Mainframe Reporting

Does anyone have experience with reporting on Mainframe data with OBIEE? My thoughts are that DB2 data should not be an issue with a DataDirect DB2 driver. Is this correct? Also, how about non-releational data like IMS and VSAM fiiles?

Our client uses XI 3.2 but is experiencing issues with Hierarchical BEX queries returning blanks - the mdx is fine - just webi that seems to have a problem and I'm also trying to determine in exactly which instances this occurs.
XI 4.x supposedly resolves mots issues but here again details are not known.
I.e. hopefully someone can point to an info source that describes in more detail what issues are likely to occur re hierarchies and webi.

How to export to text file without ruin the format

Hi guys,
I need some help here. My company recently come with the decision to print the mainframe report file that usually come as a text file, to a virtual printer. This virtual printer is printing the report as Adobe PDF format. The problem is, my Line of Business have a macros on Excell file that will grab the information from the text file to be processed in the Excell format. I tried to use Adobe Professional 8 to re-convert the PDF file to be text file, but the result is, most of the blank space is gone, and it is align to left, thus make it unusable to the Excell file.
Unfortunately, I can't provide you the sample of the document, because it contain classified customer info.
But appreciate if you can give me some advice.

It sounds as if you are dealing with untagged PDF.
Tagged output PDFs, with a well-formed structure, provide (amoung other things) the ability to Save As/Export
content to some other applications with all or most of the layout/format intact.
I suspect that the output PDFs you have are untagged.
As there is, currently, a rather limited number of applications that support adequate tag management
(FrameMaker, InDesign, MS Word (via Adobe's PDFMaker & to a much lesser extent with Office Save As to PDF - XPS)
I suspect the mechanism used to provide your PDFs won't cut it with regards to providing a tagged output PDF having a
well-fomed structure (which would include dictionaries containing format/layout data).
As alluded to by Bernd, there may be third party plug-ins that might help.
The more reliable/functional ones tend to not be inexpensive.

Design a report for mainframes data.

Hello All,
I was given a requirement to design a report using BI Publisher to burst emails with attachments, where the input file is coming from Mainframes ( fixed positioning text file which also includes the context of the attachments).
The record layout of the input file from mainframes has the following fields:
1) Id# positions 1-6
2) Program Code positions 7-10
3) Document sort sequence positions 11-12 packed #
4) Line text positions 13 - 100
Notes:
1) This email should be send for the ID# which then needs to be joined to another table in DB to get the email address for that ID#.
2) This is 100 (for "abc"), 200 (for "xyz") , 300 (for "pqr").
3) The attachments need to be in a specific sequence and this assigns a "1" to all "abc", "2" to all "xyz" and "3" to all "pqr".
4) This is the text that should be printed as an attachment.
We use BI Publisher Standard Edition 10.1.3.4.0.
Please give me some ideas on how to accomplish this task.

BW hierarchies issue with BOBJ Reporting tools

Brief about the requirement:
Our client was using Mainframe and other tools for their reporting. Now as they have planned to go for SAP, purchased SAP BW 7 and SAP BOBJ XI 3.1 for warehouse and reporting purposes.
Initial Road map planned for implementation was
o     to use Crystal for operational and formatted reporting
o     to use WebI for Ad hoc and interactive reporting
o     to use Xcelsius for Dashboards
Once we started analysing the requirements, we observed that client requires hierarchies extensively for reporting and they donu2019t want to compromise in that for reporting. At this situation we have explored the options and came to know from the SAP sites that BO got limitations in case of BW hierarchies. But we not able to articulate the what is the exact issue. Is it with only WebI or Crystal also?
What we have articulated is we cannot report the hierarchies in BO in terms of nodes - > Sub nodes -> sub nodes instead we can do as fixed columns. Please add me if i am missing anything else.
And also please let us know options. Options that we were thinking are Implement with BO XI 3.1 considering Advanced analysis tool then upgrade to BO XI 4.1.
Please suggest us, what is the BW & BO hierarchy issue and right tools to use.

How to do equivalent of Mainframe batch jobs in Oracle

We are considering to move our application from mainframe to Oracle , our present day application relies heavily on mainframe batch jobs for report generation and other purposes, I was wondering what are the similar batch options we have in Oracle .Any feedback is most welcome.

(Your question was posted to the forum dealing with Oracle's Application software so it's somewhat off topic.)
However, Oracle does include a Job schedule capability (DBMS_JOBS) as part of the database, as well as other neat capabilities including a full blown Workflow and Message Queue - all built into the database.
In addition, you might want to consider looking at the Oracle9i Application Server as that includes comprehensive (paper and web based) reports and (web based) ad-hoc query.
Strongly urge you to contact a sales rep and ask for technical discussion on these capabilities.

Not Capturing When Recording Mainframe

I have recently upgraded to version 4 - and I now find that
trying to record a 3270 emulator command/key-board driven window
impossible. Only the first window is captured - subsequent key
strokes are not signalling C4 to grab a new slide. I had done this
successfully (although every once in a while it would take more
than one try) in C1 & C2. I trying playing around with the
recording settings, but no luck. Anyone had this issue - I know I
am probably in th minority with the whole mainframe recording in
this windows world...but keeping my fingers crossed

click the mouse each time the screen changes. This should force
Captivate to capture. I know this is a pain and by no means am I
suggesting something along the lines of (well, cut Adobe some
slack. We should just live with things because we know they are
busy), but at least is a workaround until something comes along to
change or correct the behavior.

Combination Report:Shipping Order/BarCode Labels

Help!I am trying to re-create a report from a mainframe that is printed on special size document that contains Shipping Order information as well as bar code labels. The problem as I see it is being able to print the barcodes (which contain individual items) in an area that is usually designated for Header information. It is almost like taking two different reports (a shipping order and barcode label report) and 'glueing' them together.
Header:ShipTo, Shipto Address, ShipTo City, State etc. Body: Item #, Item Description, Quantity, Price Footer: TotalsThe right side of this report (document) should contain the bar code labels. Any Suggestions????

9i Reports & DB2

Can anyone tell me how to use 9i Reports using the IBM DB2 Connect JDBC Driver (not the JDBC-ODBC bridge)? My DB2 is on an MVS mainframe so I have to go through an IBM DB2 Connect Server on NT.
I put the following in jdbcpds.cnf

I have oc4j.jar in the classpath.
In the Oracle Reports connect string I have tried just specifying a database name that is registered in my DB2 Connect client and specifying Server:6789:database, where server is the NT box running the DB2 JDBC Applet Server on port 6789 and database is a database registered on the server.
I get Error 62002 from the JDBC query build connection on everything I have tried.
I have been able to successfully run a Java test program using the DB2 Connect driver and the same JDK where Reports is intalled.
I have an open tar but not making any progress. They tell me I need to use the DataDirect DB2 driver, which I have tried with the same results. I don't believe it will work via the DB2 Connect Server.

Developer Tool Forms retreiving data from a Mainframe system using MQSeries

I had a TAR posted to the Forms Group asking questions about data access using MQSeries and Oracle. That group suggested I ask my question to this group.
What I need to accomplish is the ability for a user to type in a Medicaid DCN number on a secure website which is produced using Forms and Reports 9i, have it send the request to a CICS sub-routine, and return data such as Name, DOB, address, in a string to be separated, displayed on the screen, and eventually saved to a Oracle database. The group had given me three things to think about:
1) Using Oracle Procedural Gateway to monitor for messages coming from MQSeries. Problem is that is requires additional licenses which we do not have.
2) Using Oracle Messaging Gateway to monitor for messages. It doesn't require additional licenses but does require an Enterprise Edition license and we are running Standard Edition.
3) Using Forms in conjunction with JAVA to accomplish the communication between the Web Form, MQSeries, and the Mainframe. I really don't know JAVA but I am wondering if I really need to know it. I am thinking I can make sure that the parameters that the CICS program is expecting is there then somehow call the sub-routine. There must then be data or information returned to me in a string to be brought into Forms to be separated and put to the screens to be saved eventually.
Question: How do we call a routine such as a CICS subroutine or a Webservice from Forms? Can I do so without products such as Oracle Messaging and Oracle Procedural Gateways to monitor for responses coming back from MQSeries?

I remember having this same problem a while back - except I
always got a 0 record count. I could get to the table, but not
access the data inside at all. I tried to find the post I had on
this forum but can't. Anyway... the problem is with Advantage 7.1
working with MX. Advantage released a hotfix in the form of a .dll
file (email me if you need it I'm sure I can find it on my
machine). However it was just a bandaid type fix because the
problem was addressed and corrected in the newer versions of
Advantage that were later released. If you upgrade Advantage your
problem should go away. The newest release is 8.1

Captivate 4 not recording mainframe emulator demo

I had used previous versions of Captivate to record simulations of our proprietary mainframe system. Since upgrading to 4 a couple years back, I am no longer able to get Captivate to recognize the keystrokes or the screen changes. It captures the first screenshot only and then nothing. Could there be an option/property I have set wrong?

Sometimes the answer is simple. Perhaps you turned off Automatic recording and have shifted into Manual mode.

Hyperion Reporting and Analysis

Hello Gurus,
So I installed Hyperion (11.1.2.2) foundation services(all componants), essbase(all componants), planning (all componants. well, it was only one componant), Reporting and Analysis framework (web application, services and common libraries. i installed only these two because hyperion planning depends on them), financial management ADM driver (chosen by default when i want to install hyperion reporting and analysis). i installed them and configured them all togather. I'm using a Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production on Windows 2008 SP2 32bits.
Configuration of Reporting and Analysis framework failed, and that caused several problems when i ran the EPM system Diagnosis. this is what i got. Note: I'm gonna list only the errors/warnings in anything other than reporting and Analysis. as for reporting and analysis, i'm gonna list everything. sorry it's so long....

yes, looks like i didn't have moduke 7 downloaded. however after i did and installed it, i still got the following errors that seemed to do with connectivity to RAFRAMEWORK and it's database. I am going to list errors in all modules, except for Reporting and Analysis, i'm going to post everythign else.

Invoke oracle report 10g from database pl/sql package

Is there a way that i can invoke an oracle report 10g from the database pl/sql package? I am working on a requirement that needs to generate a report when one of the criteria is not met.

I have a scenario where i need to fetch members details like name , email address and so on from the mainframes on the oracle database. Then on the oracle database i need to check if they have a email address or not. If yes then i need to generate a notice and mail it to them. If they don't have an email address, i'll have to print that out in a some centralized location.
By the way, the notice was developed using oracle reports 10g.
Now i am developing a pl/sql package which will do the address validation but i didn't know how to call a oracle report to generate the notice in pl/sql procedure.
As suggested i will try with dbms scheduler and see if that works for me.

Batch PDF Reports raising error REP-3002: Error initializing printer.

We are running Reports 6.0 in Windows NT 4.0. When run manually the PDF reports are able to see the PostScript Print Driver and generates PDF output. We have a batch job on the NT that gets kicked off from the Mainframe via XPATH, which spawns multiple report processes as needed to run the PDF reports. We get the error "REP-3002: Error initializing printer." under this scenario.
Any help to resolve this will be appreciated.

i've changed to use RUN_REPORT_OBJECT as your advice and followed the instructions in "Oracle Reports Remote Printing Utility - An Oracle Technical White Paper December 2000". i tested orarrp by created the HTML file follow the steps in page 5 of the paper, it worked.
then i modified existed form, set report object property like this :
SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(report_id,REPORT_EXECUTION_MODE, BATCH);
SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(report_id,REPORT_DESTYPE, FILE);
SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(report_id,REPORT_DESFORMAT,'PDF');
SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(report_id,REPORT_DESNAME,'test.rrpa');
SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(report_id,REPORT_SERVER,'Rep60_NTSERVER2');
note : i'm not sure that i set the right value for REPORT_SERVER property, i got this value from TNSNAMES.ORA file.
then call the report with this statement :
:GLOBAL.ReportHandle := RUN_REPORT_OBJECT(report_id);
it showed the same error message :
"REP-3002 Error initializing printer. Please make sure a printer is installed."
i think i set something wrong, but i don't know where. could you help me ?

Hiding the field in reports

Hello Friends,
I'm newbie to oracle reports now i like to hide the unfilled fields in oracle reports at run time.
Actually the field is inside the repeating frame which is enclosed by a main frame.
In this i have an text in the main frame bcoz it shouldnt be repeated. So i kept in main frame.
Now i need to know how to hide that mainframe contents from the report at run time while field in it is empty.

Is data guard supported on mainframe zLinux? Anything limitation?

We have Oracle database 9.2.0.4 running on mainframe zLinux. We are thinking of building a data guard for HA.
Is there data guard supported on mainframe zLinux? Anything limitation for zLinux version? can I use 9.2.0.4 on one side, 11.1 on other side?

I am aware of some limitations regarding the logical standby with different chipsets (not supported in one of my environments), but nothing specific in your case. Since limitations on IBM zSeries Based Linux (z/Linux) are not mentioned specifically, it might mean that most of the features would work with the same db version and os version. On the other hand, it might mean there are limitations not discovered or reported to Oracle support.
