Mainstage is killing me!
I have been using mainstage since august touring professionally. Here's my big issue. I occasionally get a few patches that flat out won't play. I know my midi, it has nothing to do with that. The only solusion seems to be to restart mainstage and reload the set. I only have about 15 patches though many of the plugs are NI. My memory indicator is not maxed. How can I rectify this? Frankly I had fewer issues with Brainspawn Forte on my old system.
Part 2: Is there a feature request protocol for mainstage? I really think each VI channel strip should have assignable midi channels.
Has anyone else experienced this or is my shiny new macbook pro a problem? BTW, I have checked internal volume settings on the plugs, nothing seems out of place. It does seem to be the last few on the list though. I'm going to try rearranging them and see if it"s always the last ones that don't load properly. I have heard several people complain of the patch that takes a few key presses before it sounds. Sometimes my patches behave that way as well. Any more stabs at an answer?

SO, new macbook pro, and logic runs like a dream, 10 instruments, 20 tracks, all is well...
However, mainstage is killing me. I can see the amazing potential, but the CPU keeps spiking, literally when I try to loopback 1 instrument. It is ridiculous. I'm verging on submitting to Ableton, help me please!
RobinDid you check the I/O buffer size in Preferences/Audio? It can well be, that small buffers like 32 frames may screw the show. Which instruments are you using? MS in single threaded, so everything is processed on a single core.

Starting and stopping a drum loop in MainStage
Hi, i've just started using Mainstage 2.1.2 and I'm setting up a B3/bass/drums split to accompany a vocalist. I'm trying to put in a drum loop from studio drummer which I use from Native Instruments. My issue is I need to be able to setup an action where I use a command on my keyboard (button or key or pedal to initiate a stop on the drums and then start them again when i choose....for instance for a bass solo, or even to kill the drums at the end of the tune). I succeeded in doing an action which muted it but i need it to stop so that when the vocalist comes in again the drums will be in time. i.e starting the drums again will just be like starting the track from scratch rather than have it running silently in the background which is what the mute/unmute does. Hope this makes sense and any help would be grealy appreciated.
Hi
One would normally set up either MIDI CC or Host Automation within Kontakt to do this, but it would seem that you cannot control the 'Play' button of the MIDI grooves within the NI Drummer series.
To work around this, you could bounce the 'Drummer' groove to audio (in Logic, Garageband etc) and the use a Playback plugin within Mainstage to actually perform.
Hidden benefits would be that Playback will use considerably less RAM that Kontakt with Studio Drummer.

Help with Mainstage 3 RAM (12GB!!!)
I have a mid2010 iMac (iMac11,2) running Mavericks with 12GB RAM, yet it is unable to run mainstage 3 because of memory issues. I'm using the program for a pit orchestra, so I have over 40 unique patches, and because they need to be ordered and changed quickly, I have 100 "patches" on mainstage. I am using a lot of Kontakt 5 (NI New York Grand Piano, Project SAM concert harp, Project SAM truestrike, NI session strings, and NI Vintage Organs) How on earth can I make this playable, because right now, this setup is unpredictable, glitchy, and unusable in a live setting.
ANY help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Thank youWow - you're pushing that thing hard!
Mkae sure you have good airflow, of course. Also make sure that you're only running MainStage and have elminiated all other bottlenecks. I have a separete user account for perfomances that loads as little as possible.
Also, check into this list from the good people that write QLab. It has some good tips for squeeing out all the juice you can. Some are intended from using a Mac for projection, but you get the idea...
Ensure Screen Savers never start.
Turn of the translucent menu bar - this isn't a big deal, but every bit of graphics power counts, and that effect uses graphics resources.
Turn off all keyboard shortcuts for things like Mission Control, Exposé, Dashboard, etc. Also turn off Hot Corners.
Add the system hard drive and any hard drives used for media to the Privacy pane of Spotlight preferences. Spotlight indexes the files on your disk periodically, and if that happens during a show, the disk access could cause a bottleneck when you're trying to read media files for playback.
Turn off any Universal Access assistance.
Set all CD and DVD automatic options to "ignore".
Configure displays.
Set all Energy Saver preferences (battery and power adapter) to Never, and uncheck "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible".
Kill extraneous keyboard shortcuts and mouse/trackpad gestures.
Set the Sound alert volume to mute, turn off user interface sound effects and volume feedback.
Remove any network devices that aren't used during the show.
Turn off Bluetooth.
Turn off Sharing of anything.
Remove any unnecessary applications from the Login Items pane of the Users preferences.
Turn off automatic time updates.
Turn off automatic Software Updates and checks for updates.
Turn off Time Machine. -
Ever since upgrading to OS X mavericks I get choppy audio on mainstage no matter what i/o latency settings are used.
I started having the issue with mainstage 2 last night, and decided to upgrade to ms3 because I'd been wanting to for a while anyways and wanted to see if it would resolve the issue. Other issues that had been persistent in apps like imovie seem to have been resolved so I was hoping for the best.
Nothing. I don't know what to do. I am using an i5 imac with 16 GB of RAM and a scarlett 18i6 interface. The interface works in all other applications so I highly doubt it's the culprit.
Any ideas?hmm... a quick search on "switchboard" doesn't look good. It sounds like old Adobe auto-updating software. I hate autoupdaters for this very reason - they start doing stuff when you don't want them to. I'd uninstall it. Kill it in Activity Monitor if necessary, same with chrome helper if it's listed as unresponsive. This will only quit them. Then try to uninstall the switchboard thing if you can, using the provided uninstaller if there is one.
Then restart your machine and see if that helps. -
EXS losing saved patches in Mainstage
This is weird. First off, I love Mainstage. It's working VERY well at church as our live keyboard rig. However, I'm having an odd issue. We mostly use EXS24's and every so often when we load up the concert and pick a patch from the list, the sound is the default sine wave instead of what we saved it as in the EXS. So we have to load up the sound in the EXS and save it all over again in the concert. Any ideas? Anyone experiencing this? It's like the EXS24 is losing it's memory. Weird.
I can confirm that this happens to me too... usually it happens after I do something such as pasting a patch into the current set or concert.
Seems to be a memory problem...
it's reproducable here. just open two new concerts from existing templates, then copy/paste, or drag drop a bunch of patches at one.
No error message, but going back to one of the existing patches plays back the sinewave...
if it's an existing patch, going back to the inspector and reselecting the patch brings it "back".
this is a killer problem for patch management, mix and matching between sets/concerts for me...
at least we're not alone in having this problem... -
2.2 bug? Mainstage not recognizing external stereo inputs
Using Mainstage 2.2 when instantiating a stereo external instrument, only the left channel is being recognized and it is mono. Have tried using a motu ultralite, motu 828 MKII, and a profire 2626, in all instances, adding a stereo external instrument ony the left channel is recognized and is mono. Any one else having this problem. Seems like a pretty big one. Not a problem is your just using a mono guitar or vocal input, but for trying to process stereo external gear, this is a problem.
Anyone else?

Motu 828 MKIIHey guys! ...(new here, but been a frequent reader for a looong time)
Having the same problems here.... and more?! (Ultralite mk3)
I `upgraded` my rig with the new MBP 13` ( i7), late last year, but haven`t had the time to set it up until now.... But we need to keep these threads alive ..
Looking all over forums for information about this now.
Luckily I had a bakcup of MS2.1.2 on a timemachine disk... (2.1.2 wich for me is still the latest working version of Mainstage... 2.1.3 acutally nearly killed me onstage hanging B3`s and not looping samples ... felt really good that night.. haha!!
The CPU meter running wild is also strange... When running 2.1.2 on my new MBP Its looking really good ..
And of course I opened some of my most used MS sessions in 2.2 ... and made them unusable for 2.1.2 when I had to go back... no problem really, because I keep my backups close and updated, but still a `bad design` issue
What I haven`t seen anyone complain about yet ,is that the "My Templates" and "Save as Template" is gone!! .. or am I going blind?!... I have a couple of different Templates for my different gear setups and my templates was a timesaver..
I`m joining in on the "FIX IT APPLE" chanting! .. Since the 2.1.3 buggy update was never fixed until we `had to buy` the even more useless 2.2 , I feel I`m loosing my rock solid faith in Apple.
Sad but true!

Can MainStage receive Bank Change for more than 127 patches ?
Hi,
The clue is in the title!
I need to be able to select between approx. 240 patches from a Digital Console.
Possible ? And if so - how ?
Thanks in advance,
JonThanks for explaining the need --- sounds like a good reason to me.
I wonder if you could create an Apple script that could listen for bank and program changes and then (A) use the bank to make MainStage load a concert and then set the patch? I have no idea what Applescript support exists in MainStage but if there isn't any, then you could always use brute force so that the Applescript first kills MainStage and then 'open' the desired concert to open MainStage again....then send the patch change via IAC.
Only problem with that solution is it would be rather slow.....a real hack! -
MainStage crashed my Mac?
Hi all, I just experienced something strange and I am wondering if anyway knows what could have happened.
I rehearsing live with my band, using the latest MainStage 2, and while playing a certain song (ok that song is weird, it has multiple effect, and so much noise that the VU are all in the red.) After playing the song, OS X is dying, MainStage seems to have quit, even my Dock has disappeared. Only my mouse and my wallpaper are there. I reboot, and everything is back to normal.
We finish our set, and then play that MainStage killer again. Same thing happened, but that time, a reboot didn't helped. My Mac won't restart, it hanged just after the Apple logo. I first thought of a hardware failure, but reinstalling Snow Leopard fixed my problem.
I should add that I have bought and extra GB of Ram prior to that. It's a MacBook Pro that had 2GB, and I changed one 1GB chip with a "cheap" 2GB chip. But that shouldn't be crappy memory.
Anyone knows what could have happened? Is this a MainStage bug, a 3GB limitation, my extra GB, or just a crazy song that I should never play again? Maybe playing in 64-bit could fix that?
Thanks
SteveTo test and help narrow down the problem, I would suggest...
1. Removing the "cheap" 2GB chip and put your 1 back in.
2. Launch Mainstage and play that "Mainstage killer" (good phrase ;)) again and see if you get the same behaviour.
If you can't duplicate the problem, then it suggests it's the memory. If it happens again with the old (good) chip in, then at least you know what it's not and start looking for the problem elsewhere.
As for 64 bit, this only applies when your addressing memory over 4GB. -
IPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail
*iPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail*
Ok, I upgraded to 4.2 and deleted all previous backups, so I know I'm screwed untill the next update.
I've synced, backed up, restored from backup and still no "Visual Voicemail".
My voicemail only works if I restore the phone to original settings. But if I do that, I loose important data in my apps. As soon as I "Restore From Backup" I loose my "Visual Voicemail".
If I reset my voicemail password with AT&T, I get the screen to set up a new password and greeting in Visual Voicemail. When I go through these steps I get the spinning wheel "Saving".
It never saves, and I get an alert that says it can't connect to voicemail.
I can set up voicemail by dialing "1", but then all I see is a blank screen in my "Visual Voicemail".
I've also tried a full reset of my voicemail with AT&T.
I even got a new SIM card. That didn't work.
Can anybody figure this one out???
-ThanksWell, thats the first time I've been told that after a week of phone calls. Maybe it's possible.
I forgot to backup my phone before I upgraded to 4.2. Oops!
When I noticed my Visual Voicemail was gone I tried to backup but ran out of memory.
So I deleted previous backups to make more room. It backed up fine after that.
I don't think it ran out of memory during the update, but maybe it did.

I think you mean that MS will not open because it is set to open the previous project (which crashes), or MS will just 'plain' not open?
I'd try "Trashing" the MS preferences (remove it from the Preferences folder then restart MS);
com.apple.mainstage.plist
Your preferences live in
Macintosh HD:<USER>:Library:Preferences
The User Library is hidden by default in Lion and M Mion: Use the Finder:Go menu whilst holding down Option to get there

How do i use one midi controller and ignore another in Mainstage 2.1?
I am running Mainstage and Ableton Live in parallel and use two midi controllers. I would like the APC40 to just be recognized by Live, and my MPK49 to be recognized by Mainstage and Live. Right now, I get midi signal from Mainstage on both midi controllers and can't seem to figure out how to assign just Mainstage to just get midi input from the MPK49. Any ideas? Thanks.
Yes, that worked a the device popups were set to all. Fixed that and moved on. Thanks! However another similar problem has come up...
The sliders on the APC40 (which I just want to be recognized by Live), are affecting the Mainstage Channel Strips volume sliders. I can't seem to figure how to make Mainstage ignore this as all of the APC40 sliders are effecting Channel Strip 1. Thanks. -
Earlier tonight, I saw the balloon from Creative Cloud stating that an update was available. So I installed it. Half-way during the installation, my windows desktop disappeared.
I started the task manager and restarted "Explorer.exe". That made the background reappear, but the taskbar was blank with just the lone Windows 8.1 icon on the very left. Hovering over the taskbar showed the wait cursor.
The task manager showed everything was running normally but the desktop was clearly broken. I checked the directories and everything was as expected.
So I held my breath and rebooted. After logging in, the desktop slowly appeared over about 10 minutes, but all the desktop icons were still missing, as were the taskbar icons. Only a few of the notification icons appeared.
I then managed to bring up a command window with the task manager (fortunately, Ctrl+Alt+Esc still worked) and launched System Restore (rstrui.exe). It showed me the Adobe Creative Cloud was the most recent restore point (below); the previous restore point after that was a Microsoft Windows update from 2 days ago. When I asked for the list of files that were affected by the Creative Cloud update and would be reverted, it showed this:
I again held my breath and restored my machine to before the above CC update; after about 20 minutes of shucking and jiving and a reboot, everything was working properly again.
So there is clearly something out of kilter with this latest update. Adobe the Time Vampire has once again stolen 2 hours of my life, but this time, at least it wasn't a license server issue. I think.Dave: I did the Microsoft Update two days before this happened, and rebooted as required. I just created a new restore point and lauched Creative Cloud. Now I get the famous white screen:
It just sits and spins (been 10 minutes now).
Fortunately, I saved away this command (which I've had to use 4 or 5 times already):
del %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\opm.db
Unfortunately now, I get this (even after closing the above window):
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
So I killed everything that said "Adobe" in the task manager and this time, the command succeeded.
Fortunately, the current apps seem to still work. I can't seem to find the "Creative Cloud" app in the applications on my system, but I launched Photoshop CC, told it to look for updates, and got a list of the 5 prgorams that need updates in the Adobe Application manager:
I will proceed with the updates, holding my breath. -
Killing an application running on RT
Hi
Am using an PXI -8186 embedded controller with PharLap ETS RTOS, i have downloaded an application on to the RT startup directory. I want to deleted the application as i dont need it, but as it automatically starts running when pxi boots up i am unable to delete it. How can i Kill the application and delete it from startup? The rtos does not have a promt, so i can kill the task or look in to directory.
I have to use only Ftp. can any one please help.
thanx
ArunHello!
On your 8186 there is a disable start up VI switch. On page 2-12 of the manual you will be able to find the location of this switch. Just incase I have pasted the link to the manual below.
http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/370747c.pdf
After you disable the start VI you will be able to remove it. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can give you anymore assistance.

What does it happen if killing app then fast startup?
Ask this question dues to my app is very likely to crash if I kill the app then restart it very fast. My debugging shows that when you double click back button then kill app, you see app really disappear, in fact it is still running, needs some time to exit completely. Then if you start up it very fast, app will re-access original dying app, instead of launch a new process, then it will be very likely to crash.
It is not difficult to reproduce it on either device or simulator, the reason is my app running under heavy thread pool (C++ boost implementation), normally it will need some time to destroy the pool (waiting all working threads to join).
I am not sure whether it is system behavior? Does user need to wait for a few seconds after killing app? Or how can I avoid it on application layer? Thank you. You've posted your question in the iPhoto for iOS forum, but iPhoto for iOS is not compatible with an iPod touch. Are you trying to "edit" an album in the the Photos application?
