Maintaining previous filing system format within Aperture 3

I am a new Mac user after 20 years with PC's. I bought a 2.3ghz MacBook Pro 15" with 8gb of ram and a 512 solid state drive to try to better manage a photo collection of about 100gb, including a huge set of ancestors photos from 1800 and on. I have been using a simple filing system by creating separate folders for various trips by date and place, such as 2011-03-15 USA, AZ, Phoenix. Each folder may contain photos from several dates over several weeks. I do not want to break out the photos into separate folders by each day. I want to be able to permanently modify, tag, and delete photos from the master file. I also want to be able to export the modified photos using this "date" structure.
What is the safest and most efficient way to do this while being able to take advantage of all that AP3 has to offer?

What TD, Allen, and Matthew said.
There are (at least) two import dialog boxes in Aperture:
. "File→Import" (also on the Toolbar), and
. +"File→Import Folders as Projects".+
You want the latter. It will allow you to retain you current filing system (and take advantage of it).
1. "Folders and Projects" will make an Aperture Folder for every Finder folder in your tree, except the terminal folders (which should be the ones w. images in them) from which it will create Projects. (If you are not familiar with Aperture's parts, [this comment|http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13124533&stqc=t rue] will help, as will consulting the first seven chapters of the [User Manual|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual>).
2. "In their current location" will leave your files where there are. Aperture will create a reference (a pointer) to each file. Your images in Aperture will all have Referenced Masters.
3. "Master File Name" will assign the current file name to the images imported into your Library. You might want to take advantage of Aperture's naming prowess and start with a file naming convention (search this forum) -- but this is secondary to your current goal. If you are satisfied with the current file names, use them for your Aperture images. If you have thought about renaming them, this might be a good time to do so.
4. My mistake (but this is whacked in Aperture). If you set this to either one of the settings that start with "Both ... ", Aperture should import all image files, regardless of format.
By all means:
- Back up all your current images
- Practice on small subsets of images. Import a few folders, a few hundred images, and see what happens. Tweak your settings as needed. Delete the entire Library, and try again (since you are leaving your files where they are, deleting the Library deletes only the references (the pointers inside the Library) to those files -- it does not delete the files themselves).
- Practice until you are sure you have it right, then do a trial run on all of your files. +You can always delete this Library as well.+
And ask more questions. Good Luck.

I reinstalled my system on a new hard drive, from time machine. However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture. iphoto seems okay. New photos take a long time to load as well.
    Have you heard of this?
    Thanks

We need a little more information to be able to help.
However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture.
What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

  • Filing system: events, projects, backups

As far as I know Final Cut Pro X should create two new folders within the foulder films: Final Cut Events und Final Cut Projects.
I can‘t find these folders. Instead there is a folder Final Cut Backups with hundreds of files and more than 800 GB data. Each new file is bigger than the previous one. They seem to copy their predecessors and add new material.
I am afraid that‘s not the way it should be ...
How can I restore a proper filing system ?

  • How to get PDF file that has been transformed into docx into my filing system so I can work on it???

How can I get the PDF file that was transformed into a docx file into my filing system to be able to work on it and translate it as the customer requested?

    THanks for your reply.
Well what happens is I bought the program. It gives you a button to click,
you log in and then a box opens up asking you to select the file, I go into
my filing system (in Windows explorer) select the file, and the program
converts it into docx, my choice.  I can read it there and when I try to
copy and paste it into my file where the PDF version is saved, it behaves
like an "image", and I can't save it.... or it saves likes something you
save on the internet, so you have to go into internet every time you want
to see it.    I have also pressed any amount of buttons to see if it will
give me the option to save it any other way, and have found nothing.  What
I would need is a file in docx.format that I can edit.  People send me
things in PDF and sometimes I can just copy it off the PDF file and save it
in WOrd, then I can translate it for them. But sometimes the PDF file
doesnt allow me to copy the text.  If it is in image form, I cannot work on
it.  It means printing it, so I can copy type it into Word... and for that
I certainly wouldnt need to buy a program.  Its just double the work and
ends up that the job takes twice as long.!
Sorry  if I am a bit dumb with informatics.  But I simply could not find
any way whatever to  copy the PDF file that was transformed into Word, in a
format that would enable me to edit it.
    Kindest regards,

  • Duplicate library within Aperture 3

I'm a novice user whose not gonna know all the relevant information the knowledgeable and helpful folks will need to thoroughly answer my question, but here's the best I can do.  Perhaps with specific questions, I'll be able to provide more information.
The problem:  Aperture contains two librarys:  (1) iphoto Library and (2) Project Library.  Project Library is larger and all projects and photos within the iphoto Library are duplicates of projects and photos within the Project Library.
Solution I'm working towards:  eliminate the duplicate iphoto Lilbrary.
Facts:  I do not know how Aperture was initially set up and how the iphoto Library was imported into Aperture, as hubby did that quite some time ago.  My masters are now referenced on an external drive.  My husband and I both tried to figure out how to properly do this and I just noticed that there were two duplicate folders on our external drive.  I effectively housed the masters in a folder on the external called "Aperture Masters."  I just attempted to send to trash the two duplicate folders:  one named "iphoto library" and the other named "TSP photos."  I left the folders in the trash and have not emptied them from the trash.
After I sent these duplicate folders from the external drive to the trash, I opened Aperture again, and the duplicate iphoto Library is still there.  However, the icon that shows that it's a referenced file now has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on it.  When I click "locate master," it shows me the external drive and the path to the photo I had selected in the iphoto library within Aperture is in red (indicating there's a problem with it).  I located the same photo within the Project Library and there is no yellow triangle with exclamation mark on it on the referenced icon and when I click locate master, I can do so without the path showing in red.
Question:  Is the final step simply to empty the Trash and then the duplicate library will be gone?  Is there anything else with which I need to be concerned to properly eliminate the duplicate library?
Thank you for your time in answering!

One thing to remember is that Aperture does not contain libraries. Aperture libraries are the places where your images are stored to be accessed by the Aperture application. You can have multiple libraries on your system at any one time but only one copy of Aperture the application.
So if I am understanding your situation: You have two Aperture libraries one named iPhoto and one named Project. The Project library contains everything that is in the Aperture library named iPhoto (bad choice of names BTW as it is easy to get confused with iPhoto itself) plus more.
The two libraries do not share any masters.
You now want to delete the Aperture library named iPhoto. You moved referenced masters that this library was referencing to the trash.
This is what I would do: Open the Project library, go to the Photos icon in the Library tab of the Inspector. Make sure the search box says Showing All, select all the images and open the filter HUD and filter for missing images like so:
If the browser is empty then all the images in this library are accounted for and you can empty the trash and delete the Aperture library named iPhoto. If anything shows up then you need to figure out what's going on before you delete anything.
    good lick.

  • Import a shape file to oracle spatial format within an oracle pl/sql proced

    hi,
My task is to import an esri sde shape file to oracle sdo format within pl/sql procedure.
i am using oracle 10g, arcgis 9 and arcsdo, geometry type is line, please anyone could help how can i achieve this task, would be very thankful
    Best Regards,

There are no "in database" tools around that do this AFAIK. Most/all tools are external to the database and have to be invoked externally.
If you created an external "batch file" that did the right processing, you would still have to work out how to execute this batch file from within Oracle. AFAIK the standard method is to use create custom code that uses DBMS_PIPE to communicate with the operating system to execute the batch file. DBAs hate this approach and it does require programming.
The other method could be to write a trivial piece of Java that when passed the full path to the batch file executes the file. You would then load the compiled Java class into the Oracle JVM and then create a simple PL/SQL wrapper around it. I can't do it at the moment, but can come back with the code and instructions later on in the week.
    <SHAMELESS PLUG>
As an aside (it seems appropriate to mention this now), I have been developing tools that do run inside the Oracle JVM an can export Oracle data (including sdo_geometry) to a number of formats:
    * xSV (ie comma separated, tab separated, any other single character)
    * Excel Spreadsheet
    * ESRI Shapefile (including the writing of the PRJ file using a user supplied PRJ string and also I write a MapInfo TAB file to "wrap" the shapefile).
When exporting to xSV or Excel Spreadsheet one can chose to encode the SDO_GEOMETRY data as GML or WKT.
(I am working on a KML exporter as well.)
However, note that these tools EXPORT data and do not IMPORT data.
The tools, currently are running in production at a customer site (tabbed shapefile export option) and work well. Export jobs are defined and given to the Oracle JOB or SCHEDULER and correctly run at the appropriate time writing the data to an operating system directory defined internally (with appropriate permissions) as an Oracle Directory object.
I am now considering selling the exporter tool and am looking for testers. (The pricing of these tools will be exceedingly low.)
    </SHAMELESS PLUG>
Now, while I hadn't planned to write any importer for a shapefile for my Exporter, I might consider it if you get stuck and can't find a satisfactory tool.
    regards
    Simon

  • Cross platform filing system access?

Well, I have used the free NTFS drivers for MacOS and they worked OK. They were a bit slow, but they got the job done. I have also used MedaFour's MacDrive8 on my Windows 7 (x86) systems with levels of success.
I have recently converted to using the Paragon drivers at the recommendation of a user here with much more experience than myself. The MacOS driver for NTFS has worked flawlessly for me, although I did notice one small incident when I re-partitioned and re-formatted a drive, where for some reason it would only allow me to enter a single character for the volume label. Once the format completed, I had no problems renaming the volume, so I'm not sure what's up there. I will have to try to reproduce this to see if it is a problem with the driver, or just a one-time weird error on my system. On the Windows side, I like how the Paragon driver integrates more seamlessly into Windows and just works. MacDrive8 was OK, but it had a few small issues for me, and the Paragon tool doesn't seem to have these same limitations. In any case, be warned that installing any HFS+ Driver on Windows will probably cause our optical disk drive letter to change. There are ways to deal with this, but it can catch you off guard if you aren't expecting it...

  • Error: The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum system requirements by Aperture

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4.  My NVida 8800gt with 512 mb was over heating so I brought and install the ATI radeon hd 5770 to replace it.  Now when I try to start Aperture I get this message "Error: The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum system requirements by Aperture".  All other software works fine, ie photoshop elements and Safari.  When I install my old card aperture will open with no problem, but of course the card will overheat within 10 mins and I will have no video.  I have search on google with no luck.  Will upgrading to Aperture 3 fix this problem?

    5770 requires 10.6.5.
The 8800GT - there is the 350* bake in over 10 minutes - 50% or better chance
you can find 8800GT on http://myworld.ebay.com/macvidcards/

  • Partitioning External Hard Drive- questions about software & filing system

I just got my macbook and I want to use my older external hard drive to transfer data between the macbook and my PC desktop. I have a Maxtor OneTouch II 300gb with only one partition. I have about 80gb of data already on the Maxtor. So my two questions are . .
    1. What is the best software (prefer freeware) to partition my Maxtor and keep the data I already have on it? Or is there a better way?
    2. What is the best setup for the filing system for the partitions? NTFS for one and FAT32 for the other or something else? I want to be able to both read & write to the Maxtor from both the PC and Mac. Appreciate any help anyone can throw my way.
Macbook- Black model   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not quite sure of what you mean by:
    I would like to avoid
moving all the stuff from the external drive to the
mac, and then having to move it all back onto the
    external drive.
But most external drive was formated using fat 32 which theoretically limit to 2 TB and file size limit to 4 GB. Just put a useless file from your pc, and connect your external to your MacBook ,and see if you can copy and or delete that file from your Mac.
You can also check your HD format on PC side by: go to my computer, right click the external HD icon and select properties, and it will shows you the hd was formatted with,...
If you mean you want to format to mac format "on the fly", they might be some utilities for that on Mac side, but I'm not aware of, but why you want to re-format it if the external work for both sides without getting new format, since format that using MAc extended journaled wight result unreadable on your PC side.
    Good Luck

  • Jpgs within Aperture

At the present time, I am keeping my RAW files in Aperture and exporting all photos as jpgs to iPhoto for other apps that require jpgs. Is this the best way to handle this? I read an unclear article that states Aperture automatically stores a jpg. Is this a seperate file, or just for preview?
I guess my real question is: Upon upload to other apps that require jpgs, does it automatically convert the RAW impages I have in Aperture to a jpg everytime to sent it out? Even when I just so a copy?
Thanks for any help out there!

Jpeg's are created, called "Previews" within Aperture. These are used to share with iLife apps.
You can turn generation of previews on or off, change the resolution and change the quality within Aperture/Preferences.
In the project view. you can select to maintain previews, delete them, update manually or update them automatically. I chose manual as the auto setting kicks in too often.

  • Deinterlacing WITHIN Aperture?

Have imported a bunch of JPG frame grabs (created using a program called Movist -- similar to VLC Player). Despite having chosen the frames as carefully as I could to avoid any noticeable interlace issues, the occasional one does contain some small area (a head turning in the background, for instance) with that distracting interlace-split look.
And now for the confusion part:
I notice that while I'm making an adjustment (moving the Brightness slider, let's say), the Aperture preview momentarily becomes deinterlaced -- but then as soon as that new adjustment gets processed the interlacing re-appears.
This briefly raised my hopes that Aperture 3.x had added a Deinterlace adjustment -- but I guess that still falls under the category of "Feature Request Feedback"?
Nevertheless -- does the fact that Aperture can briefly display a deinterlaced preview of a given Version (at least while processing a new Adjustment) suggest there may be some way to "trick" the program into retaining that deinterlaced version -- and thereby avoid the current tedium of having to export the image into Photoshop or some other external app, in order to do the deinterlacing completely outside of Aperture?

  • Dúvida -  NF-e: Maintain Connected Authority Systems - layout 3.10

    Boa noite!

  • SRM system object within Portal: WAS settings with Webdispatcher

    Hello Portal experts,
we have SAP EHP4 ERP system (only ABAP stack).
In order to use some SRM functionality we installed SAP EP (EHP1) and creates a appropriate system object within portal.
We use a  Webdispatcher, so we have to replace within WAS area the local address by the address of Webdispatcher and appropriated port (webserver:567).
The tests of this system object looks as follows:
The address of http://webserver:567 can be retrieved
The problem are the results of following tests:
    http://webserver:567/sap/bc/ping
    http://webserver:567/sap/bc/webdynpro
These errors occured because the both pathes /sap/bc/ping and /sap/bc/webdynpro do not exist on Portal/Java engine.
    Questions:
How can we connect ABAP backend to Portal with extra Webdispatcher?
What are the setting within WAS area?
    kind regards

    Hi Thom,
Is your webdispatcher in front of your portal? or in front of the ICM of your Backend System?
If the applications that you want to enable via your EP are of the type: WD for ABAP, BSP, IAC or ITS then you should also have a webdispatcher in front of your Backend System (in addition to on in front of your portal).
    Please check the following link:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/48/9a9a6b48c673e8e10000000a42189b/frameset.htm
On this page, scroll down to the last example. Although the image is there to explain "High Availability of the SAP Web Dispatcher" it gives you a good view on the request respond steps.
One rule of thumb is that the EP system itself doesn't act as a reverse-proxy. In other words, if an iView points to a WD 4 ABAP application on the Backend then the actual WD4ABAP application is rendered in an iFrame.
From a technical/connection point of view the client (browser) has 2 connections, one to the EP and 1 tot the Backend.
Allot of people do not realize this when they start there project...
Cheers, hope this helps you a bit....
