Main diffs FCP vs FC express?

I've been using FCP and FC Studio for a few years for my personal work, and with the economy the way it is, I can't swing the upgrade to FC studio... Express is more doable, and I wonder what the biggest differences I'll see will be?
Anyone here use both who can give me the nutshell of what's different between the two?
mainly, I am not into plug-ins or toys; I like simple edits, and what I think are called L cuts...like to be able to edit a clip's sound independently from its video...

where I'm going with my work..I'm not sure what you mean...how am I distributing it? what's my goal?
What I am doin is that I'm working on a couple of films. they are my personal work. they are not intended for television, necessarily. I may want to burn them to DVD. I may be interested in screening them in real theatres, or distributing them over the web.
my personal style of video editing is about making simple cuts...sometimes I want the sound moved from where it was in the original clip to some other location..some times I want video from one clip over the sound of another..but I am basically about telling my story with edits and not with effects and plug ins.
FCP 5 does everything I could hope for and more..I've yet to learn all of what it can do. it's a great tool...easy to use, robust...things make sense just as in OS X.
my editing needs are beyond what iMovie offers. I believe that Express has the editing tools, but it won't allow me to make my own frame size, for example...or select from more than the 3 codecs you mention.
So, I guess I am more of a FCP user and needer than a person for whom express is plenty. Be nice if I could just pinch a couple more things that FCP does and insert them into FCE, but it's just not that way.
I may be that kind of user who doesn't fit neatly into this hole or that with respect to a couple of things I've mentioned above re: what I do in FCP.

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express? I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.

PNP/PNPCE - Both are Logical Databases for PA Module
In PNPCE - CE stands for Concurrent Employment.
The differnces are:
The PNPCE logical database supports the evaluation of HR master data. It includes the functions of the PNP logical database and offers additional evaluation options. Therefore, you should use the PNPCE logical database instead of the PNP logical database for all new developments.
The enhanced functionality of PNPCE in comparison to PNP essentially concerns the evaluation of Concurrent Employment, that is the possibility to group evaluate several assignments/personnel numbers of a person. The new events 'GET PERSON' and 'GET GROUP' as well as an enhanced syntax for the INFOTYPES statement (addition AS PERSON TABLE) for the procurement of infotype data enable you to use the new functionality. The use of these new functions is optional. You can run a PNPCE report that does not use the new events and the addition for the INFOTYPES statement in a PNP-compatible session. Since the PNPCE also has an improved selection screen, each report benefits from this even if the report does not use the functions for evaluating Concurrent Employment.

I've set up a network using 3 Airports:
Main: UFO connected to the internet
Relay: Airport Extreme
Remote: Airport Express
My question is with regard to the WDS setting for my "REMOTE" unit. Which do I set as the "MAIN" in the WDS Panel: 1) The Main Unit Connected to the internet; or 2) The Relay Unit (which is much closer to the Remote Unit)?

FCP to Avid Express HD 5.0 Workflow

I am about to start on the edit of a new project.
My editor uses Avid Express HD 5.0 and I use FCP Pro latest version.
The source is HDV. It is a five camera synchronised shoot of a rock concert.
I would normally use multiclip in FCP to line everything up and take it from there.
Is it best to let an assistant do the line up in Avid rather than FCP ?
Once the project is edited in Avid I want to do sub edits/captions/titles and prep for DVD in Final Cut Studio so what's the best way of taking the project back ?
Can the tapes be captured once and then files reused etc. etc.
Any tips or advice welcome.

Hi there,
as an avid & fcp editor I would suggest the following workflow. I am assuming you are the director/producer possibly online editor since you said "my editor uses avid xpress pro hd".
If he is more comfortable using avid for this then let him. He will be far more productive on a system he knows and trusts, and lets face it Avid do know what they are doing, they have been in the broadcast market for years now so they can be trusted!
.digitise the project into avid in HDV native
.let him cut the project as he/you see fit and take it to picture lock.
.when it is locked play it out to tape (in HDV mode on the avid)
.digitise that tape into your FCP finishing suite, overlaying the edl export from avid onto a seperate video layer so you can see where the cuts are(or use automatic duck) and finsh the project there.
but please DO NOT go back and re digitise your tapes. HDV is appalling at giving any kind of sensible t/code output that you can replicate in a conform or re-digitise situation IMO (check the forums) so stay inside your NLE and squirt it out native!

FCP to FCE(express)

I have a movie done in FCP sitting on an IMAC computer. I am making a new movie using FC Express on a laptop. I want to take some of my clips from the FCP computer and incorporate them into the FCE new movie. I get error messages that seem to indicate that this is not possible. Can anyone provide help?
Also, I do have the FCP movie that I referenced above, burned to DVD thru iDVD. Is it possible to take footage from there to incorporate into my new video in FCE? Can anyone recommend a program that will let me do this?

depending on your version of FCE you should be able to use a dv quicktime movie if the final cut movie can be exported that way.
mpeg streamclip should be able to demux the dvd to quicktime. google mpeg streamclip and download the version compatible for your machine

Installing FCP Studio Uninstall Express HD 3.5?

I just bought FCP studio(Academic Version), but before I install it should I uninstall Express(version above.) ? Live Type ? Soundtrack? I was planning on using Express on another machine so would like to have these programs on that since I paid for both.

You do not need FCE HD 3.5 before you install FCS. The installation for FCS will be shorter because LifeType (including livetime fonts (about 6GB) don't need to install. You can use both versions on one machine. However when you install FCE HD on another machine you may not use the program (FCE HD) the same time. Look in the legal information.

We need a bit more information to be able to troubleshoot your issue.
The most common cause of Guest Network / No Internet problems is trying to use the AirPort with a modem/router or gateway device.
The AirPort needs to be connected to a simple modem in order for the Guest Network feature to operate correctly.
Can you provide the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?
We don't know if you are using a Mac or PC to try to configure the Express, so some information about what operating system your computer is using would be helpful.

Opening FCP Project in Express?

I purchased FCE 4.0 today, as I have a FCP 6 project that I wanted to edit. There is nothing more technical done that FCE can't handle.
But I get an error that "The file format is too new for this version of the application", and "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut."
So I guess I'm asking is there a workaround? Or will there be an update that will support this?

Gotcha. Makes sense that it's that way. Big price/feature difference.
I do have it in .mov from FCP, so I figured that I'd add it to a new project and just start splicing from there.

Batch Input and CALL TRANSACTION are both data transfer methods. Batch Input usually are used to transfer large amount of data. For example you are implementing a new SAP project, and of course you will need some data transfer from legacy system to SAP system. If there is no standard batch input program, direct input program, you would need to write your own data transfer program and it is going to be batch input program. CALL TRANSACTION methods is real-time method, whenever you run the program CALL TRANSACTION can be triggered. CALL TRANSACTION is used especially for integration actions between two SAP systems or between different modules. Users sometimes wish to do something like that click a button or an item then SAP would inserts or changes data automatically. Here CALL TRANSACTION should be considered. You use CALL TRANSACTION and you do everything automatically, collect necessary data, call transaction and so do database update. If any error occurs, show the user them.
Batch Input
With the Batch Input method, an ABAP program reads the external data that is to be entered in the R/3 System and stores the data in a batch input session. The session records the actions that are required to transfer data into the system using normal SAP transactions.
When the program has generated the session, you can run the session to execute the SAP transactions in it. You can explicitly start and monitor a session with the batch input management function (by choosing System - Services - Batch Input), or have the session run in the background processing session.
It offers management of sessions, support for playing back and correcting sessions that contain errors, and detailed logging. Your program prepares the data and stores it in a batch input session. A session is a collection of transaction data for one or more transactions. Batch input sessions are maintained by the system in the batch input queue. Instead, the entire batch input process takes place inline in your program. With CALL TRANSACTION USING, the system process the data more quickly than with batch input sessions. Unlike batch input sessions, CALL TRANSACTION USING does not automatically support interactive correction or logging functions.
Your program prepares the data and then calls the corresponding transaction that is then processed immediately.
The most important features of CALL TRANSACTION USING are:

You can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously. The program specifies the update type.

They are basically the same programs with a few features (that only pros usually require) missing from FCE.
All the Video Effects and Transitions are the same.
The main differences are concerned with esoteric features like being able to capture video other than DV - things which will not affect most amateurs or even some professionals.

It is used only for data transfer.It lies on ABAP Atack.also the underlying protocol is tRFC.
RFC
It is used when you need to process data and return values to remote system.That is it is used in synchronous scenarios.It lies on J2EE/Java Stack.It is not a data container like IDoc.It calls a functional module which gets executed.The underlying protocol is HTTP.Communication is done suing JCO/JCA.
Performance wise IDocs are better.
Proxies are used when large amount of data is involved.

Whats the diff between express and pro??

Just wondering what the main diff between the two are. I've used pro at school, but cant afford to get it at home. Will i still be able to use the same audio instruments like the same synths and plug ins??? Also, would i be able to run the program on a mac mini (top of the line)?

All I was saying is that if a person can afford to get Pro, they definitely should. The difference in features adds up to at least the difference in price, if not very much more.
Having said that, Express is good value compared to most other DAW software at that pricepoint, but it is only intended as a 'Lite' version.
Some examples, off the top of my head, of differences not made really clear in the comparison list.
Input Objects:
In Pro you can use Input Objects to monitor incoming signal without rec-enabling a track. That doesn't sound much, on the face of it, but what it means is you can use external FX units (hardware) as inserts in tracks (or busses) just like plugins, and bounce them with the mix. it also means you acn monitor what you are playing into Logic Pro with plugin FX applied, but record dry so you can hear your guitar with the reverb, or whatever, but still have the recorded dry signal so you can change the FX settings later.
Pro has some very handy environment objects. The main one being the Trabsformer object. But also another extremely useful object is TouchTracks.
If you've ever played with Ableton Live you would have noticed you can triger clips with the keyboard in all different ways (loop, gate loop, one shot etc.) Well TouchTracks does that with MIDI regions.(I have a feeling that feature in Live was modeled after Logic's TouchTracks' as it is incredibly similar.)
They are only a few examples of a whole range of differences. If all the differences were itemized in the 'comparison chart' it would be about 3 pages long.
All I am saying is, don't take the comparison chart as the definitive list of differences.
yes, Express is a good basic tool and you can do a lot with it, with some imagination.
The SOS author's claim that:
you're paying less than a third of the price of Logic Pro and getting over 90 percent of the functionality."
is not true in totality.
It may be true to someone who has never dabbled in audio software before, because it takes literally years to become fully conversant with every function in Logic Pro, and no-one uses absolutely everything.
But for serious users, who have big demands, in my opinion, Express is less than 30% of Pro's functionality.

Expression to Read Timecode of main / outer comp

I have a video with some User Interface animations.
I want to include a time code (reader effect) on all the instances of that GUI,
BUT... I don't want it to read its own comp's TC (beacuse this would be 00:01 and going...),
It should read the main / outside comp. So whenever you see the time code, it's in sync
with the real time.
Is there an expression that can pull this off ?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. If your main comp is called MainComp and one of the layers is a composition that contains the GUI elements and that comp is called GUI Comp, and you want to display the running time of the main comp then simply add a text layer to the Main Comp and add this expression to the Source Text property of the text layer. (to make this look good pick a monospaced font).
timeToNTSCTimecode(t = time + thisComp.displayStartTime, ntscDropFrame = true)
You'll find the code in the General category expression method menu avaailable in the timeline window by clicking on the little circle with an arrowhead icon next to the expressions.
To make the timecode read a different comp's timecode simply point to that composition by modifying the expression like this:
newTime = time - thisComp.layer("GUI Comp").inPoint
timeToNTSCTimecode(t = newTime + thisComp.displayStartTime, ntscDropFrame = true)
If you have video that was shot with timecode then you can capture that timecode by selecting Use Media Source in the Time Display Style section of your project settings. You would then just put the name of the video layer where the GUI Comp is in the newTime = definition of the expression.
If your project isn't ntsc time code then delete the ntscDropFrame = true
That should do it.
