Main screen OFF, while External Screen ON

Hi,
How can I turn my iMac's main screen completely OFF, when I'm watching a movie on my external 1080p TV, so the iMac won't dim annoyingly next to it?
please skip "cover with", "set background", "lower brightness", "turn iMac", "crackopen iMac" and "why do you get an iMac if.." answers,
I'd like the main screen absolutely OFF, while the stuff runs on the external screen..
there has to be a solution for this basic function in OSX, it's 4-5 clicks in Windows, but I'm an Apple newbie..
Thanks in advance for your answers!
Steve

No you can not just turn off the iMac's display.
Everyone here in the Forum is a Mac user just like you, if you are annoyed or discontented please contact Apple > http://www.apple.com/contact/
There is a third party Utility called Shades that will independently dim either Display to black in Extended Desktop Mode. > http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31515

iMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), is it possible with Lion?

Actually, Plex does the best job by placing a black background to the internal iMac screen it's called Blanking.
However that does not turn off the backlit which is very bright on the iMac 24" also the internal screen will draw more power that way.   As you probably know running bootcamp you can turn off the internal screen while watching a movie on the external.  This isn't a hardware limitation, I hope Lion has this feature.

  • Can i turn the Laptop screen off while connecting the TV?

    Dear All,
I am connecting my Mac to TV 32'' via mini display port converted to HDMI.
I am using it on MAC OS X 10.6.6, and on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 also.
when i am connecting my TV, the 2 screens are on, Laptop screen and TV screen.
Can i turn the Laptop screen off while connecting the TV?
how to do this on both operating systems?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Boudy,

The quick answer is, hook up the tv to the computer, close the lid, then wake the computer up by clicking the mouse while the lid is closed. Not sure if it'll work while running windows, but I'd bet it does if you have the mac drivers installed on the win os.

I am unaware of any PCs that support connection via Target Display Mode. I have never tried it myself, so I don't know if it would work. All you can do is try provided you have an iMac that supports TDM and the proper cable adaptors.

Can I use my iMac screen as an external screen for my PC laptop ?

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.

  • Is there a way to turn the new iMac screen off while running a song?

I know the key command is shift control eject-- and it works-- but only for a few seconds. Does anybody know how to turn the screen off so that it will stay off for any serious period of time?
I used to do this in my g5 by just turning the monitor off. great to trick to ensure that i'm listening to a mix w/ my ears--- not my eyes.
    thank you

Thank you for all the responses.
I've tried the black cloth. it's okay-- but i wind up have to attach something to the iMac--- and my clients are very sensitive to the things look here. i think it's petty-- but whatever. Also-- i have to constantly be taking it on/off as i make ajustments.
As far as turning around goes-- this is okay. I've tried it. the thing is-- your the way your ears receive sound-- is significantly different when you turn around. not drastically-- but again-- i'm talking about slight adjustments anyhow. any little difference can throw things off.
And the idea of a screen saver-- well-- here's the thing: when i'm trying to think only of music-- i don't even want to have to look at a computer screen. Imagine if you owned a nice pioneer 1970's stereo receiver and killer set of speakers. But everytime you were listening to it-- you had to look at a some sort of computer image. just not that pleasant.
comfort is pretty important to me at this point and that's kind of the whole goal. to still sit where i sit, look where i look, but not have to see a lit display on a computer screen.
i will try the hot corner thing.
thank you all for your responses.

  • Got HDCP problem on macbook pro screen not even external screen

I have rented a movie (HD) on itunes.
I download it and try to play it, then I have a popup saying that the movie can't be displayed on my screen because of some HDCP restriction.
I don't understand, I've got a mbp retina display, I just try to play the movie on the computer, I did not even plug an external screen.
I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.4, with itunes 11.
I think the most innaceptable is that I did not even have a warning that say that I can't rent the movie, or that I would not be able to read it on my mac.

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection(HDCP; commonly, though incorrectly, referred to as High-Definition Copy(right) Protection) is a form of digital copy protectiondeveloped by Intel Corporation to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections. Types of connections include DisplayPort (DP),Digital Visual Interface (DVI), and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), as well as less popular, or now defunct, protocols like Gigabit Video Interface(GVIF) and Unified Display Interface(UDI).
Meaning, someone doesn't want you to be able to play the movie on the screen because of copyright reasons.
    Sorry. (I know, DRM sukcs!!)

  • Why does the iphone allow itself to be powered off while the screen is locked?

Why does the iphone allow itself to be powered off whlie in the lock screen?  This makes it impossible to track if stolen does it not?  Seems like an assinine concept!

It does, but there's little we regular mortals can do about it. However, you now have something to contribute to Apple via the Feedback Link!

  • Turning screen off while still performing gaming programming tasks.

    G'day everyone,
I've got a slight issue.. I have a G15 keyboard that performs daily programming tasks in game each and every day. So the simulating of buttons doesn't allow my screen to go into sleep mode. This worries me as it could lead to my computer having a shorter lifespan. Just wondering if there is a manual way to put your computer to sleep but still have the keyboard perform it's duties that I have set it to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • IMac 24 in internal screen not working - external screen is working.

The model is 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
    4GB memory
    Serial Number (system): VM826CRLZE7
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0609
    Revision ID: 0x00a2
    ROM Revision: 3234
The graphics card was replaced in October in the Apple Store in Barcelona. Until a couple of weeks ago it was working OK again. Now the display is blank and I can only work on the external monitor I have hooked up to it.
If I turn off the computer over night - it will work for about one or two hours then go blank again. It will come back on again occasionally now and then during the day in a random way - not connected to what I am doing with the computer.
    I have zapped the PRAM
If video is available remove display-related preferences:
    1. Delete the com.apple.windowserver.plist preferences located at /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.xxxx.plist/
I also did the upgrade to 10.6.7 and it worked for a few hours after that - Longer and I thought it was fixed but no luck. The screen is blank again.
    I reset the SMC
Followed the advanced trouble shooting guide at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
I would have expected that the repair I had done in October would last longer than this. It cost a lot to get the job done and they kept the iMac for a month. I need a way to fix this that isn't going to cost me as I am skint now.
    Please Help.

    Hi,
At first my screen would go black and then sometimes come back on after an minute or half an hour. After a few days it went black and wouldn't come back on at all.
I got my replacement ATI 2600 Pro graphics card from a guy in Hong Kong on ebay.

I got an independant mac repair guy to fix it, I doubt apple would offer to do this job for you without using their parts. You could probably do it yourself if you know how to take the machine apart.

  • Screen Flickering while using screen

I am using tilda in openbox.
Until I enabled "Double Buffering" in tilda, I was facing the same flickering issue in tilda too. By flickering, I mean that suppose I open a frest terminal in that & then I press BACKSPACE, I get a flicker in screen window.
I have tried opening screen in gnome-terminal too, same problem.
I really want to use screen as complete replacement to tabs, but this flickering issue is holding me back. Any solution?

  • Cursor disappears when disconnecting external screen

Hi all, just in case the subject line didn't say it all, we have recently been experiencing a loss of our cursor after we disconnect an external screen. It seems to happen with both the DVI and VGA adaptors. I am turning off the external screen before disconnecting the adaptor, however after our powerbook refreshes the cursor is invisible. It still functions fully, it's just invisible. Only a restart brings it back. We've had the powerbook for three years and as I stated before this is a recent development. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

  • External screen black

I downloaded a movie for viewing it on an external screen. When playing the video, the _external screen gets black_ for a second or so - and it returns in irregular intervals. Any help appreciated.
I'm using MacBookPro5,1 running iTunes 9.0.2 on MacOS 10.5.8 that includes a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT chipset for the external Monitor. The monitor is connected and synced with the MBP via iDVI using an PC input (VGA) of a Sony Bravia screen.

When I reboot, there is about 3 inches of black screen on the right of my main screen. The external screen is still black. It is the same behaviour as when I do 'xrandr --auto' when the screen is plugged. If I unplug it and execute the same command, everything is back to normal.
