Mailboxes offline

When my computer comes out of sleep mode, my mailboxes are offline and I can't get them back online.  The only way I can get my mail is to close Mail and re-open it.  Then it retrieves my mail and all accounts are online.  I have 5 different mail accounts.  When I looked into connection doctor, it shows two were online but that is not reflected in my mail window.  Any ideas?

I had downloaded a test program to see if it would be good as an IWeb replacement.
May I ask what program that was?

  • Apple Mail 4.3 Taking Mailbox Offline doesn't do anything

In Apple Mail 4.3 when i right click and select Take Mailbox Offline, the mailbox becomes gray, and a lightning bolt indicating that it is not connected to the imap server shows up, however i still continue to get new messages in its inbox.
(If you're wondering, i have an admin email address that log messages get sent to, and I only want to check it when the server is down, otherwise it just fills my inbox)
Has anyone else experienced this? It worked before i upgraded apple mail

  • All mailboxes offline after idle time (with network trace info)

When I return to my computer after some time away—enough time that it has presumably been asleep—all my email accounts are offline. Clicking the triangle-bang icon and "Take all accounts online" does nothing.
Opening connection doctor, all the outgoing servers (SMTP) are green. All the incoming servers (IMAP, including both gmail and iCloud) are red.
Every account is configured to use IMAP/SSL on port 993 for incoming Mail. I can telnet to imap.gmail.com on port 993 and get a connection.
As root in a Terminal window, I set up a tcpdump packet capture on the correct interface for all traffic to or from TCP port 993, then I click "Check Again" in the connection doctor. No packets are sent to any IMAP server, with one exception: the (non-google, non-apple) account that is configured as "deactivated" is tested.
I started a new tcpdump, this time capture packets with "dst net 74", that being the network the gmail servers are on. Clicking "Check Again" again, again nothing. I am not looking at the wrong network interface. There are not existing connections to port 993 in "netstat -anf inet." My subnet does not support IPv6, and the Mac has only the link-local IPv6 address configured.
And always, quitting Mail and starting it again brings the accounts back online, and their TCP traffic on port 993 is visible with tcpdump.

More information: When all the mailboxes go offline, there's data on the read queue of several of the TCP sockets. It stays there indefinitely, not read by the threads that have the sockets open.

  • Apple Mail 'Mailbox Offline'

I am using three mail boxes on my computers.
Sometimes I find one mailbox (always the same) has jumped to ‘offline’ by itself. To read the contents of this box I have to switch it to ‘online’.
How can I make the box permanently in the ‘online’-state?
Is there a way to select this condition?

  • Outlook 2013 cached mode "mail to keep offline" - does this setting affect archive mailbox or Office 365 hosted archive mailbox?

I have an Exchange 2013 Hybrid environment with Exchange 2007 in coexistance mode as well as Office 365. We are hosting the majority of our Exchange accounts on-premise (migrating them from 2007), and most (soon to be ALL) Archive mailboxes in Office 365.
I have through Group policy set the policy "Select Cached Exchange Mode sync settings for new profiles" to 6 months. This works fine for the contents of the regular mailbox, but the setting is NOT being set at all for the Online Archive mailbox,
whether or not it is hosted on-premise or in Office 365. Is this the expected behavior?
Another question: Is it possible to have the regular mailbox in cached mode and the archive in Online mode or vice versa?

    Hi,
The key to your questions is: Archive mailboxes are online only, they cannot be cached for offline viewing, so you can keep your regular mailboxes offline(In Cached Exchange Mode) or Online, but cannot switch Archive mailboxes to Offline.
The whole idea of the archive mailbox is to keep your "online" mailbox with recent / important mails small and accessible on and offline. The archive mailbox is intended to store older / less important emails which are not neccessary to access immediately.
One important reason of archive mailbox is to prevent the growth of offline files.

  • New User Mailbox not showing up in GAL - Created wrong?

I have a strange issue that is causing me angst and making me argue with my network manager.  Here's the lowdown.  Please shed some light on it if you can.
Every place I have worked prior to my current company I would do the following steps to create a new user (new employee).  In AD I would
copy an existing user with the same/similar permissions, distro list membership, etc...  Then go into
EMC and create a new mailbox for an existing user
and link it to the new AD object I had just created.  This always worked for me.  Here it doesn't.  When I do it that way, the new user mailbox does not get added to the GAL.  If you go to
All Users they show up.  I have read several articles about using cached mode and if I turn it off the user will show up.  Unfortunately most of our employees are in the field for long periods of time so we need to run in cached mode.
The way the network manager wants them created (and this way works) is to create a new user mailbox for a
new user in EMC which also creates the AD object.  Then I have to go back to AD and manually add the user to permissions groups, distro lists, add profile settings, etc...  Very tedious and manual process.
Can someone help me understand why doing it my way, which I have done for years on other networks, is not working here?  Since we are using cached mode do I have to create the user object and mailbox the way he does it?

I believe the way you are doing it and the way he is doing it is doing exactly the same thing as far as when it shows up in the GAL.  The problem sounds like exactly what you said in that you are using cached mode which uses an Offline Address Book
(OAB).  If you look in EMC under Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Offline Address Book, you will see the update schedule.  What happens is when you create the account it shows up in the address book right away however it only shows up in the OAB
when that updater runs.  Even after that is done, the outlook client needs to go out and download the OAB file, which happens 24 hours from the time it last downloaded the OAB.  I'm not sure if there is a fix for your problem as it appears to be
by design.  Perhaps your old company may have been running in online mode?  You may want to look at
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841273/en-us for more details.
    Q1: What is cached mode?
A1: Cached mode is the new default configuration for Outlook. It provides an experience that is similar to the offline configuration in earlier versions of Outlook. When you are running in cached mode, your Exchange mailbox is synchronized to a local
file (an .ost file), and the offline address list from your Exchange computer is synchronized to a collection of files (.oab files) on your client computer. Outlook directly accesses the .ost file and the .oab files on your hard disk instead of communicating
directly with your server or servers. Therefore, network communication between Outlook and Exchange is significantly reduced.
Q2: Why does cached mode generate an offline address book?
A2: The offline address book  contains a set of all the properties of a user (such as e-mail addresses and names) that Outlook requires. With an offline address book, Outlook does not have to connect to the global catalog to resolve names, nor
does it have to open a person’s details record. Instead, Outlook easily obtains this information from the local offline address book.
Q5: How frequently is the offline address book updated on the Outlook client?
A5: If left constantly running, Outlook in cached mode automatically updates the offline address book on the client every 24 hours. The 24-hour time period is measured from the time that the offline address book was last downloaded successfully. For
example, if you complete an offline address book download at 09:00 today, Outlook will start the offline address book download the next day at approximately 09:00. Therefore, different people will receive updates at different, random times.
Note The default setting on the Exchange computer is to generate an offline address book differential file every morning at 04:00. For a change that is made in Active Directory to reach the client computer, the following events must occur:
The change must be picked up by the Exchange computer that generates the offline address book files. This can take several hours. At worst, it can take 24 hours. This variable will be referred to as "x."
The Outlook clients must download the offline address book updates every 24 hours. This update can take several hours. At  worst, it can take 24 hours. This variable will be referred to as "y."
The update reaches the client machines x+y hours later. It would be rare for a client to ever experience a 48-hour delay or more unless there were some Active Directory or public folder replication issues.

  • Unable to download offline address book

Upgraded from Exchange 2003 to 2010 and ran through the steps upgrading the OAB to the new format.
I have configured Outlook Anywhere which works but when I attempt to download the offline address book I get the following error:-"Task Microsoft Exchange Server reported error (0x800401f): The operation failed."
These are the steps I have already taken:-
Turn off SSL for the OAB directory in IIS
Created a new OAB on Exchange 2010 and waited overnight to allow for changes.
When I then tried to select the new OAB, this does not appear in the dropdown list on the client either.
    Can anyone advise?

    check out this...it will work
    1
On the CAS server/s stop the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution Service. You can do this from the command prompt with
    'net stop MSExchangeFDS'
    2
Untick 'Enable Web-based Distribution' of OAB: From EMC-->Org-->Mailbox-->Offline Address Book-->double click on your Offline Address Book (normally called 'Default Offline Address Book')-->'Distribution' Tab-->Untick
'Enable Web-based Distribution' then press Apply. You can also do it from
EMS with the command 'Get-OfflineAddressBook | Set-OfflineAddressBook -VirtualDirectories:$Null'. This should of resulted in the
<Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB\<GUID> folder being removed from your CAS server/s
    3
Open EMS and do "Get-OABVirtualDirectory | Remove-OABVirtualDirectory-confirm:$false". This will remove the OAB Virtual Directory from all of your CAS server/s. So use the -WebSiteName parameter if you have more than 1 CAS
server and you only want to perform this reset on 1 server.
    4
    Delete/Rename the <Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB folder on the CAS server/s
    5
    Delete/rename the <Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchangeOAB
folder on the OAB Generating server (usually a mailbox server).
    6
Open EMS and do "New-OABVirtualDirectory -Server <CASServerName>".
This will create the OAB Virtual Directory on the CAS server and will create the  <Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB
folder on the CAS server too. Repeat this step for each of your CAS servers. If you only have one CAS server then you do not need the
Server parameter. This will also set the InternalURL value of the
OABVirtualDirectory to "http://<CASfqdn>/OAB" which is fine if you don't want to use SSL internally to download the OAB (this is the default Exchange setting). WARNING: SBS seems to default to HTTPs on the OAB
VD because of the Bindings on the SBS Web Applications web site, so I suggest you use HTTPs, or if you really want to use HTTP then look at the Bindings and which HostNames will allow you to connect to the SBS Web Applications web site on port 80. on SBS use
'New-OABVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "SBS  Web Applications"' To ensure the OAB VD is created under the correct web site.
    7
Open EMS and do 'Get-OfflineAddressBook | Set-OfflineAddressBook -VirtualDirectories "<CASServerName>\oab (default web site)"'. On a SBS server the (default web site) is normally (SBS Web Applications), so open IIS and confirm
what the web site name is that contains your Exchange Virtual Directories and then use that value instead of (default web site) if you need to. You can do this step in EMC as you may find it easier, especially if you are running multiple CAS servers.
    8
Open EMS and do "Get-OfflineAddressBook | Update-OfflineAddressBook". This will recreate and populate the
<Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchangeOAB folder on the OAB Generating server (usually a mailbox server) and it will also share the folder out as
    ExchangeOAB.
    9
On the CAS server/s start the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution Service. You can do this from the command prompt with "net start MSExchangeFDS". This will copy the
    <Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchangeOAB\<GUID> folder on the OAB Generating server to the  <Drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\OAB
    folder on the CAS server/s.
Recycle the MSExchangeAutodiscoverAppPool Application Pool in IIS, so autodiscover picks up the new OAB URLs. Then restart Outlook so it reads the new Autodiscover information about the OAB URLs and test Downloading the Offline Address
Book from an internal Outlook 2007/2010 client and it should now work.

  • Exchange 2010 - Offline Address Book and Global Address List Issue!

I don't think I'm going crazy but cant find out why this is happening?
When I search the Address book in cached mode (OAB) in outlook for "Jackie W"
I get a number of users which include "Jackie W***"
but some are "Jackie K***" or "Jackie B***"
but their Office is set to "Westminster"
But this is the strange part when I search on the address book with Cached mode disabled (GAL) I only get users with Surnames begging with
"W" so only "Jackie W***" show up and if I just type in "Westminster" I get users form that location! but not a mix like on the OAB! Also when using the OAB if I type
"Jackie West" it brings up the Jackie from Westminster but this dose not happen when using the GAL because there is no
"Jackie West" in the Address book?
To my knowledge the OAB is just a Copy of the GAL that updates every 24 hours, and should be the same (give or take a few starters and leavers in the last 24 hours) and should pull up the same information when searching is this correct or am I going crazy!

    Hi MattE,
Does it happen for each Outlook profile you have, from every user account which is on Cached Mode.
A.If not then I believe OAB copy is either corrupted or Out of date.
Checking it on OWA would confirm the actual GAL data.(Similar to Online Exchange)
Client side update runs by default at Startup and every 24hrs , if skipped it will wait for next day or manual update.
1.In Outlook 2010, select the File tab in the upper left corner, then Download Address Book from the Account Settings drop down menu.
Outlook 2007 users should select Tools from Outlooks uppermost menu, then Send/Receive and Download Address Book from the Tools drop down menus.
2.The Offline Address Book window will appear. Make sure the following options are selected:
##De-check the Download changes since last Send/Receive option
##Make sure Full Details is selected
##Make sure the \Global Address List is selected from the Choose address book drop down menu

B.If yes, then there is a issue with OAB generation, that needs further troubleshooting depending on the distribution structure used Public Folder based or EWS.
    • Try following:
EMC > Organization configuration > Mailbox > Offline address book.
Then right click on "Default offline addressbook" and select properies.
Click on "Distribution" tab, and untick "Enable public folder distribution". Click "Apply" and "OK"
Update the Address Book. Let replication finish.
Now go back to same location and tick "Enable public folder distribution" back again. Click "Apply" and "OK".

  • Send/receive hang on "Offline address book Connecting to Microsoft Exchange" and will never finish?

When I hit send/receive on a few clients the process will hang on "Offline address book Connecting to Microsoft Exchange" and will never finish? These same user can long on the OWA and send/receive just fine. The problem is that while it's hanging it can't go out and look for new email. Any thoughts?

    I had similar problem.
This actually arose due to the fact I had mistakenly set the Default web Site directory with a HTTP redirect which applied to all subfolders including OAB.
I did then rectify this by going into individual subfolders and unchecking Http Redirect from each sub folder, however unknowingly  it created/modified a webconfig file under the OAB virtual directory. (you can explore it to see the
    file there)
If you test your OAB url (for people with the issue), which is : http(s)://servername/oab/[code]/oab.xml you will get Error 500.
Each time Outlook 2007 was trying to connect to get OAB, it was trying to read that webconfig file.
I fixed this by changing the permissions on that webconfig file to allow everyone and the above error was done, and also my Outlook 2007 was downloading the OAB again!
Now if the above fix did not fix your problem, you can temporarily effectively disable OAB by unticking Web Distribution of OAB and Public Folder Distribution in EMC under Organisation/Mailbox/Offline Address Book. Users will be able to do a
send/reiceve without any errors/issues. However, if a new contact/user is added to your AD with exchange attributes, the clients will not be able to see this. I'm guessing if cached mode was also not used, issues would also occur if they tried using the GAL.
    acidack, you are a lifesaver.
I looked at the other webconfig files in the internet directories and noticed they all had 'Authenticated Users' with read permissions while the OAB one did not.  Adding this group with read permissions solved the problem; Outlook 2007
users are no longer frozen on the 'Offline address book connecting to Microsoft Exchange" message.
What caused this? I'm not sure.  I was messing with the web settings trying to redirect people to OWA. Something I did must have caused this file to be re-created without the needed permissions.
Acidack and AndrewB, You are both live savers.  After all these years, your solution to this problem is still spot on.

  • Annoying - Mail goes offline for no particular reason

I've seen enough in these postings to know that there is a bug in Mail. My situation is that I have four e-mail accounts that come into Mail through one cable provider. I constantly have problems with the little triangles saying "Offline". I used to think that there was a conflict with Entourage (which I use for a fifth work account) but now it is happening when I don't have Entourage running. I can quit Mail and re-open that fixes it for awhile. SOmetimes it doesn't happen for three days, and then sometimes four times in an hour (like today which is why I'm writing this)
I do have a wireless connection. Could that be part of it?
    THanks
    PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am having a recent spate of the same activity... am running OS 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11. I too am connecting via a wireless Lynksys router on an open network which has NOT been changed in any way.
First time this arose arose was just 4 days ago, and what seemed to 'fix' it for a time was to take mailboxes offline (even though Mail indicated they were all still online) and then go back online again.
Then two days ago, and doing that fix only worked after several attempts over a period of hours.
Today, it is resisting all attempts.
When I do a mail check, the mail client's 'progress area' (the grey horizontal band) quickly reports connecting to the server, or even the authenticating step, but then stops and 'chimes' (that there is no new mail found). Checking webmail, of course, I see tons of mail waiting for me to come collect it.
I wonder if we have a bug here, given our synchronistic experience of symptoms. Also wondering if Mail is mad at me for having so much stuff in there...

I try to register my computer and the little wheel just spins and spins...what prompted this is my Mac Mail on my computer no longer works..I can still get mail from iCloud but it's a pain. My MacMail acct. shows Mailboxes 'offline' and imap server rejects my password...help? Thanks!

Relax everyone……..all the services of the iCloud and iTunes are currently down…….
You can check its status at :
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/systemstatus/
Apple is probably doing some work on both the iCloud and on iTunes as both are currently down..........it is probably because of the upgrading they are doing that has to be done for the soon to be released Mountain Lion OS......

  • REQ: Fix the *&^%$#@ CS6 Character window's font list!

I have better things to do with my time than click-and-hold on that stupid little arrow and wait a few hours for it to snail-crawl through my hundreds of fonts to the one I want.
InDesign and Photoshop both have proper scroll bars in their versions of the Character window. Why the *&^%$#@! doesn't Illustrator?

It means that those mailboxes are offline.  If you didn't put those mailboxes offline, yourself, then it's usually indicative of a problem connecting to the mail server.

  • Mail crashes when connecting to IMAP accounts

    Hi all,
I have mail set up to check 5 different accounts. One is a POP account and 4 are IMAP accounts (2 gmail, 2 other mail providers).
Initially I had no problems at all with this setup. Mail had mirrored all 4 IMAP accounts and was downloading new messages without a problem. One day, however, something went awry and every time I took one of my Gmail accounts online, Mail would crash. I figured I'd leave that account offline and keep checking that gmail account the regular way.
This worked for a while. More recently though Mail has started crashing when any of my IMAP accounts are taken online. If I leave the 4 IMAP accounts offline and only the POP account online, it does not crash.
Here is what I've tried so far:
    Repair permissions/disk.
Erase and Install Tiger (up to 10.4.11)
Moving .mbox files to the desktop and letting mail download the inboxes again (not ideal, the largest inbox is 800MB and a gmail one)
Removing the accounts and starting from scratch.
Nothing seemed to change a thing, Mail now crashes on startup if the IMAP accounts are online (if I take that Mailbox offline, Mail works fine).
I checked the crash reports (which I have been reporting to Apple like crazy, not that they seem to have noticed), and it always seems to be Thread 0 that crashes. Here are the last two crashed Thread 0s:

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have no idea whether this will help or if it's even what resolved my same recent imap problems that involved primarily *GMAIL imaps*, but it seems to be helping.
First, make sure all imap accounts are dragged up to the very top of the inbox/accounts list: *imaps above pops*
(Any IMAP accounts that have multiple folders should be at the top of the imaps).
Second, go into Mail > preference > accounts > [ each imap account ] > Advanced Tab
Above the box for the Port is *_IMAP Path Prefix_:* Type in INBOX
(reminder: If it's gmail, make sure your port is 993 and Use SSL is checked.)
Hope this helps. so far this is what seems to have helped w/mine (i have other problems such as zero results in my smart mailboxes--they no longer work).
I also have a different imap account not google/gmail and I don't use INBOX in the path prefix on that one and it has always worked just fine; the problems started with gmail imaps.
i'll be interested to know if it helps anyone else.
(Note: I manually synchronize the gmail IMAP accounts because having the auto synch box checked also seems to cause problems but your experience may vary)
    cheers!
now if anyone can tell me why after all these years apple has not fixed the lookupd / dns / network bugs that result in this (among other similar failures)

  • Some mail messages not showing content after upgrade to Yosemite

I have just upgraded my system software to Yosemite and Have found that some of my mail messages are not displaying their content. I have closed and re-opened Mail and also taken all mailboxes offline and back online but the problem still persists.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

    Hi Illaass,
I've already rebuilt the mailbox several times. I have run disk utility, started my masc in 'safe mode', reset the PRAM and finally re-installed Yosemite again. This didn't solve the problem. I started my mac in 'safe mode' one more time today and than restarted my mac and the problem appears to have been sorted. However, I'm not sure if the problem will re-occur if I shut down my mac tonight and restart in the morning1
