MailBoxes Order - switching to Apple Mail

Dear Apple experts,
I recently switched from Outlook for Mac to Apple Mail on my Macbook.
I really like mail, though it doesnt appesr to have all the functions of Outlook; but on of my accounts Gmail the mail boxes order has changed so it starts with Z mailboxe at the top and descends to A mail boxes at the bottom e.g. Z-A
I can figure out how to change it so A mail boxes are at the top and it decsend to Z  e.g. A-Z
Can you advise plesae?
Thank you
Mark Geraghty

What I think you're looking for is sort by Subject, then select Z-A or A-Z depending on your preference. There's a tiny drop down at the top of the message list you can click the modify this. I just tried it myself!

  • Delaying when switching between apple mail and safari

    just on mavericks.
it more or less looks and feel ok but...
when I switch between apple mail and safari, everything "freezes" for some seconds (up to 30).
    anyone similar experiences?
what could be the cause of that?
    its really disturbing.

I am a little puzzled by the libraries and switching between the libraries. My personal computer has the majority of the movies and content that would be transfered to the appletv. I chose to only select a minimal amount of content (of movies and tv shows, music via playlists) so there would be space left that would hold photos. Also, i just want to send over only what I want to view (manual synch) If I switch to my Kids library, it streams all the content well (movies & tv shows)(which is fine and streams well) If I switch back to my library, it shows every movie, every tv show, hundreds of music playlist that I did not choose to see. (stream mode) The only fix is to reboot the computer, and all is well. anyone experience this issue?

  • How do I change the way multiple mailboxes are displayed in Apple Mail sidebar?

I have set up Apple mail with seperate personal and work mailboxes. I would like to be able to view and work with them separately, so I click on, say, my personal account and then get a submenu of inbox, sent, trash etc just for that account. The current view I have seems to be the opposite, i.e. I chose 'sent' and THEN have to select the account. Any ideas?

Thanks very much for your reply sberman. It wasn't quite what I was after. What I would (ideally) like is to click on the "personal mailbox" triangle and for the inbox/sent/drafts etc for only that mailbox to appear.
To try and put it another way: at the moment I have to click on 'inbox' then find the mailbox I am interested in, e.g. 'personal', whereas, ideally I would click on 'personal' then have an option to click on 'inbox' (or 'sent' or 'drafts' etc) as a submenu of that.
Do you know if this possible?

  • Mailbox content disappears in Apple Mail 4.6

I have an iMac running OSX v 10.6.8 and Apple Mail v 4.6.
I have multiple email accounts in Mail, all are IMAP accounts through a third party email provider, and all are through the same provider. Everything worked just fine until recently.
Now, at random, all content from all inboxes but the first does not show. I know the content is there, as I can see it on my iPhone. Also, the mailbox message count (i.e. 35 messages/1 unread) doesn't show as empty; for example when empty it usually shows (0 messages/0 unread), this information is simply blank.
I can temporarily get my messages to show, by sending myself a blank message from one account to the hidden account, however at random they will disappear again.
The mailbox is relatively low on content, only a hundred messages or so...I've got others on my other machines with more than 14000 and no issues like this.
The OSX version cannot be upgraded due to software compatiblity issues that cannot be avoided.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

    James, try this...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Open Mail, highlight the affected account, in Mail's Mailbox menu item choose Rebuild, when done restart & see of it's fixed.

I have an eMac that was upgraded to Mac OS X v. 10.5.8.  I need to get a new machine.  But I am using Eudora as my mail client and it can't be upgraded and will not work with later systems, so I am trying to switch to Apple Mail which I assume will be upgradable when I get the new system.  However, I can't get the mail to work even after using the cheat sheet which does not correspond exactly with what I see on the screen.  Can anyone help? • Apple Mail database size limit?

I recently screwed up my Entourage database by allowing it to get too big and lost a lot of info. I switched to Apple mail, which works fine, but am worried about same thing happening coz its getting big.
    1. Is there a limit to the size of this database.
    2. Is there any maintenance that needs to be done, like Entourage?

    Douglas,
Back in October, Allan Sampson responded to a similar question you poised, and included a link -- that discussion can still be found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=718074#718074
An article, to which Allan linked, suggested that individual mailboxes should be kept below 2 GB -- the totality of the database (all mailboxes) has no limit other than disk space on the computer.
Mail has the command to remove attachments, but leave the text of messages, as well. Hope this helps.
Erasure of deleted messages is a good idea, and as Allan mentioned, a command to Rebuild a mailbox is available -- Rebuild causes Mail to redo its table of contents info, and is probably a good idea to use on occasion.

  • Apple mail won't delete a message on the server but my iPhone will...

    Hello,
I have an iMac running the latest version of Snow Leopard, and use Apple Mail with an IMAP server. Recently, I noticed that when I try to delete a message on my apple mail, that it won't get deleted on the server or my iphone. However, if I do the reverse and delete the message on my iPhone, it gets removed from the server and apple mail.
I have setup Apple Mail as an IMAP account, and on the iphone Active Synch Exchange for the same account. I tried to switch the Apple Mail account to an exchange IMAP account, and it made no difference. Any ideas on how to address this problem - it is really annoying to have to delete the same message twice? Thanks!

    Hi ernie,
Thanks for the help. As for the mailbox preferce I have it set on move deleted to seperate folder (one week old).
Here's the strange part - i have 1 email, only 1 email that will not delete and that's in my inbox, now when i click on view "Show Deleted Message" is greyed out..
    http://i25.tinypic.com/33mx1et.png
I also have 1 email and only 1 email in my outbox that will not delete and when i click on view it shows "Show Deleted message".

so what do you think the problem may be?

  • How to Merge Eudora into Apple Mail?

Mac OS 10.5.8 is now obsolete. So I'm planning to upgrade to Lion 10.7.x.
Since Lion does not support Eudora, I must switch to some other email client. After many hours of research I have decided to switch to Apple Mail.
Unfortunately, the two popular conversion applications (Emailchemy and Eudora Mailbox Cleaner) appear no longer in existence.
Any good tips on how to merge Eudora into Apple Mail on OS 10.5.8 (so I can upgrade to Lion 10.7.x)?
    Thank you.
Scott "pulling his hair out" in Saint Louis

    Hi folks,
I just helped someone move 350k messages from a series of Eudora archives to Apple Mail.  Anyone who says they had great luck with Apple Mail directly importing their Eudora messages is either a liar or didn't notice (or care) that their dates were all messed up. So here are some notes.
First, Eudora Mailbox Cleaner only runs under 10.6 since it's PPC and requires Rosetta.  So you're gonna need a 10.6 or earlier mac (or virtual machine).
Second, After running Eudora Mailbox Cleaner, you need to poke Apple Mail into rebuilding all those mailboxes.  You can go Mailbox->Rebuild for each one if you only have a handful, but an alternative is to intentionally break (aka delete) Apple Mail's mailbox cache.  You can do this by deleting/renaming the file called 'Mailboxes' (IIRC, I don't have a 10.6 mac in front of me to double check).  Next time you open Apple Mail it will rebuild all your local mailboxes.
Third, Eudora Mailbox Cleaner will terminate if you throw it a particularly complex (or large group of mailboxes).  I assume it has something to do with the way it walks mailboxes.  You're going to want to break up any mail folder that has a number of large subfolders into multiple folders or imports. So for example, if you had the following structure:
    folder/
    folder/a (big)
    folder/b (big)
    folder/c (big)
Eudora mailbox cleaner will likely crash.  If you reparent your folder structure so it's something like this:
    folder/part1/a
    folder/part2/b
    folder/part3/c
This way no individual sub folder contains folders that exceed some magical threshold. I never figured out exactly how/why this happens, but if you put your big mailboxes each in their own folder, the import will usually just work.  You might also have to break up your import into smaller chunks.
A couple other things to note, Eudora allows pretty much anything in mailbox names including ~><*%$@&/\|` etc.  While most of these will continue to work fine in Apple Mail, it's in your best interest to rename them to something more normalized to steer clear of trouble.
As for Lion, I never successfully got Lion Mail to import mailboxes created by Eudora Mailbox Cleaner properly.  Either they wouldn't show up at all or they would show up nested with two copies of the mailbox, for example MailboxQQ had messages in it as well as subfolder MailboxQQ/Messages with a duplicate copy of the mail.
So for me, going from Eudora to Lion Apple Mail I had to do the following:
Eudora->Eudora Mailbox Cleaner->Apple Mail (on 10.6) then copy the files over to the Lion machine and let Apple Mail (on 10.7) import the 10.6 Apple Mail Mailboxes into it's new 'V2' mailbox format.
So good luck. A perfect migration is possible, it just takes some work.

  • Apple Mail Rules dont apply when mail is READ on other devices!

    Hi,
I use IMAP settings on Apple Mail (v4.5) and also check my emails on the iPhone (iPhone also set up with IMAP). However if i have read an email on the iPhone then when i switch my computer on the incoming Apple Mail Rule that applies to that sender does not seem to work. It keeps the mail within my Inbox and does not transfer the mail/message to the desired folder.
However, if the same sender sends me an email which i do not read on the iPhone and then switch my Apple Mail ON, then the mail is automatically transferred to the desired folder.
It looks like the problem is only with READ mail and not UNREAD mail.
Is there a fix for this? There seems to be a lot of people having the same issue and was wondering if there is any work around on this?
Would really appreciate any help from anyone on this.
    Regards,
    Jay
PS: I recently moved from Outlook 2011 on MAC to Apple Mail as i heard is a far superior mail application and works smoothly. So far everything about Apple Mail has been correct, it is a fantastic app, however this Rule problem is pretty basic and surprised that Apple still has not fixed this.

    Hi Glenn,
Many thanks for this. Unfortunately i dont have this facility on the server as we are using a simple opensource mail delivery and storage service, so the rules would have to be set up on the computer.
I was using Outlook 2011 and prior that was using Entourage 2008 and both worked well with the IMAP rules. Nothing was ommitted and everything READ or UNREAD was imported and the rules applied. It's only in Apple Mail that these rules dont seem to work.
Is there no other work around? No Apple Mail Add-Ins? I see quite a number of people complaining about the same problem and i'm surprise that Apple has not found a solution for this.
Anyway, thank you soo much for your reply. Much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jay

  • Show Apple Mail folders in iPad

I would like to know how to set up and show the various folders (Mailboxes) I have in Apple Mail. Th
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Ina

This isn't immediately obvious but if you can work through a few steps there's a solution. I use this all the time to enable my folders to be visible on my computer, on gmail and on my iPhone etc. Effectively we make gmail work a little more like a normal IMAP server.
    1. Open Gmail.com and go to Settings, then Labs.
    2. Find "Advanced IMAP Controls" and Enable it.
    3. Go into Labels (still in Settings) and observe a new setting 'Show in IMAP' beside some labels.
    4. Turn this ON for every label you want to see as a folder and OFF for all the others (eg 'All Mail', 'Spam' and others that you only want access to through webmail)
Now, here you have to be careful because you may want to keep an archive of all mail on gmail, but not necessarily on your iPad or computer. I can explain why we do the next step if you want, but that may not be what you want. This is just how I manage it so that email never gets completely deleted from gmail except if I go through the webmail interface.
    5. Create a new filter that will match every message, such as 'From' contains . (which is in every email address!)
    6. Click 'Next step' and then 'Apply the label' and select a new label, giving it a tiny name, such as | or . so it doesn't take up much space. Also apply to all existing conversations.
    7. Now go into the 'Labels' again and turn OFF 'Show in IMAP' for that label.
Hopefully that should be all you need to do to get the folders to show up in gmail. If you left All Mail in then you'd end up with duplicate copies of every message. Moving a message results in a label being deleted and a new one created. Deleting a message shouldn't delete the message completely if it has another label (such as the automatic one above) but will remove it from that folder.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Apple Mail forever fetching To Do from Lotus Notes IMAP server

The subject says it all. I have three lines in my Mail activity:
[To Do - <mailbox>] Updating cache directory
    Received 6 of 6 headers...
    [<mailbox>] Synchronizing with server
    Getting unread counts
    [<mailbox>] Communicating with server
    [Apple Mail To Do] Fetching
What I normally do just click the stop signs to cancel and then all is fine. I can continue to check mail and it will run normally until the next time it happens.
I know IMAP is a bit funky. This is a Lotus Notes server. My IMAP Path Prefix is blank. Everything works with this account. This is not a big deal, but it is slightly annoying.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Apple Mail > Preferences > Composing > Create notes and to dos in "On my Mac"
Then, delete all the old, completed to do items that may be connected to the IMAP account. Delete the to do folder on the IMAP account. Delete any associated Calendar in iCal. It seems to be gone now.

  • Apple mail font changes with mail encoding

Apple mail will change the font automatically with the encoding of the message.
This might not be shown on Apple Mail, but it does when recieved in Microsoft Ouotlook / Windows.
When I send in Western Latin 1. font is Calibri
Switch the mail encoding to UTF-8, Font becomes Times new roman.
if mail encoding is DBCS like Big-5, it start to switch the big-5 default font on Windows and it's ugly.
This is serious, the change of fonts is very unprofessional.
And we can't ask everyone in the world ot switch to Apple mail, most of working system are still in Outlook...

Ok, on further research it doesn't seem to be as simple as I thought. It's hard for me to fully check now, as I've installed Universal Mailer, but it seems as if this might only apply to mail with a pre-formatted signature.
I've pasted the relevant part of the html from an affected email below. For obvious reasons I've replaced most of the text with asterisks, but as you'll see, some of the text (in italics) is in Verdana (in this case the first two lines), and some (in bold) isn't specified, and appears in whatever default font I choose. (I've added line breaks for clarity.)

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.
