Maintaining fill colors in character styles across multiple AI documents

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how Adobe Illustrator (CS6) manages character styles imported from different ai documents. If I create all character styles in a single .ai document and only use them in in that document, everything works as expected--colors, fonts, and typography settings are maintained in the character style, and newly added text can be quickly styled with the character style.
My trouble starts when i want to re-use those character styles in a new .ai document. From the character style menu I use the option to import the character styles from another document, and they import correctly--all of the styles work and style text as expected. But then i save & close the document and re-open it to find that the character style entries are there, but the fills and strokes are all messed up--fonts, sizes, typography settings are maintained, but styles with a blue fill are suddenly filed with black, or some other color.
So, why is this happening? This happens even if the swatches associated with the character styles are imported to the new document as well. I've read that all character styles are based off of the 'normal' character style. But, i've tried a test making sure that the 'normal' character style was consistent between the two documents and i've still experienced the issue.
Here's a short video showing the issue i'm experiencing: http://youtu.be/Z-BG7miwib8 (watch at 720p)
Any insights as to what i'm doing wrong would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

Jamier,
can you please do the following and report what you see?
1. Open a blank document
2. Import a character style
3. Make a text object and apply the style
4. Cut and paste the text object inside the document
5. Save the file
6. Reopen this file
Is the character style still intact?
If so, you could take this way as a bumpy workaround (that should not be required at all, of course).

  • Changing Styles Across Multiple Files

    We have a lengthy catalog that we build in spreads. We don't make a book file, since the pages are all sent individually to our prepress people, and we also have pages that copywriters use to create the copy in the first place.
    Every piece of copy in this book is set up on character and paragraph styles. We start with a master template, so all the styles have the same names.
    We're almost done with the whole thing, and then today we find out from the Office of Secret Self-Important Ivory Towers that they have chosen new fonts for us and not told us what they are until now, so now we have to change every single font from the top down.
    Is there any way to synchronize the styles without building a book file? It's not the end of the world if that's what we have to do, but it won't work for the writers' files, and it's going to require a lot of manual tweaking to keep it from shuffling pages everywhere.
    We're on CS4, by the way.

    If all of your documents share the same style names, then you can do this relatively easily without using the book features.
    Although it is easier to do this by using the book features, what you need to do is open the document that you consider to be your source or master document. Make all the style changes as needed and save it.
    Open the next document.
    Go to the Paragraph Style panel
    In the panel menu, select Load All Text Styles... (this loads Paragraph and Character styles)
    Select the master document.
    Allow the incoming styles to override any existing styles of the same name.
    Cleanup any text as needed, save and close.
    Repeat for all other documents.
    If you have object styles, use the same proceedure with the object style panel.
    If you have swatches that change, you can Save Swatches from the master file, then Load Swatches in the other files.
    Note: this would be far easier to do by temporarily adding all the documents to a book (be sure to disable any auto page numbering in the book) and then Sync from the book panel.

  • Can I automatically synchronize my styles across multiple .indd files?

    I have a book made of 10 separate files. Say I'm working in Chapter 4 and I decide to modify a paragraph or character style. Is there any way to apply the new style to all the chapters without running the Load All Text Styles ... command for each chapter? If I change a style, I just want it to automatically apply it to all my chapters.

    Use the book feature. Once all your docs are in the book, then open the book panel menu and sync your styles.

  • Searching Across Multiple PDF Documents

    My purchase of an iPad hinges on this feature: is it now possible, or will it be possible in the near future to search for specific text across multiple stored pdf documents within Adobe Reader on iOS?

    I have no solution, but a thought: the database factor may seem to be
    a killer. But you could look for a solution designed to read PDF files
    from a web site (by spidering or from a list), which would presumably
    load them.
    Or could do a one off extraction of the files from the database into a
    directory and use that for your process. Probably a very good idea,
    since extracting all files from the database is likely to be costly
    and hammer the server (but can be scheduled at a sensible pace), while
    the search process will (if it is possible at all) doubtless need to
    be run countless times.

  • Styles across multiple documents

    HI,
    Noob question: I have multiple documents that have similar character and paragraph styles. However, every time I open a new document, the missing fonts alert comes up. I've substituted the fonts in one document. How to do the same for the rest of the documents, without having to repeat the substitution every time I open a document?
    Thanks,

    Look up the book feature in the help files.

  • I copy text, paragraph styles, character styles & images from 1 document to another only text copies

    I have a few documents that have text and images that is frequently repeated through many chapters of an In Design book. (Printing, exporting etc.) I used to select all in the source document, Command + C to copy it, change to the target document, Command + V to paste it. It worked well for six months.
    About two weeks ago it stopped working (shortly after an update to In Design). I have text, paragraph styles, chacter styles and images in each document. Only the plain text copies over. This is the same for any document.
    I haven't changed Preferences in six months.
    I'm on a Mac 10.8.2, In Design CS6 version 8.0.1.
    It's driving me crazy! It's a lot of work to reformat each 2  to 10 pages after copying it in.

  • CS6 Character Styles - Keeping Color - Bug!

    Hi myself ad a number of colleagues are having the same issue where the fill colors of character styles are not keeping in the file. You create your text, then import character styles, and then it looks like it works, but the fill color doesnt come across. Or if it does, when you close and open the document, the fill for the text is 100K. We have alargen number of documents to edit, and its being a real pain having to reapply the styles each time. It basically defeats the purpose of having the character style function. Please Help!
    There are some work arounds, but a fix from Adobe would be really needed! please update CS6 before CC!!

  • Unable to reset some settings values in Character Style Options back to "inherited"

    Hi!
    First, unfortunately Paragraph Styles and Character Styles are not so cool as in InDesign in Photoshop. I hope it will be updated in future versions because good typography is very actual now.
    Here is one of issues:
    I can't set Font Family and Color in Character Style Options back to inherited ones, i.e. to reset/empty it. Onse I set some custom font/color for Character Style (manually or after "Redefine..") I can't remove it, only set new one. And since Character Style is another level of abstraction over Paragraph Style this behavior is very annoying - I always need to check what font is set up for characters, change it or even delete this character style and create a new one with same settings but default (empty) font family.
    Fortunately some other settings (font size, leading and all other inputs/selects with editable value) can be reset (emptied) - that's why I consider situation with font family/color as buggy/raw.
    What do you think about this? May be I don't know some secret tricks/technics to fix it?
    Thank you

    I purchased the same laptop from Wal-mart in late August, I have had nothing but problems. Going from one program to another within the computer takes forever, the pages constantly say "not responding", getting on the internet takes all day, anti virus software has been installed, scans have been run which might I add took three days to do because the computer kept freezing and I  had to manually restart. Un-installing programs is next to impossible as every time I start and sit and wait 10 minutes later I am still waiting, try to get out of the program and it won't let me. I try ctrl alt del which doesn't help. I took mine back to Wal-mart a week over the amount of time they allow for returns which is ridiculously short and they would not take it back. I have spent numerous hours trying everything under the sun to get this 2 month old computer to work and to meet up to my expectations of a brand new laptop computer and I am almost ready to chunk it out the backdoor. I am very disappointed in this product and will never buy another Toshiba. My family owns a Dell laptop and 2 HP laptops and we love them. This laptop was purchased for my children to do schoolwork as they are homeschooled and unfortunately they have not been able to do ANY! Take my advice, DO NOT BUY this product!

  • Tagging for Character Style

    Hi All,
    Need to insert tagging (character style name) surrounding the text which has character styles applied in InDesign document.
    Example: This is an example of character style tagging text.
    Please provide JS code for this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mon

    Hi,
        Try this. I'm also fresher...
    First u have to create tags manually with names b, bi,i, sc (bold,bolditalic,italic, small caps)...
    then execute this js...
    docObj=app.activeDocument;
    xmlObj = docObj.xmlTags;
    pageObj=docObj.pages.item(0);
    myTextFrame=pageObj.textFrames.item(0);
    myText=myTextFrame.parentStory.paragraphs.item(0);
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences =  NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findTextPreferences.fontStyle = "Bold";
    app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag=xmlObj[0].name;
    alert(app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag);
    app.activeDocument.changeText();
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findTextPreferences.fontStyle = "Bold Italic";
    app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag=xmlObj[1].name;
    alert(app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag);
    app.activeDocument.changeText();
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findTextPreferences.fontStyle = "Italic";
    app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag=xmlObj[2].name;
    alert(app.changeTextPreferences.markupTag);
    app.activeDocument.changeText();
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findGrepPreferences.capitalization = Capitalization.SMALL_CAPS;
    app.changeGrepPreferences.markupTag=xmlObj[4].name;
    alert(app.changeGrepPreferences.markupTag);
    app.activeDocument.changeGrep();

  • [AS][CS3] Finding text with character style

    Please help to tell me how to find text with a specific character style and then delete the text.
    I had no problem doing this with CS2 but its doing my head in now.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Here you go. This assumes that your character style is at the top level of the panel. If you're using style groups, you'll need to write code to get at the style you want to use.
    //DESCRIPTION: Delete text in named character style
    (function() {
      if (app.documents.length > 0) {
        deleteStyledText(app.documents[0]);
      function deleteStyledText(aDoc) {
        var cStyle = aDoc.characterStyles.item("CharStyleName");
        setupFindText();
        app.findTextPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = cStyle;
        aDoc.changeText();
      function setupFindText(find, change, wholeWd, caseSense, foots, hidLayers, lockedLayers, lockedStories, masters) {
        app.findTextPreferences = null;
        app.changeTextPreferences = null;
        try { app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = find } catch(e) {};
        try {app.changeTextPreferences.changeTo = change } catch(e) {};
        app.findChangeTextOptions.properties = {
          caseSensitive:(caseSense == null ? false : caseSense),
          wholeWord:(wholeWd == null ? false : wholeWd),
          includeFootnotes:(foots == null ? false : foots),
          includeHiddenLayers:(hidLayers == null ? false : hidLayers),
          includeLockedLayersForFind:(lockedLayers == null ? false : lockedLayers),
          includeLockedStoriesForFind:(lockedStories == null ? false : lockedStories),

      } // end setupFindText

  • How to use AppleScript to set "character fill color" in Pages 5.2?

    For Pages 5.2 on OSX 10.9.3, what is the correct applescript for changing the "character fill" of text in pages.
    If you highlight text, you do this via your mouse in the inspector by clicking "style," "advanced option (the gear wheel to the right of bold, italics, and underline), "character fill color (clicking on the multi-color circle, not the dropdown menu), and then choosing a color that comes up in the "colors" dialogue box.
    I've looked all over and cannot find how to use applescript to set the character fill color in pages.
    In some examples (not directly related) I see "character fill" used.
    In others, I see "colorfill."
    Basically, I want to use applescript, embedded in a keyboard maestro macro, to change the background color of the text (not the text color itself) to particular colors.
    Given the changes and updates to Pages this year, and to applescript, what's the easy way to do this?
    Thanks!
    Chuck

    Pages v5.2 still does not include selection-object, or character background color entries in its AppleScript dictionary, as does Pages ’09. Indirectly, using System Events, you can get the text selection in Pages v5.2, but then you can do nothing to change the selection. No assurances as to if or when Apple will mature the AppleScript dictionary support for Pages v5 series.

  • Combining multiple Character Styles

    I'd like to apply multiple character styles to the same words. However, this does not seem possible. One character styles always overrides the other. Please see the attached image for a visualization.
    I tried Shift-clicking both styles to apply them, without success. I guess either I'm missing something quite obvious, or this is not possible?

    Geert DD wrote:
    I don't see why not? If you are a bit into webdesign, you may be familiar with CSS. Here is how you would combine multiple styles onto certain words.
    .red { color:red; }
    .underline { text-decoration:underline; }
    <p>HTML paragraph with some <span class="red underline">red+underlined</span> text.</p>
    CSS rules have a clear order of application (the "cascade"), so if there's any disagreement between rules applied to a given bit of HTML, the rule applied last "wins" by overruling any applied earlier.
    Unlike CSS classes, InDesign styles are not applied in any obvious order, so if more than one style could be applied to a given bit of text, there would have to be some way of ordering them so that disagreements between them could be resolved.
    The "based on" hierarchy of styles prevents style conflicts independently of any given bit of text. The ability to apply more than one style to a given bit of text would necessitate the introduction of a further ordering relation, one that applies only to the given bit of text.
    That could make things very complicated, and its effects would propagate into scripting, de-bugging, and so on. It wouldn't be just InDesign that had to get it right -- the poor befuddled user would too!
    Although I was kidding when I mentioned Russell's theory of types (and amused by the Peter Cook & Dudley Moore parody) I was gesturing vaguely towards the idea that there are some general/logical constraints on classification that go beyond individual applications such as InDesign.
    In general, the least problematic ways of classifying things use categories that are either disjoint or else ranked in a "containment" hierarchy. This is can be seen in many areas of life. For example, an animal can be a member of species A and genus X, but it cannot be a member of both species A and species B, nor a member of both genus X and genus Y. The syntax of XML reflects all similar ways of classifying things, and that is one of the reasons why it is so powerful.

  • Linking and updating colors across multiple illustrator files

    Is there a way to link and automatically update color swatches across multiple illustrator files (CS4)?
    I've saved swatches into an ASE file, and opened the ASE file into multiple illustrator files, but the secondary files don't seem to reference back to the ASE file, when a new version with changes to the swatches has been made.
    Thanks for any advice.

    @SP/RAA
    Jean posted perhaps the best solution for your problem.
    A template is an Illustrator document for startup. You can create a document...place all the colors you want to the Swatches panel....insert contents to symbol, brushes, graphic styles and so on. Then you can go File > Save as Template.
    Now...when you want to start a new document..you could File > New from Template. Then new document will have all the stuffs of the template, including other specifications like rulers viewed...guides...
    But even using template you cannot update a batch of documents...The template is only a document for start...and it does not keep linked to new documents based on it.
    Or you try via script (do not know how further it would help) or try the alternative given by Jean.
    Gustavo.

  • Generic Character Styles - highlight color

    I am trying to create a Generic Character Style for changing the background color for highlighting text.
    Problem:
    What I have done is not generic. It changes font, size, bold etc. type characteristics to when I created the HILITEYELLOW Charater Style. I need a Generic character style that just changes the background color. No matter what multiple font or type characteristics are in the selected text, it just changes the background color.
    What steps are necessary to create a Character style based on previous Character style None* so that it ONLY changes the background color and not touch the font and other characteristics?

  • Matching across multiple character sets

    Would like to know whether anyone has attempted matching across multiple character sets, for example, between English and Japanese: what are the pitfalls to avoid, what are the best practices, and what you would like to see from application/tools perspective as an ideal solution. thanks

    If you upgrade to Logic Pro, you'll get WaveBurner as part of the package which helps you do this, including tweaking your pauses between tracks, fades etc.
    If you have Toast, you can do it there too.
    If you don't have any 3rd. party software, the work around would be to assemble all your songs in order, end to end in a new Logic file, and listen to all your tracks and adjust the relative levels between songs, then bounce out the individual tracks which have volume changes with their new volume settings. Finally you could then use any burning app such as [SimplyBurns|http://bit.ly/c1oglP] to create CDs or bounce them out in Logic with the additional .mp3 option.
    Obviously it's important to listen to your material in order, in context, as some songs will be at the wrong subjective level depending on the tracks either side in the placement. This isn't really important in digital distribution where your material probably won't be listened to as a whole, but as individual downloads.
