Major Alt-Tab Issues
Hi there,
I've been experiencing issues for a while with Alt-Tab in regards to gaming. Build 10061 seems to have exacerbated the issue, as it spread to more games. About 90% of the time I Alt-Tab out of a game the game will crash. I can force quit the program via
task manager, but the system does not recognize the game as non-responsive. This is pretty crippling. Hoping to find some information on this issue and to see if I'm the only one.
Thanks in advance
Hi,
The Alt-Tab functions fine in my preview build 10061 while I'm not playing any games. So if you close the game, then does the keyboard hotkey functon fine with other programs?
I suspect this issue might be related to the compatibility of that game with Windows Technical Preview, you can browser the game vender website and check if someone else has the same problem, or another possible factor is that you might have to reinstall
the video adapter driver or change the display resolution, check if it can make any difference.

Hi all!
My problem is Compiz window switcher acts kind a weird on my system. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I dont even have to restart my gnome session - for example, it can work for five minutes and than suddenly become buggy again (i guess bug on/off `triggers` when new windows are opened).
These 2 videos are recorded on same gnome-session, with 1-2 minutes gap between.
http://not.justdied.com/vid/001/alt-tab-fine.ogv
http://not.justdied.com/vid/001/alt-tab-fail.ogv
As you can see, compiz switcher fails @ drawing window titles.
Anyone have ideas how to solve this? I got up-to-date arch with gnome, nvidia driver 190.53. If u need some additional info, pls ask.
Tnx in advance!

Wish I could be more help. I will say if you want a DE with similar functionality and a lot more customibility try compiz-fusion with fusion-icon, lxpanel, and myGtkMenu from the AUR. Thats my setup and it is pretty user friendly. myGtkMenu uses a text file for configuration and has an example one that shows the syntax; its really easy. lxpanel is a little large for a panel program but it has a lot of nice little extras.
Why fusion-icon? Which program to you use to log out of X? For me, I use Compiz itself, so if I switched window managers with fusion-icon, it would kill X. Different Strokes.
I recommend Xfce4-panel if you do use Compiz Standalone. It has a lot of excellent plugins and it still very lightweight. Plus its taskbar and workspace switcher work properly with Compiz. -
An Alt+Tab app-switching icons issue
This may sound trivial, but it's really bothering me.
When I switch apps with Alt+Tab under GNOME, there is this low resolution image-missing icon, for certain programs.
And I don't really mind those few programs not having their own icons, it's the low res generic one that I'm annoyed with.
So, ok- I went out to search for this icon's source, and I actually found out that these image-missing icons reside in /usr/share/icons/gnome/<RESOLUTION>/status directories.
And, to my surprise there is actually a perfectly good 256x256 .png image in its appropriate directory, called image-missing.png
Worse still, I tried to remove (and backup) all the low res ones, leaving only the 256x256 one in place, but to no avail.
Somebody care to explain all this to me?
Thanks.
Last edited by abraxyz (2012-11-17 19:39:26)I am still having this issue. I've noticed it on my old iMac with a wired keyboard and mouse, my new iMac with a wired keyboard and magic mouse and lastly my MPB, with obviously a built in keyboard and mouse. It's not a failed USB device or failed hardware IMO. It is more likely a bug with SL or a third party app.
Though I personally don't run any third party apps in the background other than Dropbox.
Has anyone else out there still been seeing this issue?
I actually took a short video of it happening tonight, you can see it here:

Windows 7 Blue Screen Issues With Alt-tabbing From WoW
As the title says, lately I've been having blue screens which are mostly caused by wow.
Previously I've had the occasional bsod (once a month or so) when alt tabbing, but it was pretty rare. However recently, I've had something more like 1 a day, usually caused by alt tabbing out of wow. It seems the longer I'm alt tabbed the more likely it
is to happen. I haven't experienced the same problem with any other game, although the occasional monthly ones usually happen when I'm changing my music as I alt tab out of League of Legends.
I downloaded bluescreenview and it appears the cause is some combination of win32k.sys as well as ntoskrnl.exe Based off the fact that it is happening more with a more demanding game, I'm guessing the problem is
most likely due to a bad stick of ram, but I'd like a second opinion.
I'll attach a few of the most recent dump files (the one today is slightly different than the ones last week which seems slightly odd).

Thanks in advance for any help, and I hope image files are okay :)Thanks, and it's not, no. You can't exactly debug pictures :')

fffff900c25efcf0. This does not make sense, and is essentially not logically possible.
The hardware was told to write to 00000000`00000020, and the hardware came back and said 'I cannot write to
fffff900c25efcf0'. Another way to think about it is if you kindly asked the waiter of your table for more water, he writes it down, but comes back and says 'I'm sorry, but we're all out of coffee'.
1. Uninstall any/all installed Asus bloatware, I for example see Asus PC Probe, and AI Suite.
2. Remove and replace avast! with Microsoft Security Essentials for temporary troubleshooting purposes as it may be causing conflicts:
avast! removal -

MSE -

3. If the above fails, you have faulty RAM.

Multiple Instances of the Same Excel Document in 'Alt-Tab' List
So I am having a very weird problem, and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I was recently given a new laptop at work with Windows 7 and Office 2010. It has worked pretty well so far, but recently I have been noticing something very strange. While
this problem is quite small, due to how I use windows and my habits of alt-tabbing between multiple documents throughout the day, it is causing a serious problem.
This typically only happens when I have multiple excel documents open, and am tabbing between them or other documents or windows. For example, I have ClientList.xlsx open and need to cut and paste a cell from it to FinalReview.xlsx. I have 'ClientList' open
and just clicked Control+C to copy a cell. I click on 'Alt-tab' and while the icon in the alt tab list appears to change, I am taken immediately back to the same document. What is happening is that there are actually two separate copies of 'ClientList'
in my alt tab list. If I press and hold 'Alt' and then hit 'tab' twice, I can pull up the other excel file, 'FinalReview'.
At any point in time, I can click on the 'Alt' button to see the list and see three Excel icons. There will be one large excel icon with the name 'Microsoft Excel - ClientList.xlsx', and then right next to it will be two smaller looking excel icons with
the names 'ClientList.xlsx' and 'FinalReview.xlsx' respectively.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I have spend hours searching for a resolution on the internet, as well as calling my work's tech support line and have not found anything remotely close to this as even being an issue.
Thanks in advance for your help.Hi,
First, I would like to verify whether this issue only occurred with Excel? Have you checked the Excel settings? You can perform a
system restore to see how it works.
In addition, I suggest you try the following:
1. Test the issue in Clean Boot and
Safe Mode
2. Create a new user to test if this issue still exists.
Thanks,

[Solved] Alt-Tab window switching no longer working after update (JWM)
The next issue I am trying to straighten out after a recent, long-overdue pacman -Syu, is the loss of window-switching functionality using the alt-tab key combination. This is under the JWM window manager, by the way. The alt key seems to work as expected when, for example, firefox has focus: if I hit alt left arrow, the browser goes back to the preceding page. But if I hit alt and tab together, say, in the browser or when a terminal has focus, it seems to be read as though I were pressing only the tab key. So, with two windows maximized on the desktop, the alt-tab combination does not toggle between them. If the terminal has focus I can see the cursor jumping over a tab space each time I press the key combination.
Can anyone offers pointers on how I might resolve or begin diagnosing this issue? I should mention that another change I did in the wake of the update was to make the system log me in and start the GUI each time I boot the machine (as discussed at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … h_profile). I'm not sure why that would have any effect but I thought I should mention it. I think this is just a pretty standard pc105 keyboard by the way.
Input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
James
Last edited by jamtat (2013-02-01 17:07:32)Thank you for your input, anonymous_user. I decided, on reading it, to compare my .jwmrc with the /etc/system.jwmrc file. I noted that, in my .jwmrc, the keybindings section was empty, while that section in the /etc/system.jwmrc had several entries--and even one that seemed to refer to the alt-tab key combination. So I copied that section into my .jwmrc, restarted JWM, and the key combination now seems to be working as it should. Granted, it's a bit strange in that it doesn't open some kind of dialog box with the names of open windows, showing you in list form the windows you're scrolling through. But it does take you to other open windows when, after you've hit the tab key one or more times, you release the alt key. So the issue is resolved and was pretty simple.

Alt-tab in RDP no longer working
alt-tab while within a windows remote desktop was working and for some reason stopped working although shift-alt-tab does still function. I looked on my older mac which has not had the same updates applied and it does still function there.
How would I go about finding what has removed this functionality to restore it? I presume some application has grabbed the keystroke and is eating it.
ThanksI did not find a solution for this, but I did start up my old mac which has not had any updates applied since I got this new mac in October and found the alt-tab was still working there in rdp.
As a note, if I did not mention it before the shift-alt-tab does work which is the same functionality but in reverse order. This makes me believe it is something grabbing just this key combination.
I do not know if there is a global way on the mac to see who is getting which key - if there is please enlighten me.
Thanks for keeping this question alive as I am interested in learning how to track down these issues on a mac. On windows, I would fire up spy++ and see who is getting the keys. -
GT70 Dominator Pro 2PE Freezing on Alt tab
Hi there, first post just wondering if anyone can think of any fixes I haven't.
Basically for about a little over a week now my laptop freezes whenever I alt tab out of a game. I can play fine, games will run great but as soon as I alt tab out and then back in the game locks in place. I can then no longer alt tab back out, and if I bring up task manager I cant click anything either. I can bring it up but as soon as I click on a process to attempt to terminate it my mouse switches back to the in game cursor and its locked again. All I can do is ctrl alt del, then sign out then back in, very frustrating.
I have all the up to date drivers, I have ensured that for both my intel video card and my Nvidia card. My windows updates are all up to date. I have the most recent bios update. I can't really think of what it would be.
Thanks in advance for your time

this could be a issue with game itself just my guess since i have problems like this myself few times on some games when you alt tab out then back the game .exe status changes from Running to Not responding. and remains like that all time so either that is issue with game itself or it could be something else causing it but idk exactly what but i still think it is more likely game itself.
I assumed that at first too, as it was mostly just WoW that was doing it. But now Diablo 3 is doing it, I'm going to check other games when I get home this evening. I can't see anything about it on Blizzards support forums, usually something like this occurs after a patch and is fairly widespread. -
Very frequently I cannot click on any links within firefox. I have to either alt-tab or minimize the browser in order for me to navigate through website.
This appears to be only issue with firefox and nothing else on my computer as I don't have this problem with any other program or web broswer.
I needed to alt tab 5 times just to get this question submitted, very annoying! That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar or the Babylon extension that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links and buttons in that part of the screen not clickable.
Firefox freezes the computer for about 20-30 seconds (not even Alt+Tab works), the screen blinks black and then it shows the desired page. Does that several times at the beginning, then sort of stabilizes.
This happens even if I simply hover the mouse over bookmarks, not even opening a page.
And waiting for this to happen some times or closing and re-opening seems to make it work ok again.
I've already disabled almost all add-ons (I'm using only one for Flash and NoScript right now), reinstalled Firefox (8.0.1), restoring only the bookmarks from an older version.'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.'' -
Alt tabbing with full screen games in Gnome Shell
I'm using gnome shell 3.6.2 and whenever I launch a full screen game (like heroes of newerth) I can't alt-tab out of it or change to a different work space. I can do this in XFCE, KDE (with compositing disabled) and unity (have a press it a few times) but I can't do this in gnome shell. Is there a workaround I can use (besides starting it in a different X server).
EDIT: I tried the package sdl-nokeyboardgrab and the libx11-nokeyboard grab and tried running hon as:
LD_PRELOAD=libX11-nokeynomouse.so HoN/hon.sh
but it still doesn't work. When I alt-tab/change workspace it shows the adwaita cursor (instead of the HoN one) and kinda blinks the gnome shell desktop.
Last edited by Draucia (2012-11-22 13:25:46)Hello bferretti...sorry to hear you're having issues with the hot corners.
I was playing WOW last night and started playing around with the video options. I noticed there are two full screen options now - Fullscreen and Windowed Fullscreen. If in Fullscreen the hot corners are disabled for me. If I use Windowed Fullscreen then the hot corners are still active.
Not sure if you've taken a look at that...but just thought I'd pass along that info.
Thanks! -
Microsoft Excel 2010 alt-tab causes part of screen to freeze
One of my clients is having the issue above. When he opens 2 different Excel applications, and starts doing usual work, which involves copy-paste from one Excel to the other one, and changes between them using alt-tab, then all of a sudden part of one Excels
screen freezes and you can see the cells being at the wrong place. When you minimize the window and then come back to it, then it's fixed, or when you scroll down and back up it will fix itself. I have found other people having the same problem on the forum,
but the only thing I haven't tried is getting a new graphics card installed instead of the Intel HD one. I even tried uninstalling the Intel HD driver, letting Windows use some default driver, but the problem persisted even then.
The machine has Windows 7 installed, Office 2010. Hardware is standard Lenovo T420.
Since I've tried everything and the problem is still not fixed I'm hoping for some more ideas.
PS: I'm 100% sure not using alt-tab would fix the issue, or reverting to Office 2007, but those fixes are not acceptable for my client.check out thread below, it suggests this thing:
I experienced the exact thing you are describing and it was very annoying. I eventually found an
option under File - Options - Advanced, in the Display category, called "Show all windows in the Taskbar". Uncheck this and alt-tab will stop trying to interpret each spreadsheet in the same instance of Excel as a different application. Then
to switch between spreadsheets in the same excel instance, use ctrl-tab instead.

IT Stuff Quick Bytes -
hi,
Im using windows 8 (not 8.1) and i have HP spectre XT
Im using the hebrew version which is right to left.
when i'm usin alt-tab the tabbing order is messed up - when i hit tab again the square goes one tab to the left, but the text corresponds to the app on the right - which is the app i eventualy end up in
can you help me?
thanxHi,
Alt + tab is a shortcut that is used to switch between top-level windows without using the mouse. It will not affect the text.
Did this appears with all applications or special applications?
Alt + Tab switching is interrupted, what about Win + Tab? This task can switch also.
Furthermore, you can try to login with Clean Boot or Safe Mode to see if the same issue occurs.

"Alt-Tab" for Disabled Frame under Windows
when i set a frame setEnabled( false );
I cannot toggle it using "Alt-Tab" under Windows
The frame is disappear from the list.
Any setting make this possible under the frame is not enabledI am having a similar issue with switching to English input being impossible with Windows 7 on my MB Air (13"). I have keyboard inputs activated for Chinese, both Traditional and Simplified (both of which I need), and in my keyboard settings in the "Region and Language" control panel utility, English input is also activated with the Apple keyboard option. However, no matter where in Windows or any program I happen to be, the language bar only shows the two Chinese options, and toggling is only possible between them, not English. Oddly, when I first log in to Windows, the "EN" for English *DOES* appear, but that's the only time it does. Truly perplexed and deeply annoyed. Any insights anyone?
-
Catchy title, but true. When I click Alt-Tab to switch between apps, the icons blink and alternate very quickly. I can still switch programs, but usually I "miss" and another app opens up - like Bridge. Not a show-stopper, but very annoying.
I've seen video driver issues do similar, though "missing" the app has not usually part of that.
Now, for some questions:
1.) do you have Window Blinds?
2.) is Aero on?
3.) is Sidebar on?
4.) what video card and driver version?
5.) do you have the MS InteliPoint mouse driver installed?
Good luck,
Hunt
