Maintaing symbols between different computers

I am currently using CS3, on Windows XP-SP3.
I work with ESRI ArcGIS mapping software and export my documents to .ai format to work on the graphic design in illustrator. The symbols work fine between the two programs since I have the symbol/font set installed. They also work when I save as a pdf.
I can, while exporting from ArcGIS to .ai, vectorize the symbols. But this removes the ability to resize the symbols proportionally, while keeping their proper location (I am making maps).
The problem I have is transferring an .ai file from my computer to another computer, which doesn't have the same symbols.
-Is there a way to package the symbol/font to my .ai file?
-Should I just send them the symbol/font to install?
I would like to stay with vector format.
Thanks!!

So you want to work the drawing in AI, correct? And you have no difficulty getting it from your other program into AI with the "symbols" intact, because the "symbols" are glyphs in a clipart font?
> I can, while exporting from ArcGIS to .ai, vectorize the symbols.
Assuming PS Type 1, TrueType, or OpenType fonts, the glyphs are already vector. So you don't "vectorize" fonts. I assume you are talking aobut converting text to paths.
> But this removes the ability to resize the symbols proportionally, while keeping their proper location (I am making maps).
Again, assuming you are working in AI, you
can resize the symbols proportionally while keeping their current locations. That's what the Transform Each command is for.

  • I just received an OEM copy of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 with my Canon Pixma Pro 100 Printer.  What exactly is OEM.  Is it a full version?  Can I transfer files between different computers?

    @

OEM means "Original Equipment Manufacturer", or in your case, Canon (not Adobe) is providing the software. It is identical to what you can buy from Adobe. It is the full version (that's the only version of Lightroom that exists)
Transfer files between different computers ... this is not a function of Lightroom. Lightroom neither helps nor prevents you from transferring files from one computer to another.

  • Codec missing and moving projects between different computers

    Hi,
Im a real rookie when it comes to premiere... and i have 2 problems.
First off i just want to know the best way to move a project between two computers... Usually when i move the folder and try open it all the links to the different movie files dont work, so i have to go through and select each one manually. There must be a way to get around this...
Second off i have a problem with importing my mac mov (i used iMovie to move the files from the video camera, which is a Sony HDR-HC3) files into premiere on the pc, it claims the codecs are missing. I have installed quicktime on the pc and i can play the movies fine, but they wont import into premiere because of the missing codec. Why?

  • Sync between different computers

    Question:
I sync my devices (iphone, ipod, ipad2) on my MacPro at home, no problem. When traveling I may need to sync one on them with my laptop. Maybe a new app, new music, pdf files, etc.
What I'd like to know is the best to keep the two iTunes libraries in sync so I don't risk losing anything by syncing between two different computers.
    Any help appreciated.
    John

you can use home sharing to keep the two libraries in sync. however, the future probably looks like this.
by design, iPhone and iPad can sync with only one library at a time.
however, you could consider Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod.

  • Reuse symbols between different files

    Dear friends,
I'm designing a big web site with too many different pages
(about 150). It's no possible to add all pages in only one
Fireworks file, because de performance is too slow when I open or
save the file. So, I can't use de document library to reuse some
    elements (headers, footers, etc.).
I would try to use de Common Library, but it's not the
solution: if I do any change on a symbol, the instances in the
    different files doesn't changes.
There are any way to do something like I want to do (common
    elements between some files).
    Regards.

Thanks, mebadger. It's not exactly what I mean, but your
message give me a clue. There are a way to do exactly what I want
For example, suppose that we need to have our navigation menu
separated. Make a different file with the menu, select all items
and convert to symbol in de Document Library (it's no necessary
save to Common Library). Select the symbol in the panel, and then
from the options menu select 'Export...'. This option save a PNG
    file with the menu symbol.
Now, create a new document, select 'Import...' from the
Document Library options menu and choose the file that you create
from Export option. The symbol appears in the panel and you can put
    in the layout.
Now, open the PNG file with the menu, change anything in the
    symbol and save the file.
Go back to the other file, and on Document Library options
menu select Update and... here you are!!! :)
I hope you can undestand the explanation. Sorry for my
    english

  • Will the new iCloud feature sync Aperture libraries between different computers?

If there was a Cloud section in the forums i would post this there but there isn't so here it is. Syncing my Aperture libraries between my laptop and imac is a big problem for me right now. Does anyone know if the new Cloud air synching feature coming this fall will sync photos between aperture libraries on multiple computers?

There is now an iCloud community iCloud
But I believe the answer to this question is no, iCloud is not meant to do this type of syncing.

  • Can you share collections remotely between different computers, editors and Lightroom licenses?

I am trying to figure out an efficient way to outsource some post-production using Lightroom. I would like to share image previews that are already organized into collections (with some global adjustments) via FTP. Is there away to share a Lightroom catalogs setting between users and platforms that will retain the Lightroom settings?

I would like to share image previews
Does this mean you don't want to share the actual images, only the previews?
I don't really know any easy way to do this. I know you can use a plugin to extract the previews as JPGs and then transmit those.
Is there away to share a Lightroom catalogs setting between users and platforms that will retain the Lightroom settings?
You could write the metadata to XMP and then transmit the images and sidecar files via FTP, other Lightroom installations will be able to read the develop settings and then render the image properly (assuming you have the same major version of Lightroom on each computer, i.e. Lightroom 5.X can read Lightroom 5.X edits, but Lightroom 3 will not be able to read those edits unless you use an earlier process version)

  • Moving a user back and forth between different computers.

My wife and I both have a MBP. When we are travelling together we like to take only one computer and would like to be able to move one user to the one computer we take, so we can both log in to our own desktop etc.
When coming home we would than migrate the user back to the own computer.
I have tried several methods, for example the Migration Assistant but they do not seem to work and make a mess of it. Any tips how this can be achieved?

    OK, dwb
In our case both computers had the same account names:
    same for me
DWB for me and BeyeB for her.
    OK
By user directory, I mean I copy everything from the BeyeB folder of her computer to the BeyeB folder on my computer.
    OK
BTW, while doing this, I'm logged into her account on my computer. No, I don't lose ownership of file and yes, all her prefs including desktop settings are kept.
Aha, I was doing it from my computer on my account.
so to be clear. connected over FW. you are on your computer in her user file, BeyeB. you get the files from user BeyeB on her computer to sync to your computer her user account BeyeB.
and that works? Files need replacing that might be in use? Do you need to log in and out after you sync to see changes?
Or do you mean the other way. you are on your computer and in user BeyeB and send the files to her computer user BeyeB?
this would make more sense to me. confusing or?

  • Why does my itunes generated "purchased" playlist differ between different computers for the same library?

One computer (my newer one with Lion) doesn't have any music before 7/2008 included as "purchased" but still has all the music in the general library that the other computer has listed in the "purchased" playlist (going all the way back to 2006) automatically generated by itunes. The other computer (the one with the correct purchased playlist) only has snow leopard but apparently can still work with the cloud as it has all the new downloads/purchases that have been completed on the other computer. Is this related to the Itunes plus thing - are all the songs before 7/2008 or whatever the date is not itunes plus and that's why they are not showing up as purchased in one computer? I think I can fix this by creating a special playlist of my own to sync between the two of them, but it would be nice to have both purchased lists be accurate for the synced library. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can transfer iTunes content from an iTunes library on a single computer only.
Since these songs were purchased with the same iTunes account, you can download the song that is not in your iTunes library on the computer you will be syncing your iPhone with. Or you can download the song or songs direct on your iPhone.

  • Document inconsistency between different computers, please help!

    Hello here,
I have written an ebook 136 pages long with my own computer (a Mac Pro) using Pages. Now, I have just sent it to my editor and when she opens it inside her computer (always with Pages, same version and her MacBook Pro), it becomes 140 pages long! Looks like the formatting is changed in same way... we have checked everything: page setup, rulers, etc. all looks correct but in reality it is not!
Any ideas? Why is that happening?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks!
    Sincerely,
    Fab.

Here is a basic rule :
if we want to be sure that a given document is rendered identically on two machines, we must check that these machines are running exactly the same version of the operating system and exactly the same set of fonts.
Changes in the operating system may impact the fonts rendering : characters size, spacing, kerning…
The changes may apply to fonts themselves. Font Azerty.dfont v1.2.3.4 may behave differently than font Azerty.dfont v1.2.3.3

  • How to share a GB file between different computers (using dropbox).

Me and a friend are trying to share Garageband '09 files using a shared folder with dropbox. He saves a .band file and then saves it to the shared folder. After it loads on my side I open it, but it is empty. Does GB even have this capability? Can it save a file with no dependencies? I do not want to export to mp3 or other format. I am trying to share the actual GB file. I don't want to zip or archive at all. We have the space and the forum for sharing, I just need to know how to save it properly in GB, if GB even has this capability. If not, does Logic Express?

You should be able to save the file with no (external) dependencies and share the actual GB file. The .band file is actually a collection of components.
Why not Save As Archive and Zip it? It might travel better when zipped. It can be unzipped and reconstituted upon receipt.

  • Access saved files in iCloud between different computers

A long time PC user, I am considering buying a new Mac Book Air and also a new iMac. I want to save all types of files, pictures and videos  from either machine on iCloud and then access the same files seamlessly from either computer with security, speed and no hassle.  Is this possible? What are the pitfalls? What has your experience been?

Thanks. In what way is Dropbox more disruptive than SugarSync?
I keep my files in folders that usually describe what's in them, I have no wish to create a specific folder to keep files that I want to sync to another machine, I prefer my document files to be in the documents folder, at each end.
Dropbox forces you to choose a new place for your files, SugarSync does not.
They both have PC, Mac, IOS, Android etc apps.

  • Final Cut Pro Problem - editing between different computers

    Hey guys,
I created a final cut project on another computer but no longer have access to clips. So every time I try to open the project the video it doesn't render the footage on the timeline and it asks for the location of the original clips. My question is, how can I edit the project without having access to the original clips?
    Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you have moved the project but not the media the project used?
Then the answer is - you can't.
You need to have the original media files (or complete copies of the original media files accesible to your new computer) in order to edit the project.

  • [SOLVED]Simple file transfer between different os'es

    Hi
I'm searching for some kind of simple file transfer between different computers/os (mainly arch and windows) on local net, without I have to set up any samba/ftp server etc. It would be perfect if i could select a file I want to transfer and then be able to receive it on a different computer.
So far I've tried giver but I most of the times they can't find each other.
Any know how I could archive something like the a bow?

Try using simple file sharing through http server 'oneliner's.
    - Note your host IP (which I refer to by "ip.of.your.server"),
    - Go under your directory where you want to share files and fire a command line :
    Using python : python2 -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000
And you can access your files on the network using http://ip.of.your.server:8000/
    Using php : php -S localhost:8080 -t webrootpath/
Files under webrootpath/ will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
    Using mongoose : mongoose -r . -p 8888
Files will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
You may restrict access, ie.:  -l -0.0.0.0/0,+10.60.100.105
    And have access/error logging (à la apache) too : -a access_log.txt -e error_log.txt
NB.: You may install python or php under windows but mongoose is the easiest thing when it comes to windows -> linux.
