Main screen gray - external display works

Hi,
My PB G4 17" 1.0 GHz has a problem with its main screen. However it is still lit, it doesn't show anything. I can still operate the brightness and see the screen become more bright or dim.
When I attach a second display, I see video there. So the machine itself still works, boots, etc. but video on the main display isn't shown.
I've already reset NVRAM and the PMU but unfortunately that didn't help.
Any ideas what to try next?
Thanks in advance.

This sounds like it could be a hardware problem with the inverter or inverter cable for the built in display. Since you have video on the external, the chip on the logic board seems to be functioning. I don't know of any software fix for this--I think the hardware will need to be repaired or replaced.
Good luck!

  • Can not properly view cover flow in full screen in external display

My mac is the new Mac book pro 15.4 inch screen and I connect my mac pro to external display e.g. Samsung LCD monitor 24 inches.
The bug is that I can not PROPERLY view full screen (in external display) for some application e.g. iTunes, and Front Row.
    - When I use iTunes, I can not properly view Cover Flow view in full screen (in the external display screen) except the case of mirror display.
    - For Front Row, I can not view full screen in external display but only my mac display.
However, for other DVD or VDO players, I can view movie on external display in full screen and I still be able to do other works on my mac screen.
Please let me know how to solve it.

    No, not lifetime.

  • MacBook Pro 5,4 - Black internal Screen - external display working

Hi everyone, I've recently been donated a MBP that works in every way except the builtin screen is just black. I hope someone can help
I've searched these forums, google, youtube and others and tried all sorts of things but the internal display won't work.
    So far:
    - SMC / PRAM reset - multiple times
    - Replaced display panel. This is LED backlit so no inverter.
    - Replaced LVDS cable
    - Checked all connections are tight
    - RAM has been replaced and checked
    - Apple Hardware Test reports a clean bill of health
System Profiler reports 9400M with "No Display Connected" for the internal display but external is fine.
The system runs absolutely fine with the exception that the internal display doesn't work at all.
Can anyone help me? Really hoping "replace the logic board" isn't the only answer.
    Many thanks for any clues,
    Simeon

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply.
Regarding the GPU failure, I had my doubts about this simply because the external display at any resolution and 'screen share' are fine and that would seem to imply the GPU itself is fine.
I don't have an answer and I suspect it's going to require a new logic board, but from what I know that is an expensive fix and that would be unaffordable meaning the MBP will effectively become a MacMini which I'd really like to avoid.
Is there anything else I can try?

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.

  • Can an external display work if logic board is broken?

Recently I had my early 2007 24" iMac's graphics card fixed. Three weeks later the main screen went all black but my external screen works and I'm able to use the computer just fine when I mirror the display.
I gave the imac to the same repair place that changed my graphics card and they saying the logic board is broken.
I was thinking the problem was display cable or something but logic board is a much more expensive thing to repair so wanted to  double check here if its even possible for the computer to work with an external display if logic board is broken?

The correct version of the AHT works just fine on all Mac's. But you need the correct version of it.
For the Late 2011 models that is only available as a Online, Internet Boot system where the computer is booted from over the Internet.
Restart the system and at the chime hold down the Option+d keys until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen. Then once it full boots and you select a language run the test.
Also it is best to have the computer Wired to your internet router with a cable.

  • Blank screen no external display

My satellite is less than one year old. On start, screen is blank, external display does not work. Potentially motherboard issues. This appears to be common. Will they pay money back instead of repairing and returning the.horrible product? It may break again and out of warranty.

  • Macbook a1342 acting up, black screen but extenal display works...

    Hello,
I am a new member to this community and I'm already getting a headache from my macbook. So my mac has been working flawlessly for the past 2 weeks or so ( Macbook A1342 Late 2009 w/ OSX Lion). I have SMCfan control and istat pro to keep an eye on temps and to stay ahead of the heatsoak game. I did a "deep discharge" of the battery then waited a few hours to plug it back in and when i did and let it charge up, I then proceded to turn it on and do some light surfing if any, mostly idle though. While i was doing that i noticed that the temps were starting to soar up to 80-94 degrees C. I turned up the fans to full throttle to get it cool and it cooled it down to say 60-70's. Okay, now afterwards, I rebooted the mac and then it started giving me more issues as in no display, but I do hear the chime and it seems to boot as normal just no display. I plugged in my mini dvi to hdmi connector to a tv and BOOM, the screen popped right up on the TV like it was supposed to; at this time i became very confused. Now i know that the macbook camera and LVDS cord are connected together so while it was still connected to the external display i attempted to turn on the camera with Facetime and it said camera was not detected!!?? So I'm not sure what the issue is, I am currently deployed to an undisclosed location in SW Asia for a while so I am unable to go to any repair store. I consider myself very technically inclined so repairing this would not be an issue within reason of course. Is it the logic board, if it were it wouldn't start up right?? Is it the LVDS cable, I popped off the back of the mac and looked at the connector and it seems fine, i unplugged it then plugged it back in and no change. When it was connected to the external display, it seemed to be running flawlessly...I was unable to see any problems on the screen, but like i said nothing came up on the mac screen and no camera was found, no green light came on either. Please help...I really need this thing back up and running, and I apologize for the long first post.
    Thanks!
    Matt

if an external monitor through the Mini display is working then there isn't a GPU issue id recommend checking the LVDS connector on the logic board make sure it isn't damaged if its damaged then id recommend un-soldiering it and re-soldering a new LVDS connector to the logic board also another thing to check is the LVDS ribbon cable itself make sure it isn't torn anywhere also try another LCD screen also

  • Internal display dead, external display works fine

    Hi,
I left my machine unplugged over the summer. When I came back, the internal display was dark.
The machine was making all the right noises at startup, and the Caps Lock key worked, and I could make it beep louder and softer with the volume F-keys, so I hooked it up to an external monitor. It works perfectly with the external monitor.
I went through the troubleshooting procedures - zap the pram, reset the power manager, boot from a CD - no video on the internal display.
While connected to the external monitor, I ran the System Information program and looked for the internal display device. It wasn't there! Only the external one shows up.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
I can post screenshots or System Information reports if anyone wants them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Someone took it off my hands. They're going to use it with an external display.
    Thanks all!

  • Quick time full screen on external display

I've connected an old CRT Monitor to my Powerbook, works fine. I'm using it to play Movies on it in Full Screen Mode while my Powerbook's screen is free for using any other application. Unfortunately, this works with Apple DVD player and VLC player. In these applications, I just drag the movie window into the middle of the external screen and choose "Full Screen". If I do this in QT (pro), the movie comes on full screen on the built-in screen. In iTunes, the animation appears in full screen on the external monitor, but the Powerbook's screen turns black.
Can I do anything about this?
Powerbook G4 (and one old iBook original tangerine)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   iTunes 6.0.4 QT pro 7.0.4
Powerbook G4 (and one old iBook original tangerine)   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

In the Quicktime Player, under the View menu select Present Movie. In the sheet that appears you'll get a little layout of the available screens. Just select external monitor and hit play.
    I'm not sure about iTunes.

  • Macbook Air 2008, LCD display nothing but grey, external display works

    Hi Everyone,
I've got a 2008 Macbook Air running 10.6.8 on a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 with 2GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. About a month ago something went wrong with the logic board - the unit wouldn't start up and gave 3 beeps indicating a bad RAM issue. Since the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board and the warranty was way past expired, I figured I'd just replace the board. The replacement was a breeze, albeit time-consuming, and once I got the new board in, the unit booted up fine.
The problem is that now the display isn't quite working right. When it first boots the screen is completely grey - I get no spinning disc, no apple, no question mark, nothing. If I leave it alone, the screen dims once the sleep timer kicks in, but it's just a darker shade of grey. The brightness works too - when you reduce it the screen does dim but there's still no picture. The kicker is that I hooked up my projector to it and I can my desktop as I should. I tried resetting the NVRAM, ran disc utility, and tried running the Apple Hardware Test. The thing with the AHT is that I can't see the screen when it's running so I don't know exactly how it went, but in System Profiler I see that an AHT was run today and the result was "Passed". I don't know if that means no errors came up, or that the errors that did come up weren't problematic enough to fail the test.
I was very careful in replacing the logic board so I doubt any of the internals were damaged in the process but everything seems to indicate a hardware issue here. The screen was working fine before the previous logic board died so I find it hard to believe that both the board and the screen died at the same time. I've read about some people finding the data display cable to be the problem but no amount of fussing with it causes even the slightest change on the LCD display.
Any suggestions of how to diagnose the screen and/or cable without a working display? I just put $300 into this machine in the logic board and I really don't want to spend even more to replace the screen/cable.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Hi Marat,
I appreciate the quick response but I doubt the machine is completely toast - it clearly still functions to some degree. I'm trying to assess whether the replacement logic board could be the problem (and how to test this) as well as troubleshooting the issue if it isn't the logic board. I don't feel like getting stuck with a $300 logic board that might have a fried component...

  • Deactivate laptop screen with external display attached

    Hi guys,
Once upon a time when you connected a powersource, peripherals and external monitor to your MacBook (Pro/Air) you could then open the laptop to allow for better cooling (useful) without activating the laptop's built-in display thus staying in single-screen mode.
However, since Lion you can't. Whichever way you try, fly, walk on your hands or smash your head into a wall Lion will always always activate the laptop's display when you open it up.
Anyone got a Clu how to get the old behaviour back?

    1. Potential solution: Apple wants your forum feedback
Please see a post in the following thread and reply to it as you wish. Apple has now reportedly requested that we provide evidence in support of our desire to have the "open lid with screen off" option reinstated (eg significance of operating temperature differences, reduction in wifi reception, etc). They may then address our concerns with a Lion update.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=60&tstart=0
    2. The madness of magnets
This is getting very worrying. It's madness that Apple owners feel obliged to experiment with passing magnets over the top of their premium-priced computers and sticking them on here, there and everywhere in the hope of finding short-term workarounds. The sooner this problem is fixed at source (ie within Lion), the better.

  • Very frustrating problem with external display-works but doesn't

I just set up my new LED Viewsonic monitor with my new MBA and it works flawlessly...except when I first want to hook it up. When I first want to use it I plug everything (laptop is closed) and then proceed to turn on the monitor. When the monitor turns on it shows white noise UNTIL I open my laptop and go to the general settings. Why the heck is this happening?! I have it from HDMI out to a HDMI>DVI converter into the back of the monitor. It's just annoying and seems very peculiar. This also happens when everything is already working and the computer goes to sleep and I try to wake it up=white noise, until I open it up and go to the display tab under general settings.
I appreciate any help that anyone can offer!!
    Thank you!

I feel kind of stupid, but I guess I all I had to do was wait about 5-10 seconds and then it worked. Nevermind

  • The graduated filter shows no change in the main screen image. It works on the small thumbnail in the upper left hand corner...

My graduated filter doesn't work in the main image, but shows changes in the small upper left thumbnail.
    How do I fix?

In LR Prferences try unchecking 'Use Graphics Processor.'
If that works next try upgrading your graphics drivers via AMD, Intel, or Nvida webste for your graphics adapter model.
