Maintain RAW file as per original.

Ref: CS3 / XP PRO:
I open an image in ACR, make adjustments to it.
I open the image in Photoshop, and make a Duplicate.
I close the first image (Not the Copy), and select "NO" for "Do you wish to save changes"
I go back into bridge, and view the RAW file, and though I selected "NO" for changes, the image retains the changes/adjustments made in ACR.
Is there any simple way to return the RAW file to the original state as it appeared prior to ACR adjustments???
The only way I've found to do it is to keep separate files of the original RAW files on another drive.

>Is there any simple way to return the RAW file to the original state as it appeared prior to ACR adjustments???
As mentioned in other posts, when you open a raw file from acr into photoshop the acr-applied adjustments are retained, associated with the raw file. What you need to do is not Open the file from acr into photohsop; rather, Save it from acr then Cancel out of acr:
Open raw file in acr, make desired adjustments, then click on Save Image. This will bring up a save dialog where you can select the file image format and where to save it. After saving the new image file, click Cancel to exit acr without retaining the changes you just made in acr. Then you can open your saved image file (tiff, psd, jpeg) into photoshop.

  • How to delete raw files while keeping original jpgs/later versions?

I'm using Aperture currently, which apparently can't do this -- if Lightroom can, I'm switching.
What I'd like to do is shoot everything in raw + jpg (using Nikon D200), and then keep the raw files only for the important shots.
I really like having the option of raw processing, but the storage demands are obviously very big. If I could just make a selection of multiple photos, and have a command to delete all the raw files from the selected photos, while keeping the original jpgs, that would be great.
Also, it would be great to be able to manipulate a raw file, and then when I'm satisfied with the image, to generate a full-size jpg & ditch the raw file. The jpg then becomes the master for that image.
Basically, I want the raw file safety net for everyday images, without gobbling up gigabytes of disk space every time...
    Can Lightroom do this?

I am unable to hide RAW files in Bridge.
And I can't delete or rename them in Windows Explorer.
    I'm using XP SP3.
Rejected RAW files appear in Bridge as unlabeled files. They are not hidden. "Show Hidden Files" is not checked; "Show Reject Files" is NOT checked. I've got the Label settings on. I created a subfolder and moved a batch of rejected RAWs there. They still show up, but at least they're labeled "Rejected."
Delete: I have a big sort to do, and I'd even be willing to delete these RAW files to avoid seeing them in Bridge.
I tried deleting them in Bridge using several methods, but I get an error message that tells me I don't have the "sufficient permissions." This happens even when I try to delete just one file.
I also tried deleting them in Windows Explorer. There, I got an error message that theyare in use by another program. I cannot re-name them in Explorer either. I got the same error message even when I shut down my computer and opened ONLY Windows Explorer. In Properties > File Attributes, neither Hidden or Read-Only are checked.
This is a big and important project, and I'm TOTALLY STUMPED!

  • How to edit RAW file as unedited original in PSE8?

How do I edit a RAW file in it's original form after having already edited it?  I can only see it in the previously edited format.  I can't seem to figure out how to get back to the original, unedited view.
I know it is probably simple, but cannot find it.
    Thanks!

  • How do I reset a RAW file to it's original settings?

    Hello
[I use PS CS3 (Although I have access to CS4) and an intel imac]
I want to keep my RAW files unadulterated, in the state that they were shot, so that I can return to them at a later date to 'play' again, with a fresh point of view. However, when I open Bridge, i see they have the icon on them indicating that changes have been applied to them. I don't need the RAW files with the changes, I already have the jpgs and tiffs that i created from them.
Yes, i searched the forms here and found how to prevent the settings from being applied to RAW files that I open from now on: tested the method and it's good.
I also followed the remove xmp file advice and that worked, too.
However, I still have a couple of RAW files that didn't have xmp files associated with them, and I can't get rid of the little icon, hence i assume the changes are still there.
How can I recover the original unchanged RAW files for these?
What I've tried: in Camera Raw i 'reset camera raw defaults', because I thought that would return all the sliders to the unchanged state, but as you can see, it still indicates changes. The camera is panasonic, and came with Silky Pix to work with the RAW files: last night I tried SP on the same photo (created the spd file). Would the spd file have anything to do with my problem?
By the way, SP opened the raw file while it still had the CR changes applied and I think SP might have been working from the already-adjusted raw file. (Which is another reason why i want to keep the RAW files clean and original)
Hope someone can help me (And that this isn't too confusing)

    Hi
I just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 6 and installed Camera Raw. I’m taking RAW photos since some time so I hope this will improve my workflow.
Like Elizbonn, I’m a bit lost about some features of Camera Raw and the files it manages.
I understand what a RAW file is and I think I understand what a DNG file is.
Is there a reference document more specific than the Help files?
I found out by myself a couple of stuff but I’m not quite sure I guessed correctlt and I have some questions here. Maybe they are answered some place.
    1. The RAW file is never modified (by any soft that I know of actually). Right?
    2. DNG is a universal format that stores the same data as the original RAW with no loss. Right?
2.1. Yet creating a DNG file is optional. I have a Canon camera so my RAWs are in CR2 format which is widely supported and since I’m just an amateur photographer I don’t need to go for DNGs. Right? Or I could just trash the CR2 files without losing anything. Right?
    3. The xmp file stores parameters about both the RAW file and the DNG (if I create one). It has to remain in the same folder at all times. I tried renaming: it works if it's applied to all the files. Some under-the-hood details are still unclear with Camera Raw:
3.1. When a RAW image is opened, if I do no modification and I click the Open Image button, an xmp file is created. What for? If I trash it nothing happens.
3.2. When a RAW image is opened, if I do some modifications and I click the Open Image button the modifications I did are stored in the xmp file. In the future, whenever I open that RAW file, Camera Raw will display the modified image provided the xmp is in the same folder. Right? The only way to revert to the original image is by moving the xmp file somewhere else. Right?
3.3. The Undo function with Camera Raw goes only one step backward. Right?
    4. Camera Raw’s functions are in part similar to Photoshop Element’s and some are specific. Do they work the same?
Thanks in advance for your input.

  • Is it impossible to modify a RAW file in Photoshop?

I needed to modify an image using the clone tool in Photoshop and opened the RAW file from Lightroom in Photoshop to make the modification. When I saved the image it saved as 'filename-Edit.tif' next to the RAW file. I added that image to my catalog so I could keep track of it.
What I really wanted to do was to make the modification to the RAW file and save by overwriting the old RAW file.
I think that may not be possible.
Could someone here tell me why the RAW file could not be modified in Photoshop. Is this to ensure that the RAW file will remain original, with modifications only appearing in the sidecar .xmp file? This is fine and good, but just wanted to make sure that that is the only way it can be done and that modifications in Photoshop will yield a new separate file upon saving.
    Thanks,
    Ken

What I really wanted to do was to make the modification to the RAW file and save by overwriting the old RAW file.
That is indeed as you found out impossible.
Could someone here tell me why the RAW file could not be modified in Photoshop.
The reason is that the RAW file is a mosaiced file with direct sensor data at each pixel. Usually two out of four pixels have a green filter, while 1 out of four have a red and another 1 out of 4 a green pixel. The data is usually stored with 12 or 14 bit precision for each pixel. All this is inherently incompatible with the pixel model of a program like Photoshop. To edit such files in Photoshop, you need to demosaic them to full three-channel RGB data, render them into a certain color space, gamma correct them, sharpen them, etc. This is what ACR and Lightroom do for you. So you cannot edit the underlying data using Photoshop. If you edit in Photoshop, you will always have to create a new file.
P.S. you might have noticed that the edit in Photoshop creates a far larger tif file than the original RAW. This is because of the Bayer mosaic. Say you have a 12 MP camera. When shooting 12-bit RAW, this will result in a 18 MB uncompressed dataset (12MP*12bits/(8bits/byte)= 18MB). Saved losslesly compressed and including a jpeg preview that gets you approximately to 12 MB for a typical RAW file from that camera. When you render this into a 16 bit tiff, you suddenly need a full 3x16=48 bits per pixel! So this results in a 72 MB uncompressed tiff file, which will probably compress to about 50% of that. More than 3 times larger than the original RAW!

  • Moving RAW files from one drive to another without loosing all your work in Lightroom

I am posting this for two reasons, the first is I have been trying to figure out how to get my raw files off my hard drive & onto my external hardrive for ages, as my laptop is filling up & slowing down with the huge files my new camera captures. I have been researching this & have found it hard to find a clear answer to my particular problem using Windows 7 not a Mac.
After loosing some files in Lightroom when I moved them within Explorer instead of Lightroom, & being unable to figure out how to add a new drive in the Library module in Lightroom to move them to, I wanted to make sure I got it right when I moved the lot of them. I finally figured out a way, it might be round about, but it got it done without any trouble.
This is how I moved my files:
In Windows Explorer I moved one folder which Lightroom uses, from my laptop to the drive I want to store them all on from now on.
Then in Lightroom, under 'Library' (along the top, eg 'File' 'Edit' 'Library' etc) I selected 'Find missing photos' & led Lightroom to the new location. Now my external hd as well as my laptop hd was listed under 'Folders'  (on the Left hand side of the screen along with 'Navigator' 'Catalog' 'Folders' etc) in the Library module.
After that it was simple. Just a matter of dragging & dropping from my C drive (laptop)to my G drive (external hd) while in Lightroom; Library module. This way Lightroom keeps track of where the files are stored & nothing is lost.
From now on I will be importing raw files from my camera to my external hd & working on them all from there.
If anyone has a simpler way please share it. I am very new at this & don't profess to be an expert. So any advice would be greatly appreciated
The second reason for this post is that I'd like to know how to make sure that the adjustments made in Lightroom are stored on the external hd as well, incase anything happens to the laptop?
Is exporting the catalogue what I need to do?
Or can I back up the Lightroom adjustments to my external hd somehow?
OR when I moved the raw files did this information move with them?
I understand that my raw files are the original unaltered files & that the changes made in Lightroom are recorded seperately & applied in Lightroom itself..... Well, that's what I think I know about how it all works after a few months of using it, so please forgive me if I'm missing something & I'll be very happy to be enlightened if you'd be so kind
Happy New Year to you all!

All the adjustments are stored in the catalog (not in the file). So you want to back it up, and the external is a good place. In the catalog settings (Edit > Catalog Settings > General) there is an option to set a regular backup schedule, and you'll be asked where you want to put it.
The backup is just a regular copy of the catalog, and you can simply launch Lightroom from that, by double-clicking it.
The image files themselves should also be backed up of course, but that's outside Lightroom.

  • Raw file reset?  not working

can't reset a raw file back to original, even when I dump the xmp file-I've tried everything I can think of

I hope this question doesn't upset you. But are you sure you are clicking Reset on the raw file, and not on a TIF or PSD file that has been edited in another program? I know, very basic. But the reset button works for me. And when we start discussing problems such as this we have to get into specifics. A general "it doesn't work" with no specific details about what has been done doesn't prove to be very productive.

  • Lines - artefacts? - on raw files from d200

hello. this is the first time I've tried a forum..
my problem is old raw files that were originally imported into iphoto from a D200 (jpegs shot at same time are fine) - they appear ok but with thin coloured horizontal lines (artifacts?) - in iphoto, and however I export them (eg as a TIFF, as original into Aperture, onto an external hard drive). I have solved this import problem with an update now, so its okay for new pictures - BUT - are all the old files damaged or recoverable somehow?? I would be very grateful for any help..

hello & thank you. I just tried opening them in Capture NX and the lines are still there. I'm presuming this means the files were damaged somehow by being imported through iphoto that first time - as it no longer happens now I have the update (all my backup raw files were - I think - dragged out of iphoto and onto disk/hard drive, & show same thing). Does anyone know if there is any way to restore them?

  • Can Lightroom 5 corrupt RAW files?

I just started using Lightroom 5 and the following thing has happened to me twice within an hour.
Normally, I first rank the photos and then tweak a bit the 4* photos before I export them.
So I go through every file at least once, if not twice. As I was about to assign a keyword to the attached image, it suddenly turned into what you can see - it's been a totally normal photo. The weirdest thing is that the original RAW image is damaged, too. I did a bit of digging around and in theory, Lightroom has Read Only access to the original RAW files - yet the original file is corrupted, too.
Any guess what the cause might be? I'm using an older Canon 1Ds Mk III.

Lightroom doesn’t touch the files, it simply works with metadata. The problem is most likely to be hardware related. It’s really a process of elimination e.g. testing memory card, card reader, hard drive, external hard drive/network, memory (RAM) which sometimes fails on older computers.

  • Massive RAW files on editing originals in Iphoto

On some occasions, but not all, when I process a RAW file and go to upload the result to Flickr, I discover it is some 4 or 5 times the size of the original RAW file, but on other occasions it isn't.  This seems to repeat in certain files, if I try to redo them.  Is this siomething I can work round, or isit something I am stuck with?  Thanx in advance if anyone can help!
    D

editing can not "change" the size of a RAW file since the original RAW file is kept and you can not edit RAW - when you edit RAW you create a new file iin either a JPEG or TIFF depending on how you have changed the default iPhoto preference settings - exactly how are you editing the RAW? In the iPhoto preferences do you have the preference to save RAW edits as TIFFs checked (betting you do) - if so uncheck it

  • LR destroys original raw files

I made this as direct as I could .  Here are the facts:
                            1.  My cameras are Leica M8/9 s and they produce DNG s as their raw format.  So I am starting with a camera generated DNG.
                            2. I utilized the Mac OS folder structure for managing my originals .  Import to the Mac folder structure independent of LR.
                            3. I import into LR using the reference the files without moving.
                            4. It is clear that any processing done in LR including the use of camera profiles, develop settings and meta data are written back into the original DNG.    With other raw formats the information is written into a .xmp.
                            5. It is unclear if the raw file itself has been altered as some individuals are reporting that the raw file itself has been processed using the profile available.   Other programs recognize the dng as a processed version and will not apply a camera profile.
This has significant implications for workflow and backup processes and it certainly doesn t fit with the non destructive benefit?? of LR.

For your answer to be relevant ..it has to consider the specific situation the OP is trying to work through.   Getting answers like ......LR is handling it correctly the problem is the 3rd party software , or maybe switch to a D3x ,or look at the DNG with a fully DNG compliant viewer....show a fundamental lack of understanding of the problem.
Here's an equivalent analogy: you are using MS Office 2007 to write
out documents, and it is saving them in it's DOCX format (the latest
revision to the Word DOC format). Then you are trying to open them
with a word processor that only understands the older DOC format, and
    not the newer DOCX.
The complaints were the same then, too.
The problem is that the 3rd party software is not as update as the
other. The problem is in mixing software software packages with
differing levels of support for what you want to do. Yes, it sucks
when you get bitten by such mis-understandings. We do sympathize.Yes,
some of us have been bitten by the same sorts of incompatibilities
(with other software packages). But you're going about this completely
    in the wrong way.
Are you also being this assertive on C1 forums, demanding that they
upgrade the DNG support to maintain compatability with the latest
revision of DNG? Or including warnings when they import a new revision
of DNG, that C1 doesn't support it?
Because it certainly seems that you want Adobe to change the way their
products work, so that the files are as compatible with other programs
as possible, If that's what you want, then the changes should come
from both directions, don't you think? Isn't your point that a DNG
file should be readable by all software the same? If so, then
shouldn't the other manufacturers be pressured to move forward, just
as much as Adobe should be pressured to maintain backward
    compatibility?
Asking me to prove that the situation exists are insulting.
Asking for documented examples is not insulting; it's standard
practice when tracking down a bug. I've worked with enough software
developers over the years (I'm a network administrator) to know that.
You're so absolutely convinced that you are right, and Adobe wrong,
that you are not willing to do that. Perhaps if you did, then Adobe
could identify specifically what areas cause the problem, and perhaps
issue a patch, just for those areas. But you're not willing to help,
    in that way.

  • When opening an original shot raw file it opens in CS6 almost 5 times as large

Why is the file so large when I have not made any changes?
1..is there any thing that can reset to keep the original file size?
    I am using CS6 and Lightroom 4

Why does it bother you that file sizes change depending on the format?

I am looking at the file size in the left corner. If I do a save. My raw file as shot with a d800 is 34 MB now saving it as a tif and using LZW it is 176 MB. The files are all 16 bit and I am shooting in 12 bit from the camera .
A raw file with 12 bits per pixel is certainly going to be smaller than one with 48 bits per pixel (which is what a 16 bit RGB file really is).  As has been mentioned various formats do various kinds of compression which may be more or less effective depending on image content..
Bottom line is this:  You have a D800.  It makes large images that can be incredibly detailed.  You'll have to learn to live with the fact that these images are going to take a LOT more computer resources than the cameras of the past.

    Question?
I have accidentally deleted a large number of develped images in Lightroom before I did a backup. I reimported the original raw files back into Lightroom hoping the develop settings would be re-established but no luck. Notice system mau have done an auto-backup as have an lrcat-journal file. Can I use this to restore my develop settings. I also have jpgs generated from all the deleted images.

    Hello,
if you have a backup of your catalog you can do the following:
    1. Backup your catalog first
    2. Restore your backup catalog to some location
    3. Open your current catalog and select "files->import from another catalog".
    4. Select your backup catalog and your lost images. LR ask you if you want to overwrite the current settings or save them as a virtual copy.
As an alternativ you can open your backup catalog, select the "lost" images and save the development settings as xmp sidecar fiels (using ctrl-s). Then open your current catalog, seletct the images and use "Metadata->Read Metadata from files".

Looking for answers on XMP files - where should they be stored as sidecar files?  With the original raw file or in a separate folder?
Relatively new user of Adobe LR5 and PS CC, about a year old.
If they should be stored somewhere beside the folder that contains the originals, where and how to change the settings?
If I choose to write metadata to the original files, is that sidecar files or does the XMP file show separately?
To be honest, I usually find a video and I cannot figure this out.  I have never received an answer on any of my questions by the way.

  • Random Original RAW files unavailable in managed library. :(

I've had an Aperture library that has traveled with me through all of the various updates (up to and include 3.4.3), but now in random projects (and most but not all photos) the original RAW file isn't available, only the preview.  The problem, is that now I can't edit or even export the photos.  I recently went through a whole "corrupt library" restore from a vault that I keep up to date, but now I'm going to try to rebuild the database.
Very disconcerning.  Hopefully there is a simple cause and remedy someone can help me with.

Thanks for the reply!  I went through all three first aid steps over the last two days (in increasing order), so first was permissions, then repair, then rebuild the database.  I haven't updated the vault since I noticed this issue a few days ago, but I don't know how long it's been going on.
Also, I opened the library file by showing the package contents, and navigated to a masters file folder that I could compare to the viewer, and if you look at the screenshot below, IMG_4870.CR2 is the first RAW file in the folder.  It then skips two files (IMG_4871 and IMG_4872) which both show the yellow "!" icon in the viewer, then the next raw file is IMG_4873.  What this tells me, is that, in fact, the RAW files really DON't exist in the folder of that import.
Is there a way to browse the contents of the vault without restoring?  I'm also thinking I might restore the library from the vault to a different drive to see if the RAW files are there.  Lastly, I'm going to check my Backblaze backup to see if the RAW files are there.
For future reference, I'm going to set up a mirrored RAID drive set and do a live backup of the masters during the import.
I REALLY hope I can recover the originals from this...
