Major Crash Problem: Fan or Something More Serious?

Hi everyone,
My 3.75 years of computing bliss have finally ended. My 2006 MacBook Pro (15.4", 2.16ghz, 2gb RAM) has suddenly begun freezing, crashing and restarting seemingly irratically.
Sometimes it will just freeze. Sometimes it will crash (the dreaded "shut down" instrucions and generate a crash report on restart--which I save). Sometimes it will restart itself. And, strangest of all, sometimes the optical drive will make noise as if it's starting up, then the screen will go off--but there are still things running and power to the USB devices.
I know for certain that my left fan does not work. It hasn't for over a year. I've always kept an eye on my temps and elevated the computer. Since I am legally blind, I cannot use a computer that hasn't been set up specifically for me so I can't afford to send it in for repair unless absolutely necessary. I use my computer for almost everything; shopping, banking, paying bills, scanning (or photographing) and then enlarging stuff I couldn't otherwise read, etc, not to mention the occasional paying job.
But if the fan is the problem, why did it start to have problems so suddenly? And why would it crash only a few minutes after startup? Or while I'm not using it for anything and nothing is running? There doesn't appear to be a pattern. Occasionally, it will crash right after startup. I've tried starting it in safe mode with no success.
If I take it to the Apple store, can they tell me if there's something else going on? I can't afford to pay to have it fixed twice if it's not the fan, much less be without it twice. The store is a 75 minute drive and I don't have a car so just getting there is no small feat.
I knew this day would come eventually; I just hoped it would come before the warranty was up!
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
-- Stephanie

In case you do have a dying hard drive, make your first priority to do a good backup if you haven't already and keep it up to date.
You can do a comprehensive check of the physical health of your hard drive with SMART Utility:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is more sensitive than Disk Utility, and may sense impending drive failure before Disk Utility does.
Laptop hard drives have an average useful life of 3-5 years, and yours is well into this range.
If you do end up having to have your hard drive replaced, be sure to have them replace the left fan, or even better, both fans, since the right one has been doing the work of both for a year.
At one time, I believe that if a thermal sensor didn't work, then the fan wouldn't work either. Later things were changed so that if a sensor didn't work, the fan would run at full speed by default to protect the computer from overheating. I'm not sure which system you have.
If you can, boot from your original gray system disc and run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It might give you a clue as to what is wrong in the form of one or more error codes.
Also, there might be an AASP that is closer to you than the Apple Store. If so, they could run some diagnostic tests. There would probably be a fee for this.
Are you in the US? Apple has a flat fee repair program for some Macs, but I'm not entirely certain which ones. It would be worth asking Apple about this.
Also, if you are in the US and end up sending your Mac off to the repair depot, be aware that turnaround can be very fast. My niece sent hers off on a Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM, and had it back the next Thursday morning.
Also, if you do end up needing to replace your hard drive, make a bootable clone on an external drive using Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner:
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
With a bootable clone, you can clone back to a new drive, and your settings and everything will be as they were before.
Good luck!

  • How to diagnose dead battery vs. something more serious?

I'm in the 11th month of ownership of an MBA, purchased brand new last year.  128MB model.
My battery, I believe, is dead but I'm not sure how to diagnose the matter.
Here's what's lead me to this conclusion:
MBA charger light stays off when plugged in (not dim, but off).   I've had the dim light issue as well, earlier this year, and Apple replaced the charger.  This time, however, the light stays completely off.
Battery icon in top right corner tells me that no charger is plugged in.  The icon is in battery mode.
Battery charge keeps decreasing steadily in % value despite charger being plugged in, indicating that battery is continually discharging.
My wife has an MBP, and I've used her 85W charger on my MBA with the same result... i.e charger light stays off.   I know that the MBP charger is in good health as it charges the MBP with no issues (orange light).
I've used my MBA charger on her MBP, and it charges the MBP just fine!!! (orange light)
I've done an SMC and NVRAM reset on the MBA, which hasn't affected the situation.
Since I'm on 15% charge on the MBA, I've shut it down and have booked an appointment with Apple to have it looked at.
In the mean-time, I'm hoping to get some clues from fellow MacBook users on this forum.
I've read somewhere that if it is indeed the battery that's faulty, then once the charger is unplugged, the MBA should turn off immediately.  This isn't the case for me... I'm able to run off battery (whatever tiny amount of charge I have left) with the charger unplugged.
Hence, I've ruled out the charger being faulty.  I'm not so sure that the battery is faulty.  I'm thinking the issue might lie elsewhere... maybe the magsafe connector on the MBA?
I should also mention that when I opened the lid on the MBA earlier this evening, before noticing this charging issue, the screen flickered brightly once.  The screen looked and operated normally after the flicker.  Not sure if there's a connection.  I'm beginning to think there is.
I should also add that, even though the MBA has been a pleasure to use, the past 11 months haven't been trouble-free... which adds to the suspicion that the issue might indeed be somewhere deeper.
    A brief history of "issues":
About a month or so into ownership... my fan, one day, decided to suddenly spin up to full RPMs and stayed at that speed for an eternity.  I'm used to the fan speed steadily going up in direct relation to the CPU temp.   However, the CPU temp this time was 35C the entire time (according to iStat Menus)... i.e. the MBA was "stone cold".  It made no sense for the fan to be on full-blast.  In addition, I had nothing running. No intensive software.  Not even Safari.  Just "Finder".   Turning the MBA off naturally caused the fan to stop.  However, the moment I powered it back on again, the fan came back on at full speed again.
An SMC reset fixed the issue, and I was good to go.  This issue occurred again a few months later, but I solved it right away with the SMC reset.
After another month or so I noticed, while listening to music via headphones that were plugged into the MBA, that I could hear an electric "hum" in the headphones.  Then all of a sudden the hum went away.  I discovered that the hum was present only when I physically touched the metal case of the MBA and went away as soon as I removed my hand.   I mentioned this to a Genius bar... err... genius and he seemed perplexed.  He wasn't able to offer an answer.
I've also noticed that when the MBA is charging, and I run my finger-tips over the MBA's metal surface that I feel static.  When the charger is unplugged, I no longer feel the static.   Again the genius didn't have an answer.  He probably thought I was weird.
I'm thinking my MBA might have "grounding" issues, but am no expert in this field.   With the latest charging issues, however, I'm leaning towards this theory again.
    Thoughts are welcome.
    Regards
    MrAir

No clues, it is very apparent you have a hardware problem and it is not the battery. If it was the battery the computer would not be running as you say the charger is not charging the battery.
There is a charging curcuit that has more then likely failed. You have done the correct thing, take it in and get it fixed before your warranty runs out.

  • Major Crash Problems while gaming WoW

    Hello Apple/Users,
I have this major problem while playing WoW on my MacBook Retina; I keep crashing! It is not like a regular crash when it shuts down, and you would get an error pop-up. No, it completely freezes, making me unavailable to do anything. The only thing I can do, is holding the Power button shutting down the computer manually. I have had this problem both while playing WoW and Minecraft.
Note: I am playing on Molten-Wows private server 4.0.6.
    Specs:
    MacBook Retina Display 15"
    2,3GHz Intel Core i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT650M (the graphic card used while playing)
    8GB RAM 1600 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.8.2
    Things I have tried:
Deleting Cache, Logs, Erors folder in WoW
    Deleting .plist files from Blizzard
Setting graphics down (actually they have been down at the whole time)
Installed gfxCardStatus to check if I really used the NVIDIA graphics card
    Posting a thread on www.molten-wow.com, and www.wow-europe.com
Thank you in advance, I really hope someone can fix this problem for me.
PS - If you need any other information, please let me know, and if I posted this the wrong place, please tell me where to post it otherwise. I would be grateful.

    Hi,
For me it sounds like an overheating or RAM issue. If the notebook is overheating it often freezes or the display goes black.
First of all you should clean the notebook using compressed air spray. You can get it very cheap from a computer store and its easy to use. Compressed sir spray can blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators.
    Check it out!
The new display driver you can get form the Toshiba European driver download page as Eldorado suggested. But therefore you must search in Archive because Satellite M60 is an older notebook:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Last but not least I would try to check the RAM using Memtest86. This is a diagnostic tool for the RAM to find errors. Google can help you to find it (its freeware).

  • Is it the Hard Disk?Or something more serious?

Recently I have had several problems with my Mini (1.47 super drive with 512mb.) It started with very very slow response time and then would sit at the start up screen for a very long time before booting up.. and then hang up on various apps for a very long time. I started by cheching the HD for errors and was getting Leaf error and other errors. I can usually get this to repair - and the mac will boot a little better but after 30 or so minutes of use.. it starts all over again. iTunes and the iPod Video no longer will Sync and agaim the hard disk needs repaired.
I installed a system on an external firewire drive to test a theory and that seemed to fix the problem for about 2 weeks.. then the problem started with it and now that drive will not repair with anything I have - Disk Warrior and of course Disk Utility. (do not have Tech Tool Pro)
Does this sound like the HD simple needs to be replaced? If so - what help is there on doing that? I have been in there before when the Super Drive stopped working and it turned out to be a simple fix and off I went with no problems for almost a year. Now this issue has arrisen. Any advice or things to try I am open to. When I boot from DVD - it comes right up - that is why I am curious if it is the HD vs mother board or ram or something else.
Thank you in advance for any help!!

With the disk utility it says the SMART status is verified. Disk utlity after repair will still say that the disk it o.k. but it still will not boot.... sits in the apple window and does not go further. Everything works well with the DVD installed (after as booting and working around and does not seem to take to long.) I did bring over my iTunes files and photos.. but everything else is a clean install. I even did the 30+ drive clean before installing. Now the Firewire drive is also having issues.. and says that Disk Utlity can not repair the drive.
I thought I read somewhere that external drives are not a good idea for running the system from so I assumed that was what caused the issue witht he bad drive. Would that still be the case? How do I check the RAM with the install disk through utilities? I am afraid I have never done that before in all my years of working with MACS. It does show up in the system info as a 512 MB RAM.....
Thank you for you advice - and I really appreciate you trying to help me out with this.. I have all about given up. I am actually using a PC right now. YUCK!!!! MY Fingers are burning!!

Computer iMac7,1 has been giving sundry problems for sometime. Within the last six weeks I have reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard),without affecting the overall contents of the hard drive.
±3 weeks later the problems became more serious and I againreinstalled the OS and installed OS 6.6.7 from the internet.
I used the option to restore from the external backup driveand went back some time as it was my intention to reinstall individualcomponent in an attempt to find out where the problem might lie. This hasintroduced an entirely new problem! If I open Time Machine from the desktop itappears that all backups from late 2009 to June 2011 are intact. But, in thiscase there are none of the restore functions &c on screen. The latter areonly shown if Time Machine is opened from the menu bar or from the dock but, inthis case, available are only backups in late 2009!
I also opened the Apple Hardware Test in an attempt toestablish the nature of the problem. The ‘quick’ version said there’s nothingwrong; the more detailed one reported “Error detected, 4HD/11/40000004.” I haveagain tried to employ this test but nothing I do can induce it to open!!!
What to do? I need help urgently and would appreciate anyadvice that offers solutions to the problem.

To check your S.M.A.R.T status open disk utility and click on your drive and then click on the info icon.

  • Which is a more serious problem?

in the next couple of months i will be buying a macbook to add to my herd. two choices, a polycarbonate model that will crack around the palm rest or a unibody model that will crack around the hinges. there doesn't appear to be any long term solutions to either problem. my question is: which of these problems are more serious, that is likely to take the macbook off the road. i'd prefer the polycarbonate model because it has firewire and appears to be more easily repairable.

I currently own four laptops, both polycarbonate and unibody. And I have previously owned four others. None of them has cracked anywhere! So I do not understand your predictions about cracking. I wonder if cracking (of any part) is more likely to be the result of how the laptops are handled, rather than a design defect.
On the question of firewire, I too have a preference for it. But the newest Macs have given up on fw, leaving ethernet and usb as the only options (that can be used without adapters).

  • Logic 8 crashes everytime I use it more than 10 minutes, please help

Hi, I am new on this forum, so hi everyone.
I just bought these 3 items:
    1) new mac Pro 8-core that it comes with Leopard 10.5
    2) new Logic 8 pro studio
    3) new digi 003 rack
I instaled the protools 7.3 software and the problems began! I got an error window saying that I had some missing extensions or somethin like that, later A safary window appeared saying to instal some interlock extensions, I did install it, after finishing the instalation I tryied to launch protools but the hardware was not found. I went to digidesign website and realized about the incompatibility between leopard and protools, so I uninstalled the protools software and desconected the digi 003 from my computer and uninstalled the interlock extensions.
    ok so far...
After all this I decided to instal Logic 8 pro (I never used Logic before, alwyas work with protools) so I could start to familiarize with the program, but after working a little bit with it, Logic crashed, so I launched it again and the same thing happened to me. I had this problem about 6 times in two days!
So I verifyied disck permissions and I got a lot of errors going on; "Something in system/library/usertemplates etc...was unexpected and it should be whatever..." these kind of errors, about 30 in total. By the way, I have an small prohibbited icon over the "USERTEMPLATES" folder. after all this I click on repair disck permissions but nothing was repaired, every error showed again after running once more the verifying thing! so I launched logic praying to be able to work more than an hour but... logic crashed three times in a row in less than 1 hour work. So I decided to kill the people from the store! no, seriously, I reinstalled the Leopard on my computer with an erase and install from the original dvd. Notice that every time logic crashed I was doing something diferent, it crashed once while opening an instrument, other while doing time streching in factory, other just at the begining etc...
    After instaling today again leopard and logic 8 with all the updates from apple/software update (mac os 10.5.2, logic 8.0.1) I still have the same problems;
-Logic crash very often whatever you are working on
    -Disk permissions problems:

And I still have that extrange little icon over User Templates folder on "System/Library/UserTemplates"
I don't have installed any other program else on my computer than logic and leopard! I don't know what the "h.." is going on with this "f.." logic program!
SO PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO SOLVE THIS OR ANY KIND OF HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!
    THANK YOU.
Sorry about the length of the post and my english.

Thanks a lot for your response Scott, I really appreciate it.
I have downloaded the 7.4 protools, but not installed because the 7.3 software cause instalations errors on the computer and the digi is not recognized.
Anyway I wanted to start familiarizing with Logic 8. I thought because Logic and Mac are from Apple they would be totally compatible...and of course they are not!
In other hands I spent 6,300 dollards in new equipment to avoid this kind of problems...but at the end you get all the same traubles whatever you buy or not (crack) the things...so.
Anyway, now my computer it seem to be damage... the fan never stop and I am geting some wierd icons over some folders (stop icons) so...
By the way, I bought everything in SweetWater if anyone wants to know, and so far they seems to be only available to put their hands to get the money but they are always too bussy to help and solve all this crap they did to me.
I bought logic studio, mac pro 8-core 3.0 and digi 003 to them...any of these are working!!! nice!!! and after one waste month they didn't give me any other solution besides to wait and wait and wait days and days in order to talk to any of the technicians...It seems their technicians only have time to ensembly equipment to sell it as soon as they can...nice!!!

  • Black macbook: not sure if its the fan, or something else (noise)

I got this macbook is september. I had no issues with it, when suddenly it began making noises. Now, I'm a gadget-blog reader, so I've been aware of Macbooks making the "moooo" sound from the fan; however, I'm not sure if my noise is the fan or something else. I get more of a "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise.
    1) I have the macbook plugged in
    2) I leave it on all the time
    3) It began to hear the "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" when:
    a) activate visualizer in iTUNES
    b) download shows off iTUNES
    c) have a bunch of windows open and the 512MB Memory is struggling to access each window, if I say, I want to close them.
Considering this is the uncrashable, flexible, awesome OSX, and should be pesk-free, like say WINXP...I would expect such problems to not exist on the glossy OSX.
I'm currently studying abroad in the United Kingdom. I bought this macbook in San Francisco just before I left. I have plenty of warranty left. Is this a big issue? It annoys the **** out of me. None of the macbooks demoed in the store had this problem. So in a way, this is false advertising, since I'm reading that a lot of people have this noise issue.
I've fully updated my firmwares with software updater, but I still get the noise. So I'm at situation that needs some outside help as to what I should do.
    Thanks.

hard to say if it is serious or not. have you tried resetting the pmu? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 that could very well help the matter.

  • Another problem: fan starts running nonstop and messages says to restart

I recently had my hard drive crash and with help from this forum, I was able to replace the hard drive myself last week. I upgraded to Leopard and all seemed well. Now this has happened 3 times: the fan starts running nonstop and loudly and the computer displays a message that I need to restart my computer. The first time it happened, I restarted and it was okay for a few minutes, then started up again, so I shut it down for the night. The next morning, I reset SMU and it worked all of yesterday with no problems until about midday today, when I heard the fan going again and the same message displayed. I currently have it shut down and unplugged to reset the SMU yet again, but am wondering if this is a symptom of more serious problems?
The power supply was replaced a little over a year ago at a local Apple store. Of course, my AppleCare ran out about a month ago. I was really hoping to get another year or two out of this machine with the new hard drive! When I verified the hard drive yesterday, Disk Utility said it was fine. Are there any other troubleshooting things I can do? Thanks for any help with this.

Thanks (once again) for the help! That's a great web site. So far I have run Apple Hardware Test and it says no problems. I verified the disk and it says it appears to be okay. I repaired disk permissions and it did find a couple that it repaired. There were also several SUID files it said would not be repaired, but I found an article that said these warnings can be ignored. I will keep my fingers crossed that the disk permissions repair will help. Otherwise, I will call Apple and see if they will do anything for me. It doesn't seem like it is the power supply again, I'm having totally different symptoms...but who knows? I don't think I will put any more money into this Mac. I would probably buy a new one, but I sure would like to delay it for a year or two, if possible. When it's working okay, this computer is still more than adequate for everything I do.

  • Major system problems, hanging up at startup.

I'm developing some major sytem problems with my G4 Mac. It all seemed to start with a jumping cursor and then a dying mouse. I could not get the Mac to startup with several trys. It wouldn't even start up off of my external drive. I would get the first four icons in the upper right hand corner of the screen and the it would hang. I tried all of the usual fixes- permissions, disk utiliy, Disk Warrior, zapping pram. I finally started unplugging external items and getting back to original Mac- switching the firewire port in the back of my Lacie external drive helped for awhile, but now I'm getting the jumping cursor again and fearing I'll get a hangup again. Any ideas on how I can solve this problem? If not, can you point me somewhere for instructions on how to reinstall the system software? I have already installed a clean system on my external drive. Once I reinstall all of my apps there, and get it running properly, can I move all of that to my internal HD somehow? My original system disks for this computer is Jaguar 10.2 if that helps.
    Thanks for your help,
    Dick Skover

    Dick,
    Some observations and notes.
Have you tried using a different mouse, or changing
the port it is plugged into?
Yes, I tried and am using a inexpensive Logitech optical mouse. The one that came with the computer seemed to get very eratic and then not work at all. I did try plugging into different ports and that didn't make a difference.
How did you upgrade from Jaguar 10.2.x to
    Panther 10.3.9?
I upgraded the simplest way, I guess. I had read about more complex ways to do it at the time Panther came out, but also heard you could do a simple upgrade. I don't remember the exact steps I used. Boy, this is way more complex than my original Mac in 1984.
What size is your Hard Drive, and how much space is
available? I should say I have quite a few applications.
My HD is 75 Gig with 17 Gig available.
Is your installed RAM original or added?
Yes, it came installed when I purchased it: 1.5 Gig
In one post you wrote "My original system disks
for this computer is Jaguar 10.2..."
I heard something back when Panther came out that the fact I started with 10.2, didn't allow me to do certain things like archive and backup.
But in another, you wrote "Yes, my original
Panther disk and then updated everything via
    Internet."
    Please clarify.
When I decided to install a clean system on my external HD I just used my Panther 10.3 disk- I didn't go all the way back to 10.2
"Yes, Disk Warrior found some problems, I don't
    know exactly what they were."
Were the errors corrected? Have you rerun Disk
Warrior, to see if they are indeed repaired?
Actually I ran DW today again on the internal HD and it came up with a couple of problems that it said it repaired. Should I keep running it until it doesn't indicate any problems?
A couple other things you can check.
Open System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account >
    Startup Items.
Is there any item in there that you are not familiar
with, or did not put there yourself?
Yes I did try that- I had a repair person come in to help me. He did point that out and we deleted items that didn't need to be there. What he suggested did help for a week, but the problem came back. I called him again, but he said the only thing left to do was re-install.
From the Utilities folder, start Activity
    Monitor.
    Select Active Processes.
Watch for whatever process is hogging %CPU.
Yes he ran activity monitor also- there didn't seem to be programs hogging the processor although we deleted those that look familiar.
I also have a question about the title screems that pop up on start up. In the past I used to have several things being checked as it went through the process, now I get welcome to Macintosh and that's it. I seem to remember indications that Macaroni was running, but no longer see any of that. I do have Macjanitor also and thought that one of those automatically runs at startup?
I will run pseudo daily, weekly and monthly tasks now. Is this something that Macjanitor does, or should I run the maintenance scripts periodicaly?

  • Photoshop CS5 Crashing Problem

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CS5, and use Windows 7. I have started having problems with Photoshop crashing frequently when I have more than one photograph open at once. As soon as I try to save an image I have worked on, I get a message on the screen saying the programme is about to close, which it then does. Is there something I could change in Preferences for example, which would stop this, as it is incredibly frustrating!
    Thank you.
    Tom

What are your Performance Preferences? (Posting a screenshot might be more convenient than typing them down.)
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Touch persistently crashing - problems with USB/iTunes/Windows 7?

    Hi!
I received a 64gb Touch for Christmas and have a persistent crashing problem. The Touch appears to be randomly crashing across any app or even just playing music - there seems to be no common link. This could be once in a few hours or repeatedly 4/5 times in succession.
It's possible I have a faulty unit but wonder also if I may have an issue with updating/syncing as any sync that takes a reasonable amount of time disconnects and reconnects several times. I had this on my 1st gen Shuffle also - it's almost as though something is disconnecting the USB port and then reconnecting it. I'll mention at this point that I have no other USB related issues - I can run a backup of several hours to a USB harddisk and have no issues and no other USB device has had any sort of problem. If there is a USB issue, it's only happening with iTunes and my iPod(s).
My theory then is that the initial upgrade of the Touch to 3.1.2 on first sync is being corrupted in some way because of the disconnecting issue and that then is causing the crashing as the os is unstable. The Touch has been reinstalled 3 times since purchase and each time having the disconnection issue appear and the resulting persistent crashing.
Hopefully someone can tell me I'm wrong/right in my theory and maybe suggest a way I can fix the disconnection problem so I can at least try a clean reinstall of the Touch and see if that solves the crashing problem before I send the unit back.
    Cheers!

I bought my iPod Touch 32gb last week and as soon as I plugged it in iTunes told me to update to v3.1.2 (came with v3.1.1 installed.) I accepted to install v3.1.2 and it finished installing then restarted. It flashed up in iTunes then disconnected and the ipod went blank, then came up with the apple log for about 1 or 2 minutes, then flashed up again in itunes. It then kept restarting and dissapearing. I left it doing this for about 15 minutes then unplugged the usb lead. It then restarted and all seemed fine.
I had put a couple of albums on. Then I sorted out some more music and done another sync & the **** thing got stuck in the restart loop again.
This was on my laptop which has Windows vista.
I then thought maybe the update to v3.1.2 had gone wrong so i reinstalled it on my main pc. It didn't get stuck in the restarting loop so I thought I had solved the problem. I put my music on my main pc (Windows 7) and done a resync and the blasted thing got stuck in restart loop again.
My son bought his 8GB touch this week and his came with v3.1.2 allready installed and he hasn't had a single problem with it. I hadn't downloaded any apps for mine but he has loads of them and it hasn't crashed once.
I am taking mine back to the shop tomorrow as i have had it less than 10 days.
Am not sure what it is but it is very annoying. I hope the replacement i get works properly.

  • Firefox keeps crashing when I search something up on Google

Firefox keeps crashing when I search something up on Google. The homepage for Google works fine but once I search for anything, the program just freezes. Whats wrong? I am running the new Firefox 4.0, Windows 7 64-bit. This problem never happened with Firefox 3.6

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

After Int Install OS10.5.8 on PowerPC G4 having major system problems (created user to verify) CS4 apps go non responsive

Ok no difference, I don't get any drive errors that seem significant or numerous, sometimes I don't get any at all, the disk always verifies and I haven't had to run a repair on it yet. I've gotton one or two drive errors, I'll save them next time I run either DU or DW.... however with permissions, there are a lot and they all fix (except: see below: Last 3: ACL errors are always there) but as I keep having to do force quits and system re boots they keep coming back; posted them below IDK if this will help you to help me, LOL... but figured it couldn't hurt, the ones below are re-occuring I know i've seen them b4. . .  Don't know if this makes a difference but on initial install I had several font conflicts w/system fonts, I renamed suitcases and that error message hasn't come back . . . but do you think this could be a font issue . . . I have like 12,000 fonts of which a couple hundred are ususally always active . . . IDK it doesn't make sense to me it would be, but you never know... just a shot in the dark
I also saved my last PS crash report and it was like 100 Pages long, I've never seen one that long, I make a pdf of it and post link to my idisk, if its something that you can interpet.

  • Version 6 - various crashing problems

I have major stability problems with Robohelp 6.
All the problems appear to be linked to a variety of
Microsoft supplied DLLs ranging from the HTML parser to the Visual
C run time library which are all loaded in process.
When one of these throws an exception, for example while
parsing a web page which contains invalid syntax, Robohelp handles
the error by crashing. The worst part about this is the complete
lack of error logging - I have no idea what Robohelp is doing at
    the time it crashes.
When trying to import a thousand topic help project it would
die half way through. I had to resort to using the Windows Filemon
application to figure out which HTML file was causing the problem
because Robohelp told me absolutely nothing.
Several time a day while previewing a help topic the
in-process chm viewer crashes and takes the rest of Robohelp with
    it.
Today I tried using the Robohelp command line compiler (rhcl)
to compile a 1000 topic project which compiles OK when using the
GUI. The command line compiler just crashes in the Visual C run
time library with no information as to what it was doing at the
    time.
Can someone at Adobe please send me a version which either
generates extensive logging information, or which contains debug
information so that it can generate a stack trace when it crashes.
    Thanks
    Mike Buckler

You are definitely opening a source project rather than some
