Main drive Verify & Repair failed

I've got a problem. I was using Drive Genius to Defrag my Main drive. The application crashed in the middle of its run. The drive would then not mount on the desktop. I ran Disk Utility and received the following:"Volume check Failed----Volume: Filesystem Verify or Repair Failed. I rebooted using my backup. On boot-up a dialog box informed me that for a limited time the main drive would mount and to backup the drive. Disk Utility would not let me backup the drive. I tried to copy some critical files, from the main drive to the backup. I tried to reboot nothing. I did boot from the Install DVD, ran Disk utility. Got the same Verify/Repair failed message from both main & backup drive. Is there any thing I can try to recover my applications & data files??????????

First, I would never use a defrag app on any of my Apple HDs. No need for it and as you see, lots of potential problems.
Your HD may have been bad before defragging, which is why it failed (doesn't it first run it's own DU to check the HD???) but that's why we have TimeMachine.
I am sure that the defrag program warns to backup before defragging. If not, it's not worth keeping.
So you first need to boot into the Leopard DVD and reformat and partition your drive and then run DU to check if it is intact. If you still have HD errors, you need a new drive.
Whatever the outcome, after booting into the Leopard DVD, you will see in the Utilities menu a restore option, which will allow you to recover your system previous to the disaster, and start again.

  • "Disk not readable...", Verify & Repair fail, Zero Out, HFS+ still fail

    First, a time machine error came up saying the volume could not be found. Tried disk verify, disk repair (in disk utility) restarting, reconnecting, but to no avail. On restarting, computer says "Disk was not readable by this computer." I then Zeroed out all the data and reformatted the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). TM worked for most of the day until tonight when another error message came up saying that the next backup failed because it required 168GB, but only 49GB was available. Yet I had done virtually nothing since the last backup the hour earlier. I clicked "Back up Now" to try and get it to maybe re-evaluate the situation and maybe do the backup, but instead, I get the error that I got before - "The volume could not be found" (or something to that effect). Upon restarting, I again get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer".
    Is there something I am doing wrong? What can I do to fix this, or prevent this from happening later?

    This is what the error message was before, and is what it is now.
    You had these sorts of errors, then zeroed-out the drive, now you have them again?
    There's only one conclusion: your drive is failing. They don't always just crash and burn.
    Note that the volume name should be "Time Machine", but Disk Utility sees it as "disk2s1" for some reason.
    That's it's internal name to OSX. Use +System Profiler+ (Apple menu, +About this Mac,+ then +More Info.+
    Look in the sidebar for FireWire or USB (whichever it is), select it, and you'll see disk2s1 listed as BSD name.
    Time Machine Buddy seems to freeze most of my other widgets (can't type in calculator, can't delete Time Machine Buddy). It doesn't seem to do anything either, It just sits there saying "Backup Status" and "Messages" but no messages, just "....".
    That's not normal, if you've had a successful backup recently, or one currently in progress.
    An earlier post had a similar problem, because somehow he didn't have permission to read his own system log. From the Finder menubar, select Go, then +Go to folder,+ then type /var/log
    That should list, among other things, system.log Double-click it. If nothing shows in the center portion, post back and we'll fix it.
    But your main problem is an unreliable drive.

  • Disc unmounts and verify/repair fail

    I erased external hardrive because backups kept failing. Then I got 4 good backups and then the disc unmounted itself (won't remount) and now I get this when trying to repair:
    Verifying volume “Time Bandit”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed.
    Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    I really don't want to erase and start over several times a day! Anyone else with this?

    Now, I have erased the external drive and gone back to using my old backup software (Chronosync). The external drive is working great so I don't think that is the problem.

    What should I do?

    To add to my former post...
    Applejack a free (ie donationware) program fixed my Filesystem, directory and Volume structure problem! YAY! I found the program and a good review of it at Macfixit after I was googling around about the Flash Plugin problem. BTW that was fixed also...
    I am SOOO Happy! The other recommendation by a lot of the gurus on this site was to purchase DiskWarrier which cost 100 buckeroos! Sounds good but APPLEJACK is free!
    You do need to go into single user 'root' mode which is a scary place for non-pros to be. But it was simple to do and very fascinating to watch it work. You do have a choice whether to have the fixes done in 'auto' mode or interactive which does each step separately. MacFixit suggested to do it on the interactive mode at least the first time. So I did.
    It found all kinds of garbage and WAY more stuff like corrupted files etc. It sequesters them so you can take a looksee before trashing them...nice. And it was able to repair permissions that diskutility could not. I did a repeat of the 'verify disk' etc and got a clean bill of health.
    Now I must go back and donate a few bucks and send a thank-you to the developers of Applejack! I hope this helps another freaked out Newby like me! Ciao!

  • Unmounted External Hard Drive, Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed

    Earlier today, I disconnected the external hard drive while it was working.
    Now, the External Hard Drive won't even show up on my computer. However, on the Disk Utility it does. I have tried to verify & repair the disk. Plus click the mount button nothing work.
    Whenever, I ran the system verify or the repair. I got this error: Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
    Ok. So I have searched all over the internet and forums. Tried everything. Nothing works.
    I even tried Disk Warrior. It would work for a while, then when it came to step 8. It would make my computer go black and hold down the power button to restart.
    Any suggestions? Please let me know, I would like to recover the files if I can. Thanks.
    P.S.Yes I have tried to restart multiple time. I have tried with my USB 2.0, firewire 400, & 800 too.. Nothing.Everyone except the USB shows up in the disk utility but doesn't mount.

    I have had the exact same situation occur, but was able to follow these steps to successfully save everything!!
    The Unix program "dd" will instruct a drive to stream out all of it's data from beginning to end without regard to file structure, therefore creating an exact block-for-block duplicate. By doing this, it will allow you to copy everything off without having to mount the drive. It also ignores any corruption or physically damaged blocks on the drive which would otherwise crash or freeze the Finder. It saves the data to a disk image file which you can then open and use without fear of imminent failure (the format of the disk image will be the same as the original drive). Now that the data is preserved, you can safely go through and recover your files. Keep in mind that if a file was damaged or corrupted on the drive, it will be unusable, but at least you'll be able to get to the good ones safely. In my case, using "dd", I had no problems and got every file off. If it doesn't work for you, at least it's impossible for just trying it to further damage your files. I can recommend a few other remedies if this doesn't work for you.
    Note: The computer must be able to at least recognize the drive. That means either 1) It mounts 2) When you connect the drive the Finder asks if you want to erase or ignore, click ignore and you should be able to do this, or 3) Nothing happens in the Finder, but the volume in question does appear in Disk Utility. If you connect the drive and absolutely nothing happens and it never shows up in Disk Utility, it won't work.
    Note: As always, it is suggested that you backup important data on your startup disk before proceeding with stuff like this. It is possible to wipe a drive by mistyping a terminal command, so double check before you hit enter.
    _Now, on with the show!_
    Prep: Restart your machine so that it goes straight to the login window. Enter your user name and password. As soon as you press enter after your password, immediately hold down the shift key until the Finder finishes loading (this prevents any background startup items from running that might interfere).
    1. Attach the drive to the computer and make sure you have another drive with enough free space to hold the entire capacity of the bad drive, not just it's used space, but the WHOLE size of the bad drive (for exception, see very bottom of this post).
    2. In Terminal, type:
    +diskutil list+
    Look for the drive you want to recover in the "name" column, then write down it's "identifier" (ex. disk1s2)
    3. In Terminal, type:
    +dd bs=512 if=/dev/disk#s# of=/my_directory/image.dmg conv=noerror,sync+
    !! Replace "disk#s#" with the identifier you wrote down before !!
    !! Replace "/my_directory/" with the path to where you want to save !!
    !! Replace "image.dmg" with the name you want to give the disk image (must end with .dmg) !!
    4. To confirm that something is happening, open Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) and click "Disk Activity". Once you determine an average transfer rate, divide the size of the drive by that and then divide by 60 to see how many minutes it will take to finish. *+! ! FOR LARGE DRIVES THIS WILL TAKE A VERY LONG TIME ! !+* To be safe, do not use your computer for anything until the process finishes, you can leave Activity Monitor open so you can see when it's finished.
    If you're only really concerned about a certain files and you know their exact path on the bad drive, let me know and I can give you modified instructions to copy just those files, saving the time and space of doing the whole drive.

  • Reboot lafter 10.5.8 2@1TB drives - "Filesystem Verify or Repair failed".

    BACKGROUND:
    Ok so I upgraded (patched) Parallels a couple of days ago, but didn't reboot yet (I was busy). Then I see the auto update showing me 10.5.8 so I grab that and it's sitting there waiting for me to reboot.
    I have 4 browsers open (not windows, browsers - firefox, camino, safari & flock) for about a total of 40-50 windows. parallels is open, excel and word are open and so is thunderbird, iPhoto and a few other random things including time machine (once open I tend not to shut them down). So the systems decides it's had enough and crashes hard (to reboot) it looks like it come sup clean except I get a message about one of my 1TB drives is unavailable but mounted so I can recover data.
    I tried to run disk utility to get it back online but I get Invalid inode structure, "Filesystem Verify or Repair failed". I reboot, same. I shutdown, power off, the same. I try my 10.5.6 CD, the same.
    I reboot again and go into disk utility and I try to repartition one of the failed drives (time machine drive) and that fails but it does mount the drive so I can read it.
    I try to repair the other failed drive and in the meantime I get an external 1TB drive to see if I can recover the time machine data to an external location before I try to putz with it again.
    QUESTION:
    So anyway any ideas how to get these drives to come back up clean? I'm not so concerned with the data as I run multiple copies of the data across a NAS and two of the three drives. fsck is just not getting me ther as I can't reliably get the drives remounted.

    Ok I tried to verify the two drives. One failed to umount (that's ok, more later) and the other umounted but failed to verify.
    I attached an external 1TB drive. Formatted it and fired up Synk Pro. I dropped all of the directories from the failed disk into Synk and pointed it at the external drive.
    I'm going to bed now and expect Synk to have copied my data from the failed drive by morning. If that all goes well then I'll grab another external drive adn see if on reboot the other disk comes up (it's the time machine disk). I'd like to recover all of that and then repartition the drive that is now working (kinda) and put the data back. I'll also grab a copy of DiskWarrior and see if I can get the second drive back online.

    Try Disk Utility first. It's in your Applications/Utilities folder.
    You'll want to select the disk in question, then +Repair Disk+ (not Permissions). This actually repairs the +File System+ that's on the disk.
    If that works, you're ok, unless it begins happening frequently. Then you need to save up for a new one.
    If DU can't fix it, then one of the others might. Disk Warrior is about $100, and many people here say it's the best. There are others for less money, but there's no guarantee that any of them will succeed.
    You can also try just erasing it, and choose +Security Options,+ then +Zero Out Data.+ If that fails, or you have more problems with the drive, you need a new one.

    "...so I don't think he has the discs still."
    Have him call AppleCare and get a new set. If his system goes south that's the only way he can do repairs, check his hardware or reinstall a new OS. Those disks are gold. (not really gold, just a metaphor).

  • Filesystem verify or repair failed - help!

    Have searched and tried all the tricks and techniques to reclaim the 20 GB of gray space after using disk utility to get rid of my windows partition. Not happening. After verifies and repairs using the boot disk, I still get the Filesystem verify or repair failed error. I know the final step is to reinstall OSX clean, but I am hoping to avoid that because it will a) suck, b) take a long while, c) I can't find the 10.5 upgrade disk and don't want to go back to using 10.4, d) it will suck. Anyone with a working solution will get a blast of good vibes (known to fix bald spots and help weight loss).

    Thanks Lyssa... I unfortunately didn't use boot camp to delete the partition. I used disk utility and realize now that has caused all the problems. I do have other drives and usb drives and used time machine to back up the main drive. Can that help in ways other than a complete re-install?
    Will I be able to do a full install off the 10.6 disk Friday and then use Time Machine to restore all my apps and settings?

  • Disk repair failed / should I reformat my drive / how to format and restore

    I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 model and upgraded to Yosemite. The performance on my MB is ok, but just out of curiousity I ran a disk verify, and was told I needed to reboot, hold down CMD / R and run disk repair. I did so and the repair failed. I was promoted to backup and reformat/restore.
    Now, I do backup everything using time machine (not sure though if Parallels image is backed up). I do not however have any install disks for Mac OS.
    My questions:
    1. Should I even bother reformatting my HD?
    2. How do I go about formatting the HD and then re-installing the OS and all of my apps, particularly given that I have no DVD

    If you have extra external HDD, make clone backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, then,
    1) boot from external clone backup drive.
    2) reformat internal HDD.
    3) restore from clone backup drive with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

At the time I was down loading raw pictures off my camera through a card reader across my computer to a relatively new 2TB Western Digital portable hard drive. after about 13 to 15 pictures downloaded that drive faileded. My Mac Book Air works fine, but i get this message now everytime I run disc verify on this disc. The Macintosh HD checks out fine.

  • In the process of installing OS X Maverick on mac mini; got error "Filesystem verify or Repair failed"

    Hi,
    I am in the process of installing Maverick on my Mac Mini.  I got an error: "Filesystem verify or Repair failed".
    Most threads suggest that I either:
    1. restart process,
    2. install disk and try again,
    3. recover disk
    Since I am in the middle of installing, I cannot seem to go back to my working OS to restart the process.  Since Maverick is available in the App Store, i cannot use a disk for it.  That leaves me with recovering the disk.  Can anyone suggest how I can do this without destroying all my files on the computer?

    I do have a backup, but I can't access it right now.  I tried the OS X Recovery, but when I try the "Command-R" option, it just goes right back into the install.  I have used the "Command-R" option before, so I know when and how long to hold it for.  I just couldn't get it to not enter the install.  I did manage to at one point get a prompt where it asked me if I wanted to install from Macintosh HD (main partition) or Backup (secondary partition), but I chose Macintosh HD, and it went back into the install.  I couldn't get that option again for whatever reason.
    Is there a way I can just start from scratch?  Both Snow Leopard and Mavericks are online only.  Is there a way to pause the install, connect to the internet and install a brand new (wipe out all files - I can always use by backup to restore my important files later) copy of the OS?

    In order to repair the system disk you must boot from another disk drive. The operating system will not allow the disk drive it is running from to be repaired.
    Book the MBP and create a bootable clone on an external disk drive. Then boot from the external disk drive and repair the system disk drive from there.

    I'm hoping that someone here can tell me that I don't really have to worry about my new 13 inch unibody Macbook, which I bought last November. I'm travelling until April and, of course, don't have my install (or any other disks) with me.
    Today I installed some software and then ran 'repair disk permissions' to check that all was in order - which it was. However, my finger slipped (I actually find the new trackpad quite inaccurate from time to time but I guess that's my fault)- instead of closing Disk Utility I clicked on Verify Disk. I thought I would let it run its course ... imagine my surprise when this was the result ....

    What software is on the package? I believe Tech Tool Pro can do a directory repair job though Diskwarrior is, as the other poster observes, premier.
    Sometimes running verify on the same drive from which you are booted can produce spurious errors because the drive is constantly changing and verify can't keep track of everything and reports errors.
    Errors should be taken seriously and corrected before things get worse. It could ultimately end up in your losing files and having the computer crash. If nothing else make sure you have a backup of your data files.
    You can try running Verify in Safe Mode where the computer is running under a more restricted environment and see what it says.

    Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
    Failing all else there are several tools that run from Single User Mode, including fsk and Applejack. I would run these after backing up the files since occasionally any repair attempt (even with Diskwarrior) can go wrong and make things worse.
