as empty.
I unplugged the player and checked the music list, and the new songs were on there.
I thought maybe it was my home computer (Dell Dimension 8250 running Windows XP w/ SP2), so I tried my work computer today (Dell Optiplex 755 running Windows XP w/ SP2), and got exactly the same results. Tried both Windows Explorer and Zen Media Explorer, and neither one would view the contents of the Music directory on the Zen.
I downloaded the Recovery Tool and ran it. It upgraded the firmware, but that was all it did. I went back into Windows Explorer and Zen Media Explorer and there was no change. They both still show the directory as empty.
It seems like the problem is within the Zen player, since I've run into the same behavior on two different computers.
Has anyone out there run into a problem like this?

    Hi,
(first of all: sorry for my bad English!)
I have the same exact problem, the music files stills in the Player (with the Folder Icon too) and the Zen still them correctly, but in the Media Explorer the Music Directory Is Empty.
Plus all the Videos and DataFiles (no multimedia files) have totally deleted from the player!!! (how it is possible?)
In this scenario (files in the Player but not showed in the Zen Music Folder) i've add some new files (with the Creative Media Explorer), the player correctly puts these new files in the list togheter with existing files, but in the Media Explorer -> Music Folder i can see only the new added files.
If i select Properties from Windows it tells me the right free space available (even if i couldn't see the files).
There is something i can do instead of Format the Player? (i've update the firmware but didn't change the situation)
Zen 8GB fw:.2.0e, no SD in the Player.
    Thanks
    Vahes?

  • After restoring contacts from time machine, all groups are empty

I had to restore a backup of my address book folder from time machine. Library/Application Support/Address Book, I also removed deleted the com.apple.addressbook.plist files.  When I open address book, all the contacts and group names show, but the groups are now empty when I click on them.  Any thoughts?

Quit Contacts or Address Book if it’s running. If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.
A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
Relaunch the application and test. If there’s no improvement, quit and put back the item you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • How to retrieve accidentally deleted mailboxes from Time Machine?

I recently did a reinstall and, winding up with two Mail programs, trashed the one I was "sure" was the new, bogus one. Unfortunately, it was my original Mail program, including the mailboxes with letters from Swedish relatives, important addresses, etc. Going back into Time Machine I found strange-looking references to the boxes but couldn't figure out out to make any of it readable. I've come across advertisements for Disk Warrior, Tech Tool, and several other programs, and came close to buying them all at once before cooling down a bit. Any suggestions about avenues worth pursuing would be appreciated. (Or even if it's likely to be a lost cause.)
    Cap

There's the Mail program and there are stored 'mailboxes' with the data in them. Deleting a version of the Mail program shouldn't affect the latter. If that's all you've done then your mail data should be where it has always been. My guess (and I'm not an expert in Mail) is that you have ended up with a different version of Mail to the one you've been using and it doesn't store its mailboxes in the same way so isn't finding your data. I would suggest asking the question of the Mail forum and give them the version number of the Mail program you have and any info you have about the version you deleted.

Where do I find this library?

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

  • Empty iTunes, then Restore Some Playlists from Time Machine?

My MacBook Pro is full, mainly because of the massive collection of music. Everything is backed up on Time Machine. I want to reduce my iTunes library by about 50% to regain some capacity. Can I delete my entire iTunes library off the MacBook, then reinstall only the playlists that I want from Time Machine? What's the best/safest way to do this?

+I just restored my MBP from Time Machine, everything went fine. But I feel my MBR start up much slower than before. So now I want to do a clean install Leopard.+
Wait on the erase and install. Launch Disk Utility which is in the Applications > Utilities folder and Verify your disk and repair permissions. If Verify shows any errors boot from the Leopard install DVD by holding the "c" key down until the spinning gear appears. Pick a language and choose Utilities > Disk and run Repair until no errors appear. Repair permissions.
If that doesn't work try resetting the PRAM which quite often fixes slow boot times.

+Would like to ask you guys who experiences in Time Machine that after installing Leopard, I want to restore some applications from Time Machine such as MS office, Wow, Photoshop...Will they fully function if I restore from TM?+
I don't know about Wow but Photoshop and MS Office install too many files in too many places for it to be practical to restore them from Time Machine backups after doing an erase and install. You need to reinstall those from the original disks for those applications.

  • Emails in restored mailbox from Time Machine are not visible

I have an IMAC 5.1 with OSX 10.6.8. When I restored a mailbox using Time Machine, the mailbox appears in Apple Mail however no emails are visible even though they are present in the folder in library/mail/mailboxes in Finder. Any suggestions on how I can make the emails visible?
    Thanks

I managed to find the solution.  In Mail under Mailbox in the header there is a Rebuild button.  I pressed it and my emails are now visible.

  • I manually deleted back-ups from Time Machine and now I can't empty the trash

I manually deleted back-ups from Time Machine and now I can't empty the trash.

Using Finder (deleting Time Machine backups) to manage Time Machine files is a mistake. The remedy is somewhat easy, but you will lose all the files on that TM drive.
If there is nothing elese on the Time Machine drive, try reformatting the drive with Disk Utility. This will effectively remove the files from that drive from the trash. If you have files on this drive, temporarily copy the files to another drive, then reformat the TM drive.

  • Installed new harddrive and I am trying to restore from time machine external back up. I restarted the computer and held the Command key and the R and the restore utility does not appear. what can I do

I installed new hard drive and I am trying to restore from time machine external back up. I restarted the computer and held the Command key and the R and the restore utility does not appear. what can I do

Command + R keys are for Macbooks running Lion and Mountian Lion only. ( i could be wrong on this)
you have a couple of options:
Do a clean install of Snow Leopard via Install DVD.
Clone your old hard drive to your new hard drive via Carbon Copy Cloner
Or click on the link below to give you a better idea.
Hope you get it sorted out.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

  • I can't enter the group (chain) of emails from time to time using iPhone OS MailBox software.

I can't enter the group (chain) of emails from time to time using iPhone OS MailBox software. It's ok with stand-alone emails but email chains are existing unlogically. I just press on the chain (with double ">>" sign) and nothing is done. Also I can't enter one of my email account, but I think this issue can be corresponded with the previous one. your help is appreciated!

    Carolyn,
I think your TV might be a rear projection model, correct? Those types of TVs inherently have overscan built into them as part of their optical design. The TV should have some picture SIZE settings that affect how much overscan is present, and some settings may even get rid of it altogether with the result there might be a small black border instead.
Don't worry about changing TV settings. Settings like this are tied to a specific input. So if you make these types of changes while the TV is passing the mini's video through to the screen, those changes will only apply to the mini. When you switch to other inputs, like a cable box, etc., the old settings should still be intact and unchanged.

  • I recovered photos from time capsule files show but are empty

I have a macbook pro that needed a new harddrive. I backed up iphoto and put it on my new harddrive from time capsule. The photo files show up and the correct number of images but no images show up. How can I retrieve them?

We are not iPhoto experts here......they are over the iPhoto support area.
So, your best bet is to  ask over there......iPhoto
In general, you need to restore the entire iPhoto library from the Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule. It is located in your Pictures folder.
Once the iPhoto library has been restored to the Pictures folder on your Mac, you will need to "point" iPhoto at that library by holding down the option key on your Mac while you click to start the iPhoto application on the dock.
These are general guidelines, not specific instructions, which should come from the iPhoto experts.

  • IPhoto: Photos appear as "exclamation" after restore from Time Machine

My hard drive was recently having issues so Apple replaced it for free. I have a 2TB Time Capsule and restored the new hard drive using Time Machine. It seemed to go without issue. However, when going into iPhoto, with some of the Events (seems to be the more recent ones), I get a big exclamation icon instead of the image. The thumbnails seem fine for I can browse the Events just fine. It is when I click a thumbnail that I get the big exclamation. Does this mean that my master image is somehow gone. Mind you, I could see the images just fine before getting the new hard drive. I was have some sort of seek issues on the old one so Apple decided to replace it however the seek issues didn't affect iPhoto as I could use it and see all the images just fine. But now on the new hard drive with the restore from Time Machine, I can't see the images.
    Any ideas?

Ah, yes, that is a PITA. Unfortunately, you're not the first.
All I can think is, iPhoto may have been open at the wrong time during a backup.
The iPhoto library is a rather unusual critter. It's actually a "package" (a special folder that's treated like a single file for most purposes), with all sorts of cross-linking and indexing and there's no telling what all (at least by us mere mortals). When iPhoto is open, apparently there can be some things updated on disk, but others still in memory, so a backup of what's on disk would be out of sync and not usable if you restored it. Time Machine usually seems to handle this ok, but I'm not convinced it always does.
Time Machine really ought to send a message if it can't back it up. I don't have a problem with it continuing, and backing-up everything else, since you might not be around, but it sure ought to tell you so you can be sure to close iPhoto and run another backup to be sure. But it doesn't.
Please feel free to provide your opinion here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
