Maintaining a website with Dreamweaver 8 vs. CS3
Hi there!
Please bear with me . . . I am squeaky new to Dreamweaver and
website building in general.
I have a website that I need to maintain that was created in
Dreamweaver 8. I was planning on purchasing the newest version when
the original developer of the website tells me that I should really
use the Dreamweaver 8 version to avoid wonkiness and lots of
cleaning up. My questions:
1. Is this true? If so, where do I get an old version
(Dreamweaver 8) from and how much does an old version cost?
2. If it is true -- and I end up using CS3, what sort of
errors/shifting/wonkiness can I expect and why does it happen
(laymen terms please)? Will it cause a lot of extra work?
Many thanks!

I would say that if you make changes with Dw CS3 - it will
still be ok
in Dw8 - unless you use Spry - which isn't in Dw8.
I still have Dw8 installed and sometimes use it on files
created with
Dw CS3 with no problems.

Please help! adding a search to website with Dreamweaver
confused;
Hi all. i need some help. Im in the process of creating my
website on Dreamweaver CS3. I would like to have a "search" option
on my site.....
I will explain my situation.....stay with me!.......
My website is basically a dating website. So, i need a sercg
function so members can SEARCH for people in there area...
Heres an example. of the search I need....
LOOKING FOR -- MALE OR FEMALE (select box for male or female)
AREA - North West, north east, midlands, etc etc (drop down
box)
PROXIMITY - 5mile, 10 mile, 25 mile etc (drop down box)
AGE - 18-25, 25-30, 30-45 etc (drop down box)
OKay...so i guess you have the idea of what im talking
about...i hope..... I KNOW how to set the table up for the above
(using the FORMS tab on dreameaver)
What I do need to know is - How do i program my website to
return the correct results.
example...... Mr. Smith is looking for a women, within 5miles
of his postcode. he clicks search....HOW DO I GET THE WEBSITE TO
RETURN HIS REQUESTS. Do i need to buy some sort of software???
Hope you can help!!!!
Jemma xxxxxxxxxxI'm afraid that in order to get reasonable search results for
a dating type service, you are going need to do some programming.
This means that along with solid html and css, you need to be adept
at server side script programming and SQL programming. Have you
already create the database? What kind of database design
experience do you have? Seems like you are building a rather
complex site and without the proper skills you will be facing a
rather steep learning curve. You may want to think about hiring an
experienced programmer if you want to get a quality site going in a
reasonable amount of time.
I don't know of any off-the-shelf packages out there that may
exist for a dating type service so you may want to search around a
bit. -
Help, problem with merging expressions website with dreamweaver
hello,
I am hoping you guys have some patience with this question. We created a website with frontpage and it's hosted on an ftp server and we use ftp open and edit the site. My question is, how can I open, work, and edit my site, since it is not even saved on my local hard drive but on the ftp servers of the webhosts.
Thanks,
AndrewI can think of two ways and I am sure there must be many other ways to do what you want to do.
1) You could download the entire site using FTP program like WS-FTP, FileZilla and others. You can point this downloaded folder into your DW when you are defining a new site;
2) The second method is to define a new site in DW and then import a site using DW's own FTP technology; this will allow you to download your entire site from your host.
There are also other tools like WinHTTrack etc that can download the entire site on to your desktop.
The aim is to download everything on to your desktop before doing any editing.
Hope this gives you a start. -
Creating website with Dreamweaver
Hello,
I have dreamweaver CS3 (I know it's old but I have an original license so I need to keep using it) and I usually update my websites using the FTP feature of Dreamweaver. It's great cause I can edit my website and do not need to commit it all the times I change a file.
Said that, today I openen my Dreaweaver and when it commits the changes it shows the error:
Binary mode on sitepor500.com.br does not support the file "criacao-site.css"
I am editing CSS files and it does not upload! My FTP is working normal, there was no major changes in the last days. Does anyone know how to fix this?Deleting a Corrupted Cache in DW

Unless you have a specific issue converting sites from GoLive to Dreamweaver, you should try posting in the main Dreamweaver forum.

Create a website with dreamweaver tutorial video
Dont waste time trying to learn. Get video tutorials from
dreamweaver. Yeas you heard me right.
www.webmaniaxs.comHi bugmenow,
I disagree, video tutorials aren't always easy to use. You
have to stop them all the time and if you don't want any sound (for
example at your work) it isnt possible to use video tutorial. Next
to that there aren't so many video tutorials as normal
tutorials. -
How can i turn a photoshop file into a website with knowing code? can i upload Muse or DreamWeaver?
I created a few images (pages for a site) on photoshop and want to turn them into HTML code for a website- Can i Just upload the file into one of these programs and make a file with the correct code imediatly?
I was reading about using EDGE Reform but i did not understand if i can create the code with it, in the end it says it still needs to be sent to website developer after? You need to look at Dreamweaver as a code editor. You need to learn to create good, clean HTML code with style sheets to make websites with Dreamweaver.
There are tutorials that will take you from a layered .PSD file to HTML. Here's a good one:
http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/site-builds/from-psd-to-html-building-a-set-of-website-d esigns-step-by-step/
Adobe's Muse is a semi-WYSIWYG website layout creator for small websites (1-5 pages). But there is no way you can go from a .PDS file to Muse, you have to start the site in Muse.
I have seen a few Muse sites and they're OK, but there is some code that Muse creates that is kind of odd. If you want a good, clean website that will work for you or your business, Dreamweaver is the best choice. Alternatively, you could hire a pro.

Dang Frustrated with Dreamweaver CS3!
For the past 23 years I have taught myself all the computer
programs I use from Freehand, Photoshop, lllustrator, Indesign,
plus many others yet I rarely had to look up something in a book
and get the answer.
Not so with Dreamweaver!
I can't seem to get anywhere with this program. I have
learned much over the last 2 years I have been using it but I am
NOWHERE NEAR where I want to be. This has been the hardest program
there is for me to learn because of all this stupid code. Go ahead
call me a designer and not a programmer because it is true. I hate
code and after 2 years of this program I hate it even more. I just
want it to do what i want it to do and use visual commands only to
get there!
Can't they simplify the program for us stupid designer types?
I have several books on the program and even subscribe to
Lynda.com for their advice but even after going over the same
module 3 times I still don't have it right.
I just want to take a file from Photoshop CS3, slice it up
and bring it into Dreamweaver and HAVE IT WORK RIGHT! Something
always goes wrong and hours and hours of wasted time is spent in a
fruitless search for what happened in trying to fix it. I have
posts in other forums about this issue but no one has given me any
answers.
Can someone please tell me where to find this answer? The
issues is I just can't deal with those stupid white spaces that
show up when the text goes beyond the slice area from Photoshop.
Here is an example:
http://www.westshorecashloans.com/
Surely there is an answer out there! I have wasted over 3
weeks of work on this one issue and it still isn't solved.
Please, please, PLEASE someone help me find it!
Thanks

DW is neither a DTP nor a WYSIWYG program, even if many
people still
believe that. Without a solid understanding of what HTML and
CSS are
and how they work, you won't be able to do anything useful
with DW.
> Can't they simplify the program for us stupid designer
types?
Why should they? In fact there are other, much more simple
tools for the
"stupid designer types", where you can more or less click
together your
website. But the results are almost always beyond good and
evil. You get
what you pay for.
With every tool you first have to learn how to use it. If I
would go to
the next construction site and ask the guy if I could try the
pneumatic
hammer, what do you think would he say? He would either laugh
at me or
directly call the guys with these nice white jackets.
Same thing with DW. If you don't know how to properly use it,
you can't
do anything good with it, you'll just waste your time or even
shoot your
own foot. Why are there so many broken or even insecure
websites, which
are easy to hack and can be abused for a lot of bad things?
Because many
people don't really know what they are doing and try to make
the second
step before the first one.

Forget it. This will _never_ work right, simply because this
is not how
the web works. Your approach might work for PDFs or other
fixed size
image-based things, but never for a website. The web is
flexible.
> Can someone please tell me where to find this answer?
The answer is either to learn HTML and CSS first before even
thinking
about starting DW or to focus on your own skills and
capabilities as a
designer and ask someone else to turn them into a website.

Contribute CS4 with Dreamweaver CS3
I have a number of sites created with Dreamweaver CS3, and
intend to provide update access with Contribute - but Contribute
CS3 is now hard to get hold of. Will these sites work with
Contribute CS4 if developed with DW CS3: general functions such as
editable sections, checkin/checkout. I don't want to upgrade my
systems yet to CS4.
CS4 suite has much higher system requirement than CS3 - which
probably means a hardware upgrade first - so want to avoid this.
Can't find any info on this anywhere.
ThanksI just read on the adobe website that:
"Contribute CS4 works with Adobe Dreamweaver® CS4
templates"
Does that mean it wont work with Dreamweaver CS3 templates? -
Can I make a (simple and basic) website with Photoshop CS3?
I know there are tools in the Photoshop CS3 that can help me with web design functions such as making slices, animated gif, layer etc. But can it help me to design and create a simple and basic personal website? I don't need any fancy stuff like dynamic html or xml (maybe I will put some music files) but only basic html would be enough. I have MS Frontpage 2003, which can help me to create a website with no problem at all but I like the slices and layers idea on the Photoshop. Plus sometimes a website that was created by Frontpage will not look the same or work properly in Firfox, which is the browser that I use all the time. I wish I could have Dreamweaver CS3 but it is too expensive for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
p.s. If the answer is no, then I would start using Frontpage to help me with that.Forget FrontPage. Forget you ever even heard of it.

FTP sync problems with Dreamweaver MX on Prostores website
I ftp/sync, design and maintain my website Carnelian.com with Dreamweaver MX. My website is hosted by Prostore.com (an Ebay company). They have just recently migrated to new servers and are now requiring FTPES security which apparently is not supported via Dreamw
eaver Mx (which uses SFTP). Because of this I can no longer FTP or syncronize my website, upload files, images etc. Is there some
work around so that I can meet their secure ftp requirements and still use Dreamweaver to ftp/sync my website? I can get a third party FTPES client and upload my site changes, images etc but then my website will no longer be syncronized in Dreamweaver MX which would be a great inconvenience and problem for me.
Is there a solution to this problem?
================================================================================
Here is info on the Prostores migration from their support pages and support personel:
2009-07-26 01:10:46 - ProStores Customer Support
ProStores has decided to abandon FTP as an access method to the platform in order to remain compliant with certification authorities
like PA-DSS and PCI. Dreamweaver does not support FTP TLS/ES or FTPS. Based on the research performed, it appears that Adobe is not
working on providing this functionality anytime soon. The following options are taken from ProStores Knowledge Base:
There are many FTP programs available. There are evaluation, free, shareware and paid versions of different FTP programs. ProStores
only supports FTP programs that support FTPS with SSL/TLS encryption. Below is a list of widely used secure FTP programs (in no spec
ific order) that are compatible with ProStores FTP services.
· FileZilla (free)
· FireFTP (Firefox add-on) (free)
· WISE-FTP 6 ($)
· CuteFTP ($)
· And many others
If you upload images using the FTP process, there are new security settings and requirements. FTP protocol changed to FTPS (FTP over
SSL), also known as FTP/ES (Enhanced Security). Access to the new FTP/ES server will be through the URL myftp.prostores.com.
Update your FTP settings as noted below. In some cases, you may need to use a different FTP client to support the additional securit
y settings required on the new platform.
hostname = myftp.prostores.com
Server type = FTPES or FTPS
port = 21
Logon type = normal (not anonymous)
username / password = primary ProStores login credentials
Connection type = FTPS
SSL Settings = Use SSL-encrypted connection with Auth TLS (or TLS 1)
FTP client requirements = must support SSL-encrypted/TLS connection (Auth TLS or TLS 1)
Several free and paid FTP clients that support SSL encrypted connections include:
FileZilla (free)
FireFTP (Firefox add-on) (free)
WISE-FTP 6 ($)
CuteFTP ($)
And many others"
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Browser: FirefoxI'm going to give Adobe and Google the benefit of the doubt on this one, and assume it is eBay being ridiculous. My anecdotal experience with Adobe and Google is that they do pay attention to technology trends and usually incorporate industry standard technology into their software. If it were just Dreamweaver that didn't support SSL/TTS I might have a different attitude, however blogger.com doesn't support publishing via SSL/TTS either, so I think the error if there is one, is on the Prostores side of things, and I'm guessing it would have made sense for them to support SFTP.
At the same time I assume the Adobe eco-system is more likely to render a solution here than the Prostores eco-system. Is there some sort of plugin/additional piece of software that lets Dreamweaver masquerade a SSL/TTS connection?

Am I able to add items to my website that my users can download with Dreamweaver?
I'd like to add a feature where my users can download my
ebooks from my website for free. Is this available with Dreamweaver
and if not, does anyone have a resource on this method?
Thank you
D SterlinThere are only two ways to process form data -
1. Use mailto:[email protected] as the action of the form
2. Use a server-side scripting method to a) harvest the
form's data, b)
process it in some manner, e.g., enter it into a database, c)
formulate and
send an email to one or more email recipients, and d)
redirect the visitor
to some ending page
Method 1 is quite simple, and is also the least reliable. It
depends both
on your visitor having an email client already installed on
their computer -
this eliminates public computers, or home users without email
clients
installed (more and more it seems) - and on the installed
email client
responding to
the mailto call. It is not possible to use this method *and*
send the
visitor to a
thank you page as well.
Method 2a is the preferred method, since it eliminates the
problems of
method
1, but it means that you have to grapple with
server-scripting somehow (ASP,
CF, PHP, perl, etc.).
Method 2b would be to use some third-party form processing,
like
http://www.bebosoft.com/products/formstogo/.
You would have to decide which of these methods is best for
your needs,
but if it's Method 2a, then start by asking your host what
they provide for
form
processing. If it's 2b, then read their FAQ/instructions
carefully.

Fireworks CS6 with Dreamweaver CS3
Is it possible to buy only Fireworks CS 6 and can it be used together with Dreamweaver CS 3?
That might depend on whether you go back and forth between the two programs or whether you export out of Fireworks and work on the HTML in Dreamweaver. If it's the latter it should work. Fireworks has been 'killed off' by Adobe so there won't be any versions after CS6, I would imagine you can still download it from their website though.

Insert Flash with Dreamweaver CS3 Question
So I have been building websites for awhile and have always relied on the built in insert flash object that came with dreamweaver as I have never had issues with it.
However as I finished a site recently the client had a friend look at it and brought up the red flag that the site was not w3 compliant. So I go and look at the little tool they have and the only error that comes up is related to the insertion of flash on the page.
I googled it a bit and found a number of people saying that the insert flash through dreamweaver will no show up as compliant. A couple solutions to fix the problem.
But before I go down that road, I want to ask. ...Does it really matter here? Seems like Dreamweaver insertion would be compliant? I mean come on the link that the w3 give to fix the problem is a link from a fix created in 2002.
I have never heard of anyone saying no the flash does not show up so right off I am not terribly concerned but it would be nice to know..
Also if it is important and suggestions as to a nice fix to the issue would be great.
Thanks for your time,
ChrisRight you are!
I tend to spot check pages and haven't done a W3C check on a flash embed in my websites (apparently). Just did one pursuant to your question. The page is 100% compliant without the Flash video. has 51 errors, 35 warnings with it. Lots of those errors are Adobe-generated Javascript that handles the flash video insert, skins it and so on.
Here is where Adobe may not be compliant with the W3C.
