Major 6600gt Problem - Need to pick your minds

Heya everyone ... I need some experienced minds
So i got a MSI 6600gt AGP the other day and have been having insane freezing problems. Lets start with my specs...
Athlon64 3200+ cpu - 1gig PC3200 ram- MSI 6600gt agp (have used Cd Drivers and official 66.93 to no avail) - Antec 430psu - Latest Mobo Bios from my PC vendor - Windows Service Pack 1 w/Directx9c- Use DH DriverCleaner to the letter before each driver install
I should have everything to make this puppy go but it's not. One thing of note is that the card worked at my dads house.... then i took it back to my house and the problems started. I thought it may be the older nature of this houses wiring so I took things off my power strip and also went out today and got a 430watt (replaced the old 250 watt psu) antec PSU from Circuit city but the same freezing still persists. I can try and load Joint Ops or HL2 but then it just freezes. My bios is set, I'm doing clean driver installs with proven drivers, I have a more than adequate PSU, the card isn't running hot at all, but I have no joy! Ohhh and yes... I did connect the one molex connector to the back of the card to power it. Please tell me if you have anything thought about this.
One thing though... yes it worked at my dads (got a 7500 3dMark03 score) but me getting the new 430psu should have fixed the potential of a power problem yes? Could it be that i dont have windows Service Pack 2?... i doubt it...all that is a security update. Also would using Driver heavens TuneXP 1.5 hurt anything with this install?
This seems like a hard one...give it a shot if you could
UPDATED >> I DL'd Service Pack 2 and a utility from MSI that tells you if the Driver is current and if the VGA Card Bios is up to date (Both of which were)... I also Disabled TuneXp 1.5.....Nothing happened...Same problems

Hi, I had the exact same problem witha leadtek AGP 6600GT, OpenGL works fine but any DirectX game just freezes. I searched all the forums I could find & found loads of people had the same problem with no fix in sight I've RMA'd the card hopefully for a re-fund and got my self an FX5900XT, overclocked it a bit & it's performong pretty well (3DMArk 01=14251, 03=6023). The problem seems to be mostly limited to the AGP version so I'm gonna wait till it's time for a complete re-build before I get a GeForce 6 and go the PCI express route. Sorry I'm no help but you are not alone :(

  • Major iPod Problems, Need Help Solving

One day I was casually syncing my iPod video with my computer to get a few new songs uploaded onto it.
Suddenly, the iPod freezes up, shuts itself off, restarts, and magically it has forgotten everything and pretends it is a brand new iPod.
No problem, I think, believing it will just need to load the songs again and everything will be fine.
However, this is not the case.
The iPod would then continue to load all the songs, shut down after loading them, restart and again pretend it is brand new and lad all the songs again.
This continues to happen again and again.
I try to update my iPod, figuring it may just be a version error or somesuch nonsense. The updater refuses to work and actually causes my iPod to crash, saying it has a diskwrite error.
It refuses to "System Restore" on my computer, so I run the "System Restore" on another window computer that I own. And it runs just fine, making the iPod load songs once more.
    And I think, problem solved!
However, again, this is not the case.
I load it once, everything goes fine.
The nxt day, after buying more songs, I try to upload and after the upload, the iPod shut off, restarts, and pretends to be new once more.
I go through the "System Restore" process again, but afterwards, the iPod all out refuses to upload my music fully, shutting off about halfway through the process each time.
And now whenever it is plugged into my computer, windows says it is unreadable and must be reformatted, so I run the updater and it says that there is an "iPod manager internal error" which could basically be another language considering my only basic knowledge of computers.
Is there any way to repair my iPod at home? Or must it be sent in to Apple?

    GREAT NEWS!
Last night, through some very thorough digging in the
"Search Discussions", I found the answer and now my
iPod is running perfect once more!
Thank you very much for your help b noir. Without
you, and many others on this board who had their
problems solved by equally helpful people, I would
still be digging through Apple's support section to
    no avail.
PS. I found the answer in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?message

  • Major Printing Problem-Need Assistence

Since updating to 10.4.5 I can no longer print graphic files, except .pdf. iPhoto, Safari, Photoshop no longer print a graphic file, will print text or very small files. Mail, Printshop 2 will print. Word will print text files, but not graphic files.
What I have tried: Diskwarrior, dumping plist files. Latest printer driver, and everything else I have done in the past, checked this list and Adobe's forums, no answer. Printer: Xerox 8550DP. Tried generic driver and Xerox,s. Everything worked just fine until the 10.4.5 update. I NEED to print large graphic files. It's costing not to be able to. How do I backdate to 10.4.4?
Any other suggestions? It seems every other update breaks something in printing. Frustrating. This time seems to be the biggest break. After 4 hrs. troubleshooting and no fix in sight, I need HELP.
    Thanks

Our office had a similar problem when printing to our Canon iR3220 printer in from one of our iMac G5 computers (10.4.6).
I researched the error and I discovered software that was able to rectify the problem. Of course, you should download at your own risk/discretion, but we have been using it for a day and are able to print with no problems whatsoever.
    Here is the link:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15970
Read the information carefully. The download and subsequent re-creation of the printer in the Printer Setup Utility was a breeze, at least for us.
I hope this fixes your problem as well. Good luck!

  • Error message - "You need to restart your computer". With Kernel Panic Logs. Please help identify the problem.

Hi, just now my computer just popped out an error message saying that "You need to restart your computer". I was able to power the iMac back (and i'm typing from my iMac). I did some research about it and it has something to do with the kernel panic..either hardware or software. Since i was able to power back my iMac, i supposed it was software-related problem? Here's the log from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
I'm sorry it was quite long and i have no idea how to attach the text file which i have saved. What could be the problem here? And any suggestions to avoid this from happening again? My heart skipped a beat just now.. Hopefully it was no something serious such as hardware problems..
    thank you!

Suggest you uninstall SoundFlower, LogMeIn and AirParrot and see if that changes anything.

  • D/L Firefox 7, Flash 10 doesn't launch. Never had this problem w previous Firefox. I'd see error msg "you need to update your Flash, this video won't play".

The Flash 10 does not launch, Firefox 7 does not recognize this add-on at all. I d/l from Adobe, Flash page:"Installation successful". But Error message still reads "You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video." I've even temporarily turned off my antivirus before D/L

There are two different versions of Flash, the '''''ActiveX''''' version for IE and the '''Plugin''' version used by most other browsers.
1.Download the Flash Plugin version setup file from here: <br />
    [http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version]. <br />
Save it to your Desktop.<br />
    2. Close Firefox using File > Exit <br />
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed, <br />
    {XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
    3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
    4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
    * On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen). <br />

  • Major system problems, hanging up at startup.

I'm developing some major sytem problems with my G4 Mac. It all seemed to start with a jumping cursor and then a dying mouse. I could not get the Mac to startup with several trys. It wouldn't even start up off of my external drive. I would get the first four icons in the upper right hand corner of the screen and the it would hang. I tried all of the usual fixes- permissions, disk utiliy, Disk Warrior, zapping pram. I finally started unplugging external items and getting back to original Mac- switching the firewire port in the back of my Lacie external drive helped for awhile, but now I'm getting the jumping cursor again and fearing I'll get a hangup again. Any ideas on how I can solve this problem? If not, can you point me somewhere for instructions on how to reinstall the system software? I have already installed a clean system on my external drive. Once I reinstall all of my apps there, and get it running properly, can I move all of that to my internal HD somehow? My original system disks for this computer is Jaguar 10.2 if that helps.
    Thanks for your help,
    Dick Skover

    Dick,
    Some observations and notes.
Have you tried using a different mouse, or changing
the port it is plugged into?
Yes, I tried and am using a inexpensive Logitech optical mouse. The one that came with the computer seemed to get very eratic and then not work at all. I did try plugging into different ports and that didn't make a difference.
How did you upgrade from Jaguar 10.2.x to
    Panther 10.3.9?
I upgraded the simplest way, I guess. I had read about more complex ways to do it at the time Panther came out, but also heard you could do a simple upgrade. I don't remember the exact steps I used. Boy, this is way more complex than my original Mac in 1984.
What size is your Hard Drive, and how much space is
available? I should say I have quite a few applications.
My HD is 75 Gig with 17 Gig available.
Is your installed RAM original or added?
Yes, it came installed when I purchased it: 1.5 Gig
In one post you wrote "My original system disks
for this computer is Jaguar 10.2..."
I heard something back when Panther came out that the fact I started with 10.2, didn't allow me to do certain things like archive and backup.
But in another, you wrote "Yes, my original
Panther disk and then updated everything via
    Internet."
    Please clarify.
When I decided to install a clean system on my external HD I just used my Panther 10.3 disk- I didn't go all the way back to 10.2
"Yes, Disk Warrior found some problems, I don't
    know exactly what they were."
Were the errors corrected? Have you rerun Disk
Warrior, to see if they are indeed repaired?
Actually I ran DW today again on the internal HD and it came up with a couple of problems that it said it repaired. Should I keep running it until it doesn't indicate any problems?
A couple other things you can check.
Open System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account >
    Startup Items.
Is there any item in there that you are not familiar
with, or did not put there yourself?
Yes I did try that- I had a repair person come in to help me. He did point that out and we deleted items that didn't need to be there. What he suggested did help for a week, but the problem came back. I called him again, but he said the only thing left to do was re-install.
From the Utilities folder, start Activity
    Monitor.
    Select Active Processes.
Watch for whatever process is hogging %CPU.
Yes he ran activity monitor also- there didn't seem to be programs hogging the processor although we deleted those that look familiar.
I also have a question about the title screems that pop up on start up. In the past I used to have several things being checked as it went through the process, now I get welcome to Macintosh and that's it. I seem to remember indications that Macaroni was running, but no longer see any of that. I do have Macjanitor also and thought that one of those automatically runs at startup?
I will run pseudo daily, weekly and monthly tasks now. Is this something that Macjanitor does, or should I run the maintenance scripts periodicaly?

Background: This is my second MacBook. It is a week 32, I have been using it for 3 weeks now, hasn't given me any serious problems, and is usually kept on (either with activity or sleeping) for several days in a row. The only suspicious thing happening lately is when I turn it on, the screen has flashed brightly really quickly, then back to black quickly, and then it starts to load like normal. So if anyone knows what that is either, it would be of help.
This issue: I was on my MacBook tonight, using the Internet and iTunes, like normal, and out of nowhere the screen dims down and in the middle is a black box that says "You need to restart your computer. Press down on the power button..." in like 4 different languages. So, I did. Then I turned it back on and it loaded fine (but gave me the "Mac OS X shut down unexpectedly" message).
The only thing odd about my use of it tonight would have to be that I was using it on my bed, so maybe not enough air was getting to the bottom of it. Could this cause it to force to shut down?
Once again, this is the only major issue I've had with it so far. My old MacBook had several problems but never the "You need to restart your computer" in the black box one.
    Please help!

  • I-touch 4g users! Can I pick your brains?

Am thinking of getting the I-touch 4g, was going to hold off until the 5g came out but its so up in the air and it feels like too long to wait, plus I'm hearing mixed things about it and seems like it wont suit me a much as the 4g would.
    So, questions!
    1. Can I read my email on an i-touch? Like hotmail, yahoo, googlemail etc or do I have to set up a new account for it- does it let me read emails at all? And also can I respond to them on the touch?
    2. Can I get a spotify account and use that to listen to music or do I need to pay for music to listen to it/stream on an i-touch? I know there is a spotify app but not sure if it can be used for both the i-touch and the i-phone.
    3. How safe is it from being dropped? I've had a nokia phone, an LG handset a very old nano and various sony MP3 players, all don't seem to mind being dropped on the floor from about 4 ft high (however accidentally!) as they still played fine, worked fine and had no cracks of bits fall off them- if they did (eg the nokia) it was fairly straight forward in terms of clicking it back together. Is the i-touch as safe as this or is it prone to collecting cracks on the face?
    4. Can you get google maps on an i-touch?
    5. Do you think there are any things you'd improve on the 4g model you have/have tried?
    6. Is it possible to download i-tunes on the move? (eg not connected to a computer) or is that just the i-phone?
    7. Do you have any tips on what to download software wise or on any changes to make to make the i-touch work better once bought?
Thankyou so much for any help, I've no idea who else to ask about the i-touch as everyone seems either to have the i-phone or be anti apple!

  • Trying to recover from constant kernel panics 'You need to restart your...'

Since last night I've been having major problems with my MBP. After installing some software on my Windows 7 Bootcamp partition, and following a restart, I got a kernel panic and the message "You need to restart your computer.." in 5 languages, and the screen would freeze.
Disconcertingly the desktop video was totally screwed up - the best way I can describe it is that a looked like a really, really bad 8-bit display, with huge blocky pixels.
Multiple attempts at pressing and holding the power button, then restarting, simply replicated the problem. In the end I was eventually able to boot up using a superduper clone. I decided to reformat the MBP HDD and copy the clone over. However, during the process the screensaver came on and froze the system, so I had to restart and repeat the process, this time switching off energy saver preferences and the screensaver.
So I'm back up and running (for now). I'm about to restore my energy preferences and test out the screen saver. Fingers crossed, but in the meantime, has anyone else come across an issue like this?
I've got 3rd party RAM installed, have had it for over a year, so not sure if this is the problem (hasn't been so far). As part of my initial troubleshooting I tried resetting PRAM but this had no discernible effect, other than to make the patchy block video more uniform (if that makes sense?)
I haven't tried the Apple Hardware Test yet, just got to find my original disks! Spec of MBP as per signature below.
Lastly, after I restored my system a browser window appeared, pointing to a file in my system library which contained the following:
    # File lib/activerecord/connection_adapters/postgresqladapter.rb, line 116
    def quote(value, column = nil)
    if value.kind_of?(String) && column && column.type == :binary
    "'#{escape_bytea(value)}'"
    else
    super
    end
    end
Any views / comments / tips greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to post exactly what came up when I was luckily able to surpass the grey screen. I don't know what to do, and I can't find the startup disk that came with the computer 3 years ago.
    HELP please!!!

I have SP Server 2010, and when I try to DELETE a rule within an existing Audience, "Property (Account Name) = domain/username", I get this error, "An error has occurred while accessing SQL database or system resources. If this
is the first time you have seen this message, please try again later. If this
problem persists, please contact your administrator."  When I try to "MODIFY" the rule I get this error, "One or more values typed on this page are not valid. Check the text for the indicated fields."
The last time I checked it was working, I'm not aware of any new updates installed recently?  I did a full Profile Synchronization as well, but still not working, please advise? -- Evenstarline

    Hi Sara,
First of all thank you very much for your prompt responses. Here are my comments to each of your suggestions below, and just to let you know I am using a Farm Admin account.  I
was able to do this way after we upgraded from SP 2007 to SP 2010 as well.   I would like to mention I'm not a SP expert, just been given the responsibility due to another person handling it just left, so apologize with some of
    my novice questions below?
    1. When I change the Operators to "Contains" or "Not Contains" get generates this error below.
Error generating in red towards top of the audience page..."One or more values typed on this page are not valid.  Check the text for the indicated fields."
Error occurred where you enter your "Value"..."Could not resolve the user identity. Please re-enter the account name."
    2. We have a 3-server-tier topology (SPWeb, SPDB, and SPFarm).  Does the updates only apply to where the Central Admin is installed, which is the "SPFarm"?  I checked all
3 servers, and NONE of the updates (KB2899494, KB2889845, and KB2883055) you'd mentioned are installed.
    3. I'm new to IISRET, I need to be extra cautious of what I run in production, is this safe to run with no problem?  What does it do?  And How do I run it?
    4. I'm also new to viewing the ULS log.  I'd just downloaded a viewer for it.  I'm assuming the only logs I need to be concern with viewing are within the SPAdmin (where Central
Admin is installed)?  There's so many of them, what should I be looking for exactly?

  • You need to restart your computer/can't mount Macintosh HD

My problem is a bit of a complicated one and I have a lot of background info to explain, therefore I will try to go into great detail so please bear with me.
A couple of days ago I used Boot Camp to install Windows Vista on my Macbook. Everything was working fine and I used vista with no problems for a few days. Then yesterday I was playing a game in Vista and instead of manually quiting out of the game I took the lazy way out and just pressed the power button on my Mac which I had set in Vista to power down the computer. After a few second Vista shut down like it should have and the computer was off. I then pressed the power button again to turn on the computer. My startup disk at this point was Macintosh HD so I just let it boot up onto that volume.
And that's where the problems began. OS X booted BUT not all the way. It went past the startup chime, past the gray Apple, all the way to the blue screen with the rotating gear. But then it just stopped there. At first I thought the computer was just slow starting up because I shut down from Vista in a strange way but after a substantial amount of time of OS X not going past that point with the blue screen and rotating gear I decided to restart by pressing the power button for a few seconds and then pressing it again to start up. It went to the same place and hanged again. I did this 3 or 4 more times with no luck.
At this point, I consulted my Macbook manual and found out what to do if the computer doesn't start up. The best solution I could find by looking through pages 43 to 45 was to *zap the PRAM*. Simple enough, I restarted the computer and did the key combination and it restarted. Upon being restarted, it no longer went to the blue screen. No, no, not even close. It showed me the gray Apple logo and then after a second or two showed me the dreaded "You need to restart your computer" screen in four languages. No matter how many times I restarted and booted into OS X, it always showed that.
Now I have tried rezapping the PRAM probably ten times now and all it does is it shows me that as I have now learned "kernel panic" screen.
So I thought maybe I could repair the volume using Disk Utility on my OS X Installation DVD. So I did just that. I repaired the Macintosh HD volume. And that's when I noticed something strange. The Macintosh HD Volume was grayed out. I could still click on it and Disk Utility would still display options for what I could do with it but it was greyed out. It didn't take me long to find out that the volume was not mounted. I noticed this because my "Untitled" Windows Vista volume was not grayed out and had an "unmount" button. Again it didn't take me long to figure out that I should just click the mount button and my problems would be over. So I clicked and nothing happened. It just did something for a few seconds but didn't mount it. I don't know how many times I clicked on that **** button (out of frustration) but nothing happened.
And this is where I am now, with no idea about what I can do. My biggest worry is that I'll have to format the Macintosh HD and reinstall OS X but that's really my last, last resort because I have documents that are not backed up anywhere else and it would be a great hassle to restore them. If I was wiser I would have bought backup software for my Mac but I only bought it a month ago and went on an overseas trip in a very far away place a few days after buying it.
Anyway, it would be great if there was some sort of solution to fix this problem without wiping my volume clean. If there is none, and trust me, I'd try anything as long as I don't lose my files, then is there some sort of utility that can back up my volume onto a DVD or external hard-drive or something without booting up into OS X??
By the way, if this helps in any way: I have no problems booting up and using the Windows Vista volume.
Thanks in advance, and please help me.

    Hello,
First of all thanks for the reply. The only problem is that I've already tried what you suggested. When I press the option key on the keyboard with the installation cd inserted I see what I am supposed to, the CD, Windows Vista and Macintosh HD. When I select Macintosh HD it does that same thing, goes to the "restart your computer" screen.
If I try to change the startup disk from the OS X Installation disk the only two volumes that show up are "Windows Vista on Untitled" and the "OS X Installation" disk, no Macintosh HD to even choose. I believe the reason for this is because Macintosh HD but as I have already said, it just can't be mounted.
I think the reason that Macintosh HD shows up when I press Option at startup is because Apple has hard-coded it in so that it's always there, no matter if you can actually access it or not depending on whether or not it's mounted.
Right now the best thing for me is to find out how to mount Macintosh HD, if it has to be done manually through Terminal I'll do it, I just need the syntax but something tells me if it doesn't work through GUI it probably won't work through command prompt.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. Let's hope we get something.

  • "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for seve..."

    Hello,
I have recently been getting this same message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." whenever I start up my computer. It happens about 95% of the time. I have been reading on different forums that I should reset the PRam and the NVRam and I have been doing so and it does help as it does EVENTUALLY start up (sometimes takes me 5-10 min. to get it to start up).
I have also read that it may be the RAM that is loose, so I did check that and made sure that the ram is properly placed (which it is).
I don't know what else I can do. Should I reformat and reinstall Mac OS X?
Here is the exact error form the dump:
    IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 64:87
    AppleACPIPlatformExpert::start failed
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x55c095): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"Macbook 2,1\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.26/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
    Debugger called: <panic>

Well just got around to installing the new HDD and RAM yesterday, and I am sad to say... that the problem persists. :/
I reseated the memory and made sure they were in there properly, and I also installed the HDD and ran DiskUtility before I erased/reformatted and installed a fresh version of MacOSX Leopard, then updated to Snow Leopard.
As long as I am using my computer everything works fine, the problem occurs when the machine is shut off or put to sleep for a long period of time. Because when I shut it off and turn it right back on a few minutes later it works, or if I shut the lid and open it 10-20 min. later everything works fine, it's only when the machine is off or asleep for long periods of time.
So, I do not know what else can be wrong.
Should I try to take out the old RAM and just leave the new module in and see if that works out? See if that specific module is faulty?

  • Why do I get an alert saying "Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. How can I solve it??

The full alert is " Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard drive is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features."
This is just started three/four days ago. I need assistance quickly as I can't access any secure sites e.g bank accounts/homepage etc.

  • Keep getting message - You need to restart your computer - iMac freezes

My iMac freezes without notice, a dark screen comes over the monitor and the message "you need to restart your computer" appears.
This happens randomly and I have no idea what causes this. I thought perhaps it was just a loose power cord, as the cord does seem quite loose.
However, it happens after the machine has been running for some time. Before I have a chance to save my work, the computer tells me it has to shut down. It's not a consistent thing, so it's hard to know if it's the cord or not.
This also happened half way through watching a DVD. Nothing was touched or moved, so it wouldn't appear that this is being caused by a loose cord.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? (I'm running Tiger on this machine with 700+ megs of RAM plus am using a Mac keyboard. Airport is installed but not in use.

    Hi there,
I would first make sure your Mac is or isn't on any list contained here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/imac.html - you may in fact have a faulty power supply which is covered by repair extension through Apple.
    Here's a brief explanation on a Kernel Panic: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
