Maintaining Links in PDF

Is there a way to maintain the hyperlinks in pages so that
they are functional when publishing to PDF?
Whenever I publish to PDF, all of my hyperlinks are lost.

They get broken at the point the Word document is created.
Because they don't exist there, they cannot become links when you
generate the PDF. If you are going straight to a PDF, behind the
scenes RH has to create a Word document, it just doesn't save it
and you don't get to see it.
There is a workaround on my site but it is dependant on
certain criteria being met.

  • Maintaining links within pdfs

i have created links to several pdfs from a main pdf document.  however when i email the main pdf document the links don't work.  The box is still there and the cursor icon changes as though the link can be clicked on, and when you click on it it changes colour as though it is active, however it doesn't opened up the linked pdf.  How can i ensure that the links are maintained?

    A link in  "MAIN.pdf" goes to "File01.pdf".
[CASE 1] The link you set goes directly from "MAIN" to "File01" OR
[CASE 2] passes up or down through folders.
When you email me "MAIN.pdf" I get it and  save the attached PDF to my HDD.
    BUT!!!
"File01" is still on *your* HDD.
The link in "MAIN.pdf" no longer provides Adobe Reader / Acrobat a true and correct path to target file "File01".
    (aka "Broken Link")
For [CASE 1] I need "File01" available EXACTLY next to where I save the attached "MAIN.pdf" file.
**YOU** have to provide "File01" (and any other files) and make it clear where the file(s) are to go.
    (a pita eh)
    For [CASE2]
Again, you must provide all target files for links in the "MAIN.pdf" file.
You must provide clear instructions fo all folders to be created such that all target files can be properly placed and accessed by the link path *you* created in you authoring environment.
    (more pita eh)
    What to do?
    (1) Combine all PDFs. Use Acrobat to create/set up all desired interactivity within this new PDF.
If file size is large then 'share' via https://files.acrobat.com  — set up you free account if you do not have one.
Or subscribe to and use Adobe's SendNow service (a very nice service and only a nominal $20 / year).
    (2) Burn the files/folders to OSM (CD/DVD) & send this.
    (2) Copy all flle/folders to USB "stick" & send this.
    Be well...

  • Importing Graphics - Word 2008 to InDesign - Maintaining links?

    Hi!
I have an issue where documents are prepared in MS Word 2008 (Mac OS 10.5.7) and then imported/placed into InDesign CS3. The word document has inline graphics which are placed into InDesign as embedded images, however I want them to remain unembedded and linked to the original graphic files when the word doc is imported into InDesign (I have all the graphics in a sub folder within the same folder as the word doc and the InDesign file).
Under InDesign CS2 with Word 2004 I could import a word doc into Indesign and maintain links to graphics (rather than embedded graphics) as long as the graphics were inserted into MS Word via 'Insert > Picture > From File" and then I Ticked 'Link to File' and unticked 'Save with document'. I have done exactly the same thing with MS Word 2008 but I get embedded empty graphics frames in Indesign rather than links to the images.
I then tested Word 2008 with Indesign CS2 and still had the same problem, so am now wondering if it is an issue with Word 2008 or the newer OS?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

    Thanks Bob.
This has made me realise that the documents are being supplied to me as .doc rather than .docx even though they are being created in MS Word 2008 (they have a compatibility setting so that they save as an earlier word version - I need to resolve this).
Am I correct in assuming from what you have said that if I have got the images at the quality I want when they are linked into the Word document they will firstly not lose any quality in Word and secondly when they are embedded in the InDesign document there will be no loss of quality?
I ask this question because basically I am regularly updating large online PDFs - starting with an MS Word master and then importing this into InDesign, making layout adjustments and then exporting to PDF. I therefore need to make the process as quick as possible (which I have done through a number of Applescripts) and one of the things I want to speed up is to have to manually go through and relink the images each time. So either I need some quick way of linking the images, OR (if I've understood you correctly) not worry about relinking the images because there is no loss of quality from when we link and embed the graphics in MS Word to when they become embedded in InDesign? This would mean the only time I would have to relink the images is when we do a printed version (which requires better quality images)???

  • Linking to PDFs but not generating them

I'm using RoboHelp HTML on RH8, formerly using RH6. In RH6, I think there was somewhere to indicate that links to PDF files that exist in the same folder as a topic could be excluded from the compile. That allowed me to maintain one copy of the PDF that was not overwritten. I can't find how to set this in RH8. As a consequence, all of the PDF files that I link to (hundreds of them) are being copied to the Output folder, resulting in horrendous build times. Does anyone know where this setting is located in RH8? ~Carol

I have deselected the "Republish all" setting in the WebHelp (Primary Layout) Generate options to upload only changed files, but that doesn't affect the time to generate.
It will not. That setting is only relevant to publishing. RoboHelp always clears the generate folder and recreates it, as explained earlier.
Is there any way to disable that, do you know?
See Using RoboHelp 8 on my site.
In the RH Help Viewer... ...Note: You must have iFilter for Microsoft and PDF installed on to enable baggage file search.
That's the first time I have seen any reference to the need for iFilter. I will try to find out more but meantime work on the basis that the search is automatic and, in RoboHelp 8, cannot be stopped via the interface. However, as above you can stop the PDF search.
Since I don't have a support account any longer on RH, do you know of any way I can pose these questions to a RH developer?
You get what you pay for.
Even with paid support, you do not get direct access to a developer.
Regarding your idea of applying a build tag to the PDF
It wasn't meant as a suggestion. What I was trying to get at was that a build tag was the only way I could see to stop the PDFs ending up in the output and I explained that had a downside.
See what happens when you exclude PDFs from the search.

  • RH9 TOC Links to PDF files are quirky

I have a project that consists of TOC book links to PDF files. In RH6 I always just manually popped them into the \!SSL!\WebHelp folder and linked to them from TOC books because importing them into the project took days. Or 20 minutes at least. Some of these files were 300 pages, so I manually loaded the smaller files too, to maintain procedural consistency. Either way, manually loading them is fastest so it just makes sense.
I'm doing this in RH9, and it works just fine in the live project. The problem is in Robohelp. No sooner do I close the project and reopen it, but all the books have question marks with crosses through them as if they have broken links. They do not.  The links are STILL fine, and when I compile the project they open, just as they should. In RH6 this wasn't remotely an issue.
Is this a bug? I went back and redid the links twice before realizing it wasn't me, it was Robohelp. So whenever I open a project that has a TOC book link to an outside file, like a .pdf, or .ppt, or xls or whatever, is this going to happen? I lose visual clues for the broken links because they ALL appear to be broken?

    Hi Maureen
I used to encounter this all the time with RoboHelp X5. And it coaxed me into developing what I feel is an interesting and more reliable approach.
Have you noticed that even on a fast intranet it seems to take an inordinate amount of time to open a PDF? I mean, with most of your topics, the user clicks and nearly instantly something happens. The topic generally loads right up in the topic pane. But a PDF, Word document or other file seems to take eons to load. Well, comparatively.
So I developed this thing I referred to as a "docfetch". Basically, I created regular RoboHelp topics. Linked those topics to the books pages or whatever. Then configured those topics to redirect to the PDF, Word document or other.
The expected benefit was that because I was now actually linking to topics in the project, those funky mysteriously broken links in the TOC disappeared. The unexpected side benefit was that users then saw an immediate response to clicking the link. I configured each of these topics to present some verbiage to the effect that they should please wait as the document was being opened. This put a stop to users reporting that things were "broken" as they then saw an immediate response.
The code you need will be placed in the HTML of the topic. Just insert it somewhere in the Head area.
    <meta HTTP-EQUIV=refresh CONTENT="3;URL=File_Name.pdf">
Of course you will want to adjust it to suit your own needs. For example, the line above is configured for a 3 second delay. You may want a shorter (or longer) delay. And you would adjust File_Name.pdf to reflect the path and file name of the PDF (or other file) you are linking to.
    Hope this helps... Rick

  • How to create link for pdf file in discoverer worksheet

    Hi All,
I would like to create a link for pdf file into discoverer report (worksheet).
So that i can open linked pdf file using worksheet link.
Can any one tell me about this?
    Thanks
    Ravi

    Hi,
I think the best way to do this is to use a database directory so that you can access your pdf file as a bfile. Then create a mod_plsql procedure that sets the mime type and downloads the pdf file. You then create a calculation in the EUL then returns the URL to your mod_plsql procedure. You can then include this calculation as a hyperlink in your worksheet.
It is not as difficult as it sounds. Please let me know if you need anymore details.

  • Linking a pdf in dreamweaver

I am learning dreamweaver and I have read and watched many videos on linking a pdf in my web page yet I am still having trouble. I have the file in my webpage folder, called 10brochure.pdf when I view it in sarafi before I upload it, it shows the file is there and opens. Yet when I publish it to the web it says NOT FOUND, The request URL/10brochure.pdf was not found on this server. Please check out www.mmo-stanstevens.com/pages/trophy_gallery.html to see where I am having trouble with 2010 and 2009 pdf, 2 years ago someone else added 06-08
    Thank you

Your pathway to the file seems to be off after looking at your code.2008 and 2007 have "
../pdf/2008_report.pdf" you need the same for 2009 and 2010. Is has a path of
"../09brochure.pdf". Make sure the 09 and 10 pdf's are in your pdf folder in your root and correct the path in your dreamweaver doc with /pdf/10brochure.pdf. Hope that helps

    Hi,
Follow the below blog and it is very useful achiving your requirement.
    in the blog:
    in the below  point,
    Code to send the email
Following code will transform the html content into displayable format and send email to all the recipients. Note: This form also handles the images (static) defined in the smartform, as well as the images defined with html IMG tag (eg: URL link to image on the network).
you have to convert your pDF output into displayable format. then add that link to your smartform.
    Thanks,

  • Dead links in PDF -- any further updates?

I started an lovely ebook in Pages and tested it to see how it would look in PDF, but to my dismay I found that the hyperlinks were no longer live. After searching these forums, I see this topic was discussed last September, and that Apple simply didn't put the capability of making live links in PDF exports into Pages.
Have there been an further updates on this issue? I would really hate to have to resort to using Acrobat. I've used it before and really, I'd much rather use something neat and clean such as Pages.
The iLife suite has this same problem across the board. Lovely to look at, makes beautiful documents, but severely handicapped in what you can do with it. I wish the documentation had said something in the "how to export to PDF" about this omission before I went to all that work.

You can indeed export a PDF file with hyperlinks and retain those active links in the PDF document.
I'm not sure how this does or even can answer your question, and all of your subsequent updates aren't adding much understanding or clarity to the mix. Instead of reporting repeated failures, could you try listing out:
    a. what exactly you are trying to do, and
    b. how exactly you are trying to do that, and
    c. what you expect to see happen when you do it that way, and finally
    d. what you see instead, including the text of any error messages.
