Mainstage 2.1.2 Question

Not sure what to do with this. When I assign my Keystation 88 to Mainstage I am able to see all of my splits, layers, etc. However, when I assign the input to Keyboard 1 (another midi input assigned to my Kurzweil) I lose the graphic of my splits and layers. Everything still works and I have input from both the Kurzweil and the Keystation but I no longer see the nice color representation of the location of the patches.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Paul

You would only save about 500MB by deleting MS 2.1.3. You may find it useful to keep the application, or perhaps to make a zip and then delete the original

No, you must save them in LPX, then load them in MS3

  • New to Mainstage but I have one question.

    Hi guys,
I'm new to Mainstage, but not to Logic.
Anyway, I have one rather complicated question before I dig though all the manuals.
Here is the set up that I want to achieve. My buddy has an I-Mac, I have a MacBook. What we have been doing involving logic is that I have 3 Guitar rig 4's going. A stereo pair for each Guitar rig. I am able to switch between the rigs with a single guitar input. While in each rig I use my FCB 1010 controller and make loops. After a loop is made I switch to a different guitar rig and make a 2nd loop. After that I go to the 3rd guitar rig and play leads over the first 2 loops. These are all going to separate tracks in my firnds I-Mac where he has drum machines going and he is playing his keyboards. We record all this in real time. Logic can sort of handle this, but not really all that well and I get some strange behaviors.
In Mainstage, I know you can use the mobius looper which is similar to the Gibson Echoplex that I used to own. The mobius doesn't work too well in Logic so that's why I don't use it there. It doesn't sync in Logic, but I think that it might in Mainstage. What I want to do is have one instance of guitar rig and 2 to 3 instances of the mobius looper.
Here is my question finally. Can I use my FCB1010 to control the distort, delay, and other various effects in Guitar rig 4 while playing loops in a Mobius looper. Then move to another looper, play more loops, then go the 3rd track and play over the loopers? I would need separate outs for each looper or guitar track, which I have with my Presonus Firebox. The whole time I would need to sync Mainstage with my friends master clock coming out of his I-Mac.
    Can this be done?
I know it sounds like a complicated set up, and maybe it is, if there is an easier way that has sync of the loopers, and I can run hands free with my one guitar, Presonus interface, and Behringer FCB1010 I would really like to know.
I find for some reason that I have crazy set ups that nobody has ever tried before. I'm hoping that is not the case with this.
Thank you for reading my long winded post and I hope to hear from you soon.
    Shawn

Well, are you using the looper tool in mainstage, or a different looper?
I'm thinking that there is a way to us guitar rig as my main sound source and route into other tracks (bussing it over) and have loopers enabled in those other tracks. That way I can lay down a rhythm in one track, move to the next track, do the same looping with a different guitar patch, move to the 3rd track and play with even a different sound while the other loops are going in the first two tracks.
Is that what you do? Do you play live and have synced to another source?
    Thank you,
    Shawn

  • Simple question: using mainstage as sound module AND run multi tracks live

i want to play live, using my mac book pro, mainstage as a sound module while running several (audio) outputs/tracks at the same time. is this possible and how is it done? i don't want to change to ableton live! thx a bunch everyone!

If doing vocals and latency is a problem, you can also experiment with taking your live (dry) signal direct (if you interface allows this) into your mix, which will be zero latency. Live signal also goes through MainStage to apply effects such as reverb and delay, and you feed the wet only signal to a separate "vocal fx" mix channel.
Of course, you can't apply plug-in based eq and compression to the realtime signal (or your back to the latency problem), you would have to rely on hardware/mixer for that. I have experimented with this method with good results...
Others have reported not being bothered by the amount of vocal latency, but I wonder...

  • MainStage 3 question

Is there a way my guitar effects can be automatically switch according to the selection of a backing track without foot pedals or manual switching?

    Well...it could be done
you must use midi tracks (on a DAW for example). I have done it for test purposes.
You could use Mainstage like you do it now and each patch assign a Program Change and in the DAW (logic for example) at the time you want just insert a program change to the number of the Mainstage patch. Another way is to insert a comand change (assign to the next patch) at the time you want and it will change the patch in Mainstage to the next one at that precision time. Just ensure that you have incoming program changes from the logic.
    Hope not to complicated
    good luck

  • Mainstage Loopback Control Question

Good morning to all. Are there other hardware solutions which control Loopback besides for the *Apogee GiO Guitar Interface* which would allow one to step on a switch to record, play, etc? I have looked in a few places and have not been able to come up with a viable solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You are not too clear as to what the problem is.
Do you mean that you ask MainStage to learn the FCB settings for each patch you create in MS?
Do you mean that you have several different patch settings in FCB that you want MainStage to learn?
Whichever one you mean, the result for you is the same. MainStage will only learn one set of controller settings for a Concert. These settings are used to control every Patch in every Set. The same FCB control can be set up to control any parameter in a patch.
    e.g.
Patch 1 controller 3 could be set to change the chorus rate.
Patch 2, controller 3 could be set to adjust part of the EQ.
Patch 3, controller 3 could be set to adjust a volume.
    The possibilities are almost endless

  • Guitar Question - How do the amp in Logic 9/ Mainstage 2 compare?

I am a new Logic 9 user and I am currently exploring the amps / effects in Logic 9 / Mainstage 2. I am wondering if the community has any comments or feedback on how the amps and effects sound both recorded and live compared to other vendors such as Fractal Audio (Axe FX) or Line 6 or NI Guitar Rig? Just wondering if anyone can tell me how much "feel" and "responsiveness" I can expect from the amps in Logic 9 versus some of the other players in the market.
I am really looking for the best tube amp modeler in terms of feel and controlability from the guitar's volume and tone knobs. I feel like the Line 6 stuff sounds pretty good, but ofers limited control and feel from the guitar. I hear the Fractal Axe FX is supposed to be very good this way. Anyone ever compare these kinds of tools to Logic 9?
Thanks I hope to hear back!

To get an idea of how effective the amps & FX are, try the Guitar Rigs template in MainStage. Some of these are very good.
However, by using Channel EQ into a bus containing Stereo Delay & Space Designer I get a very good clean sound somewhere between a Fender tube amp & a small Mesa-Boogie.
Add one or more of the Pedal Board Overdrive units (plus a wah if you like the sound) & you can create some very good overdrive/distortion FX.
I like Logic's FX & can get some very impressive results with them. I have spent quite a lot of time getting to know them.
Explore the presets & some of the demo songs then sit down & start to use the FX.

  • File types for Playback in MainStage 3?

I have some questions about utilizing Playback in Mainstage 3.  What types of files can I load into the Playback interface?  Does it ONLY take .WAV files?  I would really like to import mp3's or complete songs into Playback so I can play along without having to use iTunes.  If it only takes waves, then I have to save songs in that format, which would require very large files.  Any thoughts?
Also, can I have different patches within my concert that each have a different file in Playback?  For example, can I create a dozen different patches within the same concert, and have each one contain a different file in Playback?  If not, then I would probably have to create a seperate concert for each one which isn't really ideal.
I know I can use Playback for loops, song components, etc. - and I understand that perfectly well.  I just want to also utilize it to play along/practice with songs from my library, and I'm not sure if it's really the best way to do that.
    Thanks!

Wave, AIFF, CAF, AAC, and - I think - also MP3.
Yes, each patch can have a channel strip with a playback instance with it's own file.

  • A few questions for a new setup

    Hi All,
I've been wanting to set up Main Stage to replace a hardware synth of mine (Korg Micro X) as I am limited by the 25 note key range. I've set up the whole gig (concert) with split patches etc and it sounds great. I'm using my NORD Electro 2 as a MIDI keyboard. The thing is, that I want to use some of the sounds from the NORD as they sound much better than the software synth versions. I think I have figured out a way around this by having a concert level audio channel which my NORD goes into and out to the main output. I've also mapped a foot controller to solo this channel (as sometimes I want to hear just the NORD and not the software synths which are mapped over the same keys). I've similarly mapped a button on the NORD to mute the NORD channel so that I only hear the software synth.... (phew)
Now, the problem is that if I have the mute switch ON, and then I solo the NORD track, it works fine. Once I release the solo pedal (I have to hold it down while I play), the NORD channel doesn't fully mute again. It attenuates but not fully mutes. To fully mute I have to un-mute the channel and re-mute. Is there any way around this???
Another question, is there any way that you can turn OFF some midi signals?? Or put another way, tell Main Stage to ignore certain MIDI signals? Some of the NORD buttons are transmitting information to Main Stage by default. I.e. when I select a preset patch on the NORD, it jumps to a certain patch in Main Stage and I don't want it to do this.
I know it's a lot of information but I would appreciate any information.
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    P.S. I'm running Main Stage 1.0.2

I haven't tried this, but one way around this might be to teach MainStage about the offending button.
Set up a new button in MS Layout & 'Learn' your patch change to it.
Having done that, disable the new button in Edit.
If you set this up at Concert level, it ought to prevent any patch change messages getting through to the rest of MainStage.

  • How do I set up different hardware controls for different patches in mainstage?

I'm using Mainstage 3.0.4 and a Novation Impulse.
I created a concert, with the drawbar organ as my first and most important patch. I assigned the hardware controls on the Novation exactly how I wanted them, with the sliders controlling the drawbars, and the rotary controls changing the distortion, reverb, etc. It was perfect. I was happy.
Then I added a new instrument (a new patch, not a new channel or anything like that), a Wurlitzer. Once again I assigned my hardware controllers as I wanted them, and was happy with that.
When I saved the concert, and went back to my organ patch, my settings didn't stay the same, but they still work for the Wurli.
My question is this - do I have to have a new concert for each instrument patch I want to use, if I need to assign different controllers for each patch? This would be stupid! If not, what I am doing wrong, that I can only set up one set of hardware controls per concert, instead of per patch?
Thank you in advance for the help!!!

CCTM, thank you! I have a small idea what you mean, but I still can't implement it :-)
    You have some fundamental choices:
    A) If you want to see Drawbar Controls for organ Patches, and then have other types ( knobs/sliders etc) for other Patches, you could simply make all the screen controls you need, then assign and map them as required.
    B) you could simply use drawbar screen controls only and remap them to other parameters for non-organ patches
    C) You could use Smart Controls ( which will update their appearance in a 'smart' way
    D) You could make your own Drawbar type controls using standard faders
The basic process in a 2 part thing:
Assign incoming MIDI messages from your controller to Screen Controls in Layout mode. This is global for concert. Per patch ( or Set or globally for the Concert) you then map the Screen Controls to parameters for each patch as needed.
Smart Control MIDI assignment is done in the Assignments and Mappings pane

  • How to use at the same time the audio sounds of a keyboard & the midi sounds with mainstage

Hello! hope you can shed some light on my problem! I want to be able to use at the same time the real sounds of korg sv-1(stage keyboard, but it could be any stage piano with USB midi) and use other sounds from mainstage. Of course i switch between patches and sets with a footpedal so i can be quick with my changes of sounds so I try to keep my hands on the keys.
My question is: Is there a way that one moment for example i have a silend patch (from mainstage) and the real sound i want passing through audio and the next moment silence from korg and the next patch a sound from mainstage? Or even combine them. I mean in general how am I able to integrate the sounds I prepared and organised in patches in mainstage with the beautiful piano & rhode sounds of my sv-1?
thanx in advance for your response!

Yes. To have a silent Mainstage patch, simply do not create any instrument channel strips. To have the SV-1 silent on a patch you should be able to set and save the volume for that patch to 0. As an alternative you could turn local off on the SV-1( this function will reset to local on after the SV-1 has been turned off). With local off you can determine with each Mainstage patch whether or not you want to transmit MIDI to the external instrument(SV-1) channel strip. If you have local on, be careful not to create a MIDI feedback/loop with the SV-1. This is a lot of info to digest at once, so take it slowly, step by step. Snapshots below are somewhat in order.
Click on the cog wheel in the upper right corner of the channel strips section to get to this menu. Select add external instrument channel strip.
The external channel instrument strip will look like this.
Click on the MIDI output box to show the display below and choose your external keyboard destination(SV-1).
In the channel strip inspector you can send patch changes to the SV-1.
Here is where you select the MIDI input for routing MIDI to the SV-1. If want no SV-1 sound for this Mainstage patch, select none.
You'll need to play with these parameters to get the desired results. Stepping through the MS patches with a footswitch can be done, too, but that can wait for now. Post another question when you master these steps.

  • How do I uninstall all loops and samples in Mainstage?

I'm using Mainstage 2 on my MacBook Air.  I don't use garage band and I don't use any of the samples or loops that came with it.  Y'all might think I'm crazy for wanting to delete all that, but it's just that my hard drive real estate is quite limited.  I know it's pretty amazing stuff, but I don't use it and the space is more valuable to me.
I love Mainstage just as a controller interface.  I use it with our worship band.  I don't use any of the amp sims that came with it, cuz I use S-Gear, which I like a lot better.  I really use it just to set up my rig.  I don't use anything other than my amp sims with it (I also have Guitar Rig and Amplitube Fender).
So, I found some helpful info on locating the folders that contain the samples:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22576511#22576511
These appear to be the main folders that contain the data:
    ~Library/Audio/Apple Loops
    ~Library/Application Support/Logic/EXS Factory Samples/Drum Kit Designer
    ~Library/Application Support/Garageband
I do have several questions, before I proceed:
    1. When I downloaded Mainstage, it was something like 30 GB.  Yikes.  Most of that, it is my understanding, was samples and loops.  From research on this forum, I'm gathering that the above files should have about 15 GB of "stuff."  When I look in my folders, it's only about 3 GB.  Am I missing something? I want to get all of this stuff.
    2. Will Mainstage still run alright with all of that gone?  I don't want to create instability or hangs or crashes, etc.
    3. ALSO, I don't use Garage Band at all.  If I delete that, will it introduce any instability with Mainstage? I know they share a lot of the same files.  I "think" it should be fine, but I don't want to assume.
I LOVE Mainstage.  It would have been a steal without all the sample libraries and loops.  I know people will think I'm some kind of a nut for deleting that stuff, but what can I say?
THANK YOU in advance. I really appreciate it.
    Tesgin

You may be experiencing delays if your external drive is a USB. I tried this for a bit and quickly switched to a "fast" firewire drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • What applescript do I use to trigger to play a video in quicktime or itunes from MainStage 3?

I am new to Mainstage 3... I have made a karaoke video to play along with live in logic pro x and can easily play along with a full screen video there, but want a program that is processing less so less can go wrong...  I bounce the video (+10 or so tracks) to a .mov file, and would like it to play when I press play on Mainstage 3.  I would then like to play and sing with that in Mainstage 3 with 2-3 inputs live (as opposed to the 10 or so audio tracks in logic (with plugins running) and the video with 2-3 live inputs it would be cleaner and easier for my macbook pro)...
In complete honesty I have the tracks beatmapped in logic and would like Mainstage to keep that info as well, but after I've messed with Mainstage I sadly don't think that is what Mainstage was designed for...
Anyways I've scowered all over the internet and it appears the only way to get Mainstage to play a video is by writing some applescript that triggers a midi event that tells quicktime/itunes to play a .mov file... I have no idea why the ability is not just given to mainstage, but at least there is supposedly a work around...
I have little experience with mainstage and no experience with applescript...
What code do I put in the scripter to make a .mov file play a full screen (on second screen) when I press play in Mainstage 3?
    Is that even right?
    system specs-
    OS X 10.8.4
    Mainstage 3.0.1
    Logic Pro X 10.0.3
(I don't care what player i use but these are the ones I have to work with)
    (preferred) Quicktime Player 10.2
    Itunes 11.0.5
    VLC 2.0.8
I have messed around with the applescript editor in my utilities, and looked at some in the app store, but none of them have direct answers that I have found by google-fu-ing..
The only other option would be to manually press play, fullscreen, then switch back to Mainstage 3... I MC and that takes a lot more time/energy/focus than simply pressing the play button in Mainstage 3 (seriously why doesn't it play videos?)...
A lot of info, requirements, and questions I know, but when the video is not playing I would like to have my desktop showing (I put drink specials, future gigs, advertisments on a picture slideshow as the desktop on the second monitor)
If all this works it will be epic
Worst case I'll stick with Logic X
    Please help

ALOT of us are attempting to do this VERY thing!
I have searched high and low for information, even attempted using MS current scripts and modifying them.
I have a sneaky feeling that MS scripts are somehow different than a typical Applescript.

If anyone can pipe in here, that HAS actually accomplished this, the cheque is in the mail!!

  • Will Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo perform well enough with Mainstage.

    Hi there,
I normally keep each of my macs for about 4-5 years before upgrading, and its about that time for me. I currently have a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB Ram, and am leaning towards getting a new 27 inch imac for my home studio. My alternative is getting the 15 inch mac book pro retina, which I could still hook up to a large display at home, but also use for live performances.
My question is has anyone had any experience running Mainstage (2 or 3) on a Core 2 Duo, and does it run it well enough to process reverb and maybe chorus for one vocalist, and a couple of guitar effects for an acoustic guitar?
The reason I'm leaning towards the iMac, is because my configuration will likely be $400-600 less expensive than the macbook pro retina, the size of the screen, and the ease of not having to plugging a laptop into all my peripherals whenever I enter my studio. This will only be viable however, if my macbook pro is capable of handling mainstage duties.
A couple of notes, I'm aware I can always get a external monitor for a macbrook pro, but am interested to hear anyone elses experience with either an intel core 2 duo running Mainstage, or your experience using an iMac vs a Macbook pro for your home studio.
    Thanks in advance!

I have a mid-2009 MBP with a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of RAM and MainStage 3.0.1 runs very well.  I recently played a pit orchestra job with Alicia's Keys as my primary piano sound from within MainStage and there were no problems (I did alias the patch throughout the show but that's just good resource useage).
I suspect you would have a similar experience on your current hardware.  Buy MainStage and try it out.  Its only $30 or so and you can run it on any Mac you own so you really won't waste the money.
    Good luck!
