Maintaing Focus Video on Elph 130IS

I primarily use my Canon PowerShot Elph 130IS for taking videos of the products I design and sell on the Internet.  The subject of my videos are R/C Gliders known as "Slope Planes."  These planes are usually flown at the top of a hill where the glider can ride uplifting winds.
My problem is that I have yet to have found the right combination of settings that allow the glider to stay in focus.  I would say that around 30% of my videos are out of focus.  I'm able to edit out the out of focus parts to make decent video, but it is still very frustrating because some of my best aerobatic moves are lost to editing because they are out of focus.
I have tried just about everything to include "Program Mode" and set the focus to Infinity...not much if any difference.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with tracking in that it seems to go out of focus when the glider changes distances from the camera.
I would love to know if it is possible to set up the camera in such a way that it maintains focus no matter how close the glider is or how far away it is.
Here is a finished example of what I use my camera for in my business...the camera is basically strapped to my forehead.

Hi Paige after looking at the available focus settings/options for that model camera for movies I think I see your dilemma. Unfortunately while taking movies you do not have the option of using say Servo AF which continuosly maintains the focus. Also it looks to me that setting th focus to infinity is only available when shooting still images not movies on your model camera so it has no effect. The best options for you with that camera for movies from what I see is to be sure your AF Frame Size is set to Normal and not Small and Continuos Focus is set to on. Also try with Image Stabilization set to Continous as well as Off for your application.
I assume you want to focus at varying distances, if you want to focus or focusing at a certain distance will work better for you then you can try to use the AF focus lock option.
Hang in there though there are others who will also chime in with advice for you too.
By the way what your doing sounds pretty cool !!

  • Encoder produces soft focus video

    CS4 on a Vista PC.  I have AME 4.0 and repeated attempts to update to 4.1 does not work.  It goes through all the steps of update, but then doesn't do it.  I have 4.0.0.3   Anyway, I have no idea that's the root of my problem.  I'm bringing in files through the Matrox SD preset through I'm shooting on a Panasonic tapeless format that produces .mts files.  I hope you can see from the attached frame grabs of the same frame that I'm starting with a focused image.  The vide is being encoded in Microsoft .avi in SD NTSC.  Has anyone had to deal with this?  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I can't give video like this to my clients.  Thank you for any assistance.

    the video and sound quality of the videos i take with the N97 is great. however the videos are EXTREMELY out of focus (and it gets even worse if i zoom in). is there a way i can set it to auto focus like the still photos? if not... is there a button i can press for it to focus?
    cuz seriously...its bad

    Yep, no focus. Here is quote from AAS:
    "There will be much more on the camera side of things in a future review part. Video capture is at the same spec as on the 5800 - with no initial focussing yet again and with focus set at infinity"

  • Maintaing focus on Nav elements

    Does anyone know how to hold focus on a separate navigation
    menu (i am using an unorderd list with hrefs, using CSS pseudo
    styling with an additional Javascript to activate the focus on
    which menu item page is displayed), while interacting with the Spry
    collapsible panels? Anytime, I open or close a collpasible panel,
    my navigation menu (separate from the spry panels) looses it's
    pseudo 'active' state and becomes unhighlighted.

    By Applying a page ID to a non-displayed DIV(wrapping the
    entire page content before and after body) and an ID on each
    navigation element, I can style the nav elements accordingly, to
    appear as if selected, while still interacting with other elements,
    including Spry elements, on the page.

    no, but i can try
    The curtain has been pulled back on iPhone 4, and the list of new features is massive: There's multitasking (finally!), a refreshed interface, and literally hundreds of other changes, all coming this summer. Here's the rundown.
    The new OS will ship in June (Fall for iPad, and a developer preview is available today, so we can expect to have plenty of apps updated and ready for launch.
    New Features: Multitasking, App Folders and More
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • Multitasking: It's here, finally. It's handled with a simple task switcher: double click your home button, and you get a list of running apps. Select, switch, done. Multitasking is limited to audio streaming, VoIP and GPS apps, as well as a few other allowances: they can finish specific, important tasks in the background, for example. As far as non-music/nav/VoIP apps, those can be suspended in the background, but not left running. (See below.) Full details here.
    • Fast app switching: With iPhone 4's multitasking, most apps aren't actually running in the background—just certain functions of the app, like an audio stream or a GPS lock. But! All apps can now be frozen, in full, so that when you reopen them, they're restored to exactly the state they were in when they were closed.
    • Local notifications: Notifications can be sent between apps on the phone, not just from remote servers. In other words, if something important happens in an app you've opened and moved away from, a notification will pop up in whatever app you're using at the time, effectively saying "switch back to me!" It's a fairly clever way to keep track of multiple apps without the need for a start bar or dock-type interface. From Apple's dev guidelines:
    The advantage of local notifications is that they are independent of your application. Once a notification is scheduled, the system manages the delivery of it. Your application does not even have to be running when the notification is delivered.
    Apple's official line:
    iPhone OS 4's new multitasking offers users a new way to quickly move between apps, and provides developers seven new multitasking services to easily add multitasking features to their apps. These services include background audio, so apps like Pandora can play music in the background, and VoIP, so VoIP apps can receive a VoIP call even when the iPhone is asleep or the user is running other apps. iPhone OS 4 provides multitasking to third party apps while preserving battery life and foreground app performance, which has until now proved elusive on mobile devices.
    And some more technical details, again from Apple's developer guidelines:
    An application can request a finite amount of time to complete some important task. An application can declare itself as supporting specific services that require regular background execution time. An application can use local notifications to generate user alerts at designated times, whether or not the application is running.
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • App folders: Now you can sort your apps into folders! That's homescreen clutter solved, just like that. Apple's description:
    Folders help users better organize and quickly access their apps. Simply drag one app icon onto another, and a new folder is automatically created. The folder is automatically given a name based on the App Store category of that app, such as "Games," which the user can easily rename. Using folders, users can now organize and access over 2,000 apps on their iPhone.
    2160, to be exact.
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • A new Mail app: Unified inboxes, multiple Exchange accounts, fast inbox switching, threaded messages: These new features are actually a huge deal, since the iPhone's mail client has barely changed since 2007, and Apple doesn't allow alternative mail apps. Apple's pitch:
    iPhone OS 4 delivers the best mail experience on a mobile phone with its new Unified Inbox, allowing users to see messages from all their email accounts displayed together in a single inbox. With just a few taps, users can quickly switch between inboxes to see messages from any single account.
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features• iBooks: Oh hey, that iBooks ebook reader app and accompanying ebook store we first met on the iPad has ambled on down to the iPhone. Nice, since you can now take your books with you wherever you go, as oppose to wherever you go with your iPad.
    • Custom backgrounds: Jailbreakers have them. ****, the iPad has them. Now you can choose a persistent background for your iPhone—and not just for the lockscreen.
    • Game Center: Apple's going to roll out a centralized gaming service—a multiplayer network like PSN or Xbox Live—to help connect games to one another, by the end on the year. There are 3rd-party services that already do this, like OpenFeint. They will probably die. Full details here.
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • iAd advertising: It looks like Apple's finally making use of Quattro, that mobile ad company it gobbled up a few months ago, by rolling out its own advertising platform, a turnkey ad plugin for app developers called iAd. The theory here is that instead of relying on links to external websites, which pull users out of apps whenever they tap on an ad, developers can use Apple's new tools to keep people in the app while still showing them advertising—sort of like popover browser windows. You can watch videos, play games, and even buy apps from within these ads. This is in the iPhone OS 4 developer tools, but it's not explicitly a part of OS 4, so you won't see apps with iAds until later this year. Full details here.
    • 5x digital zoom: Could this hint at a higher quality camera in the next hardware? 3.2 megapixels seems a bit low for 5x digital zoom.
    • Bluetooth keyboards: Another carryover from the iPad, Bluetooth keyboard support will finally come to iPhone 4.
    • A bevy of other new developer features, including 1500 new APIs to play with: See here for more details.
    The Hidden Features
    Now that we've had a few days to use the OS, we've compiled a huge list of features not covered in the keynote.
    Which Devices Get It, and When?
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    When the software ships in the summer, iPhone 3GSes and iPod Touch 3rd-gens devices will get all of the new features. The iPhone 3G and Touch 2G will get "many things," which doesn't include multitasking. I repeat: the iPhone 3G won't get multitasking, ever. iPhone 2Gs will be left on a hillside somewhere to die of exposure, or something.
    Apple didn't drop any clues about the next iPhone's hardware, but it's a fair bet that we'll see some changes come June.
    What About the iPad?
    iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    The iPad won't get the 4.0 upgrade until Fall of this year, a few months after the iPhone does. So, you'll be able to multitask on your dinky little iPhone before you'll be even be able to listen to Pandora and check your email at the same time on your giant iPad.

  • Mac X,Y...Z?

    Lately I have been getting into CGI animation, or 3D. I would like to know...are there any 3D modelers for my Macintosh Performa 637CD (running OS 7.5.5)? I bought a FOCUS video converter that came with a Demo CD, which contained a whole lot of cool programs. There were 3 3D programs, which were called something Stata3D...but they were only demos and I could not even run them because they needed an FPU, which I guess the Performa does not have. What should I do, and where can I get some good 3D modeling programs that do not need an FPU? Please help!

    I'm not very familiar with any 68k 3D Moddeling programs, but there is a program called SoftwareFPU http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/4097 that allows programs that require a FPU run on 68k Macs without one.

  • Exporting an FCE project for HD Blu-ray

    I am new to FCE (and HD video). I have a video camera that is set up to export video in AVCHD h.264. The resolution is 1080x60i (1920x1080 pix at 29.97fps). The video bit rate of the recording appears, according to Canon's literature, to be 17MB/s (although this bit rate seems too slow given the amount of data that has to be transferred). The audio is Dolby stereo at 48KHz sampling rate, 192Kb/s bit rate.
    I have transferred the video into FCE and completed my project. I would now like to create a Blu-ray disc of equal quality to the raw video data. That's my goal anyway.
    I understand that FCE cannot export AVCHD h.264. However, it does seem to be able to export using the MPEG-4, h.264 codec. Aren't these one and the same? I have tried to export via;
    Export->Using Quick Time Conversion...;
    Format=MPEG-4; Options;
    File Format=MP4,
    Video;
    Video Format = H.264,
    Data Rate = 17000 (kb/s),
    Image Size = 1920 x 1080 HD,
    Optimized for = CD/DVD-ROM,
    Frame Rate = 29.97,
    Key Frame = Automatic;
    Video Options,
    Restrict Profile to = Main,
    Encoding Mode = Best Quality
    Audio;
    Audio Format = AAC-LC(Music),
    Data Rate = 192 kb/s
    Channels = Stereo
    Output Sample Rate = 48 kHz,
    Encoding Quality = Best.
    I suspected the conversion from AIC would take a while. In fact, about 25 hours in, it created a file error. So I restarted the export with the bit rate reduced from 17 Mb/s down to 7 Mb/s. It finished the conversion in a little over 24 hours. Does anyone know why it crashed at 17Mb/s? Just as a sanity check, are these export times about right?
    I then burned a Blu-ray disc on a LaCie d2 Blu-ray burner via Toast Titanium 10. The MPEG-4 file generated by FCE was about 800 MB, while the Blu-ray compatible file created by Toast was about 9.5GB (more believable). Also, looking at the file statistics in Finder, it says the Total bit rate is 1,949 . Any ideas as to why the size difference (compression differences)? Did FCE really output the MPEG-4 file at 1,949 Kb/s or KB/s? Bottom line, given the above, will I achieve my goal of maintaing original video quality given the above work path?
    Thanks.

    Why don't you just export from FCE to QuickTime Movie (not QuickTime Conversion). That would give you a QT Movie in Apple Intermediate Codec at the full resolution of your video. You would import that file into Toast for burning. Toast will take care of the encoding burning to blu-ray.

  • Would HDV solve this problem

    I am a consumer researching HD Camcorders. Own FCS. I've read many of the posts about camera selection and if price were no concern... Anyway, I record my son's sports and sometimes make DVD's for the other kids, who seem to enjoy them. Don't charge for these, as I'm still learning to film and edit.
    The problem I want to solve is this. When filming football from the sidelines, I keep try to film between the tackles, maybe a little wider. I find I get the best video by keeping a wider view of the field. When I try to zoom in during editing, like to show the tackle, SD gets bad quickly. Will HDV improve this? Seems like I read somewhere HDV isn't great for sports or fast movement.
    I'm concerned about all the additional expenses for the better HD formats. P2 cards and storage could add up really fast for a consumer.
    Thanks

    That's my real question...
    1. If I shoot in HD and edit for output to SD DVD, would I get some scaling
    capability? Even scaling only 25% would improve the slow motion sequences?
    Short answer, yes, BUT...
    1) to do this you will have to edit in an SD sequence that means rendering every second of your HD video as you edit and if you through HDV into the mix you are talking about incrediby loooooong render times.
    2) I have never shot HDV (I have shot HD) but from what I have read it is not your choice for sports video.
    3) You had better be real good with the camera, it is very difficult to get good focus with HD. When I shoot I take along a laser rangefinder and set my focus that way because the viewfinders on the HD or HDV cameras are simply not up to the task. And if you scale out of focus video it only gets worse.
    4) HD or HDV is neither cheap nor easy, I don't care what Sony, Canon or Panasonic says. They just want me to buy a camera and they will say whatever it takes to distance me from my hard earned cash.
    Take what you would spend on one new HD or HDV camera and buy two smaller SD cameras, set one on a tripod on a wide shot and use the other to capture close-ups.
    just my .02 cents,
    K

  • Canon image gateway update camera window DC error

    Hi!
    I have gotten all the way through to the Canon Utilities Camera Window DC, and when I click the "edit web services" button I get a pop up window that says "Update the application. To set your camer, update CameraWindow DC".
    I cannot get past this screen.
    My camera is a Canon Powershot Elph 130IS
    My computer is a Mac OSX 10.6.8
    Please help! The reason I bought this camera was the wifi ability and to be able to upload to the internet to websites like facebook, etc
    Thanks!
    Lisa

    Hi lisalomano!
    Thanks for posting.
    To fix the web services function, you would need to update to the newer version of CameraWindow DC.  This can be downloaded from our website.  However,  The newer versions of CameraWindow DC will not work with the version of the Mac OS you have.  You need at least OS 10.7 or above to install the update.

    I believe this is a relative easy fix but cannot for the life of my locate it.
    I'm using zoombrowser 6.5 and just swtiched to a newer version of the Powershot Elph 130is. When the photos are loading onto my PC using zoombrowser that are auto rotated- however there is a blue rotation arrrow on the left side at the top.
    I had somehow in the past eliminated that- the photos are not saving rotated- rather they are reverting to the orientation they were taken from.
