Main computer is it necessary

we have just one telephone socket in the house, so for the last few weeks ive had 20 meters of cable running through the house, every time i want to go online. i bought a wireless g router (wrt54gr)and a couple of net cards to get rid of those annoying cables and hook up anouther computer. i thought that if i plug the router into the modem (next to the phone socket) then it could transmit to the computers in the house, but the intructions tell me that i need to set up through a main computer witch seems to defeat the object. is there a way round this help wanted by someone very new to this. thanks up front

The instructions shows that it required one main computer for set up ....that is true but ..... later on you can disconnect that computer & leave the router connected to modem only ....
So the connection would be Modem connected to internet port of the router ..... from either 1-4 port another cable connected to back of computer .....
Try to configure it & let me know ....

Prioritizing traffic from "main" computer on LAN

My Current Setup

My main computer is connected to the router via a switch on eth0 and directly via a usb cable on eth1. Other computers on the LAN connect to the router via the switch.
The Problem
I need to shape traffic in such a way that priority is given to uploads from the main computer when other computers are uploading.* I do not always have the option of throttling the upload on the other systems and I do not want to impose any arbitrary limits on them. I simple want to make sure that all the necessary bandwidth is given to the main computer and whatever is leftover can be used for the other computers.
NOTE: I cannot shape traffic via the router. My ISP uses crippling firmware and I cannot bypass it.
The Plan
The main computer is not always on so I can't configure it to be an integral part of the network. I don't mind having to disconnect and reconnect a cable though so I suspect that I can disconnect the switch from the router and thus shape traffic from the other computers by passing it through the main computer:

This is where I need some help. I've looked through a lot of documentation but I'm still not sure how to set this up. I think I need to use proxy ARP (with iproute2) but I'm hoping that someone else can confirm this before I explore it further. I'm afraid that I'll waste time only to find that it was a false start and that I need to do it differently.
Can anyone with network configuration experience confirm that proxy ARP is the way to go? If not, what do you suggest?
I would also appreciate any links to relevant tutorials|guides|documentation. I wouldn't mind some simple examples either but I'm not asking anyone to do this for me. I just need to know that I'm on the right path.

*I'm only concerned about upload bandwidth right now because I'm on ADSL and download bandwidth is usually not an issue. I also expect that any solution for upload shaping will work for download shaping as well.

God no.... Proxy ARP is the most god awful creation ever created. The person who thought that was a good idea should be taken out the back and shot.
You want to create a bridge with eth0 and eth1 = br0 so they both act on the same Layer 2 (ie, your Main computer becomes a 2-port switch). This should get you going, you'll just have to hack out / modify the firewall parts to do the traffic prioritisation stuff:

How can I use home sharing? (main computer)

Well, I have a Windows PC and almost on my music is in Home Sharing with my sister (her computer is the main computer, I'm pretty sure) . When her computer is closed, the home sharing disapeers.
Is there anything I can do so that I can always have home sharing or move the music to my music folder? Something like that?

First, make sure you've got the home share set up on both computers, as per the following document:

Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.

Sorry but your iPhoto library is not on an iPad or iPod - you may have photos there (most likely low resolution copies) but not an iPhoto library - dying computers (along with software and human errors) are why you always must have a backup - now is the time to load it

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

You have to put a resolution 640 x 480 on your mac
and 1920 x 1080 on Sony TV.
After that, you have to go on menu of your TV and follow the steps:
ajustes > canais de entrada > controle de entradas
I know the names in portuguese.
But in english should be the same.
And set you PC from AUTO to "SEMPRE"
The TV is already set on AUTO (automatic)

There is only one solution. Each user must have their own separate user account. All of their respective data would be contained in their separate user accounts. This also means each will have a separate iTunes Library. If you all use the same third-party apps, then each will have to purchase their own copies under their own Apple IDs. Are you sure that if I use my windows log in rather than my husbands, then open itunes it won't delete all his hundreds of songs and overwrite with mine?

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. My main computer I have my itunes with died, I had all of my music there. I do have all music on an ipod nano but when I connect it to one of my other computers it wants to erase what is there, can I use the cloud to upload all my music from the nano?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

How to "In Effect" Turn Off Time Zone on iCal AND main computer

I am hopeful that this will help those of us who don't want to have any form of Time Zone on our computers or iCal. I read some of the other posts and see that it does not appear an option to completely turn off all Time Zones on the computer and iCal.
What I am thinking about doing, is trying to "Trick" my computer & ical into thinking it doesn't ever go anywhere and thus leaves all of my appointments where they are - no matter what time zone I am actually in.
I hope those of you more knowledgable can please help me see if this will work, or not?
I am hoping that by leaving Time Zone Support turned "Off" in iCal and leaving my computer at a 'manual' Mountain Time Zone (meaning I don't have it set to have it automatically set to the right time - I will set it manually), my appointments will stay put (not move around 8 hours when I go to Italy &/or back to the US)?
I can set the time "manually" to the correct time when I am in either US or Italy so my computer will reflect the current time, but still be set in Mountain Time Zone? Will the alarms still work on calendar events?
The only drawback I can see so far, is that all of the times on emails are messed up (i.e., off by 8 hours) when I am actually in Italy because I still do have the main computer time zone set as Mountain Time - US.
I am willing to live with this (I think?) if it leaves my appointment times alone.

I am being driven crazy by, what I suppose to be, the same issue. I have used the Time Zone Support feature to somewhat limited success.
I frequently travel between different time zones am confused on how to set up iCal to show the times of my events *in the place where they occur*. When I am in LA and I have a concert in Chicago later in the week, I don't need to know what time the Chicago concert is in LA.
Syncing my Treo 650 adds another problem. Publishing the calendars adds another as the published times are not listed in the time zone where the events occur but rather what time zone my laptop is in.
This seems simple to me, but I may be missing something. Here are my wishes:
1. As I travel with my MacBook Pro that I can change my Date and Time preference to actually list the time zone where I am. Easily done...but...
2. That the event times in iCal are unaffected by the changing of the Date and Time preference adjustment...(after all the concert in Chicago is still at 3pm on Friday, even if I am in Tokyo on Monday. I need to know the time of the Chicago concert in Chicago time, not Tokyo.)
3. That calendars that I publish list the time in the place where the event occurs. I have students that need to know their lesson times but are consantly confused because the published times reflect whatever time zone I happen to be in...not where the lessons take place.
4. That when I sync my Treo the event times automatically adjust to whichever time zome the treo picks up off the network time server. When I land in a new time zone, I need to know the the rehearsal starts at 10, in the city where I have just arrived.
I have recently switched to the Apple PIM apps from Entourage...where, if I never changed the time zone, everything was fine.
