Maintenance on iMac

Hi all-
I mostly use my PowerMac that is in my siggy, but recently was trying to help the wife with our iMac G5 that she mostly uses. It has slowed significantly, and although I've checked for most current updates, Safari seems to quit quite a lot on her, and some pages (like even CNN homepage) are not properly formatted in Safari window.
I'm thinking of doing some work on it tonight freeing up space, first of all, but I wonder if any of you have other ideas on some maintenance that I might do to improve performance. I did a search on documents from the Apple site, but was a bit overwhelmed by what was returned for me.
Regards-
Dave

Have you tried emptying the Safari caches? You might like to get OnyX to clean out other caches and speed things up. Try using [whatsize|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/44018] to see if you have any overly large files that you can junk. Check Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if anything is hogging your CPU.
These will be a good start, please post back and let us know, how they worked out,

are there any good free tools (or out of the box ones) for mac maintenance? my imac seems to have slowed down considerably over the last months, and i'm wondering if i can do anything to scan/repair. I know a usual answer is buy more RAM, but hoping to avoid that if possible. here's what i got for output from etrescan:

Which is fairly low and forcing it to work on the slowest part of the HDDs platter.

  • Routine maintenance for imac

I have been using my imac for over a year now and have never installed an antivirus program. Does an apple computer need antivirus software? If so, which kind?
Also, do I need to do routine maintenance for my imac such as:
    .spyware search
    .defragment the hard drive
    .and of course the antivirus
    .scan disc
Or, what else do I need? My computer is running fine, but may be a little slower browsing.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

    Hi Doxy,
Christopher is right: Yes, you can install some antivirus and spyware watch software, but it's not (yet) necessary on a Mac.
Just make sure Firewall is on, in System Preferences > Sharing,
and of course never open an application that you're not sure of, this kind of email common sense behaviour...
    Maintenance:
Pretty much almost everything is automatic in Mac OS X.
    All you really need is:
    - Backup!
    - Keep at least 15% free space on your hard drive.
    That's it.
    You can also:
    - Run the "Daily", the "Weekly" and the "Monthly" tasks (using OnyX or such utility), all three together once a month is fine.
    - Repair permissions (Disk Utility from the Utilities folder) after using an Apple installer or Software Update.
Before an important update or twice a year:
    - Repair Disk (Disk Utility from the Tiger DVD).
    Slower browsing:
    Try deleting this folder
    Home/Library/Safari/Icons
and emptying Cache (menu Safari > Empty Cache)
or equivalent if you use another browser.
This will slow a few pages down for only a few minutes, and make it start fresh with no old, usused stuff that you keep since the beginning.

  • Maintenance of iMac

In my former PC I had a bunch of programs such as e.g. to clean, compress and rearrange the registry, to clean the disk (disk doctor), to remove history, temp Files, cookies; to remove viruses etc.; to defragment the disk and others.
In addition anti virus programs and fire walls.
I don't seem to need such programs on my iMac?
    Is this a correct observation?
    I really wonder!
    Thanks for your advise!
    Harry

Because you are recent convert and are still getting used to breaking old habit I'd strongly recommend you spend some time using your computer and looking over the following web sites. May people like yourself that have switched are so used to spending a lot of time on their Window's PC's maintaining them that they begin to think thats simply the way computers are in general. With Mac's there is virtually nothing to do except use it. While Mac's are far from perfect compared to PC's the experience of using one is dramatically better.

  • Does a data external drive needs maintenance under iMAC OS X 10.6?

Hi, I am new to Apple. I wonder if the external drive I use for storing data, WD My Book Essential 3TG, needs any maintenace such as defragmentation under Windows since data is deleted as needed from it.  I have an iMac OX 10.6.  I am not using WD software with the external HD.  Thanks!

To be more precise, I currently use another WD 1TB external drive to store data.  I want to reformat it in HFS+ and use it with WD sotware to automatically and continuously back up my iMac complete drive in case, for any reason, something goes wrong with the iMAC HD and it needs to be re-installed with all the settings and data saved before the problem occurs.
I have used before the 1TB HD and WD software to back up the iMAC HD and believe it should not an issue here, unless I misunderstand how to best save the Mac HD complete data (or image?) in case something goes wrong.
All that being said, I intend to use the 3TB external drive only for storing data from iMAC (Microsoft Suite files, picutres, music, films and the like), as needed.  I have not formatted it yet, but intend to do it for MAC only in HFS+.
I am no computer wiz, but, reading from WD manual and assitance site, I understand that using the 3TB drive to simply store data has to be done without the WD software since the latter is intended for constant perpetual back up only.
If I am mistaken or misunderstood how to proceed, please provide me with your comments.  All I want is to use the 1TB drive to restore iMAC to its prior condition if needed and the 3TB drive to safely store data, add and remove files manually as needed.
    Your help is much appreciated!

  • IMac clean-up and maintenance

Are there any good, SAFE programs available for clean-up and maintenance for iMacs?

Hard drive getting full or near full?
Do a search for and download and install OmniDisk Sweeper and OnyX.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded  .dmg application installer  files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • IMac early 2008 getting slow. EtreCheck summary in french

    Hello all,
I have tgis problem with my iMac for a while (I guess since I switched to OS X 10.9).
Some applications are getting slow opening and closing (Mail, Calendar, AddressBook, iPhoto, ...)
For example, active windows of Mail won't close immediately when I click onto the red button. I need to do it many times, switch to another app and back to Mail, and then try again. It is an erratic process. And this happens with other apps.
    Rather frustrating.
Here under is the description of my problem in french (pretty much the same as I wrote here in english) and the picture of my iMac by Etrcheck.
If anyone can help, that would be great.
    Thank you for your attention.
    Description du problème :
Depuis assez longtemps maintenant, mon iMac ralentit.

From comparaison with previous check, it appears i recovered Hard Drive memory: from 58.53 to 107.86  Go.
I don't see the Safari item anymore. Nor the Bit Torrent stuff.
Mail seems to be more efficient. But when OS X reinstalled, Mail opened at first with re-load of all mails; i saw 23 569 mails total reloaded from SENT, to DRAFT, RECEIVED, etc ... for the last 10 years. Some of the mails have files included. Could be the problem for Mail being so slow. Even now when I open Mail it takes time to order properly all emails by date (and this is only for the INBOX display)
I don't know for the RAM. Kind of expensive and the result might not be as expected.
I still can't take screenshot with the keyboard shortcuts... something went wrong i don't know what. If someone has a clue I could then send shots of some of my windows to make sure I have things right.

  • Issues restoring/connecting Shuffle with PGP installed

It seems like Apple registered my iPod Shuffle that I bought today back in December (huh?), so I can't use the chat to contact the Apple staff regarding this issue (and no, I don't have a fax, don't even have a fixed phone line). Still, this might be relevant for others.
Just home with a shiny new Shuffle, connecting it, updating it and messing around with it. Tried the Restore function, and that was obviously something I shouldn't have done...
I've got a trial of PGP 9.5.x installed and it seems like it messed something up. After I use the Restore function in iTunes or the separate iPod Reset Utility to reset, format and restore the iPod, it isn't recognized by the OS/iTunes anymore.
After quite a few moments of research, I found out that after the iTunes Restore/iPod Reset Utility, the partition scheme for the Shuffle became pgpwdeMBR_Diskscheme, which obviously must have something to do with PGP's Whole Disk Encryption functionality. And as long as the partition scheme was wrong, iTunes thought the file system was corrupt and it seems there was nothing that could be done to correct it.
The only way I got around this, was to connect the iPod to a PC with Windows XP and run the iPod Reset Utility on there. So now I got a FAT formatted Shuffle, but at least it is recognized on the Mac.
I suppose I could have uninstalled PGP and hoped that whatever got messed up got restored. But, this is an extremely annoying bug and it seems like Apple need to do serious updating on the iPod Reset Utility which in my opinion should be a solid maintenance tool.

  • Quicktime refuses to launch

Forget the advice on permissions and prefs. I've done it. Not only that, I've completely wiped my system twice--the last time with the 7-pass option, and it still won't launch.
Oddly enough quicktime movies and trailers play in Firefox but not in Safari--and before I wiped my system, all the pro video apps worked just fine.
Could there be a hardware incompatiblity?
I've got a Lacie 160GB firewire(800), a d2, dual layer dvd drive, a TVone Analog to digital converter and internet via a lynksys router and a USB hub connected to the system.

I would run this Automator action:

  • Lets play music while we listen to the fan!

Hi, if that caught your attention, I have a question to ask of you.
Does the fan an my imac, isight, late 2005, right before the intel, so I guess that makes mine the last of the G5s, supposed to be turning while i listen to a CD in Itunes?
Let me remind you , Im not listening to a .mp3 or any .aiff or .wavs stored on my computer. waht I am talking about is just popping in a CD and listening to it through Itunes.. Does the computer suppose to have a fan running constantly?
And is that even a fan? i dont think it is!
It sounds more like the CD spinning around in the CD Drive.
Is this mormal in my version of IMAC or any IMAC for that matter?
    Thanks!
    Stars rewarded!

RAM is certainly sufficient. Insufficient RAM would make the processor and hard drive work harder, thereby increasing heat...higher fan activity.
Monitoring heat and other internal information - Your machine is equipped with sensors monitoring the heat levels in various sectors. Hardware Monitor keeps track of your machine's temperature and fan levels. For example, my CPU temperature runs between 50 and 60 degrees centigrade. If this temp goes up into the upper 70's or beyond, then there is possibly an internal problem, or the machine may need to be in a more ventilated area.
If you're machine is running on the hot side, then additional processor activity, e.g. using the SuperDrive, could result in higher fan activity.
System Maintenance - Repairing Permissions, emptying Safari cache and cookies are good steps. There are other maintenance steps you can follow.
There's quite a diversity of opinion about what maintenance steps ought to be run and how often. Dr. Smoke and Macworld represent two examples.
To me, the ultimate maintenance is to have a fully, backed up and bootable clone of your system. Everything else comes next. I use SuperDuper for creating the backup.
My suggestion - first, I use a 3rd party product called OnyX. If you decide to use OnyX, go to the applications "help" menu and read about the various maintenance options available in the program. Next, given the fan problem you describe, go to the automated tab which runs several maintenance routines, selecting the following boxes -
    verify & repair permissions,
optimize the system - complete optimization,
    execute maintenance scripts,
    user cache,
    system cache,
    apply on "all accounts".
This app. will probably taken between 10 - 20 minutes to run.
    When completed "restart".
The restart will take longer as the system and user cache files need to be rewritten by the system - btw - optimization and cleaning the system and user cache files are used very infrequently, i.e. if the system is exhibiting unusual behavior. Otherwise, I do not recommend their use.
Lastly, yes, the SuperDrive will be louder when you are playing a CD. However, my computer fans do not come on. Also, sometimes the CD might be a bit warped causing excessive vibration - not unusual. Playing directly from a CD is never going to be as quiet as something imported into iTunes. There's too much mechanical activity in the drive for that to happen.
Post back with results after you have a look at the maintenance suggestions.

I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for my iMac (Mavericks 10.9.4), downloaded it and have attempted to install it 10 or more times. I have done all the usual maintenance steps (repair permissions, repair disk, etc) and it still won't install. All goes well until the installer gets to "Running Package Scripts" then it stalls or hangs up and does not finish the installation. It runs and runs and runs. It never finishes. I wind up having to force quit the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi jtento ,
Kindly enable the Root Account for the MAC and then try the installation there (in the root account). Please find below the URL to enable the root account.

  • What regular maintenance needs to be done on iMac to keep it running efficiently?

What regular maintenance needs to be done on iMac to keep it running efficiently?

As long as you don't have to force quit your computer because it has crashed, then the only things year really need to do is (1) maintain a current backup (preferably more than 1 actually, I like to keep one backup out of the house in case there's a fire or theft) and (2) keeping your software and OS up-to-date.
If you experience a kernel panic (your screen will darken and you'll get the message to restart your computer - in several languages) or if you have to hold the power key to force a restart you may experience disk corruption. After such an event you should run Disk Utility and perform a verify disk. This won't repair the damage but will tell you if you need to repair the damage. If you do get such a message, depending on your circumstances and the OS you are using, you'll need to restart your computer with the OS installation DVD or the recovery partition (if you have Lion) and run the repair disk function in Disk Utility.
Windows users are used to doing much more to keep their computers healthy but this is really all you need to be concerned with on a day to day, month to month basis with a Mac.

  • Imac system maintenance

    Hi,
I've had my imac for just over 2months now and I love it. But, what I'm wondering now is, should I be doing any maintenance on it? (I think I've seen it called "housekeeping" here) It's my first computer so there was no migration from another system, therefore I started with absolutely zero software/data. Now I have around 1000 photos, 1200 songs and a few downloaded items(widgets etc). I'm a newbie so please tell me what I should be doing to ensure my mac keeps working at its best.
Oh and what is the security update? I've updated mac os to 10.4.2, should I download the security update too?
    Thanks
    Lee
    p.s. I leave it on 24/7

    Hi Lee,
Mac OS X does almost everything automatically, so you don't need to do much to have it work always at peak performance:
    - Always keep enough free hard drive space (10-15%) on the boot drive.
    - Back up (using a file-to-file method, -> no cloning every fault on external drives).
    - Let the 3 nightly periodic maintenance tasks run (CPU on 24/7 is OK. +since 10.4.2 they run delayed if CPU sleeps at night).
    (+ some cautious steps:)
    - Repair permissions after each software install that required an installer.
    - Clean users', browsers' and fonts' caches before an OS X update (using Yasu, OnyX or such an utility).
    - Use the cache-cleaning restart to restart from your Tiger Install DVD and,
    - Repair Disk with Disk Utility.
    (+ you can also:)
    - Rebuilt Directory with DiskWarrior.
The Security Updates are generally good for your system. So are the OS X Updates.
Before applying them, always disconnect all periphericals (+ iPod, HD, etc) and it is a good idea to follow my "cautious steps".
In order to keep them backed up, you can use Software Update's option "Install and Keep Package", or you can download them directly from Apple.

  • IMac G5 Maintenance

Hi eveyone, I just got first computer, an iMac G5 about 3 months ago, and I was wondering if there is anything I should be doing to maintain my Mac. (Like a defragment, disc clean-up, etc etc)
    Thanks!

    Hi Liz and welcome!
The beauty of OS X is that there is really very little maintenance that the user needs to perform. Unlike Windows, there are not a ton of anti-virus or spyware updates to perform and then scan for, which eliminates a lot of work.
I consider two applictions to be essential. First is Cocktail which will allow you to perform every maintenace task without delving into Terminal to execute scripts and such. The other is SuperDuper which is not a maintenance program, but a data backup and disk cloning tool. If you have an external FireWire drive - and you should - you can make an exact bootable copy of your internal drive that you can use to recover data from or to boot from if a software update hoses your Mac.
Those two programs cost $14.95 and $27.95 respectively. I am not associated with these companies at all. I am just a happy user of their products.
OS X take care of minor defragging on its own. If you want, programs like Drive Genius and Tech Tool Pro offer disk optimization, but I have never used them.
If you want, you can also download a copy of ClamXav anti-virus software. While there are no viruses for the Mac, you can unknowingly pass them along to your friends. That's not cool. ClamXav is free.
BTW, never ever ever install any Norton disk utility on your Mac. Symantec no longer supports this program for OS X and it has been known to cause more problems than it can solve. There are much better Mac friendly programs out there.
Edited several time for typos. Sorry.

  • How do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life

I recently purchased a Mid 2011 27" 3.4GHZ i7 /16GB Memory iMac and would like to know how do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life, Does apple now support Trimm or is there some thing else I need to do? Defrag?  I do not store anything thing but OS and APPS on the drive
    thanks

There is nothing you need to do to the SSD. Do not attempt to defrag an SSD as there is no need and uses the device excessively. TRIM is supported only if the SSD is an Apple device so if you reformat the SSD there's no need to Zero Data for garbage collection.
