Mainstage & Yamaha Motif 8

I have my yamaha motif 8 hooked into my Mac, but Mainstage 3 is only recognizing the midi interface as the device in the screen control inspector. Also, Mainstage is recognizing the notes I am playing (on the top center bar-not sure what's it's called), but there is no audio coming through.
I am able to hook up my M-Audio Oxygen8 and play through that with no problem. So I think it may be something in the setup configuration of my board or Mainstage.

If Mainstage is recognizing MIDI data, it's connected properly. The MIDI interface you're using to connect the Motif can be renamed in Audio MIDI Setup(apps>utilities). For convenience, I usually name the USB MIDI cable or other interface after the keyboard it's connected to for easy reference. Are you getting no audio from the Motif or from Mainstage or both when you play the Motif? Are you trying to play Mainstage channel strips with the Motif? If so, make sure a channel strip is assirgned to it. Where is the audio out from the Motif connected?
See the snapshot below. Is the Motif assigned to the channel strip? Select an instrument channel strip. In edit mode>instrument channel strip inspector>MIDI input, see what keyboard is assigned.

  • Yamaha MOTIF 6 and iMac 27 (2014)

I Own a Yamaha MOTIF 6 Workstation (Keyboard but I dont play keyboard)) and would like to use its sound engine to play GarageBand or any other MIDI file I can access.  I'm not sure how to get the iMac and MOTIF to talk to each other so what I produce on the iMac will play through the MOTIF sound engine. Do I need a MIDI sequencer App?  Any MOTIF users out there who have done this? I'm new at his so any help would be useful.  Ultimatley I'll play the sound through an awesome Mackie PA and create a virtual band to jam with. Thanks in advance. Jerry

Thanks, I think I got it working now
I have a feeling that this shouldn't be this hard, but maybe after a few days I really understand what's going on under the hood. For what it's worth, here's my current setup.
    MOTIF:
Using one patch, a performance patch in MASTER mode
    Knob/Slider mode set to Zone
Each Performance part is sending MIDI data in Channel 1
Each knob and slider has its own MIDI CC assigned. Knobs 40-43 and Sliders 50-53
Saved this MASTER mode patch to memory slot 128 and named it so that stands out for live playing with MS
(There are tons of other settings, but I don't think they are relevant to this so I try to keep this short)
    MainStage 3:
Started with a fresh Electric Piano template (=concert)
Assigned knobs and sliders in Edit mode
    Assigned footswitch to "Next Patch"
    Saved this for future setups
Now all knobs and sliders control only setting in MS, which is what I tried to accomplish in the first place. I think main stage manuals do a good job explaining what everything does, but I'm still looking for best practises, demo videos and so on -- i.e. what I should do.
So for now, I'm sticking with my keyboard, unless the urge to buy Korg Kronos X becomes unbearable

  • How can I use the sounds of the Yamaha Motif XF6 in Logic Pro 9?

I have Logic Pro 9 on my Mac Book. I also have a Yamaha Motif XF 6 synthesizer. Instead of using Logic's software instruments I would like to record the sounds of the Motif directly into Logic.
I have been told that an audio interface is necessary for this. What kind of audio interface would be good for this? Any in particular?
And, once I have obtained the interface, what steps do I need to take to hook up the Motif into Logic to utilize the Motif's sound bank?
Detailed steps would help, as this is new stuff for me.
    Thanks!

Since this is a user forum only, and your questions will take a lot of time to answer you might want to check both the Logic manual and the XF6 manual. The XF6 has possibilities such that you may not need and Audio interface if the Firewire option is present.
Also you have a built in USB MIDI interface as well, you will need to download the Yamaha MIDI driver.
Read Exploring Logic Pro, especially chapter five, you can record your performance via MIDI, edit it and then commit to audio.
    Dig in.

  • Using  Yamaha  Motif  8  on  G.Band 1

I am trying to use my Yamaha Motif 8 in Garage Band.
I can get it to work, but it only plays limited Garage Band effects.
Also, when playing on Motif 8, its not quite as loud over the Imac
as it is when I bring up a G.Banb keyboard and click one of those keys with my mouse.
I'd really just like to play all the Motif 8's effects in G.Band.
Is there maybe a more up to date version or another program I need?

What do you mean by GB Effects? Do you mean GB instruments?
--- Yes, Garage Band instruments. I'd like "Motif 8" instrument sounds to come through Garage Band.

This is confusing. Are you trying to record sound shte Motif makes, OR are you trying to play GB instruments?

  • How do I get Logic Pro to recognize Yamaha Motif Rack XS MIDI Sounds

I have connected my Yamaha Motif Rack XS Tone Generator to the Logic Pro computer via USB and have installed the latest Yamaha Driver on the computer, as well.  I have enabled the USB TO HOST terminal of the Yamaha Motif Rack XS.  I am not able to find any trace of the Motif Rack in Logic Pro.
Has anyone successfully set up the Motif Rack XS with Logic Pro?

Make sure the power is off the irig and then plug it in.
took me a few tries, restarting the computer etc.  brand new Mavericks 13"

How have you connected your Motif to your Mac?
Midi both ways?  (What interface are you using?)
Are you using an external Instrument track in Logic to record and send midi data to and from Logic?
How are you recording the audio output of your Motif?
Have you conntected the audio output of your Motif to audio inputs of an audio interface (again if so, which interface) and created a Audio track in Logic to record the audio output?

  • Connecting Yamaha Motif XS8 Keyboard Workstation To Logic

    Hey everyone!
I am in a really really reeaaally deep hole. I just dropped $3000 and got a Yamaha Motif XS8. I know how to use Logic Pro 7, and I know how to use the Motif, but I have no idea on how to connect them and make them talk to each other. I basically want to record using the sounds in the Motif in Logic (in midi format, not audio) so i can see the notes on the screen and not record as audio files. I have my Motif hooked up with a fire wire and midi cable. I don't know what to do to make this work. I know it can be done. I have called several places, everyone says it can be done, but no one knows how and now i am finally turning to my fellow apple forum members. Lots of people use logic pro here unlike yamaha support or other places so i hope someone has an answer.
This is a very common thing to do, but very complicated, and no one seems to have an answer! =[
I have called everyone possible... woke up at 8 in the morning and made calls all morning. Not one person knew, not even the apple logic pro support guy.
    anyways
Thank You Very Much!! ---in advance!

Ok, it's not hard, and the detail will vary depending on what you want to do exactly, but here goes:
There are two basic things - communication between the keyboard and Logic, and communication from Logic to the keyboard.
Connect up MIDI cables going both ways - keyboard MIDI OUT to computer MIDI IN, and computer MIDI OUT and keyboard MIDI IN.
Run Logic, and play the keyboard - watch Logic's transport, and you should see MIDI activity as you play. Cool - that part's done!
For the second part, I'm assuming you want to use the Motif multitimbrally, ie you want to be able to sequence multiple tracks of different sounds coming from the Motif with Logic.
Open your autoload song, and open the environment. Select New -> MultiInstrument, name it "Motif". Click on all the little channel boxes in the multi to enable all 16 channels. Set the multi's port to the MIDI port that your Motif is connected on.
Back on the Motif, make sure you turn MIDI Local mode OFF (this divorces the keyboard from the Motif's sound engine - because we will be playing it through Logic) and put it into multi mode if necessary.
Now, back in the arrange, click hold on a track and select Motif -> Motif 01 to assign the Motif channel 1 sub-instrument to an arrange. As you play the keyboard, you should hear the Motif playing. You can now sequence away with Logic.
If you regularly sequence like this, assign all the 16 Motif sub-instruments to tracks, and save this as your autoload, so it always comes up like this when you start a new song.
Any queries or problems, post back and I'll try to help.
Does that help clarify things for you?

  • Yamaha Motif XS8 -  USB Midi to Logic 8 Express, anyone??

    Hi Everybody!
I have just purchased a Yamaha Motif XS8 to run with my Logic 8 Express.
The people at the store told me that I could set it up just like I had done with my midi controller through a USB straight into the Mac. But there is abso no sound, signal coming from the Motif.
How do I get the Motif to talk to the Mac via USB Midi?
The driver for the Motif is installed, and the mac can find it on the Mac's integrated Midi-setup. Cool. Fine.
    BUT...
Am I doing something wrong? Cause I can't get no signal from the Motif in Logic??
Can someone please explain how to set up a right set-up when you have a :
    Motif XS8 ->USB -> MacBook Pro/ With Logic 8-> USB- M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface?
I want to get to know the Motif with time and really "walk the walk" and learn as I go, but,
    some sound would be nice......
    Anyone??
Thanks in advance, anyone who can help......
    Best,
    Applecake

You are making 2 kinds of errors:
    1. you are recording in MIDI tracks whose task is to transmit all the data to external synths (just the way it's happening to you).
You have to use Intruments tracks and assign a Logic (or AU) instrument to each of them.
In this case the MIDI data will be forwarded to those and not to your Motif.
    2. the Motif USB interface is a MIDI interface; if you want to record the XS audio into Logic you will have to link the Firewire interface (that should be installed by default into the XS8) and install the right drivers (if nedeed).
Another way is to send the Motif audio into Mac using the audio outs via an audio interface.
BTW refer to the Motif manual to know more.
    cheers

  • Apogee Duet for iOS with Yamaha Motif XF

    Hey guys....
I am testing my new app for the iPhone (Neo-Soul Keys) and I happen to just buy the new Apogee Duet for iOS. I have been trying to get my Yamaha Motif XF8 to work with the unit via USB, but it doesn't seem to work through the Apogee Duet iOS, BUT it works flawless when plugged into the iPad or iPhone directly.
See attached image. You can CLEARLY see that the Yamaha Motif XF registeres with iOS and all is working fine, but when I connect my USB MIDI through my Apogee Duet iOS, I get nothing.
Apogee claims that the reason why it doesn't work is because the Yamaha Motif XF is not "USB Compliant." Well even if it isn't, shouldn't the Apogee Duet just pass the MIDI signal through.

Nope.   To put it bluntly Apple really screwed this up.  The opperating system has created serious headaches for musicians and it doen't look like it's going to be fixed anything time soon.

  • Yamaha Motif 8 drivers

I am trying to connect my Yamaha Motif 8 keyboard to my imac - OS 10.3.9.
The yamaha is for OS 9 and therefore I cannot install the software for the keyboard. Can anybody help me? OS 9 classic will not work either.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

check out www.yamahasynth.com for updated drivers
lots of Motif help is located at www.motifator.com as well.
you may have to update the software in the Motif as well (see yamahasynth.com for updates and a description of the process) for MIDI over USB to function correctly. USB connection is the easiest to work with and requires no external MIDI interfaces on your Mac.
    good luck.

  • Yamaha Motif MO8... Help!

I have Yamaha Motif MO8, how do i connect to GB and use as MIDI Controller?
I use M-Audio Keystation last time... and when i plug in, GB can detect....
I've install all the driver that i download from Yamaha.
My current connection for motif are using 1/4 inch from MO8 audio output to M-Audio USB Pre(audio interface).
    Please help.... Urgent!!!

    1. When you open 'Audio MIDI Setup' and click on 'MIDI' do you see something like this:
only identifying the Yamaha instead of the UM1 - and are the lines drawn as shown here?
    2. In the Yamaha's settings it might be worth trying setting 'Local Control' to off - this will mute the Yamaha's internal sounds (though in fact this may not make any difference to the MIDI out) - see p258 of the manual.
    3. This is a more likely cause of the problem: in the Yamaha's settings, set 'MIDI In/Out' to 'USB' (it very possibly defaults to the MIDI socket and you can't use both at once) - see page 259 of the manual.
(If you don't have the manual right-click on this link and choose 'Download...':
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/synth/MOTIFE1.pdf - I hope this is the right one, the site isn't wonderfully clear)

  • Logic Pro X and Yamaha Motif XS8

    Hi anyone...
I've not been impressed with the way my Motif XS8 interfaced with Cubase and am considering moving to Logic Pro X. Before I make the commitment to a) move operating system (Windows to iOS), b) purchase the new DAW and c) buy a Mac... can anyone advise on the following points?
1     Is the Yamaha Motif XS8 available as an 'external instrument' so that I can select from Logic which of the hundreds of voices plays on the XS8?
2     Is it possible to record audio and MIDI onto Logic from the XS8, and will I need an interface of some sort between the two?
3     How straightforward is it to hook the two up and get going? (I want to make music, not spend hours configuring stuff)
Any support, advice or opinions very much appreciated...

  • How to Import Yamaha Motif XS 8 Patch Names into Logic?

    Hello -
I am a new user of MAC plus Logic. I just installed Logic Studio with Apogee ensemble. The virtual instruments are working great and I am able to browse the patch names by banks and catagories. Just downloaded a logic patch file from yamaha site for my Motif XS 8 Synthesizer. The has a .LSO extention. When I click on the file, the logic environment window opens up and I can see the patches. How do I import these patches into my project environment.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Open up the source song, the one you downloaded with the environment (old Logic songs were *.lso files).
You'll probably see an environment window, showing a multiinstrument - it's this that has the bank messages and the patch names defined.
Select the multiinstrument, and edit -> copy.
    Now close that song.
Open up your default startup template song (the "destination" song), open the environment on a layer of your choosing, and select edit -> paste, to paste that multi-instrument into the environment of this song.
Change the MIDI port on that multi-instrument so it's sending to the port your hardware is connected to. Close the environment window, and resave the song as your startup template.
(You may wish to preassign the 16 multi-instrument sub MIDI channels to arrange tracks if you are regularly sequencing them, to save time so these are already assigned to tracks when you start.)
Now for every song you start, it will have your setup for the Motif.
    Does that help?

  • Logic Pro 8 and Yamaha Motif multipart editor

    Hello,
I would really appreciate any help on this matter. I'm trying to connect my motif rack es to Logic and i've been scratching my head for last hour or so. My multipart editor is running - i can control it with my 01x, everything seems to be fine - the MBP, 01x and motif communicate ok, but.. How do i set which channel I want to use in Logic? Do I use a external instrument track? Do I have to get into the environment and mess with that? Seems hard comparing to Cubase... I know it can't be that hard, it's probably my inexperience with Logic. Any help would be nice

follow this thread over @ motifator.com. It's specific to Logic 7, but the principles will "close enough" to solve this for you.
    http://www.motifator.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=1,2,4&Board=Logic&Number=308847 &page=5&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
I've an actual ES8 instead of the Motif ES Rack. Seems like you have mLAN running otherwise you can't talk to the o1x... Am I correct on this? Are you using USB to talk MIDI between the mac and the ES Rack? if so, then you should be able to get this running. How are you getting audio from the ES Rack into the mac?
The regular ES exposes 8 virtual MIDI ports when using the USB port for everything that's not audio. I've got port 1 for regular note/on off data. My ES also works as a controller for Logic, so that's on a different port (4, I believe). The Multi-part editor would go on 3, although I don't use it. Port 2 (again this is a virtual MIDI port, not "channel") was reserved for for plug-in synth cards (with the classics and ES had room for in them).
Anyway, I glanced at the thread I just pointed you at and enough of it seemed architecturally the same as what I do here with my ES that I think you'll be able to get your rig up and running following the instructions from over there.
As for using an external instrument track, yes, I think you would. If you actually need to get into the environment, it'll be all of 5 minutes there to create a multi-instrument object for your ES rack. Essentially you just "click it into" the environment, then enable all the MIDI channels for it. That's pretty much it (and described in the thread).
Compared to Cubase, it's not so much "hard" as that Cubase, which is a product produced by a company owned by Yamaha, and is tightly couple with the studio connections initiative (Yamaha innovating with Yamaha - that's easy). The logic integration with the Motif just isn't as tight, but Logic itself will most likely wean you away from the Motif a bit. I mean I love my ES, but I'm no longer surprised if I have a project that ultimately didn't use any sound from the ES itself, it's just easier to grab a different softsynth and benefit from the tight integration between AU softsynths and Logic. Theoretically, Yamaha could have written an AU-compatible "wrapper" around the whole Motif line that would have given all of us Studio Connections-equivalent functionality, but they were doing their own thing, and Apple theirs... Unfortunate...
Post back if you're still having problems, but the essence of your question is more specific to the ES Rack, and the Motif users over at motifator.com are good support and good folk too.
    Michael
