Major crashes in OS 10.4.10

Ok, I've been having all sorts of strange problems with my new Macbook Pro. I'll start with the first big crash, add anything I remember, and update regularly...I seem to find new things every day. I can't come up with any sort of connections between the problems.
I've only had my computer a couple of weeks. I am (or was) running Parallels 3 with Windows XP Home. I had my computer open in my car, playing music. Closed it to walk down the stairs, reopened it. All of my normal login programs were re-opening, including Parallels. When I tried to start my Windows virtual machine, Parallels crashed, then all the other programs, then my whole computer. Could not get any response, including with Cmd-Opt-Esc. Had to shutdown using power button and restart. Since then I have not been able to start my Windows VM. Sometimes I can launch Parallels itself without problems until I try to start Windows, sometimes it crashes when I try to open Parallels, sometimes the icon doesn't even respond. I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and checked my HDD from Disk Utility on the startup disk (10.4.6). I have uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels several times. Since that first problem all sorts of other small things seem to be happening. Programs that previously worked will crash once and then open, or crash every time. Some of my icons are messed up - some programs or files display an icon belonging to something else - all my mp3s showed the Parallels icons one day. Some of the icons are completely broken - just random horizontal lines. As of yesterday, links from other programs won't open in Firefox - links from Thunderbird open Firefox, but not the page, links from Fire (a chat program) crash Fire. As of today, my back button in Firefox rarely works. Sometimes a page will load with only the text. My internet dies intermittently - granted, our DSL is unreliable, but both the hub and modem show that my computer is sending and receiving. And sometimes one program has internet, but nothing else. At times I'm unable to sleep or shutdown from the Apple menu. Today I can't open About This Mac - had to launch System Profiler from Applications. The other day I installed another 1 GB of RAM on top of my original 1 GB (RAM was in the mail before problems started), and that seemed to make things slightly better temporarily. I was able to launch Parallels (but not Windows) a couple times, some of my icons started showing up correctly...but it's getting worse again. I contacted Parallels support since the problem seemed to originate with Parallels, but let's just say they're not the most responsive. I just got this computer as my eMac was on it's last legs - barely usable - and I'm very upset at not being able to do basic tasks! I read a topic about bugs with 10.4.10, but they seem to vary widely and I updated several days before the first problem. Any advice is appreciated! I can answer any questions that I'm able to find out without crashing...and if I need to reinstall anything I would really like to be able to keep my programs and settings. Thank you!

As sig helpfully provided, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If no errors are reported, download the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.10 Intel Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
Cheers! DALE

Problem solved. It helps to use CS5 to open a CS5 document. When you use the right key, the door opens. Lesson: Don't store installation discs of inactive versions with installation discs of current versions.

  • Following a major crash - I'm not linked iWeb-- iDisk

    Hi,
I had a major disk crash and had to 'recover' quite a few files. iWeb refused to launch so I trashed the .plist preference file.
iWeb launches, but treats me like I want to use iWeb for the first time. Any ideas on how I can remind iWeb where my web page is? (I can view the page through Safari, so I know it's there)
    I've got version 1.1.1.

    OK,
I found a file called Domain.sites where you said I would (in my recovered files) and copied it to my ... /iWeb folder on my HD. It looked right as the copy generated a dialogue box and I recognised some of the jpeg file names.
However, when I tried to open iWeb it 'unexpectantly quit'. I opened the report and the following are the first few lines:
    Date/Time: 2006-08-07 20:02:40.469 +0200
    OS Version: 10.4.7 (Build 8J135)
    Report Version: 4
    Command: iWeb
    Path: /Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/MacOS/iWeb
    Parent: WindowServer [58]
    Version: 1.1.1 (189)
    Build Version: 5
    Project Name: iWeb
    Source Version: 1890000
    PID: 297
    Thread: 0
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000024
I've saved it as at .txt file.
I guess this domain file is corrupted and I will have to rebuild the site from scratch. Thanks for your help!

  • Major Crash Problems while gaming WoW

    Hello Apple/Users,
I have this major problem while playing WoW on my MacBook Retina; I keep crashing! It is not like a regular crash when it shuts down, and you would get an error pop-up. No, it completely freezes, making me unavailable to do anything. The only thing I can do, is holding the Power button shutting down the computer manually. I have had this problem both while playing WoW and Minecraft.
Note: I am playing on Molten-Wows private server 4.0.6.
    Specs:
    MacBook Retina Display 15"
    2,3GHz Intel Core i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT650M (the graphic card used while playing)
    8GB RAM 1600 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.8.2
    Things I have tried:
Deleting Cache, Logs, Erors folder in WoW
    Deleting .plist files from Blizzard
Setting graphics down (actually they have been down at the whole time)
Installed gfxCardStatus to check if I really used the NVIDIA graphics card
    Posting a thread on www.molten-wow.com, and www.wow-europe.com
Thank you in advance, I really hope someone can fix this problem for me.
PS - If you need any other information, please let me know, and if I posted this the wrong place, please tell me where to post it otherwise. I would be grateful.

    Hi,
For me it sounds like an overheating or RAM issue. If the notebook is overheating it often freezes or the display goes black.
First of all you should clean the notebook using compressed air spray. You can get it very cheap from a computer store and its easy to use. Compressed sir spray can blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators.
    Check it out!
The new display driver you can get form the Toshiba European driver download page as Eldorado suggested. But therefore you must search in Archive because Satellite M60 is an older notebook:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Last but not least I would try to check the RAM using Memtest86. This is a diagnostic tool for the RAM to find errors. Google can help you to find it (its freeware).

  • I just had my FireFox updated after a major crash with at least over 80 tabs in 2 windows total, which it worked fine before crashing, but now my bowser crashes at random clicks on avrious websites & small group reloads. What is wrong and can it be fix?

The tabs I had were at YouTube, DeviantART, and other websites that are picture sites, or just image heavy. I usually leave my browser open while my laptop is in hibernation mode, as to try to avoid closing them as I tend to build up tabs and it would be a pain to wait and load everything. This has cause some crashes in the past, but those were less frequent than what I am experiencing now after the latest update. My browser seems to act more frail after that big crash I had. I did tried to reload my windows in tab, while cutting off the wireless so it wouldn't be too big of rush of loadtime, but it still crashed and does it constantly now. I can barely watch a 10-minute video or any multi task without the browser just crashing at random loads or clicks. Also, I notice whenever I write comments on Youtube, the browser lags and sometimes freezes.
It works better after I restart my computer, but that' s only a temporary fix.

  • Major crashing and performance problems, apparently since 10.6.1

    Hi there
Since I updated to 10.6.1, I've had significant problems with my black MacBook, Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz. I get the spinning beach ball holding me up all the time (twice since I've started typing this message), the fan goes crazy, applications just crash and hang, and on a few occasions the whole window server has just crashed, killing all my apps and dumping me out at a login prompt.
I've looked in the console and seen a variety of messages, some related to Windowserver, e.g.:
[598] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: _CGXMapShmemInternal : Invalid shared memory id
[112] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x2 not owned by caller (PID 179)
[112] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x7 not owned by caller loginwindow
    some related to I/O:
    kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
and of course the latter make me think about disk problems. However the disk is only 6 months old, I replaced the one that came with the computer which died in March, and this one's been perfectly alright up until now, so I've checked the disk with Disk Utility and /sbin/fsck -fy in single user mode, and both say there's nothing wrong with it. I have an external LaCie 2Big RAID attached by Firewire which is my TimeMachine volume, and I've run Disk Utility against that and again, it says there's no problem.
I've rebooted in safe mode, single user mode, verbose mode, all of it says everything's fine. I've switched off Spotlight indexing, as I thought it might be that. I'm getting nowhere - haven't had a window server crash for a couple of days, but applications randomly take ages to start, cursors just hang waiting on the beach ball, and sometimes if I leave Activity Monitor running I see applications just go red "not responding" for a while and then just start responding again later, with nothing in the system/console/'all messages' log to indicate there was ever a problem.
I've got 168.3GB free space out of 250GB available on the boot disk; Activity Monitor says 1.17GB free RAM. 'top' says PhysMem: 1247M free. I've checked the memory in single user mode by running '/usr/bin/memtest all 20' and it says everything's fine.
There are a variety of other error messages, lots of warning to do with multiple kernel dependencies which I think are probably deprecation warnings, but a lot of which I don't know much detail about. The point is, none of this was happening before I upgraded to 10.6.1, and now that I have, it's making my computer nigh on unusable at times.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Igor

Hi again. Right, Thursday night it crashed, just hanging there, so I force-restarted with the power button, and it wouldn't boot. disk0s2: I/O error in console. Great, dead disk, I think; well, a shame that neither Disk Utility nor fsck told me anything about it, but at least that explains things.
So today I went out and bought a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA disk, took it home, plugged it in, partitioned the disk, did a restore from Time Machine, and pressed "Restart from restored system". Bang. Nothing. Option-restart: only shows SL install DVD. Console: nothing. Reboot into installer, doesn't even show Seagate in Disk Utility. Swap old disk back in, same as before, disk I/O error. Try new one again, nothing. Start thinking I might be in for a big bill or a new Mac, try once more, boots fine. All working fine except Mail which gives me this:
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X
You have Mail version 4.1 (1076/1075.2). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.1 (Build 10B504). For more information, click the Help button."
    So:
    a) What might be up with the computer that it sometimes can't see the HD? I'm trying to make sure the disk is securely seated, but it's as far as I can see identical in shape to the last one, with which I carted the Mac around over the last few months without any such problems. Connections? Motherboard? SATA bus? How can I find out? This is going to be expensive, isn't it?
    b) In the meantime, while I have the thing booted and working, how do I fix the above? I simply restored the whole system from a Time Machine backup about 4 hours before the computer died the other night, didn't do anything funny at all: how can the versions be wrong? Software Update says I have no updates necessary, where do I find an installer?
    Cheers

  • Major crashes even after clean install.  iCal/sqlite/MobileMe the culprit?

In 25 years of using Apple computers, I've never had problems like I'm having now.
My iMac was acting up severely with some strange symptoms such as:
    * The red & white portion of the iCal icon in the dock disappearing, while the date itself remained visible.
    * All kinds of 0K sqlite files showing up on the base level of the hard drive, and a lots of cfx pref files being generated (stuff like cfx#1t9Oiul -- these i understand to be corrupt pref files). The sqlite files, by the way, show up as things like etilqs_3HVA6IL9BWQtB9e
    * Freezes, generally slow behavior, and multiple crashes, including the "blue screen of death" where the color just shifts and the cursor comes and goes. Eventually, even after running DiskWarrior, I the computer would start up, then spontaneously shut itself down after the grey apple screen with the progress wheel.
Ultimately, I decided to just wipe the thing clean and start fresh from a backup.
Using a Leopard install disk, I attempted to do the clean install, but was unable to from the iMac's internal optical drive - the installer told me the disk was damaged or dirty (the optical drive is brand new, by the way).
Using a powerbook and putting the iMac in target mode, I was able to do a completely clean install.
I ran all the software updates and have added NO third party software.
    Problems are back:
Running a sync to get my calendar, contacts, and bookmarks back, I encountered my first problem again: address book wouldn't sync "due to inconsistent data" and told me to replace the data on the computer by resetting it -- which I attempted to do, multiple times, but the sync always failed.
Then , once again those sqlite files started showing up.
Then the iCal icon disappeared again and programs weren't responding. Moments ago I had to do a hard restart.
I've zapped the PRAM, I've tried everything I know, and I'm still having all these problems (some of which, by the way, are now beginning to occur on the PowerBook G4 I also have).
If anyone can provide me any guidance here, man would I love it. Is it possible the Leopard disk I have is somehow corrupted and is causing all these issues? Or is it hardware? Or is this some sort of problem that's being generated by synchronization?
I'm really at my wit's end.
Thanks to anyone who can give me a hand.
    Jon

Just wanted to update anyone who's interested:
After replacing the internal hard drive, all problems have ceased and my Mac is running beautifully -- fast (though I also upgraded the ram from 1 to 2 GB) and I couldn't be happier.
So just a word to the wise: those "software" problems I was so certain I was having turned out to be a hard drive that was slowly failing. A friend of mine who's a programmer said he's never heard of a hard drive failing anything but suddenly, but in this case that's what happened.
With the problems I was having, I was seriously beginning to question my loyalty to Apple.
As it turns out, now I'm questioning their loyalty to Western Digital -- that drive was a dog and I'm glad to have replaced it with a Seagate.

  • Major Crashes with no cause?

    Laptop: C855-S5122
    Purchased: Febuary 2013
    Heavily used for gaming.
Hello, I need a diagnosis on a problem. Every once in a while I will get a fatal meltdown from my computer, and it force shuts without warning, as if the power button was held for 10 seconds, and will refuse to turn on, until I removed all power sources (battery, cord). It will then take an unusually long time to boot.
I am afraid it will eventually not turn on, but I cant find the cause. One of the reasons is that it can occur randomly, sometimes within 5 minutes of the last crash, and it has taken 3 months to appear again once. I started getting these problems in December, and I called Toshiba, but as the warrenty is expired, they couldn't really help me. They said it could be a software causing this, which is unlikely as once it happened while playing Euro Truck Simulator alone, and another minecraft while on a skype call, and no instance of any software being used the last time, open. Unless it is a built in software, windows or any toshiba bloatware, then it is not software causing the problem.
I doubt it is a virus, as I have done multiple scans with different antivirus softwares.
No it is not overheating, I have a laptop fan that it sits on, and right after the crash my laptop is warm, but not too hot.
Im curious if any hardware is causing this, but I do not have money to have it looked at. It's not the battery as it happens while its plugged in or not, and even without the battery in. I am wondering if it could be the power supply or the hardrive, but no drops or shaking has occured to this computer to have caused internal damage. IT's only 2 years old, how can the parts be falling apart?
If anyone can help me diagnose or fix this problem I would appreciate it. for now I will continue to enjoy my laptop until the next crash occurs.

You can check the event viewer and run memory test -
In windows 8 ,8.1 type in administrative tools,
then select event viewer - it will load and show your information look for critical errors then open them to see the cause's
    And
select Windows memory diagnostic - open and select restart now and check for problems.
If it has been 2 years with gaming it is probably time for new thermopaste on the processor and video card to heatsink.

  • Major crashing issue... Audio file AWOL?

I am hoping someone can help and that I am just doing a dumb mistake. I am using Logic 8 in Leopard on a MacPro. I've been working on a session and have two tracks with a comp'ed vocal. For some reason, the main track view (right next to track name) is empty. When I unpack the comp, the different audio files are all greyed out. And when I click on the main track, Logic crashes and forces a restart, saving a "crashed" version. When it reboots, the pane for my Mackie Control Universal pops up. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the Mackie Control in addition to whatever is happening in Logic.
I've had recent warnings about a possible conflict with third party apps and that I need to check the drivers of my MIDI devices to see if they are up to date? Sorry but I did not record the exact wording. Does anyone know what this might mean, and how I need to go about checking drivers? I have several interfaces and not sure how to see what's what. I realize I may have more than one issue/problem going on here, so thanks for any ideas.

    Hi Midlake,
Well, because they are known troublemakers. Search for 'takes' or 'take folder(s)' or 'comp' here on the forum and you'll find many a troubled soul crying out for help - including seasoned pro's, who thought they were beyond tears...
O, they are fine for recording many takes - but thats' all. I'll select the best takes/phrases.
    regards, Erik.

  • Major crash after sw update.  Permissions taking forever.  Why?

I installed the latest software updates on my iMac G5 and it crashed. On restart, it hit a loop of restarting, then displaying the grey screen with the time circle, then reboots itself... over and over again.
I booted up with my Leopard DVD and began running Disk Utilities, then Repair Permissions at 8 this morning. It is now 4 pm and it's still going. Is this normal?? I can hear the DVD drive as if it's definitely working. How long should I let this run?
    Thanks,

repair permissions most certainly should not take this long. the longest it should take is about an hours and that's on very old hardware. I would abandon it and try repairing the drive instead of permissions. see if there is any file system damage.
P.S. do you have a backup?

  • Experiencing major crashes, bugs still there

The last update was a giant step forward, I'm enjoying working with the new SG version (CC 7.0.1 x51).
But, I noticed the problems with CMD+Z (undo) are still there: sometimes works, sometimes stucks on "optimizing timeline", sometimes the thumbnails in the timeline are displayed, a lot of times my pointer disappears and I have to restart SG.
I'm afraid to press cmd+z now!
I'm doing my first client work with the new version, will report eventual bugs or problems.

Thanks Dennis, sorry I don't mean crashes. I completed the work yesterday and the main issues I encountered are with cmd+z (undo). When pressing cmd+z I got these effects (each time different):
    1) The old problem of thumbnails, the bar came out and the "optimizing timeline" progress bar is shown.
    2) "Optimizing timeline" progress bar is shown, when at 100%, the preview switches to "2 up" automatically with the same frame I actually was on in timeline in both panels.
    3) Sometimes after the issues above, the mouse pointer disappears, I have to force quit and restart SG.
I am on a macbookpro (mid 2010) osx 10.8.4, Speedgrade CC updated to latest version.
Will also file a bug report via your link.
I finished the work smoothly and rendered a master, but I will open a new thread with some requests regarding the workflow and some features (missing or hidden!). Thanks
    Andy

  • Major crash!!! Help please!

Hey guys...  I'm having a huge problem with my production premium suite.   Pretty much my Mac hard drive crashed so it was all backed up in time machine and I got a new one. I reput all the files and tried to load up premiere. I got an error notice. I cant remember what Iraqis exactly but it would crash my premiere before it opened. So I tried to uninstall and reinstall and it went, but on the next reinstall it didnt work again so again I tried to uninstall. However when I tried to uninstall again it said I could not unistall until I closed dynamiclinkmanager but nothing adobe was open at all. So I figured maybe I need to update, so I did but midway through the update again it said I could not update till I closed the dynamiclinkmanager again. I'm so confused and I really need my suite. If any of you guys has a fix that would be great! Also I will try to encounter the first error that shut down my premiere pro and I'll post that as well!  Thanks anyone, for any help. And if you need questions awnsered shoot em at me!

I am running this right now, ill have an answer pretty soon, I'm in the process of reinstalling...
anyways, here was the original crash error for premiere pro, anyone know what it means?

  • Character Viewer causes major crash on start up

This is urgent, so any help greatly appreciated.
I switched on the Character Viewer (CV), can't remember which app I was in at the time.
It loaded the CV window, but it was completely unresponsive. No characters appeared, and I couldn't close the window (all window buttons dead). It also hovered over every application, in every space.
After a restart, my Finder is completely unresponsive. In Activity Viewer (before it crashes) I see CV loading, taking about 90% CPU. All I get is the spinning beachball, system wide, and on any application if I try and open it.
Tried starting in safe mode, same thing happens.
I've tried repairing disk and permissions using Lion Recovery's Disk Utility. Tried FSCK. Tried zapping PRAM, and resetting SMC.
Also tried catching the CV in Activity Viewer, and forcing it to quit. It soon reappears however and everything goes down again.
    Nothing is helping....
I don't have this problem in other user accounts.
    What can I do!?
    Thanks

    Hmmm
well i tried deleting the preference file mentioned above and here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2415080?start=0&tstart=0
    And it didn't help.
So I deleted all preference files created since the incident, restarted and now everything's working again.
I lost a lot of app and finder preferences, including dock, mail and safari, but hey - my machine's working again.
NOTE: because the Mac was unusable from every start-up, I had to access it over a network with my Macbook. I used Xray vision to access the otherwise invisible ~/library/preferences folder.

  • Major Crash Problem: Fan or Something More Serious?

    Hi everyone,
My 3.75 years of computing bliss have finally ended. My 2006 MacBook Pro (15.4", 2.16ghz, 2gb RAM) has suddenly begun freezing, crashing and restarting seemingly irratically.
Sometimes it will just freeze. Sometimes it will crash (the dreaded "shut down" instrucions and generate a crash report on restart--which I save). Sometimes it will restart itself. And, strangest of all, sometimes the optical drive will make noise as if it's starting up, then the screen will go off--but there are still things running and power to the USB devices.
I know for certain that my left fan does not work. It hasn't for over a year. I've always kept an eye on my temps and elevated the computer. Since I am legally blind, I cannot use a computer that hasn't been set up specifically for me so I can't afford to send it in for repair unless absolutely necessary. I use my computer for almost everything; shopping, banking, paying bills, scanning (or photographing) and then enlarging stuff I couldn't otherwise read, etc, not to mention the occasional paying job.
But if the fan is the problem, why did it start to have problems so suddenly? And why would it crash only a few minutes after startup? Or while I'm not using it for anything and nothing is running? There doesn't appear to be a pattern. Occasionally, it will crash right after startup. I've tried starting it in safe mode with no success.
If I take it to the Apple store, can they tell me if there's something else going on? I can't afford to pay to have it fixed twice if it's not the fan, much less be without it twice. The store is a 75 minute drive and I don't have a car so just getting there is no small feat.
I knew this day would come eventually; I just hoped it would come before the warranty was up!
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
    -- Stephanie

In case you do have a dying hard drive, make your first priority to do a good backup if you haven't already and keep it up to date.
You can do a comprehensive check of the physical health of your hard drive with SMART Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is more sensitive than Disk Utility, and may sense impending drive failure before Disk Utility does.
Laptop hard drives have an average useful life of 3-5 years, and yours is well into this range.
If you do end up having to have your hard drive replaced, be sure to have them replace the left fan, or even better, both fans, since the right one has been doing the work of both for a year.
At one time, I believe that if a thermal sensor didn't work, then the fan wouldn't work either. Later things were changed so that if a sensor didn't work, the fan would run at full speed by default to protect the computer from overheating. I'm not sure which system you have.
If you can, boot from your original gray system disc and run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It might give you a clue as to what is wrong in the form of one or more error codes.
Also, there might be an AASP that is closer to you than the Apple Store. If so, they could run some diagnostic tests. There would probably be a fee for this.
Are you in the US? Apple has a flat fee repair program for some Macs, but I'm not entirely certain which ones. It would be worth asking Apple about this.
Also, if you are in the US and end up sending your Mac off to the repair depot, be aware that turnaround can be very fast. My niece sent hers off on a Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM, and had it back the next Thursday morning.
Also, if you do end up needing to replace your hard drive, make a bootable clone on an external drive using Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
With a bootable clone, you can clone back to a new drive, and your settings and everything will be as they were before.
    Good luck!

  • MAJOR CRASHES on windows XP using QT

    HELLLPPPP!
Since I've download QT 7 (even in standalone instalation), my computer crashes down everytime I want to play a QT sequence (not happen on net via streaming though). Look slike it's a conflict with my driver (video card?ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700) but I've updated it and still same story. It's really annoying since I really need QT for my work.
Anybody can help me out? Thanks heaps

good man. you've gone through a lot of the basic troubleshooting with an 0x8E already.
one further thing to check on at your end of things is malware. (i've seen some 0x8Es caused by that.) so try downloading fresh definitions and running vigorous spyware and virus scans. if your security software providers offer them, try running online scans too. (they can sometimes pick up on an infestion on a PC when the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
to try to cover some other bases, let's also try enlisting some additional technical help.
let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to someone who can interpret minidumps.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
collect the minidump, and send it to this email address
in the email, include the URL to this thread so that the person who gets the email has some context, but also give as much information about the context of the crashing as you can.
